Here are some updates from The Miami Hurricanes Fall practices in preparation for the 2013 football season:
- #100Days Countdown to Kickoff: 23 days
- Miami opens 2013 season Aug. 30 vs. FAU at 8 p.m. on ESPNU
- Wednesday was the first day of full pads for the Hurricanes, concluding the NCAA-mandated 5-day acclimation period.
- NFL scouts from the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns were in attendance.
- Senior QB Stephen Morris, sophomore WR Malcolm Lewis and senior DE Shayon Green wore jerseys and shorts Wednesday and serve as team leaders.
- Sophomore DB Deon Bush was in a red (non-contact) jersey, freshman DB Corn Elder and junior DE Anthony Chickillo were in yellow (limited contact) jerseys. Freshman OL Sunny Odogwu was back in a white jersey.
- Junior QB Ryan Williams practiced with the first-team offense and redshirt freshman Gray Crow with the second-team offense.
- Duke Johnson, Phillip Dorsett, Artie Burns, Stacy Coley, Malcolm Lewis and Corn Elder worked on kickoff returns, while Matt Goudis and Pat O’Donnell alternated as kickoff specialists.
- Offense won the 3-by-2 skeleton thanks in part to an Allen Hurns 45-yard TD catch and big catches by Rashawn Scott and Stacy Coley.
- Defense won the first 11-on-11 drill. Tracy Howard jumped underneath a route to pick off a pass from QB Ryan Williams.
- On the next play, Williams bounced back with a long TD throw to Hurns.
- Both Duke Johnson and Dallas Crawford broke off TD runs of 30-plus yards in 11-on-11.
- Alex Figueroa batted back a Gray Crow pass, which was caught by Tyrone Cornileus for a TD.
- The Canes ended practice with work on 2-point conversions.
QUOTABLES
Al Golden on the first day of full pads…
“We’re ready to go. We’ll see if some guys take the next step for us. It’s not a lot different than going in tops, but we’ll have some goal line and short yardage periods in there. So we want to make sure we get them covered and put the full gear on them.”
Golden on difficulty to hold guys back from hitting while wearing pads at practice…
“The hardest thing is to teach young guys to stay off the legs and to dive for guys and take side shots. We’re always talking about that in practice but in general we’re doing a pretty good job. We’re just staying up and staying healthy.”
Golden on if there will be more injuries now that they are in full pads…
“I hope not. I think we are real safe. We don’t practice differently in full pads than we do without them, to be honest with you. We don’t take guys to the ground. There might be two periods that we do that today, just the goal line and short yardage, because there really is no other way to do it. Other than that, we don’t really change our philosophy.”
Olsen Pierre on defense’s progress…
“Last year we had a lot of new guys and guys at different spots. This year I feel like we are a better group. We were told over the summer we got to stay with each other. We went out to eat, we worked out, we all got bigger together so we could all go out and attack and make that wall for no running backs, full backs or anything to get past us.”
Duke Johnson on what impresses him about the team…
“We’re competing big time this year. We come in, practice every day and compete. Everything we do, we compete with each other. We compete off the defense. It’s big competition.”
Johnson on his running style…
“A lot of it is instinct. You go off on what you feel and let your eyes guide you the rest of the way.”

Back in Gainesville after a day in Palatka. Had to work with a bunch of Gator fans today over in Putnam County. I turn on my computer which was connected to the LCD projector and my screen saver "It's All About The U!" came up on the projection screen in full 6' X 6' glory for all to see. Did some really good trash talking and invited them all to come down to The 305 on 9/7 for a butt whooping before the training began. LOL
I am going to the local sports bar wearing all Canes gear tonight. OGV...If U don't hear back from me on the blog later this evening collect some bail money and come get me out of this swampy hell hole.

4 real,
Re: Forston and others:
If you look into the current NFL contract you'll see those guys cost themselves a ton of $. You start with a low salary and you're locked in for 3-4 years. Kinda rigged because that's the average life span of an NFL player, so most guys won't ever see the big $.
If another year had popped each up 2-3 rounds, it would be worth millions.

I now have officially become envious of a fly on a wall for the first time ever, good job 86, you should be proud. Just get Mrs. 86 to post an SOS on the blog with your phone call from jail and I'll be there in two hours or so after I read it to spring you, because this one will probably be four pages deep in comments pretty soon at the rate it's going so we can't have you incarcerated for any major stretch here during pre-season camp.
Fortson leaving early is really the only one I could sympathize with because of his injury history and I thought he had his degree anyway didn't he? The rest of them basically lit money on fire especially Streeter, although he is flossing the world championship ring so he did OK despite the entry gun jump in the blocks.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 07, 2013 at 06:50 PM
Actually, I take that back, Miller I can understand with the nagging shoulder and the fact that 'mileage' in college is now being used against guys who play his position in a lot of front offices.
Vernon, how to say this diplomatically, his skill set didn't seem to match up well with what Jethro and D'No seem to think the line should be doing on defense, so I think he took a calculated gamble in his mind and tried to cash in before his value took a hit due to a full season of being in the new system.
Both of them also had their degrees as far as I remember, but maybe I'm mistaken? So half of them lit money on fire, the other half I can see their reasoning even if the wisdom of their choices is up for debate at this point (except for Washington, WTF was he thinking all around?).
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 07, 2013 at 07:00 PM
Ain't no guarantee those kids would have got drafted higher mountain Cane, that's just an assumption. Just like it wasn't a guarantee that those guys wouldn't have suffered career ending injuries, ESPECIALLY Fortson & Miller, who was practically injured 4 most of their careers @ Miami.

