Energy, effort and aggression.
Coaching, scheme and technique.
Turnovers, tackling and execution.
These are all essential components of an effective college football defense.
With the University of Miami football team clearly in search of a more productive and effective defense we thought we would take a look at college football teams across the Country that have turned their defensive performance around in one year or less in an incredibly impressive way.
We looked at statistics available at www.NCAA.com for defensive performance in the two most important categories of defense in football: total defense and scoring defense. What we found during our research was very interesting, somewhat surprising and at times even shocking.
Here are some of the hard, cold and indisputable facts that we discovered:
- Total Defense: In 2013 there are some very surprising teams currently ranked in the top 35 in total defense: #12 Bowling Green, #14 Memphis, #20 Utah State, #21 FAU, #27 North Texas, #34 UCF.
- The schools listed above are never ranked in anybody's Top 35 in recruiting but are all currently ranked in the Top 35 in total defense. How does that happen and what does that mean?
Next up was our examination of the teams that had the greatest overall improvement in total defense between 2012 and 2013. Here is what we found:
- In the one year between 2012 and 2013 there were only two teams that went from the very bottom to the very top of the NCAA stats on a year to year basis.
- Those teams who found a way to completely turn it around were Marshall and Baylor.
- Marshall went from a ranking of #101 in total defense in 2012 to #28 in 2013 a gain of 73 positions among the 120 teams ranked by the NCAA.
- But that is nothing compared to Baylor. The Bears went from #119 to a stunning #11 in 2013 a shocking gain of 108 spots!
Now, everyone will agree that those stats are simply staggering numbers by any measurement. The question is: What led to those improvements in performance at those specific schools?
That is where Canespace will lead you in Part II of this series tomorrow.

Posted by: Yoopercane | November 20, 2013 at 06:31 AM
And what's going on in this little play? Looks like we're in a 46 with an extra guy to blitz. DT gets completely turned around and has his back to the play. The LB chose the wrong gap and there is absolutely no soft zone to be found. Still think its the DC? Yea, I know. My posts get flagged for trolling when I actually bring some sense to this Cancerspace.

We need speed/attack vs read/react

MH: "Four-star freshman Jermaine Grace has been limited almost entirely to special teams, and at less than 210 pounds, doesn’t project as a starter next year. “He can help us on third down,” D’Onofrio said. “We’ve asked him to put on weight.” But he's not ready to be the high-impact player some expected."
CR: While I understand the game of football requires physicality, it also requires...INTELLECTUALITY! Hows about makin' the kid a SMARTER! football player, so WHEN! He puts on that size, it's WIN! WIN! I'm all for the process, but at some point, this coaching staff is gonna have to ACCELERATE! the process!

Yea..I couldn't stay away!!! I am losing respect for Golden. I have been a huge Golden supporter, but to sit there and allow D'No to put ALL he blame on the players is very troublesome. D'No repeatedly threw he players under the bus without saying anything about himself. It is only a matter of time (if it hasn't happened already) before the players turn on him or quit on him.

