The 1980's rock group Styx had it right. It is possible that Miami head coach Al Golden has pulled the "Grand Illusion" over Miami Hurricane fans.
He talked a good game. He sounded like he knew what he was doing. But last night he failed. Miami had the chance to win the ACC Coastal division against Duke after Maryland surprisingly beat Virginia Tech.
Yet still the Hurricanes played poorly, unispired and eventually lost, as they were outcoached and outplayed, and lost in embrassing fashion to an unranked team once again in Durham, NC.
So the question is: Who is smiling now? Golden told us that we should just trust "The Process" and it would work. The problem is that the process MAY in fact be the problem.
The only question left is: "What happens next?"

Read these numbers and weep: Duke’s 358 rushing yards were its most since 1994. The Hurricanes allowed 543 yards overall and have now permitted 1609 over the past three games. Duke averaged 6.9 yards per carry. And there’s there: UM has allowed more than 500 yards in four of its past five games

I was busy yesterday with something more pressing...my guys. On a cool, damp, muddy, foggy field in Central VA, the Panthers ran the football for 253 yards and dominated both lines en route to a 35-0 win. The Panthers are Southern Conference champs and advance to their 5th SB in 6 years; they have won 4 of last 5 and have never been beaten in the SB. What a day!!!! We pounded the ball down their throats blew them off the ball. We ran for 3 TDs, my QB was 9 for 9 with 2 TD passes 1 to each TE. On defense, it6 was Apocalypse Now for the Bengals. We had 10 sacks, and went through their first 2 QBs....in the end with no real QB.....I felt a little sorry....Im getting old and soft....I mush rushed so I would not kill the kid. Both QBs were knocked out of the game.....3 picks 6 fumbles....2 luckily went out of bounds for them...blocked punt...whew we were big time. We had 1 penalty a roughing penalty on their first series....but their star WR never came back after that hit over the middle....wipeout....should not have been called. It just made us mad. Poor Dave....he did not know what to say. My kids poured water on me, carried me off....damn I cried ....but heck this will be my last game here....I have said nothing about it to them. We played like the champions we are: strong, tough, aggressive, hard, violent....but never said a word, never hit late or dirty. I shook the mans hand and told him great game great kids. If I added a few of his with mine, we could beat some varsity teams. I am very happy today for my charges, they were awesome. They made a coach very proud of them; I feel good about what I have done with them and they mean so much to me.....I m choking....comments on UM game little later. Thank all of you for your support you help me do this thing.

Bottom line: Nobody has gotten better on that defense, the last 3 years with DENO in charge, NO ONE! We had everyone coming back and although they are not world beaters talent wise, you'd think maybe we are in the 375 range on total defense. All the defensive coaches need to go this includes Barrow. It's time to get the dam broom out and sweep the trash out.
Players are going to say the right thing to a reporter. Nobody on offense is going to call out a defensive teammate, although I'm sure they think it. We are stuck in In a rut. How do we continually make these hapless QB's look this good? DeNO has had three years to do something but we are going backwards and I can't see it getting any better next year. Not that it matters but we lose, Gaines, Cain, Rodgers, Highsmith, Renfro, Greene, Porter, Gilbert, Robinson & Cornilius off this defense, now it could be said that we aren't losing anything but depth which is true, so our depth next year will come from a bunch of freshman. It ain't getting any better next year.

Smh... That defense couldn't allow me to breath during the game or sleep at night.
Seeing LBs 4 yards in the end zone on goal line situations when the QB is clearly running a draw from the one yard line baffled me.
I never thought we would see the day we made Dukes offense a powerhouse running team.
I'm not done with UM but I'm done investing any energy.
I have a baby on the way and I'm tired off my wife seeing me screaming and leaving the house...

