I want to think like that, but this one will be tough. The Hokies are reeling but know they can right the season with a win. We are the better team when 100% healthy but we're not. I don't think Thomas will have a very good game, and I agree with you about their running game. My thinking is that it's going to be an ugly, ground and pound game with tons of punts and hopefully not too many TO's by our guys. I'll say Miami wins 20-16.

Mountain Cane,

you got it. we can use a mix to establish the run or the pass. both set up the play action call to the TE or long to Coley or Hurns.

Agree, our finess plays such as screens as sad.

And for sure, either Clements or Hagans but we've got to start using a short yard back.

mountain cane

Longtimecanefan,

Read your comment from yesterday and I think you nailed it. It is easy to say pound the ball, because we are all afraid of Morris' inconsistency. However, VT will be all over that. We need to mix in some passes on first down.

Always running on first down and hoping for 2nd and 5 or better won't work here. There have to be some type of short/intermediate passes that Morris feels comfortable with. We need to try some of those sometimes on first down. Btw, the screen pass is not that choice----we might be the current worst screen team in CF.

I also think Clements needs to get some carries----he's been pretty productive on limited chances and we can't beat Dallas up!

I can see why. Miami is missing their #1 Rb and #1 WR and #17 only has one good wheel. I will tell you this, if Thomas marches VT down the field on their first possesion for a score, it will not be a good day for Miami.

So was he just lucky last year, when for the last few games he was the reason we were pulling out victories after the defense had left the team for dead?

I say no. I say he's capable of good play, but needs to be coached. Coley isn't getting out of Morris what Fisch could.

He supposedly had a messed up ankle last year too. His ankle has been the default excuse as to why he throws to covered receivers and can't check down and throws 6 yard passes in the dirt for over a year now. #NOEXCUSES? Yeah right.

herbieibis

Great answer TonyCane. 2015 will get us over the hump. As The Herb has stated, this incoming verbal group, as it stands right now does not have the elite, LB's, Db's or WR's. It's still up in the air whether Stuckey or Valentine will make it in at DT. We also need a bigger back, pronto! It's a good class as it stands and the ranking is nice but it's based more on numbers.
I'd rather the offense score at warped speed than be pedestrian getting down the field and worry about the defense, as if we can control that fact anyway. we can complain about Morris all day long but that ankle ain't getting better until our bowl game and that's a maybe. If I'm not mistaken he had a bone bruise on top of a sprain. Watching the kid from South Carolina come back and play after hurting his shoulder and knee in different games and playing like champ, with those injuries, makes me sick watching Morris play with a little sprain like a whimp. Like Sgt. Barnes, said in "Platoon" shut up and take the pain.

TonyCane

None of the above. It will be the 2015 class. That will get us the depth that we need to compete with the highest echelons of college football. But the 2014 class will get us very closer to the quality depth that we need.

The class that gives us some real depth on defense. That rules out all the classes currently enrolled. If we have a very high success rate with the 2014 class, that will be the one. If it's the more typical two, maybe three, guys who mature into star players, 'back on top' is still a few years off.

I don't know who's gonna put us back on top, but I really like this 2014 defensive class. Offensively, we already know what Yearby can do, but I think Powell and Rosier are gonna surprise some folks.

JCane

I'd guess the incoming 2014 class would be the key at this stage, along with the current 2013 freshman class (how good will Olsen, Coley, AQM, etc. end up) as we need the development of a deeper D-line with more speed, to add to a couple of freshmen this year, and some foundation for some of the guys who won't be here after 1-2 more years. Also, bringing in Kaaya, assuming all goes according to plan, along with a few more big offensive weapons (yearby, etc.) and big O-linemen should be exactly the necessary additions to get over the top (meaning true top 10 level and contending), but probably not until year 2. This all assumes that this group comes, is as good as advertised and has the right drive. There are still a few wildcards, such as Dixon's near-term announcement, what Cook will or won't do (stick with FU?) (and I think I saw his basketball U brother sadly just hurt his wrist and is out for the season), and a few others. However, this large group has the potential to be a very deep foundation for years of very good teams. The current D is much improved but is still a patchwork D line without much speed.

JMO, of course. Interested in hearing your thoughts...

Anyone take exception to Martin's h.s. coach's comments from the ESPN article today?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9936309/jonathan-martin-checked-hospital-leaving-miami-dolphins

Don't tell me that this kind of stuff is beneath places like Stanford. What a load of crap. For that matter, don't put in LSU and Miami together while leaving out all of the other SEC schools, etc. Unfortunately, this type of stuff is still old-school military style and is also part of football culture, pains me to say.
--------------------------------------

Martin's high school coach, Vic Eumont, told the Palm Beach Post that Martin's personality did not fit in with the Dolphins crowd.

Eumont was Martin's coach at Harvard-Westlake School, a private high school in Studio City, Calif. Both of Martin's parents went to Harvard, but Martin passed up on a chance to go to Harvard so he could play football at Stanford.

