As part of its 30th
anniversary celebration, the University of Miami will honor the 1983 National
Champion football team at halftime of its Aug. 30 season opener against Florida
Atlantic.
More than 50 players and coaches from the 1983 team are planning to attend, with more names being added to the growing list daily.
The 1983 National Champions
will be guests at the Hurricane Club Pre-Game Tailgate Aug. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at
Sun Life Stadium, and the team will be honored at halftime of the FAU
game.
“1983 was the linchpin that put into place the wonderful talent that was assembled and would continue to create the greatest college football dynasty since World War II,” former Miami Hurricanes head coach Howard Schnellenberger said. “I was thrilled when I learned the University was going to move up the next scheduled reunion so that I and many others could participate and enjoy.”
Upon his arrival in Coral Gables in 1979, Schnellenberger boldly predicted that the Hurricanes would win a National Championship within five years. Critics scoffed, but Schnellenberger’s players backed him up by doing exactly what their coach said they would – win a championship and become No. 1.
The 1983 Hurricanes ran the table on the season’s final 11 games. Victories over Notre Dame, Louisville and West Virginia helped move UM steadily up the national rankings, and a regular-season-ending 17-16 last-second win at Florida State propelled them into the 50th Orange Bowl Classic.
At the Orange Bowl, the underdog Hurricanes got off to a 17-0 start against No. 1-ranked Nebraska and never looked back, prevailing 31-30 in what many called the most exciting college football game ever played. The win gave Miami its first of five Football National Championships.
Albert Bentley, who scored what turned out to be Miami’s winning touchdown will be one of the 50+ players and coaches attending the reunion.
“That (1983 National Championship) was the foundation that put us on the map as a serious football program,” said Bentley, who went on to play eight years in the NFL and is now a financial planner in Fort Myers. “The only thing that gives validation as a great team is a championship. I’m really looking forward to (the reunion). College is so different than the pros …in college you go in with the same class and you go out with the same class, college really is a band of brothers.”
Also in attendance will be Kenny Calhoun, now in his 25th year in law enforcement in Polk County and the player who knocked down Nebraska’s two-point conversion attempt with 48 seconds remaining to seal the upset victory.
“It is important to remember
that we did it first,” Calhoun said. “We showed that with good leadership and a
good bunch of guys, you can achieve your goals.”
In anticipation of the 1983 National Champion team being honored as the season opener, the team, as well as Miami’s other four football national titles, was the focus of HurricaneSports.com’s #BuildingChampions summer series.

In other news
TicketCity.com, an online ticket broker, says its list was based on an algorithm designed to identify the 2012 fans bases that engage with a team most frequently online and offline. The algorithm heavily weighed the offline metrics: home attendance, home ticket price average and percentage of stadium capacity filled.
Other factors included road attendance and road ticket price, as well as most Facebook “likes” and Twitter followers.
Using that barometer, Tampa Bay was rated the worst of the NFL’s 32 fan bases, followed by Kansas City, Miami, Jacksonville and St. Louis.
Dallas, New England, Green Bay, the New York Giants, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Denver topped the engagement rankings.

Outside of event involving my my family, that Orange Bowl in Jan of 84 was quite simply the most exciting, most electric most amazing night I have ever experienced.
Ive been to almost every Cane game since that night, and every other championship and every other amazing game since that night has been gravy.
That team was very, very special.
Posted by: Sam | August 13, 2013 at 09:51 PM
I was thrilled when K. Calhoun just barely tipped away that two point conversion, but always wondered what Bernie and the offense might have done with 48 seconds left and needing only a field goal. Glad we didn't have to find out! The Flea might have kicked a FG through just like he did at FSU. That game vs. ECU toward the end of the season was the scariest game that almost ruined the season that nobody seems to remember. I was at that terrible opener in Gainesville, the great 10 point comeback at Tally and every home game that year, including the OBC vs. Nebraska. What a season, and what a bowl day and series of outcomes that had to happen! RIP, Stan Shakespeare #6!

