Some will argue that the win against Florida was of little significance, that the Gators were a shell of the team that they once were when the season started.
However, when closely examined, the numbers clearly show a different story.
Using the same methodology as before - factoring out transfers and those no longer on the team - the Gators had a formidable roster when they came to play the University of Miami in early September:
Miami Hurricanes
Five Star Players: 3
Four Star Players: 20
Florida Gators
Five Star Players: 7
Four Star Players: 35
On paper the Canes were heavily outmatched, but narrowly prevailed at home. Despite how the Gators finished the season, at this point they were not injury depleted. It should be considered a major victory for the team and coaching staff, and the highlight of the 2013 season.
Now let's look how they fared against the rest of their opponents and consider their strength of roster:
Florida Atlantic University (Won 34-6)
No Five or Four Star Players
Savannah State University (Won 77-7)
No Five or Four Star Players
University of South Florida (Won 49-21)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players: 5
Georgia Tech University (Won 45-30)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players: 6
North Carolina University (Won 27-23)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players: 16
Wake Forest (Won 24-21)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players: 1
Florida State University (Loss 14-41)
Five Star Players: 9
Four Star Players: 32
Virginia Tech University (Loss 24-42)
Five Star Players: 1
Four Star Players: 16
Duke University (Loss 30-48)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players 1
University of Virginia (Win 45-26)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players: 10
University of Pittsburgh (Win 41-31)
Five Star Players: 1
Four Star Players: 10
University of Louisville (Loss 9-36)
Five Star Players: none
Four Star Players: 12
Overall, when facing opponents with fewer 4-star and 5-star players:
- Miami had a record of 8-3.
- Against opponents that were closest to Miami in talent UM was 3-2.
- The loss at Duke was clearly the lowlight of the season.
- It was the mirror image of the Florida victory.
- Against opposition with superior talent, the Hurricanes were 1-1.
Going into next season, the Hurricanes should have a stronger overall roster due to the 2014 class. Miami will get closer to FSU (and much closer in 2015), and will increase the talent gap with the rest of their division.
The future is looking up!

Top 12. Anyone watch the allstar games this weekend? I can't get into them regardless of how many of our guys are doing. Hope they did well, of course, but just not my idea of football.

You guys are KILLING it with the stats lately… it's becoming more and more blatantly obvious that we're only "slightly" behind where we should be with athletic talent, but LIGHTYEARS behind on coaching prowess and player development.
One more year AG… you gots LOTS to prove Bro.
And yes, the two dudes laying together on the gator seem a bit "ambiguous."

I'm leaning more towards this. And it's not only been this coaching staff. It has plagued us for years
Posted by: KYcane | January 19, 2014 at 11:48 AM
It's true stats don't lie and for all the stats, stats don't measure heart or lack there of, stats don't measure determination, and stats won't help get rid of DENO, at least not until the stats keep painting the same picture. I don't think Picaso could of painted a better master piece, than was painted this year but I guess to understand the essence of good art, I guess you have to look deeper at the underlying meaning, which The Herb doesn't see but The Golden one does.
Nice disparity of talent between us & FSU. The Crocs don't mean anything to me because we don't play them much. We get Valentine back in here and The Herb will feel much better. It's sad that we have to scratch and claw to get another RB, in this class and try and beat out the likes of WSU, Marshall, Louisiana Tech and a few other low level Univ. just to get another one to commit. I don't mind us getting a Jucco here and there to fill a need but Goldie thinks it's his own personal stop gap to his problems and it's even an act of congress to get one of those guys.

Really good article Tony. I'd love to see an offense-defense breakdown of our team and an upperclassmen-newbie breakdown too.
I know I'm being greedy!!

### Mario Cristobal, who angered a bunch of people at UM when he bolted after less than two months on Al Golden's staff to take a job with Alabama, continues to spend time and energy trying to flip UM oral commitments. The latest: Chad Thomas, UM's highest-rated prospect. Thomas, rated the nation's No. 1 defensive end, said he's mulling whether to visit Alabama and also has been considering a visit to FSU. But he remains orally commited to Miami..

Stupid game of reading the mind's of high school players.
Guys, our BB team won a tough conference road game last night and no one but me had a thing to say about it.
And in the next six days (way before NSD rolls arund), they'll face two ranked conference foes.
BTW, it's the second to last day of meaningful football for quite some time.

Valentine ain't goin nowhere. Usually, when we get a decom, they don't come back. TV's is different...He wanted to sit down with Golden, to clear the air on Golden's future. Besides Bryce Brown, we've never, or rarely had a kid, that wanted a post decom meeting with the HC.
