dj moonbat

My inner self has been almost completely tranquil this season. I decided to accept two tenets:

1. Miami still isn't that good
2. Miami will win all its games

Now, generally speaking, the two tenets above are in some tension. But we can all point to teams that had serious issues, but triumphed nonetheless. Notre Dame managed to make it to the Big Game before being exposed. The last couple NY Giants teams to win Super Bowls were decidedly NOT impressive squads, but came up when they had to.

Once Miami is a good football team again, I'll start worrying about how they *should* be thrashing some lesser team. For now, I'm happy assuming that ugly wins are the karmic price UM must pay for, well, wins.

TonyCane

Three more days....three more days until Miami imposes supreme sanctions upon the FSU football team and their undefeated season.

THIS!!!! I want to see a good football game with NO injuries

The Dude

WWiN, the answer is yes. Especially as far as efficiency is concerned. 3rd downs are an issue. Redzone is an issue. Also I've questioned some moves like Duke as a goal line back, don't get me wrong, Duke runs angry, but can't move a pile and quite frankly its too risky to use him that way as far as injuries go. We need a healthy Duke. I think Stephen's performance is on Coley. Not sure if he didn't want to rock the boat with him?

For the most part though Al has done so much already that gives him the benefit of the doubt. I always say, in CF, the 5 year plan is dead. Its a 3 year plan now. Al has earned a 4th and 5th year so far to see where he can take us. He's never built an elite team before and to his credit, he's said a million times Miami is not back. He will tell you Miami is an elite brand, but not an elite team. He knows there is a higher level. I will add this too: His player development has been really good. Every year the players are better than the previous year. I don't think we've seen Al Goldens ceiling yet.

CGNC

WWIN: If at the end of last season had someone told you we would be 7-0, ranked 7th headed into Doak, you would have taken it - right?

The Dude

Hey WWiN, you know who Al reminds me of more and more? Pete Carroll. Seriously, their personalities are very similar. It took Pete a couple of years also. In fairness, Pete had more to work with at the get go, no sanctions, UCLA isn't FSU or Florida.

The Dude

I don't think we've seen Coley's ceiling either. We will see this Saturday if D'Onofrio is a BIGTIME DC, or just Al Golden's BFF. Being young isn't an excuse in Div 1 football anymore. He better bring pressure on Winston or its gonna be a blow out.

SOUP

I was about to ask the other day where the Coach L-loving but Al-hating OGV went.

Hahaha. That would be cool. I could see OGV Spearing Jimbo like Goldberg lol! Go Canes Beat the Hell outta the Noles!

The Dude

Coley will be a BIGTIME OC one day. He is a freak recruiter, tireless worker and learned from one of the best offensive minds in CF. Jimbo didn't want to lose him for a reason, he's gonna be a good one and Jimbo knows it.

Not sure about D'Onofrio. I don't see it. If he had really really really good players maybe. I like some of what he does, HATE other things. I'm not sure if the D really rallies around him either. I think the D responds to Al.

CalgaryCane

CalgaryCane

The Dude

Morris and his ankle... this is the worst excuse in Canedom right now. Morris has never been super accurate and he didn't improve over last year in this regard. His ints have been boneheaded decissions, not injury induced. Please stop with his ankle being a factor. If it really were, Williams would be starting. Its only an excuse for his sh*tty performance thus far.

The Dude

Calgary, don't bury your head in the sand because we are 7-0. This team is better than they have performed in too many games.

WWIN

I wish people would read my post carefully. I never said we should get rid of Golden, I just said at the moment he's not getting it done which is very fair IMO. I didn't say I don't believe in him. I just don't like some of the things he's doing.

For example, he said to start judging him the moment he stepped on campus and I said no I'll wait till year three, so that brings me to this moment. He keeps saying we not there and we're building, sounds like wiggle room to me, so if we play bad he got something to fall back on even tho his motto is no excuses. Before the season people wuz saying if the defense wuz jus a little bit improved this year we would be unstoppable, that happened...

