Defensive line transfers David Gilbert (Wisconsin) and Justin Renfrow (Virginia)
have joined the Miami Hurricanes football program, head coach Al Golden
announced Saturday. Junior college transfer Ufomba Kamalu, who signed with Miami
in February, was also cleared to participate in
practice.
Gilbert and
Renfrow each have one year of eligibility remaining and are eligible to play in
2013. Gilbert, Renfrow and Kamalu were all on the practice field Saturday for
the first time as Miami Hurricanes.
Gilbert, a 2012
honorable mention All-Big Ten defensive lineman at Wisconsin, is slated to compete at the “rush” position for the 2013
Hurricanes defense. In April,
Gilbert announced he would not return to the Wisconsin football team for the
2013 season due to recurring injuries in his right foot.
The 6-foot-4,
247-pound product from Coral Springs, Fla., recorded 42 tackles, 9.5 tackles for
loss and 4.0 sacks in 14 games (13 starts) as a redshirt junior in 2012 for the
Badgers, who lost in the Rose Bowl. His 2011 season was cut short after four
games due to a season-ending foot injury. Over his final 18 games for the
Badgers, Gilbert recorded 52 tackles, 13.0 tackles for a loss of 73 yards and
7.0 sacks for a total loss of 47 yards. Gilbert started 17 of his last 18 games
for Wisconsin.
Gilbert was a
member of three Wisconsin bowl teams – 2009 (Champs Sports Bowl), 2011 (Rose
Bowl) and 2012 (Rose Bowl). In 42 career games with the Badgers, he tallied 79
tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.
Renfrow appeared
in all 12 games for Virginia in 2012, making 11 tackles on the season. As a
redshirt sophomore in 2011, he appeared six of the Cavaliers’ 13 games, seeing
playing time against William & Mary, Indiana, North Carolina, Southern Miss
and Maryland. In 2010, he saw limited action on defense in four games as a
redshirt freshman for the Cavaliers.
Kamalu, a native
of Fayetteville, Ga., signed with the Hurricanes in February out of Butler
Community College in Kansas. As a sophomore at Butler in 2012, he recorded 54
tackles, 7.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and four fumble
recoveries.
The Hurricanes will hold the first of two closed preseason scrimmages Sunday at the Greentree Practice Fields.
Gotta love the added depth. 20 days till Gameday. Go Canes.

Is it just me or does it seem like we now have like 97 players on the 85 man roster?
Posted by: SOUP | August 10, 2013 at 12:40 PM
I just counted 19 DL on the UM roster.
NINETEEN!

Probably part of the secret settlement after Shalala brought the NCAA to their knees a few weeks ago. Miami gets an extra 30 scholarships this year to make up for NCAA malfeasance.
Posted by: TonyCane | August 10, 2013 at 01:06 PM
I think especially Gilbert will add some quality depth that will be useful.
Posted by: mountain cane | August 10, 2013 at 01:07 PM
Tony...I was seriously starting to think the same thing! Or maybe front-end loading this year to make up for a few lost schollies over the next couple of years?
Posted by: SOUP | August 10, 2013 at 01:11 PM
Just about every W/L prediction I have heard this year seems plausible to me. It just shows we really don't know what to expect, except we expect to be better. That's why I'm rolling with 12-0 this year. For fun baby. I'm just gonna try to enjoy the season and our players and their effort. Florida is a HUGE game. It is the test of the Golden Era. If we beat them, we have the makings of a special season.

The Dude, here's the viability of the Gators program after Miami gets through with them:

12% er here
The Fla Game comes down to Our DL depth VS their OL Depth. They like to pound it now, a Noon game in Miami in Early Septh will be brutal in that stadium. Their OL are big guys, 330 Pounders up front. We have to get out and score quick and force them to drive the length of the field on us. It is crucial we get rotate guys like Chick and Porter in and out to give them a blow. Last year those guys played 600 snaps and had nothing to give and was running in quicksand the end of a game. This year with these new Transfers we should have fresh guys in at all times. Our OL is in shape and deep, we lean on the Turds and pull this one off on our Depth and #17 golden arm.

Lol...soup. Someone needs to photoshop that picture and add Al Golden.

