This is it.
The time has finally arrived.
Al Golden has reached his moment of truth.
All of the cute little slogans, and promises, and interviews come down to this:
The current head coach of the Miami Hurricanes faces his first MUST win game. Al Golden must find a way to beat Virginia Tech to have the possibility of reaching the ACC title game for the first time since UM joined the ACC.
Failure, or losing, to most Miami Hurricane fans is simply not an option today at home as it was last week on the road against highly ranked FSU.
The Miami Hurricanes under head coach Al Golden MUST win this game.
Anything less would be totally unacceptable.
CANESPACE PREDICTION: CANES 34 - VT 20
What really concerns me though, is watching those Raising Canes and dudes are studying the playbook as they're getting ready for the game. Someone isn't ready?
Who's backup? Some raise they're hands. See, that's a problem. Never have the mentality of a backup. ;-)

Thanks for proving my point. 3 top 20 classes out of 4 years. 1 top 15 & 1 top 10. So what are you saying? Lmao

Yes, I know the difference between all those theres and theyres and theirs. Lol

Raising Canes is semi-scripted I would think
Posted by: CGNC | November 10, 2013 at 09:11 AM
I appreciate ur optimism 360 but there is absolutely NO WAY anyone can justify / sugarcoat Miami's lackluster play so far this season. We do have 7 victories but that's because we beat 7 extremely
crappy teams. There is no excuse 4 having to come from behind to beat a Wake team that was shut out by Syracuse! No way Syracuse has better talent than UM, therefore it has to be coaching. I honestly believe that Golden has lost this team. Each week Golden is starting 2 look more & more like a Caucasian version of Shannon. No emotion, no spunk, no desire to inspire. If being found NOT GUILTY by the NCAA ain't enuff to motivate this team.....
Posted by: 4-Real | November 10, 2013 at 09:12 AM
Co, well, the average of that is 20 maybe would equal a 20th ranked team. 10-2 or 9-3. Seems about right.
I had 8-4 to UF, UNC, FSU and VT. 2-2 not bad.
Posted by: 360Cane | November 10, 2013 at 09:13 AM
I just think the outcome of that game hung heavily on the fumbles and kneeled punt. 4 fumbles last night and VT covers them all??!! Man, that made me sick to see that fumble to TD for VT.
Posted by: 360Cane | November 10, 2013 at 09:18 AM
Hey CGNC! Man, everyone gets up early after a loss. LOL
Not saying anyone is wrong, but also believe many are over-thinking last night. We started with a huge amount of intensity & momentum. Scored on big play & D stuffed their O. Huge punt return but fumble at end of run. Huge KO return after their TD, but another lost fumble. When we turned e ball over on a kneel-down, that made 3 huge momentum killers in a row. We're not good enough to overcome that crap. 90% of games, either college or pro, once a team gets up by 3 scores it is game over.
Fix the missed tackles, fumbles & dropped TD passes = fix the team.
Posted by: DallasTX Cane | November 10, 2013 at 09:24 AM
There were lots of times when the defensive play call was bad. There were also times when the call was good, and the players blew it. The 'Canes were willing to do what it took.
I don't think Miami's foot speed on defense is particularly slow, except on the line (those guys are running in molasses). But their reaction time is AWFUL. When they see a change in front of them that requires action, they just stand there and watch while the offensive player changes direction and runs past them. So many times, I just wanted to shout at our defenders "Just GET him! He's right there!"
Posted by: dj moonbat | November 10, 2013 at 09:24 AM
Good morning. FIRE NO'D NOW. If Golden doesn't have the "nuggets", FIRE GOLDEN TOO. That defense is a joke, and on offense Morris should never play another snap at the U. DONE!
Posted by: D4-Cane | November 10, 2013 at 09:25 AM
Yeah 360; we fumble & shoot yourselves in the foot. VT fumbles & gets a 1st down & a TD. WTF? Football gods pissed on us on those four plays no doubt. Maybe they figured any team that takes a knee on a punt deep in their own side of the field doesn't deserve any good Mojo.

Posted by: CGNC | November 10, 2013 at 09:40 AM
Yup, just a game of bad luck. That is all. We played exactly how THIS team is suppose to play.
I do love how we won't accept a top 25 team though. ;-)

I still don't understand why that call wasn't reversed (my internet connection gave out for a while during the review). His knee was down BEFORE he touched the ball, much less controlled it. Isn't he allowed to get up?

