I should let you know that out of respect to country music legend Willie Nelson I was going to title this blog article: "Mommas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Seminoles".
But that would be disrespectful to Willie and so I just couldn't do it.
But seriously what you may not realize is that if a high school athlete really cared about getting a college education (some obviously don't) and if they all knew what I knew about academics and Florida State University then they would have to admit that the blog title is 100% accurate and factually true.
Friend don't let friends go to Florida State.
In fact it could be argued that the words "academics" and "Florida State University" should never appear in the same sentence unless the word "failure" comes right before or after those words.
Now, all I am asking is for if for you to just give me a few minutes to prove it. I did all the research, I crunched all of the numbers and I have to say that what I found left me a little bit shocked at the actual findings and results.
Last year I looked at the NCAA Academic Progress Report Scores for the three major revenue producing men's college sports: football, basketball and baseball. If you are not familiar with the NCAA's APR it is an annual report that measures the year-to-year and four year aggregate academic performance of a university's athletic teams in all intercollegiate sports.
I went to the NCAA web site to research and compare FSU's APR scores in the three major sports with what are considered the four other major universities in Florida (Miami, Florida, Central Florida and South Florida) and all twelve of the Atlantic Coast Conference teams and what I found was basically this:
It was nearly impossible to find one single example in any sport that favored the Seminoles.
I guess if one thing can be said about FSU is that they are consistent. As in consistently bad. But don't take my word for it, just let the numbers and stats do the trash talking for me.
Football: The Seminoles and Jimbo Fisher, came in dead last in the State of Florida and 10th out of the 12 teams in the ACC.
- The ACC average APR score was 957.
- FSU missed that low water mark by 25 points with a score of 932
- That is just 2 points above the minimal NCAA score of 930.
- Duke led the conference in football with a 986 score.
- Miami came in second at 979. The 'Noles trailed Miami by 47 points.
- Even UF (976), UCF (971) and USF (952) scored higher than FSU.
Basketball: The Seminoles and former UM head coach Leonard Hamilton who apparently moved on to easier pickings should be ashamed. FSU did worse in roundball than in football in the APR rankings:
- The ACC average for basketball was 961.
- Miami came in well above that at 975.
- FSU scored a embarrassing 926,the 2nd lowest in the ACC (GT 915).
- Even UF (964), USF (937) and UCF (929) outscored the Seminoles.
Baseball: Finally we get to the Seminoles pride and their celebrated head coach Mike Martin. When you see the final results it is enough to make you choke on your mustard covered hot dog:
- The ACC average was 977.
- Miami came in third in the ACC and scored 989 (Duke, UVA).
- FSU came in at 938 and LAST in the ACC.
- UF scored 981 and UCF 980 both below Miami at 989.
These facts beg the question: Why would friends let friends go to FSU?
yes indeedY!

Can't believe this crap, just found out I had Seminole closet fan right under my nose at work! He has been there for years and all of a sudden he came out with Nole gear on! Well at the very least he is not a Gator fan. I would have had to let him go if he was! LOL

GO CANES!!!
Posted by: Carlos | October 30, 2013 at 09:06 PM
My inner self has been almost completely tranquil this season. I decided to accept two tenets:
1. Miami still isn't that good
2. Miami will win all its games
Now, generally speaking, the two tenets above are in some tension. But we can all point to teams that had serious issues, but triumphed nonetheless. Notre Dame managed to make it to the Big Game before being exposed. The last couple NY Giants teams to win Super Bowls were decidedly NOT impressive squads, but came up when they had to.
Once Miami is a good football team again, I'll start worrying about how they *should* be thrashing some lesser team. For now, I'm happy assuming that ugly wins are the karmic price UM must pay for, well, wins.

Three more days....three more days until Miami imposes supreme sanctions upon the FSU football team and their undefeated season.
MIAMI 34 FSU 17

Beer:
I'd have higher hopes if Terry Porter were working this game. Otherwise, I'll still look at this as a rebuilding year where higher hopes than should have been placed on this team kinda got placed. I hope we pull this sucker out, as I hate seeing the U lose, but I think we start getting to true top 5 levels consistently over the next 1-3 years. Just keep recruiting!

So as I was driving through Wachula, FL (Google it) which is officially located at the intersection of HWY 64 and HWY 17, but is actually listed in the dictionary as in the middle of nowhere, and on my way to Fort Myers I heard a song that had some lyrics that made me think first of the 12%ers and then the national media.

I was about to ask the other day where the Coach L-loving but Al-hating OGV went.

