Miami Hurricanes junior Ladarius Gunter and sophomore Duke Johnson were named the ACC Defensive Back and Specialist of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday.
It was Gunter’s first ACC weekly award, while Johnson picked up his sixth honor and first Specialist of the Week designation. Johnson was a five-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree as a freshman in 2012.
Gunter and Johnson are the fifth and sixth Hurricane to earn ACC Player of the Week honors in 2013. OL Brandon Linder, LB Denzel Perryman, DL Anthony Chickillo and WR Stacy Coley all have been previously recognized by the conference as ACC players or co-players of the week.
Gunter recorded seven tackles, including one for a loss, and had a key interception return for a touchdown in Miami’s 45-30 win over Georgia Tech. Gunter’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown helped seal Miami’s ACC win over the Yellow Jackets and extended the Hurricanes’ win streak to seven games.
Gunter is the first Miami defensive back to return an interception for a TD since Ray-Ray Armstrong did so in 2010, and the first for any Miami player since Denzel Perryman’s 41-yard return in the 2012 season opener at Boston College. Gunter is one of three Hurricanes tied for the team lead with two interceptions.
Johnson finished with a game-high 325 all-purpose yards in Miami’s 45-30 win, his eighth career 200-yard game and second career 300-yard game. Johnson tallied 114 kick return yards on four tries and a game-high 184 rushing yards. Johnson leads the Hurricanes with 572 rushing yards on 84 carries (6.8 yards per rush) and 954 all-purpose yards.
No. 13/14 Miami (5-0, 1-0) is off this week but returns to the field Oct. 17 when the Hurricanes travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face the North Carolina Tar Heels (1-4, 0-2). Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
MIAMI'S ACC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK FOR 2013:
Sept. 3 Brandon Linder, Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week
Sept. 9 Denzel Perryman, Linebacker of the Week
Sept. 9 Anthony Chickillo, Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week
Sept. 30 Stacy Coley, Co-Rookie of the Week
Oct. 7 Ladarius Gunter, Defensive Back of the Week
Oct. 7 Duke Johnson, Specialist of the Week

Over the course of five Sundays this fall, the University of Miami men’s basketball team becomes heroes for 120 kids during Cane Nation, a once-in- a-lifetime experience providing boys in grades K-6 the unique opportunity to interact with Hurricane basketball players in a true basketball setting.
Cane Nation was started in Miami two years ago by Coach Jim Larrañaga, who wanted to give kids an opportunity to get excited about the Hurricanes, the players that are going to be their coaches and basketball in general.
“When I was a youngster, I loved following college basketball,” said Coach Larrañaga. “It was a real thrill for me to meet college players. They were my heroes. Cane Nation provides that for youth in the Miami area.”
Youth play basketball in the Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Miami from 4-6 p.m., but the interaction doesn’t end at 6 p.m. on Sunday. The UM players interact with the Cane Nation participants throughout the season, at games and in the community.
“It gives us an opportunity for the Miami players to coach these kids, who they look up to so much,” said Adam Fisher, director of operations for men’s basketball. “Coach L is great in giving back to the community.”

THANK YOU for creating an outstanding atmosphere at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday afternoon and for helping us earn a 45-30 victory over division rival Georgia Tech. We are now 5-0 on the season!
Coach Golden, in his postgame press conference, recited a leadership development concept that he shared with the team during the summer: "You don’t have any leadership until you have a bead of sweat and the crap hits the fan."
That was certainly the case on Saturday. But you rallied behind the team to help us fight back to a halftime tie and surge ahead in the 4th quarter (OUR QUARTER).
The roar from the crowd when Allen Hurns scored the go-ahead 69-yard touchdown late in the third quarter was deafening and produced one of the best photographs of the year: CLICK HERE. Seeing all of the fans, literally, ‘Standing with the U’ makes me proud to be a Miami Hurricane.
Thank you again for choosing to spend your Saturdays with us at Sun Life Stadium and for helping us create a home field advantage that inspires our players to victory. On behalf of Coach Golden and our entire program, we truly appreciate your support!

I have read/heard some whispers of him not sticking with Florida and I think the type of year Miami has could make an impact, but I still put the chance he flips at around 15% imo

From the last Blog excellent comments on Stephen Morris...From The Dude and SOUP...
We have elite talent, just not elite execution and that combination makes elite players. Stephen is a good candidate to make my point. His arm and size are ready for the highest level, The NFL. But commanding an offense is what seperates. This team will win every game when a commander plays QB. Dorsey wasn't elite in talent. But he was a commander. Morris has to want to feed the ball to his running machine. He has to want to call perfect passing and running schemes. He needs to be super involved. I say imagine this team with Dorsey. Imagine it with Peyton or Brady. Morris has more raw QB talent than any of them. But they don't make mistakes. If Morris takes his game to an elite level, not great, not very good, Miami is unbeatable. Morris, I think you can be that guy. Can you challange yourself to be elite?
I really think you can Stephen. Eliminate mental laspses during the game and see the whole field better and you will be elite for the rest of your college senior year and at the next level....