Win the ACC Coastal or this season is a flop. F beating the Gators and falling on our face again in conference. We have done that ish before let me see 2009 beat Oklahoma at home yet couldnt get over the hump in our Division much less Conference, lets see 2011 we beat Ohio State same thing as 2009. If we are not in Charlotte the first weekend in Charlotte playing Clemson or FSU in the ACC Title Game i will be freaking furious and i dont give a ish if we beat the Crocs by 50. ACC Title Game and win a Bowl Game and 10 plus wins or this season sucks eggs. Go Canes.

TS,
If we beat Florida, IMO there is NO path to winning fewer than 10 games and putting a hurt on the Coastal.

Soup I agree the Gator game must be a coming out party for the Golden era! I love the depth on the DL. It will soon be time to perform! vA cane I am will my brother. My sons are doing well. My youngest is a high school senior and he is busting his ass and my wallet playing summer baseball and trying to earn a scholarship. With or without baseball heis attending college.

The Dude U must have forgotten about 2009 and 2011 when we beat high profile teams at home how did that work out for us. I will wait.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 10, 2013 at 04:57 PM
Terrance sustained excellence. We can beat Florida and win the coastal. Time for "no excuses" for real. This squad is not the same as those two you mentioned before.
Posted by: SmatCane | August 10, 2013 at 05:54 PM
The road to Charlotte starts in 20 days thats all i have to say.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 10, 2013 at 06:06 PM
I agree if we beat Florida but lose out on the coastal it is a failure. I think we can do both though. I'm not impressed with Florida even after an 11 win season and I love that we get them at our house 2nd game of the season. I expect an upset. But more to your point consistency is essential. We can't lose to teams we should beat. And as much as it pains me to say it cause I hate obnoxious Gators fans most, if I had to choose an ACC championship win or the UF game... I'm taking the ACC. We need that momentum moving forward this year. But I think our offense is going to shock a very good UF defense.
Posted by: SmatCane | August 10, 2013 at 06:15 PM
Yes Sir ^^^^^ I think we do both I am just saying we just gotta take care of business this year no excuses because I am embarrassed that we havent played for the ACC title much less win it yet Wake Forest has an ACC Title since we have been in the conference. SMDH.

Don't feel bad CZ, that's happened to me a few times, I hate it when SOUP doesn't post "new blog". Gives you that feeling where you think you're talking to somebody, and when you turn around, that person isn't there anymore...damn I hate that $hit! LMAO!
Posted by: CaneRock | August 10, 2013 at 06:21 PM
+1 Terrance. And I feel if we are not at least inn the ACC ship game at least some recruits begin to wonder barring injury to Stephen Morris of course.
Posted by: SmatCane | August 10, 2013 at 06:31 PM
Yes Sir baring major injuries ^^^^^
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 10, 2013 at 06:48 PM
I didn't forget that we beat Oklahoma w/o Bradford and Ohio State minus Tressell.
Posted by: The Dude | August 10, 2013 at 07:09 PM
Yea and Florida is not the same team they were from last year did you see this years NFL draft so that is a lame comparison. They were high profile teams and our fans kept saying we win those games we will be on point but as the season went on it didnt happen that way. So nice try the Dude but I aint buying it.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 10, 2013 at 07:16 PM
We better beat FSWho this year we have lost 3 straight to them and only 3-6 since we joined the ACC in 2004. Not Good.

I will not take losing to anybody, much less Florida EASILY, but as much as it pains me to even say this I would take a loss to the Gators IF we beast BOTH FSU (I'll be at The Doak) and UVA.

UH, UMike and Ohio, I posted yesterday that national Recruiting GURU JC Shurburtt told me this in direct response via Twitter:
Lammons to SC and the other two to UF.
Posted by: SOUP | August 10, 2013 at 10:13 PM
With a college decision looming on Monday, Plantation cornerback Chris Lammons is down to three schools — South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama, according to Lammons and his high school coach Steve Davis.
Lammons, participating at the Miami Dolphins High School Media Day at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday, said the other two schools in his top five — Florida and Miami — are still in the running to some extent but his final three are set.
“You never know with these kids,” Davis said, “but [Lammons] told me it’s South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama just jumped back into the picture the last couple of days.”
Added Lammons: “That’s true, but I still like Florida. I have until tomorrow to look this whole thing over. In my mind, I haven’t really decided yet. Florida and Miami are [close to] home schools I’d love to go to.”
