Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden released his team's latest depth chart heading into Saturday's ACC opener against Georgia Tech.

UM's sacks in particular are momentum killers. They really put the opponents in a bind.
Multiple folks are getting in the action. AQM and McCord are hard to handle on 3rd down. The blitzes aren't overused, but timely.
UM's remaining games are meaningful and must-win.
Destroy Georgia Tech.

We also have 7 INTs. Just 4 less than we did all of last season.
I'm working on finding this year's FF and FR numbers right now.

What I want to see vs GT:
FIX THE DAMN SPECIAL TEAMS PENALTIES!!
We can NOT afford those types of penalties that negate big plays/field position changes getting into the bulk of our schedule.
Thank U. This message was provided by Ohio Cane's Optimist Point of View.

I will have to say, honestly without those penalties those two big plays wouldn't have happened

#Canes freshman RB Gus Edwards said he was practicing on goal line "torpedo" work today after being held out of the end zone vs USF

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 30, 2013 at 12:33 PM
I noticed that too. Al Golden knows what he is doing. The coaches put in Dallas Crawford after Edwards failed to get the TD in that goal line situation. Being a good goal-line RB is more than just being big - you have to have good instincts to the hole as well, and coverting a TD in short yardage when the D knows what you are going to do is the hardest thing for a RB.

Gus needs to put on his big boy pants inside the 10 yard line. We need a back that will punch it in down there. I think Hagens can be that guy but the staff wants him lead blocking.

The ST blunders are very glaring. Many casual football people let them go over their heads. On the contrary, they are absolutely critical, as Ohio and the great Canerock noted.
It is unacceptable. STs are a matter of pride, hustle, relentlessness, ruthlessness and intelligence. Get there fast, make the block....if you cannot do so....do not hold or clip....cannot do it. Go back in time, to any game....but especially BIG games where you are matched with an equal or superior opponent. Those ST plays....kick off, kick return, punt, punt return, fg unit, kick and punt block.........they so often make a difference. We had stupid penalties against an inferior opponent....maybe some thought it did not matter. Dammit it matters every time....cause you play with apathy against USF.....it will carry over against FSU.....and will happen again in critical situation against a very good if not slightly superior opponent. Point is do it right against USF, FSU, Denver Broncos or The Little Sisters of the Poor....right every time!!!! JMO

True...and that holding call on Hagens looked suspect, looked like a good takedown to me.

GO CANES!!!
Posted by: Keoki | September 30, 2013 at 03:12 PM
respect, shuh-mecht. We'll roll past Ga Tech then they'll say we still haven't beaten anyone. Then we'll roll until we meet up with FSU and we'll still hear that. Then we'll beat them and they'll still say it. Then we'll beat the $EC champ and they will have no choice but to respect us.

I do like the fact that when we watch a game, the coaches notice something and go right back to the drawing board and fixes it. The team always seem to come back the next week better and something that needs corrected. Player development is at an all-time high. Golden and his staff really have this thing rolling in the right direction.

That and the will NOT to be denied.
Gus is big and strong for a freshman. But he is just that, a freshman. Wait until he has a full year under his belt and a full offseason with Swasey. Then the beast within will be available for ALL to see.

Depending on the staff's wishes, he could easily bulk up to take the role of Mo Hagens.
Hardly anyone talks about him but he will be sorely missed, tbh.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 30, 2013 at 04:44 PM
At risk of stating the obvious (for UMike) when a player like Gus is in HS he is bigger, stronger and faster than most, whereas in college everybody is big, strong and fast. So in HS it is easier to get away with poor technique (pads to high, poor leg drive). But It takes more than raw talent at the next level and it mostly comes down to technique, attitude and the will to win.
It takes a special type of mentality and mindset to believe that failure (and losing) is not an option.
Posted by: 86Cane | September 30, 2013 at 05:23 PM
On the ST penalties,
Some are understandable, the ones that are not for example somebody blocking somebody in the back on the left side of the field when the ball is on the right side of the field. The ones we had this past game had to happen, if Mo didn't take that dude down he would have tackled Duke, if TH3 didn't block that dude in the back he would have tackled Dorsett.

Canes, at least a bit surprising to me, are only 5 1/2 point favorites at home on saturday. People aren't totally convinced apparently.
I do think we handle them fairly easily if we come ready to play. Remind the D it is a 3:30 start. They started the last 12:00 game around 12:15.
GT is not a team to fall behind on. It seems to stoke them and they just bludgeon you. I won't ever forget the night game in ATL a few years back where we got crushed from start to finish.
On the other hand, they don't come back well.
I'm just a bit concerned that the last real tough competition we had was a month ago. These guys will play more like them than the last 2 guys.

We have to know what we can and cannot do on ST; you have to think quickly. I am sure AG ands Co have addressed it and we will improve. I have seen so much improvement in so many areas I cannot complain. We have played 1 decent team; we will see as the season progresses. We got to take em 1 x 1 never look ahead past your opponent, don't look back stay focused on now. It is critical to get all 3 phases synchronized as we head into the grind of the schedule. I want ST to be big factor; the emotion it releases when successful is incredible. I consider it very important; JMO.
Speaking of now, we rolled Sat on a team that was good; I took my starters out after start of 3rd quarter. 39-7 rolled their azzes. The hits were something. We have done well so far; 122 points to 17 advantage in 4 games. We don't care about the past; we play a 0-4 team Sat. I start my regs, mix my others in immediately as I like this coach and will try to keep it decent. You never know though we are working hard.

That kid gets another Winter/Spring/Summer in the weight room...LOOK OUT! But for a big man though, He has some good footwork, doesn't waste a step on those zone runs. He reminds me of a bigger version of Stephen McGuire.