Had to post this again some might have missed. We do this believe this we will be unstoppable!!!!
Ladies and Gents here is the philosophy that matters...and for the record, it sets the winning isn't everything quote straight in the last line!!! Enjoy!!!
What It Takes To Be Number One
Winning is not a sometimes thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.
Every time a football player goes to ply his trade he's got to play from the ground up - from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. you've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second.
Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization - an army, a political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win -to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is.
It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules – but to win.
And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat.
I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he's exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is the only thing.
Vince Lombardi
These are the most important words in life, after the words of the King James Holy Bible....and The King James I refer to is not some hoop player from The Heat LOL
This is what I have learned from 8 years old from my Dad, Uncle and godfather, who all played HS College and Pro for the Rams, Lions and Redskins respectfully. I have heard this since I was 7....almost 48 years...worked for me through sandlot, HS, college and 35 yrs coaching...VAC!!
Posted by: VA Cane | August 07, 2013 at 09:43 PM
SOUP, my neighbor knocked on my door a week and a half ago.
He had a one year old gator in his hands that he caught at the river about a football field length away from my front door. The animal was terrified, probably because he knew he was in unfriendly territory. Bang stick to the head is the only way to deal with them, and they taste pretty good, had some fried gator bits about three weeks ago eating out.
If UM doesn't win in week two, I've got to retire the Muschump nickname because dude already coached in (and lost) a BCS bowl and a head to head loss in the final game ever in the regular season would be a limb too far to stay out on at that point but I have a feeling all the good jujube they used last year to fake their way to 11 wins is coming home to roost with interest on the other end of the spectrum for them this year.

4 real, Ray Lewis does not work for UM. He is alumni but he has no obligation to only speak at UM. I don't know if Nick Saban ever produced a player with the fame or caliber of a Ray Ray, but if a former Saban player wanted to visit and speak at UM, Saban can't do shit about it.

Posted by: Diesel9 | August 07, 2013 at 09:59 PM
Diesel I love that, I can tell you do too. I would certainly say all the great people on here love it. We all have opinions, and they are different....but I know everybody from Soup to CGNC to OGV to CaneRock to The Dude, Canesteeler, CoCane, Big Zilla, LB Ogio Hassan...hell all these great people want to win. Lombardi was a basic guy. I was so fortunate to meet him twice in the late 60s as we lived in Northern VA and my Pop was in the FBI....he knew a lot of people in DC connected to the Skins, and I have 2 autographs from him I cherish to this day. He had an aura of winning about him, he was tough...but so many players say he loved them. I try to be that way...you know I fail always...with my guys. I read this to them...and tell them it is for life school football and anything else you do in life. It means a lot to me and I wanted to share it with my family. Go Canes we are going to have a great year....

The UM basketball program now has two top-100 players in the 2014 class after snagging a commitment Wednesday from Philadelphia area guard Ja’Quan Newton, rated the 43rd best player by rivals.com.
Newton averaged 18.4 points and six assists last season and can play either guard spot or small forward. UM could play him alongside Kansas State transfer Angel Rodriguez in 2014-15, giving them two very good ball-handlers who can penetrate. Newton chose UM over UCLA, Oregon, Syracuse, Minnesota and Texas.
UM previously landed commitments from Orlando Christian shooting guard Adonys Henriquez (rated the 98th best player by rivals.com) and three-star Washington D.C. guard James Palmer.
### Homestead’s Ermon Lane, rated the nation’s No. 2 receiver, had planned to announce his college choice on Saturday, but now says he’s not so sure. He said he will choose UM, UF, FSU, Alabama or Ohio State.
### Al Golden said freshman Ray Lewis III is “doing a great job” adjusting to cornerback. Lewis was a standout high school running back.
### Curious that Thurston Armbrister has been starting ahead of Alex Figueroa at linebacker for the Hurricanes the past two practices. Not sure that’s a good thing. Figueroa batted down a Gray Crow pass during Wednesday’s practice, and Tyrone Cornelius caught it for a touchdown.
### Duke Johnson and Dallas Crawford each had TD runs of 30-plus yards on Wednesday.

Bang stick?
If you got one hooked and dont have a permit you must take him quietly so the best options are hatchet between the eyes for small ones 7 ft or less, or axe for the bigger ones. Remember a gators brain is about the size of your thumbnail so youre just knocking him out and he will wake up so get the duct tape around that mouth.
