16/17MIAMI (3-0) 77, SAVANNAH STATE (1-3) 7
SUN LIFE STADIUM • SEPT. 21, 2013 • ATTENDANCE: 42,571
MISCELLANEOUS AND SERIES NOTES:
• First game between Miami and Savannah State
• Was largest margin of victory for Al Golden as a head coach.
Gray Crow threw his first career touchdown pass.
TEAM NOTES:
• 77 points marks most in program history, breaking the record of 75 in 1954.
• Miami was 6-for-9 on third downs.
• Miami extends its win streak to five straight games - the first such streak since the 2008 regular season (Oct.11 – Nov. 13). The Hurricanes have not won six straight games since 2005 season (Sept. 24 – Nov. 12).
• The 3:53 scoring drive in the second quarter was the longest of the season. All scoring drives prior to that had been 2:49 or less.
And of course, Gray Crow threw his first career touchdown pass.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Stephen Morris moves to 10th on UM all-time passing list with 5,272.
• Duke Johnson’s 95-yard kickoff return to open the game matches the longest of his career.
• Allen Hurns’ 80-yard touchdown reception was the longest of his career.
• 36 yard reception for Clive Walford, his longest of the 2013 season.
• 17 of Walford’s last 18 touches have been first downs or touchdowns.
• Duke Johnson’s 95-yard return is tied for the eighth-longest in program history. It’s a four-way tie – three of the four are Duke (vs. Bethune – 9/17/2012, vs. Virginia – 11/10/2012 and tonight). The other is Tremain Mack, who returned one against Syracuse 11/30/96.
• Deon Bush sees first action of the 2013 season.
• Duke Johnson has 100 or more all-purpose yards in six of his last seven games.
• Stephen Morris has a passing touchdown in each of his last eight games.
• That 80-yard pass from Morris to Hurns is the second-longest of his career, shy of the 87-yarder he completed last season against USF (Nov. 17, 2012). The catch represents the longest for Hurns, besting his previous high of 41 yards from sophomore year (Oct. 8, 2011 vs. Virginia Tech).
• Duke Johnson has scored a touchdown in seven straight games dating back to last year’s 30-12 win over Virginia Tech on Nov. 1, 2012.
• Stacey Coley caught a career-first touchdown pass.
• Crawford’s 3 TDs are the first for a Hurricane since Duke Johnson accomplished the feat against the Duke Blue Devils Nov. 24, 2012.
• Gus Edwards scores first career TD (3 on the night).
• Gray Crow threw first career touchdown pass.
Did I mention that Gray Crow threw his first career touchdown pass?
Gus!

A win's always nice, even if this one shouldn't be too hard to move past. Glad to see some of the kids get PT, wish we could have given any walkon QB that we might have a snap. But its all good, assuming Duke and Morris are ok.
Posted by: j.w. | September 21, 2013 at 11:13 PM
And even though there was no competition to speak of, I'll give props to Williams. He throws a catchable ball, gets rid of the ball quick, and seems accurate. And yes, Soup, Crow looked good as well.

77-7 win I love It. First 3-0 start since 2004. Go Canes!

As the Crow flies...
Posted by: SOUP | September 21, 2013 at 11:41 PM
On what he learned from the game…
“I think we learned about a lot of individuals. Ryan Williams stepped up. I thought Gus Edwards stepped up. Beau Sandland stepped up. We learned a little bit about Stacy [Coley] and his game. There were a lot of defensive guys that played hard. I think we’re coming out of it healthy, which was my primary concern once it got a little bit lopsided.”
On any concerns about quarterback Stephen Morris’ health…
“No, I just saw him. He looks good. I think it was 21-0 or around there [when he got hurt]. It was either 14-0, then Ryan [Williams] comes in and we score and it’s 21-0. There’s no need for him to go back in, so we just held him out. The x-rays were negative. We’ll be cautious with it, we’ll get him off his feet in the next 48 hours, but it looks like he’ll be fine.”
On what he saw from wide receiver Stacy Coley…
“He did a great job on the kick return, made some nice moves on the punt return, he caught a nice little screen out there. We’re trying to get him going. He has had good week, so I’m pleased he carried it into the game. Obviously the jitters are behind him now.”
On a strong performance from running back Gus Edwards…
“Gus is getting better every week. He’s a big back. I thought he ran hard. I did. I thought he ran hard. It’s going to be a learning opportunity for Gus.”
On the fear of injured players…
“That was my greatest fear from the time it got to 35-0, to be honest with you. We went quickly to second and then quickly to third teams. I had a long talk with coach
[Earnest Wilson] before and a long talk with him after. I’ve been there. I was on the other side of those at Temple. I wanted to make sure he knew we were doing everything in our power not to [run up the score], and I know on his end he was trying to teach his team how to keep fighting. I’ve been in his shoes. I just wanted him to know from our standpoint, we were trying to be gracious in victory and not do anything dumb.”
On his initial reaction to Stephen Morris’ injury…
“Same thought as all you guys. I’m being honest. It’s so difficult because I always get the questions going into a game. ‘Are you going to sit so-and-so?’ The reality is these guys work so hard. Try and go tell Stephen he’s not playing after a bye week. It was an unfortunate circumstance, we’re blessed and grateful that he’s healthy and that he’s going to be okay. And at the same time, we learned a lot about Ryan [Williams]. I thought Gray Crow came in and did a good job too. He has had a good [past] seven to 10 days here, which is good.”
On what he saw from linebacker Jermaine Grace…
“He’s playing hard. He has got to study the game more, he has to prepare more, he has to learn that process. He doesn’t know it yet. The older guys are trying to mentor him in that realm. He has to be a bigger factor on special teams.”
On high completion percentages for quarterbacks Ryan Williams and Gray Crow…
It’s good for our competition. I was proud of Ryan, because it wasn’t like we had the time to say ‘hey, you’re going in next series’ when the defense was out there. He got thrust into it, and he had good poise, good command of everything. I thought he spun the ball well.