With his team on a three-game losing skid and his defense in the midst of one of the worst runs in school history, UM coach Al Golden continued to face questions Tuesday about defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, his scheme and the basic philosophy behind it.
Once again, Golden reiterated he signs off on everything the defense does.
"I'm going to keep saying it, that I'm involved in every aspect of football here at the University of Miami," Golden said. "I'm responsible for it all. Right now we're not playing well enough collectively. Again we had some good performances the other night. I indicated those to you the other night on Sunday. But really collectively it's not good enough and I'm responsible for it."
What exactly is the philosophy behind this 3-4 scheme? And why does it seem like players are reading and reacting instead of being aggressive?
"There's never a day where we ever talk about read and react. That's not even a mention," Golden said. "Depending where you are on a defense you have a key and have to respond. That's defense. We want to be a 3-4 because a 3-4 lets you get more speed at linebacker, get in and out of over and under fronts. It allows you to play with four down or go to an odd front, allows you to have speed, allows you to attack more. Interceptions are up, takeaways are up, sacks are up. All that's up, but it's not good enough. So we have to continue to build it. We have to continue to build our depth, continue to develop kids. Obviously we want to attack, want to be a dynamic defense, a defense that can fly around and disrupt the passer and get tackles for loss. Otherwise you don't want to be in that configuration. Again, it hasn't been good enough. I want to own the fact it hasn't been good enough the last couple of weeks."
Why did Golden choose this style of defense?
"Because we didn't have a million defensive linemen," Golden said. "We didn't have 16 defensive linemen. For the real big guys, the noses, you only needed a couple of those. [Curtis] Porter, Earl Moore, we had to bring [Justin] Renfrow in to have enough to go through the season. We didn't have the depth on the defensive line. We had more linebackers, more guys like [Tyriq] McCord that were a hybrid guy. I think it was the best decision for us coming into this season and we'll continue to personnel it. But we're going to have to continue to improve and continue to build depth and move forward."
How important is scheme in relation to execution?
"At the end of the day you summed up any coordinator or any entity. You lay out what the philosophy is, what you're trying to execute and ultimately it comes down to the execution of it," Golden said. "It comes down to whether or not we're carrying out everything we need to do in those positions. The problem with our defense is you can get exposed if there's nine or 10 guys doing it right one play and one guys is not. No. 2 when you have issues you weaken other areas by trying to fix those. I don't think there's any question in my career I've seen just about every defense, been a part of a staff of any defense that you can have. Ultimately it comes down to the execution of what you're trying to get done on any single play. That's it at the end of the day. There's a million different things we can call. We look at that every day. We're evaluating that, we're evaluating our personnel, making sure we putting guys in position to execute and get their talent in the game."
Have you seen a difference in run defense in the 3-4 compared to the 4-3?
"I think we had more success early in the year by continuing to be multiple, by lining up in both, by pressuring out of both, and we'll continue to do that," Golden said. "We need more tackles for losses, more sacks. And we need more takeaways. All three of those can be tied together. We need that kind of output to return."
NEWS AND NOTES
> Golden said there will be personnel changes this week, but he didn't want to delve deeper into than what UM released in its depth chart late Sunday night.
He did say senior Justin Renfrow would play more at end so Curtis Porter and Earl Moore see more time at tackle. Golden also said sophomore Tyriq McCord has played well at strongside linebacker the past couple weeks.
"[Freshman] Corn Elder is on the depth chart now. He is going to get more reps," Golden said. "[Freshman] Jamal Carter got a lot of reps today. Some of those guys are earning reps and doing a good job in the roles that we're giving them. We'll see if they can't add spark us or add something to it.
Is Golden going younger on purpose to get those players more experience? He stayed away from saying that -- or upsetting his seniors.
"It has nothing to do with their age," Golden said. "The one thing I want everybody to know -- we're going to support the seniors through this. Because we lost a couple of games I'm not going to turn my back on the seniors that really stood with us through all this tumult. I'm not going to do it.
"But certain kids I mentioned, Jamal [Carter], [Al-Quadin] Muhammad, [Ufomba] Kamalu, Corn Elder, they're earning reps. And they're earning reps because they're producing. It's just like Stacy [Coley]. Stacy is producing on kick and punt returns so now he's going to earn more reps. It's not that were taking any reps from any seniors. Some of these guys have earned reps and we're going to give them an opportunity."

2015 QB Gibson Leading for Heritage
2015 American Heritage (Fla.) QB Torrance Gibson is well aware of the stigma that has surrounded the Patriots for the past two years and he plans on changing it with this years playoffs.
“We’re very serious because everyone is doubting us and expecting us to lose. Heritage has a reputation for losing in the first round; so we have to show that we’re not that team anymore, we are an upscale team and we’re just preparing.”
Gibson was a back up last year for the Patriots and a year later some have called him one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the nation.
“It’s amazing. I remember last year just watching Tyler Cogswell (Former Heritage QB) and he’s a great quarterback and they’re ranking me higher than he was. It’s a blessing and I’m thankful for it.”
The Patriots are 11-1 and rolling after pummeling Cardinal Gibbons (Fla.) in the first round by a score of 71-24. Head Coach and former Miami Hurricane Mike Rumph has done a terrific job with the team and the 6’3 190 pound quarterback commented on him.
“He’s like us, he knows what we’re going through. He knows his players, when they’re hurting and what’s going on with their families. That’s what I like about coach Rumph and everyone is comfortable around him.”
Colleges from all around the country have been in contact with the American Heritage product and he’s got a few that are sticking out.
“Ohio State, Miami, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State, and LSU.”
Gibson claims no leaders at the moment, but did talk about two schools in particular: Miami and Ohio State.
“With Miami, they have been recruiting me since I was in the 8th grade. I know coach Golden, he’s an awesome coach. They have great tradition at Miami, a great program and Miami’s the best Florida school I’ve been to so far. I haven’t been to any other Florida schools yet, but they’re the best right now.”
Gibson does admit the fact that the ‘Canes have been on his trail for so long does mean a lot to him.
“Oh yeah, when somebody has been recruiting you since the 8th grade it means they want you bad and you can tell.”