The fact that low performers lkke grkmble are translating out and good players want to leave good programs and transfer in is a good sign that things are moving in the right direction. Gilbert wants to join the canes because he sees an opportunity to make it into NFL-U but that whiskey would not provide. I think Gilbert senses an opportunity and he realizes that the canes willbe good and he can be a part of it

I just hate it when the offense dominates a scrimmage. This means our D still sucks. Back in the good old days the Defense always dominated. Remember "Offense wins games, defense wins Championships." Just hope we can build a good D in 2013 and make a run in 2014. D'no willing!
Posted by: TGU_CANE | August 14, 2013 at 12:16 AM
U have to win games in order to win championships people U cant win if the score is 0-0. I love defense like everyone else. ask the 1999 Tampa Bay Bucs with that great defense what did they win hell ask our 1994 Miami Hurricanes team with that great defense if U dont have enough offense U aint winning titles and U better have a good kicking game ask FSU about that. U win titles with all three fazes of offense, defense, and special teams. Anyone that says other wise dont know football. IJS.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 14, 2013 at 12:24 AM
TSully... Really?
Did you just type that? Smh...
Tampa Bay didn't a Super bowl that year but they did win 1 with a dominant defense & a decent offense a few years later. The Ravens won a super bowl with a dominant D & a below average offense. All 5 of our titles at the "U" were won with dominant defenses. Our defenses almost always shined the brightest in big games with our title teams.
& the saying goes: "Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships". Get right.
The point behind that phrase is this. Plenty of teams have won titles in team sports with a dominant D & an average O. Very, very few have won a title with a dominant offense & an average D.
If you don't know this, you really don't know team sports. Let alone football...
Lets stop condoning not having a great defense just because ours has been garbage recently.
WE WON'T WIN A TITLE UNTIL OUR D GETS DOMINANT. PERIOD...
Posted by: CoCane | August 14, 2013 at 01:32 AM
I aint condoning anything I just saying If one side of the ball sucks U aint winning jack. So having a dominant defense and a piss poor offense U still aint winning jack and U know i aint lying. Likewaise U can have a dynamic offense and defense sucks like ours did last year and U aint winning nothing. WE AINT WINNING NOTHING TILL ALL PHASES ARE DOMINANT.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 14, 2013 at 02:15 AM
LOL did U say all 5 of our titles were won by defense alone. Thats funny I guess some of the offensive players on those championship squads would beg to differ i think they contributed a great deal along with those dynamic defenses and good special teams.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 14, 2013 at 02:21 AM
We all know the game and passionate about our Canes I guess I just feel like when I hear Defense win championships its basically comes off as Offense and Special Teams are just out there pissing wind and I just think thats stupid. That being said I hope our defense kicks butt along with our Offense and honestly I hope our Special Teams most importantly our kicking game is on point because We will be in a couple of close games and our kicking game cant cost us.

### Who has stood out as pass-rushers? Defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio said two: Tyriq McCord and freshman Al-Quadin Muhammad. “They’re our fastest guys off the edge.”… Freshman linebacker Jermaine Grace impressed UM coaches during Sunday's scrimmage.... Please see the last post for an item on UM's new defensive line additions. Even before those additions, running back Eduardo Clements said it's clear that UM's defensive line is "much better" than last year.
### ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit said off air Tuesday that UM is a top-20 caliber team and “people don’t have a full appreciation for how good Stephen Morris is. If they can improve as much as we anticipate on the defensive side,… Miami can be a team to look out for in the ACC.”
### UM's Clements said one problem last season was “people crying about” how many reps they got in practice. Those players are gone “and no one here thinks it’s all about me,” he said. “[Golden] said, ‘If you are going to cry about reps, you might as well leave.’”

