Sebastian the Ibis, Miami Hurricanes cheerleaders, the Sunsations and the fall
sports student-athletes from football, soccer and volleyball will highlight the
annual BankUnited CanesFest this Saturday at BankUnited
Center.
The free event is
set to run from 4-7 p.m. Saturday. Free parking is available in the BankUnited
Center lots. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the football team is expected to sign
autographs and meet fans from 5-7 p.m.
Coaches and
student-athletes will be available to sign autographs. As part of the University
of Miami’s commitment to NCAA compliance and in light of recent national news,
student-athletes will only sign the official 2013 BankUnited #CanesFest poster
that will be provided for free at the event. Please do not bring or ask
student-athletes to sign other items. Your cooperation and support for the
athletics department in complying with NCAA regulations is greatly
appreciated.
With a large
crowd expected and a limited amount of time available, it is highly unlikely
that fans will be able to receive an autograph of every player in attendance. To
accommodate as many people as possible, fans will only receive one poster (per
person) for the autograph line.
In addition to the autograph signing, 2013 BankUnited #CanesFest events will include:
· “Dress Like a Miami Hurricane” photo booth
· ACC Championship Trophies photo booth
· Men’s Basketball Select-A-Seat event
· Homestead-Miami Speedway Race Car photo opportunity
· Purchase single-game and season tickets
·
UM Bookstore Merchandise on
sale
Single-game and season tickets
are on sale now at www.CanesTix.com. The only way to attend the highly anticipated matchup
between the Florida Gators and Canes is by purchasing a small amount of
remaining season tickets.
U guys have a great time at CanesFest. See U guys on the 30th. Go Canes!

Transferring over from Dr. Krop to Miami Northwestern during the spring, Miami defensive back commitment Ryan Mayes (6’2”, 200) had a big transition to make. Mayes says the move has been easy.
“I’m very comfortable. We all spend time with each other on the weekends and outside of football,” said Mayes.
Miami Northwestern has not made a deep playoff run for a couple years in a row, which is considered unacceptable in Bull territory. Mayes feels like this season’s team can change that.
“Our expectations are really high. We expect to be national champions. We feel like we can take it all the way. We don’t the media any mind and everyone is objected their own opinion, but we want to be the team we used to be.”
When I spoke to Miami Northwestern defensive coordinator Luther Campbell back in June about Mayes, he told me the ‘Canes commit had all the physical tools in the world, but needed to work on becoming more physical. Mayes explained what “Coach Luke” has done with him.
“One, he made me be a tougher kid as far as not getting into my feelings on the football field, which basically means not allowing people to get in my head and to stay on my game and not get sidetracked. And of course number two, he’s helped me get more physical.”

2014 Miami Northwestern linebacker Mike Smith was disappointed when his teams hopes of making it to the state championship were cut short by the Central Rockets. Now he is going into his final year looking to get back to what the Bulls are about: Winning.
“I’m trying take it all away you know it’s either states or bust, thats what are coaches have been saying ‘States or bust’. Trying to get that state championship and overcome losing to Miami Central and Booker T. Washington last year and just try to continue to the tradition going for the younger guys.”
Smith is one of the leaders on the team and has been doing what he can to keep the team focused on the same goal.
“Lot of leadership roles, like I really have to control the team and police the team. Sometimes guys get a little off track and I help them, I gotta be like the big brother or the daddy of the team and tell these guys to stay focus and stay ready to play at anytime and remember that you don’t have to play this game, this game is a privilege to play.”
The 6’3 210 pound rusher gave his commitment to the Hurricanes back during the summer and is still a hundred percent committed.

2015 University School running back Jordan Scarlett is coming off a season in which he had big roles in some of his school’s key games and is going to be looked to this year in big situations.
“I knew it was gonna come eventually, but I’m ready for it and I’m ready to be able to put the team on my back. I’ll do it any day.”
University school is considered by many to be the favorite to make it back to the state championship and Scarlett is just focusing on keeping everyone heads level.
“It feels good, but we gotta stay humble and hungry. That’s what we did last year and we came out victorious, hopefully our family comes together this year and we can do it again.”
Recruiting wise, the 5’10 200 pound runner has quite the list of schools after him with almost every school in the nation sending mail.
“Some Florida schools are sticking out right now, I’d have to say FSU, UM, Florida and UCF.”
The University school product is listening to all schools, but has intentions to stay close to home.
“I want to stay close to home.”

The Dude, the good news for you sharing the same birthday with your new addition to the family, you can reign in the extravagance on her birthday parties by playing the shared day of the year card every year as she grows up, if need be.
How many combined losses do you think it takes to have UM/FSU moved to a 3:30 or so start? I've got two, obviously the most likely will be @ Clemson and then maybe Maryland, @ BC or @ Pitt, but a 2nd isn't very likely, for FSU. UM will show what mettle they have to draw on with the UF and @ UNC games by that point in the season, both of them basically being tossups, although I thought I saw UF lost yet another starter (FB?) to injury and Jones still isn't practicing, so who knows what they'll actually be able to field by the time kickoff gets here?