And gettin' back to Grace...I'd rather have a 210 LB player BUSTIN' SOMEBODY'S ASS!, than a 250+ LB (Gaines) player ON THE WAY!
Another example, Gaines is naturally bigger than Perryman, but answer me this, which one has made more IMPACT! plays this year...

CR...isn't this all just depressing?? lol D'No and Golden are trying to stretch the NCAA issue out for as long as possible..since it can no longer be blamed for losing out on recruits, they are blaming it for their current players. And this will NOT get better because D'No isn't going no where and we get younger and weaker on the DL next year...oh and Perryman will be gone lol

Plenty of Hurricanes banged up for Tuesday’s practice
by Matt Porter
CORAL GABLES — Several Hurricanes are in various states of repair heading into the final two games of the regular season.
Freshman cornerback Artie Burns, who suffered an ankle injury in last Saturday’s 48-30 loss at Duke, was in a red (non-contact) jersey for Tuesday’s practice. Same goes for freshman linebacker Alex Figueroa (shoulder), who was also in a sling. While Burns was listed on Miami’s most recent depth chart, Figueroa was not, casting doubt on his availability for Saturday’s game against Virginia (noon, ESPNU).
Practicing in yellow (limited contact) jerseys: junior wide receiver Phillip Dorsett (partially torn MCL), who was listed on the depth chart as a co-starter. He is expected to return Saturday after a four-game absence. Freshman receiver Stacy Coley (head), who suffered a suspected concussion against Duke, was in yellow.
Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Danny Isidora (foot) was also in yellow. He has not played this season after breaking his foot early in August training camp.

My thoughts...
Eric Winston On Miami Defense
A few quotes from a interview he did on ITU.
"The problem is everything-with scheme and philosphy and then it tricles down to what the kids need to do and how they're executing."
"Like i said they're not dictating the game to the offense. They're just trying to counter-punch the whole time."
"We run the same play over and over. It does not matter if the TE is gashing us, the Rb gashing us, the short passes.... we still line up in the same formation with the same play.... opposing OCs must have a field day. I wonder what they say to themselves."
"If AG is a former DC and the D is our major problem, why has he not stepped in? Friends or not, in the real world you have to worry about your livelihood and family first and foremost.... flat out, your product is not getting it done on the field. Talent or not, these guys don't play as a cohesive unit on D"

Enough for the "negative" until after the Virginia game.
Miami will destroy Virginia and the seniors will play great.

UMike, what took the cake for me, is when D'Onofrio made this GEM! of a comment:
About Grace, D’Onofrio said. “We’ve asked him to put on weight.”
UHHHHHH, my question to that IS!, if He came in at 185-190, and He weighs 210 now...doesn't that mean He's put on 20-25 LBs since He's gotten here?

I was thinking the same thing..is all good
Posted by: UMike | November 20, 2013 at 09:26 AM
My guess on the change..
Baylor is a high powered offense scoring big points each week. The opponent is always playing from way behind, makes it easier to focus only on the pass. Non conference games were very easy, they have 3 tough games left. We'll see if the ranking holds.
Marshall - non conference schedule is extremely easy, hence they give up very few points/yds. The O scores well too...
Posted by: Account Deleted | November 20, 2013 at 09:30 AM
Ohio..I think he is doing a little more than flirting. I do think we get his last visit, which is huge. But with his possible credit issues, other schools present an easier path.

Are U giving the players a pass, even though it's them that's not executing?
Did the coaches miss tackles? Did the coaches miss assignments? Did the coaches drop passes?
Now, I'm not saying it's ALL the player's fault, but it's AT LEAST partly their fault. Probably most of the blame lies in their hands.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 20, 2013 at 10:15 AM
If dno is going to be fired.
Golden will give full support to dno during the season (as we see now). This will allow the players to stay focused and Golden not to have to do extra pampering to recruits while trying to win games.
After the season Golden will let the coaches, players, then recruits know about dno's decision to resign. But, it's okay because....
He will then slide Barrow in there and keep it moving. IMHO