Once again, I like Golden but its time for him to step up his coaching

WWiN, Golden has pretty much said what you have. He knows it man. That's why I give him a pass. Nevermind the W&L and the points scored for a sec. Look at the work ethic. Look at the bunker mentality. Look at UTough. Look at Recruiting. Look big picture. Al Golden gets it. What you are saying to Al, Al says with a smile and a wink back at you "I know, I got you." It hasn't all come together yet on the field, but it will. We all gotta enjoy the ride more often. We put ourselves right where we wanted to be.

If we lose, we drop no lower than 17. Which goes to show you how important it is to just stay unbeaten. We have now have a giant sized parachute. We take care of business and start climbing that ladder again. Next years team will be really good. Hopefully some Juniors come back from the D. Let's face it, we are having a really good season and the future is bright. Yes these games are tough to watch right now, but Al has us back in games that matter.

I think Morris ankle injury is a legit excuse or at the very least a good reason for his performance. I think every one he needed to improve his short game, but when was he ever a turnover prone QB? IMO, it came after the injury. Morris was never a qb in the mold of Berlin or Harris where you didn't know to be happy or scared when they released the ball lol...just look at some of those throws where he is leaning back rather then stepping into it. There is a reason the majority of his missed passes have been high.

I do worry that Coley isn't the greatest QB coach, but the reports that Morris was working his mechanics, specifically planting on that ankle was refreshing.

Either way Im happy we are 7-0, even if we aren't as good as the rest of the top 10..who cares!! lol Recruits see your name in lights, they see that little number next to your name, it will help us be ranked in the preseason polls next year etc etc etc. I dont care if we win by 1/2 a point, 7-0 with national buzz is a good thing no matter how you got there lol...anyone remember that OSU team in 2002 that squeaked by every game and had no business playing the mighty Canes?

UMike

### Al Golden said he isn’t using the fact Miami is a 22-point underdog to FSU as motivation for his players. Why? “I don’t want to use a point spread now, and then when we’re favored, we don’t use it.”

But Kirk Herbstreit, who is working the game for ABC with Brent Musburger, believes Golden should be making an issue of the fact that “nobody thinks we’ve got a chance” in order to get his players “really angry.”

### Biggest UM lineup surprise of the past two weeks? Tyrone Cornelius beating out Thurston Armbrister and Alex Figueroa for a starting linebacker job. “Cornelius has always been very gifted in his acceleration, pass defense, but now he’s a more complete player,” Golden said.

### FSU coach Jimbo Fisher, asked what Duke Johnson does well: “What doesn’t he do well? We would have a shorter conversation.”

### UM oral commitment Brad Kaaya moved into ESPN’s top 150 (at 128) and is on a roll: He completed 10 of 13 passes for 377 yards and four TDs last week and now has 14 TDs and three picks this season. UM’s other QB oral commitment, Malik Rosier, has 12 touchdowns through the air (compared with four picks) and also has run for 16 touchdowns.

Lost in Stephen Morris’ four-interception night two weeks ago at North Carolina was the fact that he leaped four spots to become Miami’s fourth most prolific career passer.

Down went Vinny Testaverde, Craig Erickson, Ryan Clement and Bernie Kosar.

Up soared Morris, a senior who is 1,362 yards from rising ahead of No. 3 UM career-passer Gino Torretta with at least six games left — including the biggest in his career against third-ranked Florida State (7-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) at 8 p.m. Saturday in Tallahassee.

Torretta was asked this week: Did you realize Morris could pass you?

“I’m not really sure,” said the 1992 Heisman Trophy winner, laughing. “But I know I don’t have any eligibility left to increase my yardage.”

Be assured that all Morris cares about now is the enormous challenge he will face against the nation’s No. 4 scoring defense (13 points per game allowed) and top secondary in passing yards allowed (153.7 per game).

The No. 7 Hurricanes (7-0, 3-0) haven’t beaten FSU since Jacory Harris threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns (with two interceptions) at Doak Campbell Stadium to start the 2009 season with a 38-34 victory. Morris was a senior at Miami Monsignor Pace that year.

“All the seniors know how important this game is,” said Morris, who was 25 of 43 for 223 yards and a touchdown (one interception) last season in UM’s 33-20 home loss to FSU. “You expect to win, but you also understand you’re playing another great team.”

Morris, who has 6,329 career yards (Ken Dorsey is No. 1 with 9,565), has struggled since sustaining a right-ankle injury Sept. 21 against Savannah State.