And that will be my humble opinion for the day. Let's save the fire coaches for next year or even the year after. You have to evaluate what was inherited and what's being built.
We're in rebuild mode ladies and gentlemen. We're not in reload mode. Not for another 2 years at the least.
Off to the races. Y'all have a great day today. And always remember, it wasn't you out there playing or coaching so you shouldn't feel half as bad. ;-)

I had a revelation last night.
I've been slow to completely reject D'No's defensive scheme. I think that until recently, the scheme could work, even if it was unnecessarily complicated to implement it.
But now, I realize, there's been a change that greatly reduces the potential for these kinds of defenses: the 'targeting' rule.
A necessary component of a loose zone is that when you see the ball coming to a receiver, there are guys in position to take a good running start at him, and dislodge the ball for an incomplete pass or fumble -- or at least make the guy think twice about catching the damned ball. With this new 'targeting' crap, this key weapon is all but removed from a defense's arsenal.
D'No needs to adapt to this new reality. I mean, *&^%, if a complete bonehead like yours truly can figure it out...
Posted by: dj moonbat | November 10, 2013 at 10:02 AM
Soup, how are you doing today?
Posted by: CGNC | November 10, 2013 at 10:10 AM
What bothers me the most about the two kick turnovers early is that VT didn't get the ball on our 20 yard line...both TO's were on the other side of the 50. First quarter, not tired, and our defense could not even hold them to a field goal.
Duke beat VT without completing a pass in the entire second half and overcame four turnovers...not good for us.
Posted by: Texascane | November 10, 2013 at 10:10 AM
Texas, VT committed the 4 turnovers in that Duke game. Basically, the Hokies had happen to them what happened to us. But our D is a mess against better competition.

CGNC- Boone threw four interceptions, also. He was 7 for 26 for 91 yards passing and threw 4 INTs...and Duke still won.

CGNC...do something fun with Mrs. 86 today?
I have not been home since Wednesday at 6 AM. I am still in some dank hotel room in SoFl.
I still have a three hour drive just to get home. I'll be lucky if my key still opens the door when I get home and back to Winter Haven around 2 PM.
Then I have to spend at least an hour unpacking the car and putting things away from the tailgate.
Then I have to do a weeks worth of laundry and get ready for work the coming week.
Have fun? U people have NO clue.

We are back at square one. Why should we have faith in an unproven coach, with mediocre staff, using shyty schemes. This will not end. We will keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. That is the definition of insanity.

"Trust the system....Trust the process"....
The system is broke and the process does not work.
Miami is the Affordable Health Care Act of NCAAF! Al and DNO need to come out and apologize to Canes Fans.
We should have never been #7...or #10 or where ever we need up this week. We did not earn it....teams in front lost and we got be default.
This is on the STAFF...Off has no clue. Player groupings and set GIVE AWAY the play. Bud Foster Def threw everytime we were going to run...Stacked the line.
Def...we have healthy 1 and 2 deep...we have had 9 weeks to learn the system...we can not get a stop on 3 down and 10+....
I do not even have words! SAD SAD SAD.
Canes were built on great defenses....And the game has changed...not many GREAT defenses in today's game...BUT WE SUCK!

listened to D'no post game interview and this guy is clueless. he doesn't take responsibility for his lack of coaching. he obviously don't have the players on defense mentally and physically ready. the scheme and philosophy is soft and incompetent.
the most saddening part of the defense is its Al Goldens system. its designed to fall. AND HE DOESN'T REALIZE IT. sad, sad, sad.

Thanks CGNC and Mia Cane. It was the most frustrating night I've seen since ND last year. 36): I'd love to believe that all that ails us is the lack of a line, but I'm seeing a lot more problems than that, starting with the inability to put our guys in position to make a play. Why in the world would you throw the ball to Walford when he can't catch and run somewhere, he isn't elusive? And why keep trying the damned stretch play with a RB like Crawford who can't cut on a dime like Duke?

