Miami has accepted an invitation to play in the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, the school announced Sunday night. It marks Miami’s 35th bowl appearance and its first since 2010. The Russell Athletic Bowl will be Miami’s 37th postseason appearance; the Hurricanes played in the first two Palm Festival games – the precursor to the Orange Bowl.
It’ll be Miami’s fourth appearance in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Miami’s first two appearances were in Miami Gardens – a 31-21 win over Virginia in the 1996 Carquest Bowl and a 46-23 win over NC State in the 1998 MicronPC Bowl. Miami's last trip to Orlando was for the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl – a 20-14 loss to Wisconsin.
“On behalf of the University of Miami, President Shalala, the Board of Trustees, Coach Golden and our football program, we are honored to accept an invitation to play in the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl,” Miami AD Blake James said. “We’re excited to play so close to home and look forward to Hurricanes fans painting Orlando orange and green.”
Miami (9-3, 5-3 ACC), ranked No. 25 in the final USA TODAY Sports Top 25 Coaches Poll, will face No. 18/16 Louisville (11-1, 7-1 AAC) at 6:45 p.m. ET on Dec. 28. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN. It will be Louisville’s final game in the American Athletic Conference as the Cardinals will join the ACC on July 1, 2014.
The Hurricanes have won nine games for the first time since 2009 and look to win their first bowl game since 2006. Led by senior QB Stephen Morris, the Hurricanes opened the season 7-0 and climbed as high as No. 7 in the BCS rankings. Senior WR Allen Hurns (1,138) is only the fourth Hurricane in program history with a 1,000-yard receiving season and needs 19 yards to set the school single-season record. Morris needs 132 yards to become only the second QB in Miami history with multiple 3,000-yard seasons.
The Russell Athletic Bowl will be the 12th series meeting between the schools, with Miami holding a 9-1-1 series advantage. It will be the first series meeting since 2006, when No. 15 Miami lost 31-7 at No. 12 Louisville. It will also be the first series meeting at a neutral site; Miami is 5-0-1 at home against the Cardinals and 4-1 away from home.
Miami is allotted 13,500 tickets for the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl. Tickets, which are priced at $77 and $82, can be purchased through the UM Ticket Office online at CanesTix.com, in-person at BankUnited Center (M-F, 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.) or by phone at 1-800-GO-CANES.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was once committed to play football for his hometown Miami Hurricanes.
Now he is preparing to play against Miami in the Hurricanes’ first bowl game in three years.
At 6:45 p.m. Dec. 28, the former Miami Northwestern star will lead his 18th-ranked Louisville Cardinals (11-1, 7-1 American Athletic Conference) against the Hurricanes (9-3, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) in the Russell Athletic Bowl at the Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando.
“We are absolutely thrilled to accept an invitation to play in such a great game,” UM coach Al Golden said in a written release. “We’ve sat out the last two seasons and our players are thankful for the opportunity to play in a bowl game so close to home against a great opponent like Louisville.
“…We have tons of alumni within driving distance of Orlando and we look forward to a great game.”
The Hurricanes are 9-1-1 all-time against Louisville, the Cardinals’ lone win coming at home in their last meeting in 2006.
Louisville was ranked 12th by the Associated Press that day in September; and Miami, 17th. The 31-7 Louisville victory was televised nationally and left the Canes with a 1-2 start for the first time in nine years. That game began UM’s precipitous fall from the rankings and in national stature.
More than seven years later, this bowl game will precede Louisville’s first season in the ACC in 2014. The Cardinals are replacing Maryland in the Atlantic Division (Miami is in the Coastal), and they are scheduled to play Miami next season at a date to be determined.
The Cardinals, whose only loss in a weak conference came to No. 15 UCF, are ranked among the nation’s elite in several NCAA statistical categories. They are second in the nation in total defense, rushing defense, turnover margin and defensive third-down conversion percentage.
They rank eighth in passing yards allowed, fifth in team passing efficiency defense and third in scoring defense.
Offensively, Louisville is 29th in scoring, 18th in passing and 80th in rushing. The Cards also rank second in third-down conversion percentage, an area that has plagued Miami defensively and offensively all season.
Local talent
Bridgewater, one of 23 Louisville players from Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties, is second nationally in completion percentage and fifth in passing efficiency.
The Hurricanes practiced Sunday, but were unavailable for interviews. On Saturday, however, some of the players were asked what it would be like to face Louisville and Bridgewater.
“You know he’s going to play hard because he’s from down here,’’ said backup quarterback Ryan Williams, who played against [and lost to] Louisville as a freshman at Memphis. “He knows a lot of us. He grew up with a lot of us on the team. He’s played great all season. I’m sure he won’t play any less against us.”