That was awesome

MIAMI PLAYERS:
Gus Edwards On being a bigger back…
I think that is what the coaches want me to step up and do. They want me to be a big guy that runs between the tackles. But as far as playing time, that’s up to the coaches.
On scoring three touchdowns tonight...
I was very excited. I haven’t scored that many touchdowns since my last game in high school, so I was pretty happy.
Gray Crow on how it felt to get in the game...
It felt great. Somebody this week told me that when opportunity knocks, its knocks very quietly. I kept those words really close this week, knowing that I may or may not have an opportunity to play.
But in the end anybody who saw him play tonight could clearly see that he was by far the best QB in the ACC.

So, I just went over to ESPN's page for USF, our next opponent:
http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/58/south-florida-bulls
USF is 0-3 at this point, and actually lost to FAU, 28-10, last week. It looks like UM's scrubs are likely to see a fair amount of action next week, too.

DJ Moonbat U didnt have to go to ESPN for those stats if U reading the Space U would already know that. But the negative nellies was saying we would only win like 35-10 and stuff lol cats have no faith. Go Canes!
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | September 22, 2013 at 12:26 AM
As I said, the Canes will cover the spread without breaking a good sweat. They set a new school scoring record without trying that hard. The third string was ready to play. This is the first 3 - 0 start since 2004. Al Golden is building something special.

Dude, Willie Will, SOUP... Nailed your breakout players. I can't believe I didn't say Edwards as I was thinking it all week.
I'm all aboard The Bus.

As I said multiple times, including in January when we were trying to pull him... The Bus is gonna be a good one!

Ryan Williams saw Stephen Morris after the game and said he doesn't know if Morris will play vs USF
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | September 22, 2013 at 01:19 AM
Williams looked VERY COMFORTABLE in the pocket, more than Morris has looked this year. Yeah I know it was against SS but it is what it is
Soup, who did you say the best qb in the ACC is? I missed it
Posted by: WWIN | September 22, 2013 at 02:12 AM
Honestly I wouldnt play Morris, Duke, Hagans, McDermott, Scott, and who else is hurt against USF which like Savannah State is another jamboree er game. Get Ready for October 5th ACC opener against Georgia Tech which seems like its gonna have huge implications in that game. Go Canes!

He doesn't need to and prolly will not play.
Posted by: SOUP | September 22, 2013 at 08:09 AM
As TSully said we don't need to play anybody that is "nicked up" against USF. Save them for GT. It appears that the only game we are gonna need EVERYBODY 100% for is FSU.

77 points makes me oh so happy!
Now about those injuries? McDermott and Morris are KEY. Anyone with a status update?
Posted by: SOUP | September 22, 2013 at 08:20 AM
Soon after Morris hooked up with wide receiver Allen Hurns for an 80-yard touchdown, the senior signal-caller's night was over. Morris was wrapped up by Savannah State's Alex Wierzbicki with 8:51 remaining in the opening quarter, appearing to have twisted his right ankle.
After throwing an incomplete pass, Morris remained on the ground and was treated by UM's medical personnel. The quarterback left the field unassisted but never returned, yielding to junior Ryan Williams, who passed for 176 yards and two scores.
Third-string quarterback Gray Crow entered the game late in the second quarter—another indication the rout was on as Miami led 49-0 at the break.

MORE FROM TIMMY:
SPECIAL, SPECIAL TEAMS
_ After a ridiculous 2-return, 183-yard night last night, Miami leads all FBS teams with a 41.7-yard kickoff-return average this season. The Hurricanes have returned six kickoffs all year: They've gone for 95, 88, 16, 22, 18 and 11 yards.
_ Miami became the first team since Kansas State in 2009 to average more than 90 yards on kickoff returns (minimum: 2) in a game.
AND THE KICKER(s)
_ Miami K Matt Goudis became the just 10th kicker in the last 15 years of major college football to go at least 11 for 11 on extra points in a game.
_ Goudis scored 11 points Saturday night. That's more than 37 FBS and FCS teams who played this week did.
_ Miami P Pat O'Donnell remained fourth nationally with a punting average of 47.6 yards. By the time the South Florida-Miami matchup starts, O'Donnell will have gone 20 days, 20 hours and 39 minutes and counting without punting in a game.

After Johnson’s big kickoff to start the game, Miami scored on its first play from scrimmage on a 4-yard touchdown run by Dallas Crawford, who would add another score when he caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Williams in the second quarter. His third score was a 16-yard touchdown run, also in the second, staked Miami to a 42-0 lead with 7:19 left before half.