Loved the Clinton Portis/Duke Johnson encounter. Priceless! First time I smiled since the 1st qtr. yesterday. I am not a hot and cold Hurricane. Love them to death; graduated from the U in 1970; have given some money to the U when I could; wore the pride and swagger like a badge, even though I'm a disabled 65 year old woman; had the time of my life with 86 & Mrs. 86 and all the Canespacers at a game at Sun Life a few years ago; remember meeting all the players at Syracuse (Coker let me in). I remember being in the elevator with my boyfriend at the hotel and just looking up at the players and my boyfriend saying "Whoa! Land of the Giants" and they were.
But now I'm pi--ed and embarrassed, as much as 86. I'm just glad my medical appts. at the U were Oct.26-Nov.2, a much nicer time, strolling around the U, spending tons of dough at the bookstore etc. But now all my U stuff just came, including my Canespace shirts from 86; and I'm just going to pack it all away. My tattered 3X5 flag is still flying outside, because it's pouring!! My new flag will not be flown until I feel the pride, hunger, swagger of yesteryear.
Enough for now.
Time to take my medication. So sorry I missed seeing you 86; next time I have to go to the U School of Medicine.

Yes KY.....I am going to call Donna, Al, AD.....and anyone else who will listen.....and tell them I'm taking over the D tomorrow!!!!!! LOL!!!!!
I did not want to watch what I recorded after seeing the lowlights on CFB station, ESPN, etc....they could be called lowlights!!!!
In a nutshell I see it like this....
The scheme is soft and ineffective. Our DL needs to be 4 men. They need to be quick aggressive strong use the damn hands get up on that ball and be ready. Same with LBs...strong, quick to attack, and be able to run with the TEs and backs. DBs in the face, hand chuck...never allow free release. Beat somebodys AZZ. I blame staff...and players. We are not aggressive, cannot cover and tackle, do not get to the point of attack, do not use hands, do not form tackle with shoulder do not have good footwork, cannot turn hips etc. We do some of it sometime....not every play. so guess what? You do not get off the field....and you basically chase people and reach to get them with your arms all day....Cannot win that way...EVER!!!!!!
I think the scheme is poor...and the players do not have top notch skills. Nobody uses their hands...they lean on OL. We are not ready, way off the ball on line, LB and DBs. We have average stances, we are not alert, aggressive, worst foot work I have ever seen.....we are average all around. These guys have not been taught right; no fundamentals. So you got a staff with a flawed laid back aw shucks scheme....and you fill the positions with median aw shucks I missed let me chase players regarding fundamentals....damn you cannot win.
Theory: we are getting guys who are at the second tier skillwise ie fundamentals. The top dogs: skills, athletic, fundamentals, footwork, attitude are going to the big teams....and we are getting guys who are fast, athletic......but they are flawed fundamentally. If you come to D1 with no fundamentals....don't care how fast you are....it is like starting over. I got to teach you how to tackle, cover, line up, react...hell and I got to teach you these things while putting you in a softer kinder gentler nicer system? Cannot win.
Same on Oline.....our footwork is horrible, we are like Frankenstein. We lean on people. I want my line to come up get split get down in perfect stance and blow off in a group driving the opponent into next year. Then do it again. We walk around, are casual, sneeze fart finally get set...then jump offside. Its like 5 humpty dumptys out there!!!
Now I am not passing on the backs and WRs...but on O if you do not attack at the point...hell nobody....even Duke is limited with inconsistent blocks.....can run. I am appalled at SM. He is very inconsistent, poor footwork, poor decisions....screw Manning camp, beat a live D then talk to me.
I resent the player this week saying fans don't know. I DO KNOW ASSFACE!!!!!! As a kid, HS, D! player and sandlot HS and college coach......starting at 7.... 48 years of it I know what to do.
My team, pound for pound, player for player....I mean this...are fundamentally superior than what I see out there. I do not mean we could beat them...or even get on the field....but man we execute to perfection. Yesterday, other than 1 borderline call.....I saw a perfect game. I did not coach a perfect game nor am I a perfect coach....my kids listen, learn, retain and execute what I teach....and are never afraid to ask how to do it or show me again....those kids are something. Yea they are 13....unbelievable huh?
People we do not know or execute fundamental football...you can beat lesser talent for a while....but lack of training and fundamentals will result in disasters....FSU was a better team talentwise....but not VT or Duke. Saying you should win cause you got more talent stars SWAG is foolish....but keep thinking it. All the while the disciplined fundamental confident little train that said I could team will fool you and win.
Epilogue: the ship is like the Titanic people panicking, not prepared, thought the ship was perfect....ooops its taking on lots of water....and we all have a stake in it. These are just my opinions TH.....I do know son I really do.....LOL

