If you think what is bring said on the blog is negative or bad you should have been at the game on Saturday or listening to sports talk radio (WQAM) on Sunday. Multiply this X 10.

I'll say one more thing too albiet a bit controversial... I don't think these kids from S. Florida are as good as they once were.

Posted by: THE MAN | November 11, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Nah, they're just being recruited by a lot more places than they used to. Back in the day, there was no way a S. Fl. kid would end up playing in Louisiana, or Texas, or Alabama.

SOUP

I still say give it five years until we will REALLY know if this is gonna work. But the blind faith and pure confidence in this coaching staff is now gone and the questioning period STARTS NOW!

To me here is the bottom line:

1. Finish strong at 10-2 and we will all shut up and be perfectly happy with our bowl game in Miami (I know, I know, BUT it is still possible), Orlando or Tampa.

2. Lose another game to a team we "should" beat (not even sure who those teams are anymore?) and there will be no holding back the sharks with that much blood in the water.

And I am NOT just sayin...

SOUP

Derek Jones joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in January of 2008 and coaches the defensive backs. Jones also assists Zac Roper with Duke’s special teams units.

Under the guidance of Jones, Duke’s Ross Cockrell has emerged as one of the top cornerbacks in the nation. In 2012, Cockrell earned first team All-ACC and honorable mention All-America honors after posting 71 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, five interceptions and 13 pass breakups. The five interceptions were tops in the conference.

In addition to Cockrell, safety Walt Canty also garnered All-ACC accolades in 2012, receiving a second team citation. Canty paced the Blue Devils in tackles with 109 while closing an outstanding 49-game career that included 262 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups and five caused fumbles.

In 2011, safety Matt Daniels — who signed with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams in the spring 2012 — was a first team All-ACC and second team All-America pick after registering 126 tackles.

Cockrell earned Freshman All-America accolades in 2010 after leading the Blue Devils with three interceptions while ranking second among ACC rookies in total passes defended (10). Also, five different defensive backs registered interceptions for the Blue Devils last season, and Daniels ranked among the conference leaders in both tackles per game (6th; 7.8) and caused fumbles (2nd; 0.25).

One of Jones’ pupils, Leon Wright, concluded an outstanding career in 2009 by earning honorable mention All-ACC honors after totaling 58 tackles, five interceptions and eight pass breakups. Wright was instrumental in Duke’s 35-19 come-from-behind win at Army in week two of the 2009 season, returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and signed a free agent contract with the NFL’s New York Giants in the spring of 2010.

Another cornerback under Jones’ guidance, Chris Rwabukamba, was a fourth round draft selection of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 2010 Canadian Football League Draft.

In 2008, the Blue Devil defense allowed 23.4 points per game – the lowest total in 20 seasons – and held three opponents to less than 10 points for the first time since 1976.

Prior to joining the Duke staff, Jones helped Memphis to a 7-6 overall record in 2007 – a five-game improvement in the win column from the previous year – with a berth in the New Orleans Bowl. One of Jones’ pupils, LaKeitharun Ford, was named co-MVP of the squad after posting 45 tackles and two interceptions.

In 2006, Jones coached the cornerbacks at Tulsa as the Hurricane defense ranked first in Conference USA in pass defense and total defense. Tulsa posted an 8-5 ledger that season and participated in the Armed Forces Bowl. Cornerback Nick Graham earned all-conference honors and is a current member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Again, I will have to respectfully disagree. Those teams from Ala, Lou and Texas are playing at a high level with very few S. Fla kids sprinkled in. The times have changed I think. Athletes are EVERYWHERE now. What we need are SMART and HUNGRY players which we currently have very few or none. I don't give a flying flip how fast a guy can run. I he drops the ball or is constently out of position that speed is worthless. Give me ball players who know the game and understand angles and what is going on and I will take that guy all day.

Texascane

From Mike Bakas@Scout.com

"The one thing I've noticed about this team, especially in this game, is how little excitement they seem to show on the football field -- especially on defense. It almost seems like the mentality is just don't make mistakes. I heard Mark D'Onofio before the game talk about how his defense wore down against FSU in the second half. He said a lot of it was because they were using the same regular guys in the second half of that game because "some younger guys made some mistakes early on in that game" and basically were removed from the rotation because of it. That's bothersome. Say what you want about Mark D'Onofrio and his schemes. Say what you want about the players in it. The thing that probably worries me most is it looks like his entire defensive unit is playing and just trying not to make mistakes. Maybe that's the new brand of Miami football -- it's just frustrating because we're seeing the product of what's being put on the field."

Big Al needs to have the courage to admit that sticking doggedly with the same approach will not suffice. The problems with this team won't just go away if we keep doing what we've been doing for a few more months, or a few more years.

It's easy to stay confident if you're too stupid to realize you might be wrong. Hopefully Al has the intellectual honesty to change course.

USAFCane

The D is a shambles, I remember 1 year in the last decade when we could get to the QB, can't remeber the d-line coach but he wasn't here long and it wasn't Hurtt.

Just want to see the d-line of old when they were unstopable.

It isn't over reaction, it is a fact. ANy team with a semi decent QB is going to cause big problems.

South Florida kids are better than ever, next excuse! What high school team is ranked #1 in the country? Where are they located?

Real question. If Sabin was coaching this same EXACT team do you think we would have the same results???????

THE MAN

Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 11, 2013 at 01:15 PM

Not an excuse, but an observation. I don't care where the #1 high school team is located. That is not the discussion. It's where the Miami team is getting their players from. It's definitely coaching too, I'm not disputing that at all, but you have to look at the make up of the players Miami is getting. All I'm going is the product on the field and what I see compared to other teams, period. Miami plays with ZERO emotion and that is not coaching at all, but more their internal makeup. I don't care what scheme you run, but if you don't want to knock the crap out of the guy with the ball or go get the ball when it's in the air then you shouldn't be playing football and that's what I see...

thirstybuzzardcane

My guess is that we will be playing UCF in a bowl game, in Orlando. My guess is that they would be a sellout too!