He exacerbated it in subsequent weeks, causing him to miss practice time and change his mechanics to compensate for being unable to put pressure on the ankle.

“Your body is going to respond to every injury a little different,” Morris said last Saturday. “It took me a while to get used to my ankle. It’s getting stronger.”

Coach Al Golden said Tuesday that Morris was “markedly better” and returning to his old cheerful self. By Wednesday afternoon, Golden said Morris “looks great. I think he’ll be able to close this chapter, go out, have fun, play the game he wants to play.”

Morris’ shorter and intermediate passes have been noticeably rising over his targets and landing deep, while some of his deeper passes — such as his 35-yard touchdown pass to Herb Waters last weekend — appear crisp and more accurate.

“When you’re throwing, it’s all about balance,” offensive coordinator James Coley said. “And when you have a bad wheel, sometimes you don’t have balance. So you rely on either one leg more or you rely on catching your balance when you’re leaning back. That’s when balls sail on you. When you complicate things with the pass rush, now you’re throwing multiples in there.

“He’s so talented with his hands that he has the ability to flick it. When you’re throwing intermediate or shorter passes you’re … driving it,” and “you need to transition your weight.”

It has been a while, but ESPN College “GameDay” will return to the site of a Miami game for the first time since Sept. 6, 2008, when “GameDay” set up shop in Gainesville for the eventual 26-3 Gators victory.

This will be the seventh time in the Miami-Florida State series history that “GameDay” is present.

The Atlantic Coast Conference showdown will kick off at 8 p.m. on ABC and will feature Brent Musburger (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst) and Heather Cox (sideline reporter) on the broadcast. “GameDay” will originate from the FSU campus from 9 a.m. to noon. The show is hosted by Chris Fowler and includes analysts Lee Corso, Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, David Pollack and Samantha Ponder.

It will mark Miami’s 18th appearance as either visiting or home team on the show. UM is 12-5 all-time on “GameDay.”

The last time UM won with the “GameDay” crew on site was on Nov. 5, 2005, when the No. 5 Canes defeated No. 3 Virginia Tech 27-7 in Blacksburg, Va.

- FSU is having a strong season. He likes the coaching staff and he'd have an easy opportunity to play there. They're on top because he can go, play early and stay close to home

- UM is the closest Florida school. They put a lot of players in the NFL. He went to the GT game and talked to Paul Williams, he likes the offense and the tempo they use

- UF play in the SEC against "the best" and he has friends in Quincy Wilson and Chris Lammons going there

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA adopted five new rules for football, dealing with recruiting and coaches' access to players during the summer.

The Division I Board of Directors on Wednesday said in a news release the rules are effective immediately.

The new rules include:

• Allowing football players to participate in eight hours per week of required weight training and conditioning. Up to two of the eight hours can consist of film review.

• Prohibiting school staff members from attending all-star games or activities associated with those games.

• Establishing an extended dead period when no in-person recruiting can take place in December and January. For 2013-14, Dec. 16 through Jan. 15 is now a dead period.

• Establishing a 14-day dead period in late June and early July for FBS schools.

• Allowing schools to pay for meals for up to four family members who accompany a recruit on an official visit.

In other business, the board asked the Leadership Council to study whether heavy reliance on online courses is appropriate for student-athletes.

UMike

COASTAL DIVISION
Miami is the only team unbeaten in conference play in the division at 3-0, so the Hurricanes are in control. Even if Miami loses to Florida State, the Canes would make the ACC title game if they win their remaining conference games.

Virginia Tech is next, with one conference loss (3-1). The Hokies go to the ACC title game if they win out. Indeed, the Coastal might very well be decided next weekend in Miami when the Canes and Hokies play.

Georgia Tech, Duke and Pitt each have two conference losses. Of the three, Duke has the least convoluted scenario to get into the ACC title game. Duke needs to win out -- that means a victory over Miami -- and then have Virginia Tech and the Canes finish with at least two conference losses. If Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech finish in a three-way tie with two conference losses apiece, Duke goes because it has the head-to-head wins over the Canes and Hokies. Pitt already lost to Virginia Tech and has Miami to close the regular season, so the Panthers are still alive but need to win out and then get some help. Georgia Tech is at the biggest disadvantage of the three because it lost head-to-head against Miami and Virginia Tech.