Gregg Lerner @GreggLerner 6h
DePaul DT Courtel Jenkins, a Miami recruit, has been big in middle for Spartans. Holy Spirit just tripled him on last run.
Gregg Lerner @GreggLerner 5h
Courtel Jenkins going to Miami seems rather fitting. Has a Jerome Brown sense about him on D-line.

From CIS
New Jersey Kids
David Njoku, Courtel Jenkins and Kiy Hester will all be visiting us this weekend.
Hester and Njoku have legitimate interest and Jenkins is a current commit.
Someone said it in another thread, but we currently have 6 players on the roster from NJ. We also have multiple targets, from NJ with interest, in 2015. Seems like we will end up getting at least 1 of these kids every year.

From a CIS poster...
DT Cory Johnson NOT COMING
Per Rivals...
Rated the visit a 7 probably because he realized in order to come to Miami in January
he would have to take ONLINE Classes and flat out was like he was not with it...
He is sticking with Kentucky...Funny thing is he stated "If I didn't have to take the classes
Miami would be even with Kentucky"...really then why was the visit so bad...kid sounds
disappointed...
I guess we on to the next one...
He said the visit was cool ...His host was Jamal Carter...
Said that he had was tired the whole time because when he came off the plane
he went straight into all the activities...

New from Peter Ariz...
Before I get into each prospect specifically, Miami felt good about the outcome of this weekend. There are some fans who might be disappointed about the fact that there is no commit to show for the last three days, but besides Dixon previously planning to announce tonight, there was not expected to be any commitments. Results are not always immediate when it comes to recruiting.
Dalvin Cook
The lead-up to Cook’s official visit was highly anticipated and I’m told that he was “all smiles” this weekend. The past couple of years, there have been some top flight recruits who have visited Miami out of a courtesy to the staff, but that is not the case with Cook because he is sincerely considering the Canes. After this last week where both Coley and Golden gave in-homes to him and he visited, Miami feels like they have given him a lot to think about and this will be a tough decision for him. As his mother told me last week, Miami getting the last shot at him does give them an advantage. Other than that, his camp is staying quiet. He will announce next weekend so I expect to hear more throughout the week.
Johnnie Dixon
This is your classic case of nobody really knowing where a kid is going until he announces himself. There have been people saying Alabama, Miami, and Ohio State with him the last couple weeks and him pushing his decision back adds another layer into the scenario. Miami felt good leading up to this visit, but him pushing back would lead you to believe that his pick was not going to be Miami. Another source told me that Dixon not announcing tonight was a very good sign for the Canes. There has also been more talk about Ohio State than Alabama recently. Like with Cook, we will continue to hear more throughout this week. I don’t think Dixon will be doing much talking though, because his team plays in the state final this weekend.
Travis Rudolph
Rudolph’s visit went unreported until this morning, which is interesting for a local, high profile prospect. Miami has kept tabs on him for months and it seems like the coaches are going to make one final push to see how interested he is. Not only does his father want him at Miami, but his mother wants him here as well. James Coley in-homed with him after the visit. It would be a tough pull, but this weekend basically kept Miami in the conversation for him.
**I posted earlier this week that one of Ermon Lane’s coaches told me he believed Lane would decommit from Florida in January and that whoever landed Dalvin Cook would also have a great shot at Lane. Another person told me the same thing again today and Miami is aware that the two would love to play with each other. Lane is not an early enrollee, so this will give him time for Miami coaches to continue to recruit him over the next two months.
**Keep an eye on Brandon Powell. Although he’s solid right now, I don’t know how he would react if Cook committed. Powell has told me in the past that he is open to playing corner at Miami (which is probably his big money position), but there is also some talk that he prefers playing on the offensive side of the ball. He has visited both West Virginia and Tennessee recently.

I think all of us want D'Onofrio fired, but it's against my DNA to root for the opposite team.
It's been SEVEN YEARS since UM has won a bowl game. I hope you all realize what a win vs. Louisville gives this program:
- 10 wins.
- Momentum into 2014.
It's so very important to beat these suckers.

Tough to say. Both teams' records were really built on beating some unimpressive competition. Who knows what Louisville's record would look like if they'd played more ranked teams?

