Six Atlantic Coast Conference baseball teams, led by No. 1 Virginia, are ranked in Baseball America’s preseason Top 25 rankings.
The Cavaliers, who were picked by the ACC coaches as the league’s preseason favorite last week, earned the top spot in the poll for the first time in program history. They are joined in the Top 10 by No. 5 NC State and No. 6 Florida State.
With Virginia at No. 1, it marks the second straight season that a team from the ACC has held the preseason top spot after North Carolina last year.
Rounding out the ACC teams in the Top 25 are No. 13 Clemson, No. 16 Miami, and No. 17 North Carolina. The six league representatives are the second most from any conference in the country.
Miami will return its entire starting rotation in 2014, including Louisville Slugger All-American lefthander Bryan Radziewski and USA Baseball Collegiate National Team member Chris Diaz. The duo combined to make 30 starts this past season, and both finished among the top three in the ACC in earned run average.
Both Radziewski (29th round, St. Louis Cardinals) and senior righthander Javi Salas (38th round, Minnesota Twins) decided to return to campus after being selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while Freshman All-America David Thompson (.286, six home runs, 46 RBI) will help anchor a Miami lineup that returns seven starters from a year ago.
Joining the returning nucleus is a recruiting class ranked among the best nationwide. The group was rated No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 by Baseball America – its highest ranking from the publication since 2006. The Hurricanes have had two classes ranked among the top 10 by both publications in back-to-back seasons.
The 2014 season gets under way on Feb. 14 with all 14 ACC teams in action. The poll from Baseball America: http://theacc.co/1fhEuP9.

Soup it doesn't matter how logically you lay things out, some people just want to hate.
I said from the beginning I'm not a fan of D'no..
But anybody who thinks our offense was efficient AT ALL this year and doesn't realize how that correlates do a defense hasn't played any football in their life.
Point Blank!
FYI I could care less who coaches the D if we are more aggressive. I hate the bend don't break method. Yet, if you look at the majority of the games, nobody said hey this D is going to keep us in the game.
We all said from day 1, we sure hope Morris can throw up some points. He will have to have a great day to win. Bottom line, in just about every big game we played. His offense couldn't make huge plays to keep us in the game.
I think we can all agree we had bigger expectations for him in 2013, then what he amounted too.
FWIW - I like the kid. I'm not sure if the offensive failures fall on him, Coley, or on injuries (his included) but I thought our offense could have been more impressive on a larger scale considering our weapons.

And no late victories for NC (where he threw the ball all over the field before figuring out his team had white jerseys in th 4th) and that bad comeback against WF don't count as BIG games.

Also soup, give me the dates again for the four play thing. I'm going to meet you guys I think for the first baseball game at the Titanic I assume.
Just have to plan ahead accordingly..
I'll take the metro straight from work instead of taking the car that day.

"Give me Canes or give me death"
I definitely think Patrick Henry would be down with the orange and green. Definitely.
---------------
"Remember folks, we are not here defending or arguing why Miami is not great or why we cant be average. People are here actually defending and making excuses as to why its ok to be this bad! I have never seen this"
- Given the inherited circumstances, nine wins is actually pretty good.
- Yet the defense cost them against both Duke and Virginia (where the offense actually overperformed), a win against either would have put them in the ACC Title Game.
- The offense was good.
- But without a replacement for Duke and Morris's tendency to leave a protected pocket... it could have been better.
- Big fan of Allen Hurns, Denzel Perryman, Maurice Hagens, and Brandon Linder... evidence that player development is taking place.
- Yet the amount of suck that is a Mark D'Onofrio defense can't be overstated.
- Wins are trending up.
- Yet UM hasn't won a bowl game since 2006. Pathetic.
There is zero excuse for D'Onofrio to have kept his job, and that is Al Golden's fault. Shame too, I really wanted to remain in the Golden Supporter Club. I'm firmly in neutral, with UMike and many others in tow. I have zero issues in both praising the offense and condemning the defense.
From previous posts: yes, the offense really sputtered in some games. But they overperformed the competition in every regular season game but two: Florida and Wake (both games they won).
I also like the special teams play, as it has consistently improved. I'm a little worried about the kickers this year, but three years of Al tells me that we'll be fine by opening day.
But there are no excuses, at least from me. Al had every opportunity and right to improve his defense and didn't do it. So on his head be it. 2014 will tell us a lot:
1. Can Coley actually coach, or does the talent mask his weaknesses?
2. All Golden players vs. a more difficult schedule. Does it work?
I actually think we'll have better QB play, but in order for UM to compete for the ACC Coastal... one of the newcomers will have to create a pass rush in spite of the bad coaching.

Jiggafras, that was a great post on the last blog. I never thought about how bad our offense was at times under RS, times we had ZERO playmakers on O, and freaking Patrick "Bubble Screen" Nix as OC, Kirby & Freeman at QB etc, and yet the D wasnt nowhere near this bad.
I am NOT trying to debate the issue, everyone know where I stand, just pointing out this was a good post and made a lot of good points.