Soup I'm right there wit u. I know people not gon like this and I hate to say it but Golden has to take the blame for this too. This is his third year and we said before the season NO EXCUSES. Not saying he can't get it done but as of right now we should be better, true or false?
Posted by: WWIN | October 30, 2013 at 10:20 PM
LOL hell we are 7-0 I dont think we can be better than undefeated hahaha. Keep Calm and Cane On!

Tsully, by the hairs of our chinny chin chins LOL. I'm wit Soup I'm tired of worrying over playing teams like unc and wake. I'm tired of being on edge every time our qb drops back since Dorsey left.

THIS!!!! I want to see a good football game with NO injuries
Posted by: CGNC | October 30, 2013 at 10:34 PM
WWiN, the answer is yes. Especially as far as efficiency is concerned. 3rd downs are an issue. Redzone is an issue. Also I've questioned some moves like Duke as a goal line back, don't get me wrong, Duke runs angry, but can't move a pile and quite frankly its too risky to use him that way as far as injuries go. We need a healthy Duke. I think Stephen's performance is on Coley. Not sure if he didn't want to rock the boat with him?
For the most part though Al has done so much already that gives him the benefit of the doubt. I always say, in CF, the 5 year plan is dead. Its a 3 year plan now. Al has earned a 4th and 5th year so far to see where he can take us. He's never built an elite team before and to his credit, he's said a million times Miami is not back. He will tell you Miami is an elite brand, but not an elite team. He knows there is a higher level. I will add this too: His player development has been really good. Every year the players are better than the previous year. I don't think we've seen Al Goldens ceiling yet.
Posted by: The Dude | October 30, 2013 at 10:34 PM
WWIN: If at the end of last season had someone told you we would be 7-0, ranked 7th headed into Doak, you would have taken it - right?
Posted by: CGNC | October 30, 2013 at 10:38 PM
Hey WWiN, you know who Al reminds me of more and more? Pete Carroll. Seriously, their personalities are very similar. It took Pete a couple of years also. In fairness, Pete had more to work with at the get go, no sanctions, UCLA isn't FSU or Florida.
Posted by: The Dude | October 30, 2013 at 10:38 PM
I don't think we've seen Coley's ceiling either. We will see this Saturday if D'Onofrio is a BIGTIME DC, or just Al Golden's BFF. Being young isn't an excuse in Div 1 football anymore. He better bring pressure on Winston or its gonna be a blow out.

Hahaha. That would be cool. I could see OGV Spearing Jimbo like Goldberg lol! Go Canes Beat the Hell outta the Noles!
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | October 30, 2013 at 10:47 PM
Coley will be a BIGTIME OC one day. He is a freak recruiter, tireless worker and learned from one of the best offensive minds in CF. Jimbo didn't want to lose him for a reason, he's gonna be a good one and Jimbo knows it.
Not sure about D'Onofrio. I don't see it. If he had really really really good players maybe. I like some of what he does, HATE other things. I'm not sure if the D really rallies around him either. I think the D responds to Al.
Posted by: The Dude | October 30, 2013 at 10:47 PM
Wow, tough crowd! 7-0 and still not happy with the coach. May I remind you that he also brought in Fisch who was so good the NFL snagged him?...ok,ok I know u guys want to see number 6, but really?

Don't let your inner OBV get to you!
Posted by: CalgaryCane | October 30, 2013 at 10:58 PM
Morris and his ankle... this is the worst excuse in Canedom right now. Morris has never been super accurate and he didn't improve over last year in this regard. His ints have been boneheaded decissions, not injury induced. Please stop with his ankle being a factor. If it really were, Williams would be starting. Its only an excuse for his sh*tty performance thus far.
Posted by: The Dude | October 30, 2013 at 11:04 PM
Calgary, don't bury your head in the sand because we are 7-0. This team is better than they have performed in too many games.

My wife's best friend/cousin went to FSU and was on their swim team around 2004. When I met her she told me because my wife had mentioned how I was a HUGE UM fan and I said "Why would U do that to yourself? That place is a $#ithole!"
She doesn't like me now... Can't figure out why

Don't disagree. That's why I am hopeful for a win. Strongly believe that if the D brings their A game and we keep it close, we will see our team running down FSU.

I wish people would read my post carefully. I never said we should get rid of Golden, I just said at the moment he's not getting it done which is very fair IMO. I didn't say I don't believe in him. I just don't like some of the things he's doing.
For example, he said to start judging him the moment he stepped on campus and I said no I'll wait till year three, so that brings me to this moment. He keeps saying we not there and we're building, sounds like wiggle room to me, so if we play bad he got something to fall back on even tho his motto is no excuses. Before the season people wuz saying if the defense wuz jus a little bit improved this year we would be unstoppable, that happened...
Once again, I like Golden but its time for him to step up his coaching