You can autograph that banner for me too. I'm so pissed. I'm sitting there, watch me tv, calling plays against the Miami D and am getting everyone right. It was like I was playing playstation. Unf*ckingacceptable 3rd down defense on ANY level. Its a joke. Offense just f*cks around and calls whatever they want on first and second, but when 3rd down comes, we all know what's going to happen on any distance. D'No would have been fired long ago if ANYONE but Al Golden were the head coach. But again, its Al's scheme and his scheme is pathetic. We need to bring in a bigtime DC that basically controls the whole defense without Al's input. I don't know if you can do that and keep Al Golden.
Posted by: The Dude | November 10, 2013 at 12:10 PM
Bottom line is we are not a well coached team. To hell with all of the excuses we suck on the most basic fundamentals. How many coaches on our staff would be hired by other teams in the top 25? AG has a horse shyt staff. I would love an opposing coach to speak the truth about the U and state they all laugh at our schemes and fundamentals. The Canes are my team but I will no longer spend money to sit in the stands and watch this horrible product. With all the issues the team has faced the past three years with recruiting the lack of quality coaching is a major issue. Jason Whitlock was very critical of the AG hire and as much as I want to think AG is the right man the on field performance leads me to believe unless he makes chances in his staff it doesn't matter how high ranking our classes are, because the coaching won't get it done.
Posted by: Canesteeler | November 10, 2013 at 12:10 PM
Papa, still not sure if it's the scheme or the approach. By that I mean, are we really putting the right people in? Are we teaching anything on defense? I ask because I am way past my wit's end watching receivers run short routes, literally without a defender within 10 yards of them, and doing nothing to counter. One play last night was illustrative, 2 guys running side by side towards Logan while a RB runs 15 yards past them, wide open. Almost as if they were in a 3-legged race while a lumbering unathletic VT RB picks up 20 yards. Coley and Burns justifiably get benched for their fumbles, yet we see repeated failures by defensive players who just keep playing.

So I am taped the game and was gonna watch it today. Based on all the posts, should i save myself 3 hours of misery and do something else??
Posted by: raizecane | November 10, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Jw I think it is a combination of teaching and scheme. To have short passes continually turn into 30 yard gains because no one is around the receiver is a joke. Week after week we continue to see the same mistakes. Also can someone please explain why our offense does not utilize the middle of the field in the passing game. Va Cane congrats on the win last night and even bigger props by your player how he reacted when he was called N word by the opposing player.

Miami got bitten at least twice with nearly identical plays being thrown against nearly identical blitzes. No defenders got near the QB, and there was a hole in the zone probably 10 yards in diameter behind the blitzing LBs. No disguise, no rotation of coverage to make it harder on the QB, just wide open field to exploit.
There were variations on the 'wide open underneath route' all night, but it's especially painful to watch when the QB doesn't have to hurry his throw AT ALL to beat the blitz.

I just don't get this staff they have an uncanny a ability to deflect blame and minimize their weaknesses while trying to enhance their strengths that's why all u heard was how we lacked talent, were freelancing, just trust the process, u tough

3rd-and-17 and Logan Thomas completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Stanford that pushed the Hokies’ lead to 28-14.
3rd-and-12, Thomas completed a 48-yard pass to Willie Bryn
The Hurricanes, who gave up plenty of big plays on third down last week against Florida State, did the same against Virginia Tech.
Miami’s defense gave up more than 500 yards for the second consecutive week.

“I think we need to step up and we need to make stops,” defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio said. “Every score that they had today was attributed to one or two things. We either had bad coverage or missed a tackle and that’s disappointing it. We had opportunities to get off the field and we didn’t do it.”
WHO'S to BLAME????
I watched the 5 or 6th crossing pattern and #52 took two steps then let him go. Gained about 20 yards.
Other crossing patterns...there was NO ONE there. I could have throw the ball to the guy..

