Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden released his team's latest depth chart heading into Saturday's ACC opener against Georgia Tech.
Miami (4-0) is No. 14 in the latest AP and USA TODAY Coaches Top 25 polls and enters its ACC opener on a six-game winning streak, including a four-game series streak against Georgia Tech (3-1, 2-1). Saturday's game will kick at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Senior Jared Wheeler and junior Shane McDermott remain co-starters at center. Wheeler has started the last two games in place of an injured McDermott.
Sophomore Herb Waters and freshman Stacy Coley are still listed as co-starters at the slot receiver, while Waters and junior Phillip Dorsett are still co-starters at the third wideout spot.
On defense, freshman Alex Figueroa and junior Thurston Armbrister are listed as co-starters at outside linebacker.

Monday notes: Hurricanes locking down for Georgia Tech week
by Matt Porter
CORAL GABLES – Welcome to ACC season.
Clearly the stakes are higher this week as Miami prepares for its first conference game, against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
On Monday, a group of reporters were led onto the practice field by staff members for regular viewing of Hurricanes workouts – UM usually allows the media to watch 15 minutes – but were escorted away as soon as coach Al Golden noticed them, about five minutes after arriving.
A couple notes:
* Senior running back Eduardo Clements (hamstring) was wearing a red (no-contact) jersey and working out separate from the team.
* Redshirt freshman cornerback Nate Dortch, who has not appeared on the depth chart for several weeks, wore a walking boot on his right leg.
* Redshirt freshman guard Danny Isidora, recovering from foot surgery, was moving well. On Sunday, Golden said he believed Isidora could return to action next week.
* Receiver Rashawn Scott (shoulder) was also in red.

The second West Virginia's upset win over Oklahoma State came to an end on Saturday you knew what was coming, and West Virginia fans did not disappoint.
According to the Associated Press, following the Mountaineers win there were 10 fires set and one car flipped in Morgantown. The only shocking thing was that there were no couches burned, but that's because burning couches is now illegal in Morgantown.

As I read it... not good... I am not saying that #44 is not good... I just think that if the staff have a plan for a consistent short yardage game, then, there really should be someone beefier as the second FB.
I would really like to see us having a good consistent short yardage play... some of the suggestions in earlier post make sense to me.

Posted by: LB | September 30, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Wheeler was always a good player, but McDermott's quickness/mobility gave Him the edge. If you watched those 3 on 3 drills during the Spring/Summer, the LBs would run into Wheeler, and just STOP!
I can see Wheeler playing at the next level...ala Tyler Horn.

Happy Monday, Canes fans. Once again my kid's soccer game forced me to watch this one on tape, and for the first time in forever, I am happy to say I was bored to death watching it! Knowing the score made it hard to follow, as we just rolled over the Bulls. I still watched it all, still loved it, but there wasn't much excitement in the game and that's just the way I like it when we're playing awful teams. I did get to see the Savannah State game live, but not knowing the final score made it a lot more interesting.

Miami's first road test was a breeze.
The 15th-ranked Hurricanes scored on their first three possessions and dominated defensively during a 49-21 rout of winless South Florida on Saturday.
Miami (4-0) has yet to trail this season, but coach Al Golden felt USF was much better than its record and posed a different challenge for his team in its final tuneup for Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Stephen Morris and a talented group of speedy receivers set the tone for an impressive offensive display, and the Hurricanes played stifling defense before giving up a long touchdown drive at the end.
"I think we were ready to go," Golden said.
"Our whole game plan was to continue to push the ball and continue to play smart," Morris added. "Offensively, the receivers had a great game."
Morris threw for two touchdowns before limping off with an ankle injury that's not considered serious, and Duke Johnson scored a TD in his eighth consecutive game for the Hurricanes, who are off to their best start since 2004, when they opened the season with six straight wins.
At 0-4 under first-year coach Willie Taggart, USF is off to the worst start in school history and has dropped 13 of 14 dating to last season.
"That's a really good football team, and we've got to play so much better in order to have a chance ... because of where we're at right now," Taggart said. "Until we get to where we want to be, we've got to play perfect football in order to compete with a team like Miami."

For those saying we "need 2 weeks to prepare for GT"...
Golden on "HOW" on Joe Rose: "U get ready for it in a week by making it a part of your year-round preperation. We devote time to it in the Spring. We devote time to it in training camp. Because of who they are, in our division, it's gotta be part of your preperation"
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 30, 2013 at 01:00 PM
Golden on if he pays attention to the polls (moving up to #14):
"We don't even talk about it. What we're gonna talk about is why we're reaching the ball over on the 2 yard line. We're gonna talk about why we get a 100 yard kick return called back because of a hold. We're gonna talk about why we get a 50 yard punt return called back for a clip".
Did I just say that earlier?

HD, I don't recognize this Hurricane Defense. They actually sack the QB and force turnovers. How much is competition and how much is marked improvement? Not sure outside of Florida State if there are many left on the schedule that will test that notion.
Heather Dinich
AA and I are wondering that, too, Kevin. You can say the same for a lot of teams in the ACC right now. They LOOK better, but how much better are they really? Florida is obviously a marquee win, but ... they've got to prove they can keep it up in conference play.

No. To me the Canes are still the team to beat. They were my preseason pick to the win the division and I'm sticking with that pick until proven otherwise. I think most of us can agree, though, that they've got something to prove. My thing is consistency. Ok, so you beat Florida. Don't lose to GT then.