Are people on here actually hoping we give up 50 points and lose?
UM fans wanting our team to get embarrassed and miss out on our first 10 win season in who knows how long?
Auburn's defense got scorched in their last three wins, giving up over 500 yds and nearly 40 a game. I wonder if their fans are on some site hoping FSU blows them out so the defensive coordinator gets axed.
I doubt it.
And people wonder why our fans are considered the most fair weathered and unreasonable out there.

I was fortunate to go to a regional final game on Sat. My boys were playing; hell 30 or more of my old players were at the SB to see us play; I had 8 kids on LC Bird HS team. 4 of my linemen paved the way for my old tailback who carried 37 times for 175 yards in the rain, sleet and mud and scored the only td in a 7-3 win. Another one of my old charges had 2 pick for Bird, who won it all last year and will try to repeat Sat. I was very proud of those young men, they were awesome and it meant a lot that they asked me to be there.
Point to ponder...those kids had talent....but the reason they are where they are now was apparent Sat....fundamentals. The line blocked awesome, and Earl runs NS...he aint Travolta he aint no Disco Duck...he runs NS to daylight. Same with Phillip....playing that man coverage tight as hell...2 picks. I taught them how to execute basics repeatedly; combined with their talent they are winners because they wanted to learn the RIGHT way and execute the right way.
Execution of fundamentals is not a part time thing....it is a full time thing on each and every play. Do it that way, and winning becomes a full time thing...thanks Vince.
I do not understand our kids not being able to execute; who in the hell is coaching them in grade school...HS? Why can they not block and tackle...why should a D1 coach have to re-teach them what they should know? and Why, if they cannot do it....does the D1 coach not re-teach them? So many people keep saying talent talent talent....well you need to learn to define it PROPERLY people....talent is not 5 stars, 4.4 40's, HS All American, Under Armor games, 10 flat hundreds, 38 inch vertical jump, 10 reps of 225 ALONE BY ITSELF....its the basics of football, blocking and tackling, thinking, aggression, passion ability to learn.... COMBINED with those additional skills that make talent....supreme talent that wins......and kid yourself if you must if it makes you happy.....we do not have that many players like that. Proof is on the field.....you watch it long enough and know your stuff....and then ask yourself is it there? Read LBs articles and numbers tell me it is not there in droves....just flashes.
I have never attacked this staff, I like AG and Co. I want them too succeed big time....but I have been at this a long time....and I know what the heck I am talking about I do. We have to focus on execution of fundamentals...that's on the player for not having them, and the coaching staff for not seeing coaching and correcting it....its a TEAM thing people....JMO

Have fun taking it from there.
D'No could be fired any moment, it would just require his college roommate to say goodbye. But since he's just stupid enough to not think his scheme that's never won anything at any level of coaching he's been employed at isn't a total failure, that's your catch 22. And it's the reason why attendance will plummet next year and then it'll be time to say goodbye to this failure of an era in Hurricane football. Because Louisville played in a really weak conference, unlike the ACC and the Coastal with it's defending champion of Duke, or something.

Posted by: RCCF | December 09, 2013 at 11:55 AM
We recruited them because we needed to fill a roster with players.
And when you are doing that from a position of complete weakness, you do not land the kind of players who are difference makers, especially at positions like quarterback, linebacker and defensive tackle.
Great running backs, wide receivers and corners are much easier to come by, especially in South Florida.
Ask yourself this, if this was two or three seasons ago do we show Dalvon Stuckey the door or do we sign him?
We sign him.
This year, without the NCAA mess looming over us, we are finally getting the players we need at need positions.
I know the win now, no excuses, the coaches suck, fire everyone, Randy was better, wish we had this coach or that coach crowd will never understand this, nor do they care to, but that is the reality of what we have been going through.

I agree with your overall point, but I have to disagree with this.
Stuckey was/is an academic casualty. He wasn't coming with or without the NCAA still looming.
Unless U think we'd do something illegal and admit someone who doesn't qualify while the NCAA is in our kitchen.

From what I've seen here you are the know all of recruiting so if you say it I believe it.
The point remains the same, we were never going to attract marquee players at the most important positions with what we were going through.
This staff is finally getting to show what it can do when operating on a level playing field.
Posted by: Go Canes | December 09, 2013 at 12:19 PM
Go Canes, I do NOT know it all, just ask OGV. LOL
But, like I said, I agreed with your overall point. The last 2.5 years under the NCAA's black cloud has been more difficult than most realize.
And yes, this staff will now show what they can REALLY do. Sure, we'll miss on some guys, but no one gets EVERYONE they want. Even Bama. We won't miss on as many as the past and we'll take a lot less "gambles" on kids as well.
