“When he’s ready he’s going to be special,” said UM running backs coach Hurlie Brown, who compares Edwards to Brown’s former Hurricanes teammate, James Stewart. “He’s a freshman, 18-year-old kid right now. We just got to bring him along the right way. The quicker I can get him ready, the quicker he’s going to help us out.”

Thanks brother CaneRock. I also believe Gus is gonna be a real productive player for us. He just needs experience.

His teammates call him Gus The Bus, a compliment for the way he carries defenders on his back or runs over them like bowling pins in practice.
Eventually, when the Hurricanes are no longer riding the Duke Johnson Express, Gus Edwards could be the running back that carries the University of Miami. But right now, the 6-2, 225-pound freshman from Staten Island, N.Y., is adjusting to college life, learning the playbook and pass protection schemes while awaiting his next handoff.

I doubt I was first, but I've been calling Gus "The Bus" since I saw his highlights last year as a recruit we were trying to reel in

What's up Canespacers? Late evening out here...by the way, Mumford & Sons is a great concert.
Hey SOUP - Dabo Swinney seems to be doing a good job, but he is about the only other ACC coach I'd consider. I think AG has done a superb job especially given the challenges the NCAA threw his way. I'm pretty happy where we are with the coach we have. Now it's time to see the team take the next step and get back to respectability. After that?...bring on the dynasty!

FOOTBALL TEAM
**There seems to be confusion about the redshirt policy every year. If a student-athlete plays a single snap, their eligibility clock is ticking and they can no longer redshirt for that season. The medical redshirt comes into play at the end of a player’s eligibility where a student-athlete may apply for another year if they sustained a season-ending injury during one of their seasons and played less than 30% of the snaps during that season. Having said that, let’s talk a look at the freshman class to see their progress:
--Artie Burns: The cornerback from Miami Northwestern has played in both games this season. He has seen time on special teams as well as at corner against FAU, where he made a couple nice plays late in that game. Burns has been named a co-starter for this week’s game, so expect to see more of him in the coming weeks.
--Jamal Carter: Similarly to Burns, expect to see more of Carter over the next two weeks. With Deon Bush’s status still up in the air, Miami is one injury away at the safety position from Carter needing to play meaningful snaps. We saw him play in mop-up duty against FAU in week one, but there is a good chance he sees a lot of snaps this weekend against Savannah State and possibly USF next week.
--Stacy Coley: Coley is another freshman who will be slowly worked into more playing time. After dropping a couple potential big passes against FAU in his first game, Coley was not on the field much against Florida. Coach Golden has stated that Coley will be back in the mix this week and look for James Coley to give him some easy chances in order for him to gain some confidence heading into the meat of the schedule.
--Standish Dobard: The tight end out of Louisiana saw time against FAU, but I don’t expect for him to need to play a lot of meaningful snaps this season. He enrolled in January and was able to get his feet wet, so there wasn’t too much of a need to redshirt, but there is just quality, veteran depth right now at his position between Clive Walford, Asante Cleveland, and Beau Sandland.
--Gus Edwards: Running back is one of the easier transitions from the high school to college level, so ideally Edwards can be a player who gains a larger role as the season progresses. The big back missed some practice time during the fall due to some qualification tie-up, so he is continuing to become more comfortable with the playbook. Edwards got some carries against FAU, but it might be tough for him to supplant two solid veterans in Eduardo Clements and Dallas Crawford as Duke’s back-up.
--Corn Elder: I thought Elder would be a prime candidate for a redshirt this season due to the depth at cornerback, but the two-sport athlete (basketball) had a couple tackles against FAU.
--Alex Figueroa: Most people know by now that Figueroa is already playing a big role in the linebackers unit. He has seen the field a lot in the first two games and made big hits against both FAU and UF. I expect his role to increase as the season goes on due to his versatility.
--Alex Gall: Has not seen the field yet and will most likely redshirt as most suspected before Gall even got to Miami. He has potential to become a very reliable lineman.
--Jermaine Grace: Saw time against FAU at linebacker and has played in both games on special teams. He would have benefitted physically from a redshirt year, but he is ahead of the curve with high football IQ and understanding of the game. A larger role is not out of the question, especially as a 3rd down linebacker in coverage like we’ve seen with Tyrone Cornileus.
--Hunter Knighton: A shoulder injury back during fall practice will force Knighton to miss the entire season. He was not expected to have a huge role on the line this year, but could have provided some depth considering he enrolled early.
--Ray Lewis III: Will most likely redshirt.
--Al-Quadin Muhammad: The highly-touted pass rusher has already seen extensive time as expected. His role probably won’t change much throughout the year.
--Naim Mustafaa: The freshman transfer from Oklahoma State might have had an opportunity to contribute this season if not for having to sit out per NCAA rules.
--Sunny Odogwu: Some expected him to see the field this year as quality depth, but has not thus far. Ideally, he would redshirt, but he is physically ready so there is still a chance we see him.
--Kevin Olsen: Unless something drastic happens, he will redshirt.
--Walter Tucker: Tucker is currently the backup fullback so there is a possibility he sees the field at some point, but I expect him to redshirt.

Another week of big games that put the best players in the country on a national stage. For some, they stepped up and continued to show the draft community that they are a valuable prospect. However, others who may have been thought highly of, disappointed.
Rising
Denzel Perryman (LB, Miami): The key to beating any SEC team is dominating them up front on both sides of the ball. Miami, whose defense has played quite poorly recently, benefited by a phenomenal game by their junior linebacker. While he is not the biggest linebacker, he used his quickness and intelligence to take down and out ball carrier after ball carrier. His productive and impactful day was a big part of Miami’s upset of Florida While he does not project to an inside linebacker, he looks like one hell of a weak side linebacker.