We haven't scored a load of points? And Morris has only played 2 full games, one them on a bad ankle. We have scored 34 (with first string out by half time), 21 against a top Florida D, 77 with everyone gone early, 49 with Morris playing a quarter and a half maybe and 45 (or 38) against GT with 4 turnovers and a bad ankle..so I am not sure where your argument is lol
Posted by: UMike | October 07, 2013 at 02:03 PM
From top to bottom, Dorsett, Waters, Hurns, Coley, Lewis etc etc I think is the best WR group in the nation. Jmo
Posted by: UMike | October 07, 2013 at 02:04 PM
If Morris is healthy and plays 4 quarters all year we would have broke UM offensive records already lol
Posted by: UMike | October 07, 2013 at 02:05 PM
We're averaging 45.2 points per game. LOL @ "not scoring a load of pts"

Ermon Lane being a Cane? I'll put it at 35% since I've heard some recent news that he's not comfortable with UF and is "being pushed away from Miami" by some people close to him.

GT had the ball 12 minutes longer than UM did during the game. TEWLVE MINUTES!
I think our defense is well conditioned by now, whadda U think?

From CIS and Rivals..
Treon Harris Rivals update
The one line i love is when he says he doesnt care about depth charts, just have to love that mentality out of any player
-has his heart set on being a QB, and he committed to Florida State to play that spot
-father says as of now Treon still has UM on the backburner
-"Based on right now with him not being able to play quarterback there he won't be considering Miami at this point because that's the whole idea (for him to be a QB)," "We feel he's getting better at the position, has gone through a lot of different obstacles and defenses week in and week out, being on the road, hostile environments and done well. Even now he has schools that had doubts that keep watching him play; more teams are now trying to come in and get him to take a visit at the quarterback position now when they weren't recruiting him for that at first."
*two brothers attended UM (Brandon excelled as a DB) and his father was an administrator at the school
-"Until you get that information from Miami (whether he'll be recruited as a QB) you never know," "Other teams felt the same way that (the Canes) felt at one point and now are coming in and saying `We like him at quarterback now.'
-"Until that call comes from Miami you can't speak on that. But you never know what might happen."
-still feels good on commitment to fla. state
- Barrow is in regular contact, but still based on if he'll play slot receiver
-Comfortable with Jimbo commitment in terms of he'll give him a legit opportunity at QB
* Treon will play WR or DB at the Army All-American game, "But he's going to college to be a QB for his future,"

From CIS and 247..
A little bit of Info on 24/7
- Lane may visit UM in January and has connections with Bama and UM (obviously)
- According to a contact Lane and Cook have high interest in playing at UM but "people are pushing them away" to play elsewhere
- Torrance Gibsons top 2 are UM and OSU with Um having a slight lead right now. He has a spring visit to OSU and with past success of Terrelle Pryor and Braxton Miller it intrigues him
- Jovon Durante has a brother who plays at FIU so when he committed to FIU it was to play with him and stay close. He's currently a WVU commit but has Bama and UM #2 and #3 and plans to visit LSU and Bama later this fall

Well Ermon Lane needs to tell the people around Him to STFU!, because Miami is trending up for WRs contributing as true freshman.
Waters...contributed as a TFM...PD4 contributed as a TFM...Coley is contributing as a TFM...And although not as a TFM because of injury, Scott contributed early...and if I'm not mistaken, Hurns contributed as a TFM. All in all, Miami has been hittin' pretty good on their WRs in recruiting. So BRING YO' ASS! to the U Lane!

NICE! The World Champ was IN THE BUILDIN'!
Mayweather was in town Saturday for the Miami Hurricanes football game, and Spoelstra reached out with an offer to attend practice. Few outsiders are allowed to watch Heat practice, according to Dwyane Wade, but Mayweather is a little different. He’s 45-0 over a 17-year career.

Soup, you are right on about PD4. I love him, but you have to put him in positions to be successful. I have to admit, that I have seen PD4 grow throughout the course of the first few games and he has the most straight-line speed of all the WRs, but PD4 lacks the lateral movement and quick feet that Coley, Waters, or even Hurns have.
Morris is learning his personnel, and Coley is putting them in position to be successful. For example - If you noticed on Hurns TD, Hurns and PD4 lined up on the left and there was an audible and they had Hurns and PD4 switch. Then, PD4 ran the deep route, and Hurns ran an out pattern. Morris threw the ball and the GT DB missed the tackle and Hurns then followed PD4 to the end zone. I liked that play because both WRs ran routes that suited their strong points.
The early part of the season was a feeling out period for the passing game, and it will only get better and better. Hurns (his first healthy season in a while) is becoming a #1 option for Morris, and Coley (my LOF) is becoming the most well-rounded, big play WR who consistently gets open.
The Canes and FSU have the best run-pass balance in the ACC, and the Canes have not opened up their full playbook yet. The Canes also have a slightly better defense than FSU or Clemson. If the Canes continue to grow and improve as the season progresses, don't rule out a legitimate shot at the BCS champtionship or a BCS bowl THIS YEAR.

I did not say PD4 was a scrub. He is the fastest player on the Canes team, and I like him. I am very pleased he is a Cane, and the Canes need him as much as any WR they have. But, when you compare him as a route-runner and PR to Coley, Waters and Hurns, he is #4 (no pun intended).