The view from the day after....
Last night was a total failure of several years of rebuilding. There was no phase of the game where we showed any improvement from several years ago. Forget recruiting class stars, schedule, injuries etc. These are excuses for losers.
My sympathy for all who paid to sit in the rain. You supported and deserved more than our team and coaches gave you.
The truth is we're not much better than
years ago, and with Duke out probably worse.
SM and the OL are busts. Agree with the above post, everyone likes Kehoe but I've yet to see a dominate OL. SM has never improved from day 1.
There is nothing on the D side worth talking about. We were one of the worst last year, and little improved this year. To see the same play run over and over for big yardage tells me our players and coaches are not ready for this level.
Lets also keep in mind VT was an unranked team. My guess is after this Thomas will be getting votes for the Heisman.
I still figure us for losing 2 of the last 3. 8-4 just as I called it, and thats because of a soft schedule.
Its time to decide what we need to do to get past this level of failure. No'd must go, the sooner the better, or we'll keep losing just as we are. At the post game last night all he could say was we didn't execute. Translation, we have no idea what to do on the field.
As much as I've said give AG time, I'm afraid I was wrong. We're getting schooled every time we play a better team and struggle against the others. Same view at the post game he had no answers for failing so badly.
Spacers, we need to be real. Unless No'd goes the D will not improve. And if so, AG will not be coaching here much longer.
I feel sad, have no more weeds to pull.
Sorry SOUP, you esp deserved more for all you do than the team and coaches gave you last night....

This is on the STAFF...Off has no clue. Player groupings and set GIVE AWAY the play. Bud Foster Def knew everytime we were going to run...Stacked the line.

It is worse than U know. Even I knew it. Hech even an 11 year old kid in the stands knew it too. And I am NOT making this up.

Sorry CGNC, did not mean to bite your head off, just feeling a little pissy today as U can imagine.
Mrs. 86 refuses to go to Miami for any reason except to see family. Plus I leave on Wed AM for work in SoFl prior to the game so no way she can take all that time off to go with. She holds down the fort while I am away. I love that woman!
First load of laundry is in. Now 1 hour to download/select/edit photos and write something up for da blog. Then I gotta go mow the grass. A man's work is never done!

Got some good photos of the tailgate, which was the best part of the game.

Emotions of last night aside, this was one of those games that happens to most teams, where the players and coaching staff do not show up. If you have enough talent and good adjustments, you can come back after half time and win (ala Florida State vs Boston College).
We are more talented than VA Tech, but just barely. As shown previously, the Hokies had the third highest average star ranking of any team on our schedule (Florida and FSU were the highest, V Tech's average was just a hair below Miami's). The idea that this was going to be a blowout was wishful thinking.
In some respects, this year's Canes are very similar to the 2009 version at the point where we faced Clemson. That Shannon-led team had a crust of elite talent, but poor depth. And by the time it faced Clemson, injuries had depleted the starting lineup. Same situation (on offense) for Miami now.
That said, I cannot explain the defensive collapse over the last four games. The injuries we've sustained were primarily on offense.
Going on to Duke, this SHOULD be a blowout for Miami if you look at the talent levels.
MIAMI:
5 Star Players: 2
4 Star Players: 22
3 Star Players: 62
2 Star Players: 7
DUKE:
5 Star Players: None
4 Star Players: 1
3 Star Players: 42
2 Star Players: 37
On paper this should be our most winnable game left.

According to some, stars don't matter…..so if thats the case…i would not be shocked if we lost this game as well.

Its funny how NOBODY else wanted kehoe but we brought him back bcuz he has rings??????
Its funny how we bring back former players to be around the program, put their pictures and posters on the wall, and let em give speeches. Then we teach em to play the exact OPPOSITE????
Its funny how we have to rebuild for 5yrs to beat teams we already have more talent than??
Its funny how we hire a db to coach the rb's, a position that he's NEVER coached before, and we hire a te coach to coach our wr's???

It's been three years and I don't see improvement in any area. Not one. Not even the kicker. We don't even have one first round prospect. Not one. At least the Bitch could recruit AND coach first rounders with 30 less scholarships. Hell, look at his 1999 class.

I think it's even more funny that our rb's and wr's are good while our db's and te's are not.

Golden's job depends on weather he has the balls to fire DNO. Talk about accountability!
Posted by: TGU_Cane | November 09, 2013 at 09:16 PM
+1
I did not expect to see what happened last night and am getting over the shocking result. Golden must step up & make a change regarding his friend DNO because that's the only reason he's still is here. Sucks, but last night can't be ignored.
Muschamp anyone?

Its also funny how Golden and D'no took credit for defensive improvements and credited to players growing up and knowing the system after the fau, Florida, usf, and south fla games, but now all of a sudden they DONT KNOW THE SYSTEM??????