UMike

The routine task of breaking down game film of an opponent was “different” this week for Miami offensive coordinator James Coley.

As Coley studied No. 3-ranked Florida State’s defense in preparation for what is arguably the biggest game on the Hurricanes’ schedule, Coley caught himself thinking about the days he recruited so many of those players as an assistant on the Seminoles’ staff.

“It’s different from when you watch other teams,” said Coley, a 1997 graduate of Florida State. “You know the history behind every player. Some of the guys as seniors, you remember them as freshmen, or guys that I recruited, like Lamarcus Joyner, you watch him and at the same time there’s a thought process of, ‘Ok, what does he do well?’ and then in the back of my mind it goes back to, ‘Oh, man, I remember recruiting this kid.’ There’s a pride factor. I’m happy for them.”

(He’d also like to win on Saturday – nothing personal.)

With the exception of the relationships he built with his former players, Coley said there hasn’t been any time this week to get emotional about returning to his alma mater, where he coached for five years before being hired by Al Golden as the rival Canes’ offensive coordinator. Two of the biggest selling points in leaving Florida State were the opportunity to call plays, which he didn’t do for the Noles in three seasons as the offensive coordinator, and returning to his hometown of Miami, where he grew up near the Orange Bowl cheering for the Canes.

“I think it’s all business,” Miami quarterback Stephen Morris said. “When you get to this point, you understanding coaching at this level is business. Coach Coley saw a great opportunity to come down here, call his plays and do everything he wanted to do as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and he took it. Coach Golden did a great job of finding him.”

You know, in honor of hate week, I wish I could bring myself to hate this Winston dude, what with him being so dangerous to Miami's interests.

But the guy seems like a genuinely cool dude, who was apparently led astray at some point in his life and became a Seminole. Maybe some degenerate uncle did it.

Baylor: Art Briles and the Bears are challenging our notions about the limits of a college football offense by putting up wacky numbers in Waco. Baylor is averaging 718 yards and 63.9 points per game, both of which are well above the all-time FBS records. Briles' offense utilizes space better than the movie "Gravity" and does so at the speed of light, with 44 touchdown drives of two minutes or fewer this season.

UMIKE,

Art Briles' 1998 Stephenville HS (TX) team still holds the National Record for yards in a season- 8664. He's been doing it a long time.

Interesting note- his QB from that team is the QB Coach at Palmetto, HS in Bradenton, Kelan Luker.

Sarasota 'cane

You better be "First" on Saturday UpNorth!!

Wow...

Thats great and all until U notice every team that they have played has a losing record. peeps can talk all the ish they want at least Miami has played Florida even with all their injuries 4-3, GT is 5-2, Wake is 4-4. Both Wake and Florida defenses are in the top 2 in scoring defense. Lets see Baylor's numbers after the next few weeks. IJS.

Terrance Sullivan

I meant to say top 20 in scoring defense.

UMike

UMike

UpNorth, he actually didn't say that lol..

“It’s a brotherly game. Miami is obviously down South. It’s a big rivalry. It’s just like we’re going to be in the back yard, playing against each other. We want to beat our brother and if they want to be the big brother, we want to be the little brother, it’s still a friendly competition. It’s going to be a battle.”

I kinda like the kid..he is a bit of fresh air from the douch Johnny Fairyball lol

Willie,
I don't Golden is blowing smoke up any ways rear end when he stakes we are not there yet, that is the truth. Wiggle room or not it's a fact. We all watch week after week and we can see what we lack. I think we are at least 3 or 4 players short on the defensive side of the ball. Our QB's need to be more consistent and we need a bigger back on offense to compliment Duke & Crawford. We are close but it's going to take at least 5 years.
Who would of thought My Bo Sox would win the World Series and nothing would make this week greater than to go out and do what everybody expects us not to do and that's to bust up in those sugar plums up North.
While we are haten this week, The Herb's top 5:
Notre Dame
FSU
Florida
OSU
Texas

UMike

herb..are you saying 5 years from now..or do you mean in Golden's 5th year?