2015 McArthur Safety Kendrell McFadden (6’3”, 190) claims 47 offers from some of the top programs in the country, but instead of worrying about college right now, the top prospect is trying to make sure he excels in the classroom.
“Everything’s been going good with recruiting, but I’ve actually been focusing on my academics more than football. I don’t want to just meet the criteria, I want to be above it,” said McFadden.
As far as recruiting goes, a few schools are sticking out to McFadden early in the process.
“Ohio State, Florida State, LSU right now. It’s really a lot to pick from, but like I said I’m really just focusing on academics right now.”
The lengthy safety has mentioned Miami as one of his favorites in the past. Is that still the case?
“Yes, definitely. I like the DB coach a lot. We really connected (at camp) because of the way he coaches to play smooth, aggressive, and calm at the same time.”

Canes Camp Week 2: 8/13 Post scrimmage updates
Week Two kicked off with talk of this weekend's scrimmage being the main focus. Today we got to find out who impressed, who needs to step up, and how the new faces are integrating into the team.
Jimmy Gaines, starting MLB and "QB" of the defense, didn't seem pleased with the play of his unit during the scrimmage this weekend. He tipped his cap to the offense, admitting that they got the better of the defense; but was confident that the defense would get revenge. When asked about the new additions, he said he was happy to have them and added when it comes to depth - the more the merrier.
Defensive Coordinator Mark D'Onfrio wasn't quite as down on the performance of the defense, but did say he would like to see improvement in the areas of open field tackling and pursuit to the ball. He wasn't surprised by it, though stating, "...generally the first one (scrimmage) is sloppy because you don't tackle live until that situation". When asked about David Gilbert (transfer from Wisconsin) and the possibility of him starting, D'Onfrio said that will be up to David; an opinion that was echoed later by Al Golden. They both agree, if healthy, he has the talent, but has a long way to go to get into playing shape; and will have to earn his spot when the time comes. Both coaches say that all the new transfers have more than enough time to get integrated into the team and learn the schemes before the start of the season.
Coach Al Golden also had the defense's back, saying that it was situational football that included placing the ball at the 3,10, and 20 yard lines. He mentioned the previous scrimmage where we had limited access (and told not to report on); and brought up the fact the defense "put it to" the offense. Since he brought it up, I can go ahead and confirm his assessment of it - the defense was great while we were there. A few int's by the linebackers had Morris pretty angry. Fig was running around taking people's heads off; and the DL wasn't getting pushed around by a well above average offensive line. Duke and Dallas both broke long runs, but over all the defense did own the day.
In 'not exciting but really important' news, Coach Golden had high praise for K Matt Goudis saying he was 3 for 3 on kicks all of which were 45 yards or more.
Deon Bush was going to go through his first full practice today (and see how it goes). When asked, Golden said he should be fine for week one.
Artie Burns did well in the scrimmage and Jermaine Grace "...made you take notice." Grace has been "doing really good things" and has been put in on all the special teams situations. Some thought he may redshirt but it appears he may spend his freshman year contributing on special teams. Coach D'Onofrio said that Al-Quadin Muhammad and Tyriq McCord were his "...fastest guys off the edge."
In injury news Freshman OT Sunny Odogwu was not on the field this morning. Nothing official by the team was released so far, so lets just go with 'undisclosed injury' for now. We will keep you updated. With the loss of Danny Isidora, and Malcolm Bunche being nicked up every few days, Miami doesn't need anyone else going down. UM may have depth on the O line, but at this rate it won't for long. Hopefully it's minor and we can move on.
As we get closer to the season, I had planned on giving the color jersey report a bit more attention (black on defense means starter, orange on offense means starter, etc.); but today Denzel Perryman was in a green back up jersey, so I'm gonna hold off a bit. If someone stepped up and unseated Prez at LB, we have an unexpected freak athlete to run and tell the world about (AKA the next coming of Ray Lewis). But chances are he needed a kick in the butt, or someone else gave a great effort... either way let's wait 'til Friday to see who's wearing what.