^^^^^^^
Falling
Seantral Henderson (OT, Miami): A gifted as he is, Henderson is maddeningly inconsistent. The past two weeks he has really failed to be consistent in pass protection, poor footwork being his true downfall. Against Florida, he was abused snap to snap and contributed to the poor play by his offense. If Seantral wants to be a high pick, he needs to take advantage of his physical gifts and play like he can, not like he has.

CORAL GABLES —
In its first two games, Miami's offense hasn't exactly shown much of its playbook.
Against FAU in their opener nearly three weeks ago, the Hurricanes didn't have to do much more than put the ball in the hands of running back Duke Johnson and quarterback Stephen Morris. That was enough to help Miami pick up a 34-6 win.
The relatively basic showing led Morris to joke this week that he'd like to see the offense try out some of its other plays. But as quickly as he laughingly bemoaned wanting to try new things, the senior became serious.
That's because Morris understands that the 16th-ranked Hurricanes won't need any tricks when they face overmatched Savannah State on Saturday.
Instead, the game is one more opportunity for Miami to continue trying to fix some of the issues that appeared during Miami's 21-16 win over Florida when the Gators, ranked third in the nation in total defense, held the Hurricanes to just one third-down conversion and 50 total rushing yards.

— There's no question Miami is a big favorite this week against Savannah State.
The Tigers were an abysmal 1-10 last year. They opened this season with a pair of blowout losses to Georgia Southern and Troy during which they were outscored 143-12.
And in three games, Savannah State's entire offense has mustered a total of 52 rushing yards, while Hurricanes running back Duke Johnson has gained 245 yards on his own during two games.
With numbers like those, it'd be easy for Miami's coaches and players to take this week for granted.
But coming off a bye and with their ACC schedule looming, the 16th-ranked Hurricanes say they're trying to keep the focus on themselves and what they need to do to continue improving.

I have only seen a few of the RB prospects play in person. Yearby, Cooke and Powell are all very good but I like Yearby best as a pure runner and Powell as a scat back or slot receiver. Cooke is bigger and faster than Yearby and Powell, but I don't see him as being shifty or having as many moves as Yearby in tight spaces. I will make it a point to go see the other prospects over the next couple of weeks. The canes have a lot of good recruits coming.

SEATTLE WINS A TITLE!!!
Seahawks fans at CenturyLink Field proved they were the loudest in the world when they set the record for stadium noise Sunday night.
The noise was 131.9 decibels, passing the previous record of 131.76 by a soccer crowd in Istanbul.
It didn’t hold up for long. Midway through the third quarter, during a goal-line stand that stopped the 49ers, the noise reached 136.6 decibels.
Robertson, the Guinness judge, is more familiar with soccer, and said of the Hawks fans’ roar: “It’s a far louder, tribal kind of passion” and the sound is more continuous. “There’s passionate people in soccer, but here you see veins bulging out of necks.”
This sort of noise is slightly louder than a 747 taking off, fittingly for the Jet City.
Fan noise contributed to a 49ers delay-of-game penalty in the first quarter.
Ushers and security staff wore earplugs, as did some fans.
“We’ve got a new stadium coming in the next year. I’ve been in NASCAR infields, and this is ... nauseating. It’s great,” he said.

Good morning everybody.
VA Cane mentioned Jimi Hendrix on the last blog. Few know he played his last ever gig on the small German Isle of Fehmarn, 12 days prior to his death. Went there some years ago to see the memorial rock and pay tribute to the Master of the Fender Strat.
He even had a thing or two to say about the NCAA:
You're just like crosstown traffic
So hard to get through to you
Crosstown traffic
I don't need to run over you
Crosstown traffic
All you do is slow me down
And I got better things on the other side of town.
Go Canes!

Whats going on my people!!! Heres my thought on the Savannah st game...
Duke johnson shouldn't even play, and if he does give him 5 snaps and call it a day because those 5 snaps will probably mean 5tds
Lets just avoid injuries guys please!!!!!!!!

UpNorth..while I kinda agree, we have the get the offense in sync with each other, even if just for a quarter.
Posted by: UMike | September 19, 2013 at 09:32 AM
I think Edwards ends up with the most carries
Posted by: UMike | September 19, 2013 at 09:34 AM

This is true..Morris needs to work with the WR and TE's, but not to much lol..they can get more work in against USF. We could probably play the 3' the whole game lol

UM DC D'Onofrio on what he has seen from sophomore cornerback Tracy Howard…
“The biggest thing, and I’ve been saying this since last year, is that Tracy is a football guy. He really loves football and really works hard at the game. He studies the game. He’s one of those guys you can have a conversation with and, if you want to make a slight adjustment, he gets it on the first try. He gets it on the first try. You don’t have to sit with him for the next three days and talk him through it. He understands football – why we’re trying to do stuff, how to disguise coverages, how to disguise looks, those sorts of things. He’s very savvy. He has been our most consistent corner since the preseason.”

UM DC D'Onofrio on which defensive linemen have benefited from offseason strength and weight gain…
“I think all of them have done such a good job. [Anthony] Chickillo at 275 pounds has really helped him. He was 238 when he finished his freshman year. Curtis [Porter] has gone from 305 to 325. Olsen Pierre is up to 305. It has helped all those guys. I can’t really pick out one, but I certainly like the fact that Curtis is at 325 and [Justin] Renfrow behind him at 315 are playing nose tackle for us. That really helps to solidify the middle.”