May I offer a suggestion that Canespace lives on. The articles gets posted, the pictures are taken the good times continue. We are a family we can all take a few steps back wont go to as many games and do more of the sharing aspect. And for those that can go to games can send in pictures and give a report. CaneSpace is the greatest Canes blog ever and I agree with my guy Native to the end and Yes Meeshell's rocks.

Right. UM could get better results if it had a scheme that allowed the players to pursue a simpler, more aggressive set of goals. I actually don't think zone defense, per se, is a problem. The 'Canes have traditionally run a fair amount of zone. But the LBs and safeties are hardly ever going hard after the ball once they see where the play is going; the whole scheme seems designed to set up gang tackles that never arrive.

I am very disappointed in the last 2 weeks....but I will never give up on the kids. I think things have to be looked at as they are. So many of you on here see it I am so impressed with so many of you. I wish you all lived here....Hell I would get you all signed up and we would have a coach for every player. I just want to win. I have spent my whole life devoted to it. I was not big, but I was a smart player, strong physically, fundamentally sound, hard as a rock and hit like an avalanche.
True story: after my 2nd (Soph) year of college my shoulder was really bad, kneecap split...and the school never came through with the free ride they promised when I walked on. Bitter? no....full of hate. So I transferred grades and spent usual summer working at Rec Hall driving tractor mowing fields and ballparks, umpiring little league, coaching baseball....fall comes and my old grade school has no football coach. My boss a HS classmate 4 years older than me asked me to do it. I said I hate football, never want to see one again. Biff said "really Tommy? do you? do you want to let your school down....and deprive some kids of football, of playing for one of the HS greats from around here just because you cannot deal with what happened? I am so disappointed in you Tommie, you have so much to offer and these kids love you....don't let them or me down"!!! I thought about it and decided to give it a go just to see. I was the coach, trainer, cheerleader, water boy, equipment manager...you name it. I took a group of kids who thought I was something....and we bonded. We beat everybody won it all. It was a vision from God, a Hollywood script, a dream come true. I was elated and here I am 35 years later still doing it. That first team will always hold a special place in my heart...like HS 83!!!! Those kids have kids....who have kids!!!!!! They taught me some things:
I love this game....I love coaching....I will never quit or give up on myself....or my kids....
That includes UM. I am disappointed but we will find our way. sure its been tough, frustrating...overdue for us.....but when you think of quitting think of my team motto for every team for 35 years: "Winners find ways to win; Losers learn to quit and quitters learn to fail". I said that 35 years ago. So when you are down and out, want to quit on yourself, your life, your UM team do not. Please remember me wanting to quit and give up.....and how a group of young kids playing a simple kids game put me on a path of richness that I would have missed had I quit believing in myself, but more important them. Just some food for thought.

This guy is Big 10 Honorable mention and can't get on the field? Child Please! I saw nothing out of chick n green to keep them in the game
By the way, defensive end David Gilbert, who was honorable mention Big 10 and a very good starter on a solid Wisconsin team last season, continues to receive limited playing time. Gilbert, who has a history of foot problems, is healthy enough to play, but UM coaches believe Green is the better player. And in fairness to Green, he had been one of UM’s best defenders before November.

You can't fix something unless you have the right parts, Hint: dump your buddy and the rest of his buddies on defense and get somebody out there that can at least tackle. Do you have anyone in the secondary that isn't afraid to hit someone?

Al Slogan wuz better off with the ncaa cloud over his head...
He can no longer use that excuse and get contract extensions and raises from it. He thought negative recruiting wuz bad then, what till he hears what coaches are sayin now. Its one thing to tell a recruit a school is going to get sanctioned but its 10 times worse when they talk about how bad of a coach you are and player development.