It's partly the players fault... but if you can't keep a team working cohesively and motivated, it's the coaches fault.
Posted by: CalgaryCane | November 20, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Ohio..the players dont get a pass for missing tackles, but just about everything else on the D side is on the coaches. How do WE know they missed assignments..because D'No keeps telling us? If a team keeps beating us with 1 play, that is the coaches fault! lol... How do we know they are not executing..because D'No told us so? If a player or players are not executing in the 8th, 9th and 10th game of the season, whos fault is that? So hey have been in the system for a couple years and are already almost done with another..and they still cant execute? That is BS....all I keep hearing is blah blah "we dont have the talent".. blah blah "the players arent executing".... that is the coaches!
We dont have the talent of FSU or Bama etc..but we have more than enough talent to NOT get our shyt pushed in by horrible offensive teams. I remember hearing the announcer say "this is a Duke team that has been struggling on offense before today".... same with VT... how long are you going to give the coaches a pass?
Posted by: UMike | November 20, 2013 at 10:29 AM
Either those players on defense are a bunch of idiots or the coaches have mass mutiny on that side of the ball.
As I mentioned on the last blog, why waste a year of Grace's eligibility, on special teams, when as a LB he weighs 205LBs. Why not redshirt him and let him get bigger & stronger.
As far as running a 3/4 defense, it's not like we have a bunch of LB's to run that either, or should I say the caliber we need to effectively run it. I don't see Valentine making it in. Either grades or LSU will intervene. If we are going to run a 3/4, then why the slack effort of LB recruits in the incoming class?
Posted by: herbieibis | November 20, 2013 at 10:30 AM
I sure wish some people would get off the Stars and Swag bus!!!!! Yes we should have got our head handed to us by FSU. While we may have had more overall talent....again people stop drinking the cyanide Kool Aid....more 100 and 40 speed, more stars....more talk (Tracy YOU do not know what you are doing) more SWAG........we did not have more talent when it came to execution and presence of fundamentals, desire, toughness, aggression and general making plays when needed.
They blocked and tackled made plays were aggressive and owned both lines of scrimmage. We talk about these critical things yet we do not execute them on either side of the ball. Listen to Soldy....."they are getting beat physically on both sides of the ball"....why......we do not execute the fundamentals and both attacks O and D are passive. Got noting to do with talent. Bottom line face it we got people who want to ballroom dance with others....footballs a hitting sport dancing is a contact sport....thanks Vince L!!!!!!
We do not execute basic sound fundamental football in a violent angry physical attack on either side of the ball. Don't matter how much talent you THINK we have we don't have this kind who want to get it done by hurting your opponent. The really good talnet is going to the big boys who play the violent game in a controlled rage!!!!! JMO
Up North, don't say Tracy....pick a proven winner when you get #3....the late great Dale Earnhardt....he would really hit somebody!!!!!LOL!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | November 20, 2013 at 10:31 AM
Another thing...NCAA issues or not, the current coaches picked the majority of these players to fit their scheme. So if you dont have the right players for your scheme..guess what....thats the dam coaches fault lol
Posted by: UMike | November 20, 2013 at 10:43 AM
1. How do WE know they missed assignments
2. If a team keeps beating us with 1 play, that is the coaches fault!
3. How do we know they are not executing.
4. If a player or players are not executing in the 8th, 9th and 10th game of the season, whos fault is that?
5. how long are you going to give the coaches a pass?
Posted by: UMike | November 20, 2013 at 10:29 AM
---------------------------------------
1. Because I watch them get smoked on routes when they don't have help and think they do. That's either on the corner for not knowing he doesn't have help over the top, or the safety for not knowing he's supposed to be helping. OR a corner passing off coverage on a crossing route to a LB who isn't there. That's EXECUTION
2. Completely true, but also on the MLB to change the coverage. Gaines has been given that ability, but hasn't utilized it.
3. See #1 and my previous point about missing tackles, not shedding blocks, etc.
4. IT'S THE FREAKING PLAYERS FAULT. Coaches can't MAKE kids shed blocks, and other points I made in #1
5. Not once have I given the coaches a pass. They need to be much better. That said, players go out and play, coaches tell them what/how to do that during the week prior to the game.
Best example I can think of at the moment:
If you teach your child over and over and over how to tie his shoes a certain way, and he/she keeps tying it another way, is it all your fault? Of course you'd keep trying to teach him/her the RIGHT way to do it, but it's on THEM to listen and do what you're asking.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 20, 2013 at 10:45 AM
It is on the coaches to make a change if a player still cant execute the same dam scheme in the 9th and 10th game of the year. Maybe our corners dont have help because of the scheme. To me this is 70-75% coaching (being nice there) and 25-30% players. If a guy cant execute this late in the year after already being in he system a year or two, put someone else in who can. Were burning redshirts any way lol

I completely agree..Grace can ball and he could make impact on EVERY down.

If you teach your child over and over and over how to tie his shoes a certain way, and he/she keeps tying it another way, is it all your fault? Of course you'd keep trying to teach him/her the RIGHT way to do it, but it's on THEM to listen and do what you're asking.

If it were one child...sure. If it were a whole classroom, then you are either in an asylum or the teacher don't know how to teach.