CGNC

Canesteeler - LOL. I know. I reached that point in 2009. Every year before that I was flying here and there ($1,000 a pop) with my daughter to see crappy football. And then when the team would come up here driving 3+ hours to sit in cold, sometimes freezing rain to watch missed tackles. So I did not renew my Hurricane Club membership, and haven't been to a game since the bowl loss to Wisky. I love the canes and watch every game, but when you have little free time and money, you watch where you spend it.

thirstybuzzardcane

Is it me or does Coley/Morris not know what the middle of the field is? We never ever see quick slants or crossing routes in the middle of the field.....In the past, our TE were famous for that, man I miss the days of Shockey, Winslow, Olsen, Ect.!!!

thirstybuzzardcane

Defense side of the ball we need to play press man and blitz the shyt out of the QB. Who cares if we give up a big play here and there, when the QB has time to throw he will tear any team up. This soft zone shyt has to stop!!!!

thirstybuzzardcane

I'm really getting tired of our predictable offense. Do we ever throw it on first down? And I am also getting sick of all these TE drag plays where we lose 4 yards on the play! After watching this team, I need a drink to calm my nerves down!!!!

You didn't answer my question, what would Sabin do with this same team?

The team takes on the persona of its coach, and Golden is as SOFT as they come!

What proof do you have of this other than our players?????

THE MAN

Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 11, 2013 at 01:53 PM

That's an impossible question to answer. Like I said, from what I see these players play with no killer instinct or emotion and that is not something that is coachable. You either come to play and play hard or you don't and that has nothing to do with coaching. The ALA defense looks like animals out there. Do you really think that got that way from Saban? They most likely have been that way from pee wee. They are hungry and want to kill the ball carrier. Coker was "soft" too and he won a national championship becuase he had animals out there who played with passion and confidence, although with insanely awesome talent, but if your theory is correct then that team wouldn't have won anything. Just something to think about. Not saying you aren't right, but just somethin to talk about...

VA Cane

I could say a million things, but from my reading they have been said already. That was bad football all around. VT is not super talented, but they executed the fundamentals. Heck even on the kicks they tackled and recovered the ball. We simply did not execute, and the overall game plan did not look too good. That was bad football.

We need to learn from the mistakes and get ready for Duke. Focus on the task at hand, and while doing that focus on the fundamentals we fail to consistently fail to execute...like block and tackle. JMO

CGNC

I don't think the admin allows the recruitment of "animals". IJS

VA Cane

WWIN,

I see it in my guys they are determined, aggressive, smart, want to win, hate losing, and have a passion for this game.

I do not or cannot coach those things BUT.....I can bring them out and magnify them. That is coaching. JMO

WWIN

^^^^^^^
Thanks for proving my point in all aspects! Lol

Sabin is satin and doesn't give a damn about ANYBODY, his team doesn't neither.

Butch Davis would try to kill anybody that lines up OPPOSITE of us, his team felt the same way

Larry Coker won with BUTCH DAVIS' team, what happened when Butch's players left? Did his team's still play like animals?

Now to Golden, name ONE Golden team that you seen play like animals? This is the same man that APOLOGIZED to a coach before the game. You do know why TH3 didn't get to play that much last year right? Bcuz he wanted to play aggressive and didn't believe in that soft BS D'no and Golden waa selling him.

THE MAN

I will definitely have to disagree with you about TH3. He is one of the main culprits of not laying the wood. He may miss the most tackles of anyone out there. I don't care if he can cover if it's man to man, but if his assignment is to come up and make a tackle, then he is failing at that because he has proven he can't do it very well. Really the whole secondary is guilty of this though...

WWIN

VA, you right, the same with my boys.

If you called a conservative game plan every game and played a SOFT zone constantly, how would you think that would affect them.

Why do they have signs that say DO NOT FEED THE BEARS? Bcuz they won't be able to hunt for their food like they use to. They start hunting for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead of salmon.

WWIN

Posted by: THE MAN | November 11, 2013 at 02:22 PM

The secondary is sent to the endzone on the snap of the ball, so how can he make tackles?????

WWIN

I'm bout to email OBV right now to end all this nonsense

THE MAN

Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 11, 2013 at 02:25 PM

Hahahahahaha! You are right about that, but my point is that's it's both parties at fault here (players and coaches). It's always skewed too heavily to one side all the time, but both have plenty of blame right now. The scheme def is terrible, but the players aren't helping out right now except for Perryman. He is the only animal out there right now.

canezilla

FREE OGV!!!

VA Cane

Yes there is an aggression that has to be delivered from the coaches and the game plan to the players. You work hard each week to get them ready to play on game day. Part of it is motivating, doing things that drive them, pump them up, encourage them.....and then they must react to the stimuli. We seemed to have had that earlier and it looked to be growing, but I do not see it now. Each player and coach has to find it in themselves and respond to the enthusiasm drive grit and determination of others....pretty soon everybody is ready to seek and destroy.

from what i see on Manny's twitter posts AG today says we're not back yet...still need players, no big depth changes, keep moving forward etc

My read, lowering expectations, but not necessarily wrong.

Losing is one thing, losing badly is another.

Question is how long will the fans wait..

WWIN

The man, are you blaming the bears or the humans?

VA Cane

UM 23 or 24 in the polls......after the debacle Sat I think they are about right. We need to focus on Duke, get things in perspective. Get the fundamentals right.

We are a 3 point favorite against Duke. Surprised honestly thought Duke would be a 10 point favorite. Go Canes! Beat Duke!