"Before, he wasn't around Nebraska, LSU kind of guys," Eumont, a former Tulane offensive guard, told the Palm Beach Post. "He's always been around Stanford, Duke, Rice kind of players."

Eumont told the paper he hasn't spoken with Martin since he left the Dolphins last week, but he said he could see how the team might not welcome Martin back in the locker room after Incognito's suspension.

"In locker rooms full of Nebraska, LSU, Southern Cal players, Miami players -- they'll look at this as a weakness," Eumont told the paper. "If he makes it through all this, and if he was encouraged to come back, he'd come back with a vengeance."

Here is an interesting stat regarding how the Canes lost ground under Coker and Shannon concerning the State of Miami: I read an article in September this year listing the high schools with the most nfl players, and Norland High in Miami and St thomas aquinas in Coral Springs were tied for the most with 6 each and Pahokee was third with 5. North Miami Beach was tied with 51 other high schools with 4 each. Of all those players from those schools, only Leonard Hankerson was a Cane. Many of the others on the list were never recruited. It's a real mystery.

Recruiting evalutions in South Florida is the key to turning this thing around, and Al Golden understands this. Golden has recruited the best players in South Florida since he arrived. He doesn't always get everyone, but he still recruits them.

Interesting paradox this season for the O and D.

If we score to quickly we lose the TOP stat and the D stays on the field and gives up points.

If the O controls the clock via the ground game it works perfect to get points and keep the D on the bench

What's we're seeing is the ground game isn't consistent enough, SM can't make the key throws to keep drives alive, and hence the D is staying on the field too long. Remember the FL game??

I'd offer we need to establish the short passing game or off tackle type runs to set up shorter 2nd and 3rd down yardage or play action down field. Hope about a swing pass? or pitch out? how many times do we every throw to a running back? And for sure, like the FSU game, running straight ahead on first down when they put 8 in the box is foolish.

It's never that simple, but for sure we can't rely on a soft D to get off the field consistently.

dj moonbat

I'm pretty unhappy with Morris's year.

But I think there's approximately zero chance he fails to make it to the NFL. And once there, I think he's a likely candidate for the traditional post-UM blossoming. He doesn't strike me as a DUMB guy, even if he's not the most cerebral QB ever, and he's way, way up there on the scale of QB physical requirements. If he can manage to get two straight years of pro-level QB coaching, it won't surprise me at all if he turns out to be an NFL starter.

j.w.

Why don't we run the same up tempo pace that Jedd ran last year?

Posted by: TonyCane | November 06, 2013 at 03:02 PM

PArtially due to what Texas said, partially due to a QB who probably can't keep that pace with his injury, and partially because we're not trying to just outscore everyone this year. With a 7-1 record, not seeing how doing it some other way would have worked better.

I will clarify myself....I am not a fan; I played HS and college ball; I am a coach and have coached at HS and college levels so I am a little qualified. I simply do not care for the passive Defensive scheme we play. I rarely have played for a coach or coached zone D.....I have always been on or coached psyco aggressive teams that were loaded with athletes so we ALWAYS play man. I never call it bump and run....I do not want you to bump and run with the guy.....I prefer seek and destroy....meaning jack his ass up at the line, beat on him hold him bite him kick him do whatever you can inside the rules inside 5 (or if in some cases like our league until ball is thrown)then fight like hell for the ball. Play the ball don't dog the guy and watch him...use your hips and turn. I also demand an aggressive pass rush and blitzes. I get up on the ball and get ready run or pass......and my lbs are up closer than UM. I do not believe in passive anything...O D or ST. I want to line up, and beat you physically I want to defeat you mentally by out muscling and out thinking you.

I want to beat you physically, but not just Bama style. I want more passing to TEs and WRs on O.....and I want to man you all over the field, confuse you with different schemes tackle with punishment in the run, beat you up in coverage, blast your ass when you do catch one, pound your qb with blizes and a fierce pass rush....I do not want to be your friend or be nice...in short I want to kill you on the field. It works for me....I think we are 72-3 in 6 seasons going into the playoffs last weekend, and we won so 73-3 4 of last 5 SBs. Yes we are 13 but we come at you like great whites.....aggressive. I love to attack.....not sit and wait. I live with it as I do love UM....I just don't care for it. I do not see the athletes on our team at the level where we could do what I do....but that's only my opinion.

Bottom line I want to win going away..no close shit.....I want you to be physically unable to walk and mentally unable to talk....cause we destroyed you.

Terrance Sullivan

What a clown

The Dude

TS, people are griping about D'No because the verdict looks like its out. The U will never have a true Miami Hurricanes level D under him. But yeah, the offense is worse right now. Morris can't consistantly make throws. He has to step up his game if we are going to have any chance of winning out. His INTs have been terrible, stupid mistakes. His ankle is an excuse. Everyone says its fine going into the game, but when he stares down a receiver and throws a pick, well, then its that ankle acting up again. If his ankle makes him so erratic, then bench him and go with the next guy. We don't need Morris gutting out interceptions. But the truth is, he just sucks.