Walton is transferring to help his bid to reclassify. At least that is what I have seen and read. I don't think it has anything to do with Ice. Now that Treon Harris is graduating, and he got another title, he could move on to UM. As someone pointed out earlier, I think those were the reasons he didnt stay at UM even when Golden asked.
Posted by: UMike | January 28, 2014 at 09:31 AM
We’ll have a lot more on UM recruiting in the next few days, but this much is clear: This will be a stressful week for the Hurricanes with regard to three elite local defensive prospects: Chad Thomas, Travonte Valentine and Demetrius Jackson.
Thomas, the five-star Booker T. Washington defensive end, said he remains solidly committed to UM but enjoyed his visit to FSU and hasn’t ruled out the Seminoles in interviews with several recruiting web sites.
Valentine, the four-star Hialeah Champagnat defensive tackle, previously identified LSU as his favorite and told SFHSSports.com that his LSU visit this past weekend was “amazing.” He will visit UM this weekend; the Canes are his only other finalist.
Jackson, the four-star defensive end from Booker T. Washington, told Canesport.com a couple weeks ago that he would cancel his remaining visits and fully intends to honor his UM commitment. But he visited Arkansas over the weekend and hasn’t addressed his future.

^^^ I wouldnt worry. Jackson MAY leave, but Thomas isnt going anywhere.
Posted by: UMike | January 28, 2014 at 09:32 AM
If Golden is going to hire Ice, it has to be now. He's got 8 days until signing day. Unless it's been "promised" to him quietly, in which case we'll know on signing day anyways if Treon picks us.
Only way he comes to UM is if he knows daddy has a job there, IMO.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 28, 2014 at 09:33 AM
Jackson and Thomas are both solid.

Tito workin...
2015 Tampa Freedom (Fla.) DE Scott Patchan had quite the junior campaign after having an injury plagued sophomore year.
“Junior season I got better for sure, my stats went up a lot mainly because I couldn’t finish out my sophomore year because I got hurt. I had a little over 50 tackles, I had 8 sacks, about 23 or 24 tackles for loss. I think it was 3 recovered and 4 forced fumbles.”
While Patchan clearly improved in the number department compared to sophomore year, he also feels he improved in his technique.
“I definitely got better with the use of my hands. Sophomore year I was just wild and crazy running around, but this year I was more technique. Going into my senior year I want to polish up my skills with hand placement and footwork for college.”
The 6’5 225 pound rush end is being courted by almost every top school in the country and he admits the recruiting process is getting pretty hectic.
“Oh yeah, very very crazy. Alabama, LSU, Florida State those are just the big name schools recruiting me.”
Other schools recruiting the Tampa native include Clemson, North Carolina and Ohio State.
While the 2015 defensive end claims no leaders, he does admit there is one school that is recruiting him the hardest at the moment.
“Miami, everyday I speak with the coaches. Some day’s I receive talks from all the coaches. I’m just trying to establish relationships with the coaches and coach Jethro (Franklin) has a really good NFL background and that’s definitely a plus for Miami.”
Patchan was able to visit Coral Gables for the Hurricanes Junior Day and had a very good time while there.
“It was all good, hanging out with all the coaches. I got to meet some new recruits and make new friends. Larry Scott, he’s a local guy, my D-line coach who’s also recruiting me coach Franklin, coach (Mark) D’Onofrio and Coach Golden.”
The Tampa Freedom product rated the Junior day a “9 out of 10 or even 10 out of 10”
During his time in Coral Gables, Patchan got the opportunity to sit down with both coach Franklin and coach D’Onofrio one on one and talk about the defense.
“Sitting down at the junior day with coach (Mark) D’Onofrio about the defensive set that he runs, it blew my mind because there’s so much to it that no one expects with stunts. It’s not always just run on the field, work a move and get to the passer. There’s stuff that’s incorporated into it, it made me want to expand my mind.”
Patchan is currently weighing all his options and is unsure of future visits, but does have an idea of when he will be narrowing his list.

Jackson and Thomas are both solid.

I agree with this, just think Jackson is a bi flakey and you never know with him lol... Just last week he was 100 % Cane, was all over Twitter about it, publicly said no move visits... and then visits lol.. Arkansas just this week picked 3 South Florida players, so it could make an impression. I do think he ends up here, but just never know with him

If Miami some how flips Lamont Gaillard, dude is gonna need some major tattoo covering lol
Posted by: UMike | January 28, 2014 at 09:43 AM
I think Walton going to MC has a lot to do with Ice. Believe me, if Walton wanted to graduate early, Ice would find a way, while keeping Him at BTW. Ice is a great coach, but He ain't that great to where He's comfortable facing His former star pupil.
And as far as I can remember, Tommy Streeter was dual enrolled at MNW, and Turner Tech (down the street from MC), so He could graduate early.
Posted by: CaneRock | January 28, 2014 at 09:44 AM
He said the Arkansas visit was a courtesy visit and "Tell Canes fans not to worry".
So, I'm not worried.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 28, 2014 at 09:46 AM
CR...could be a little of both. But Walton could of also waited until something was confirmed. And BTW just had another elite RB transfer in. Either way, no matter the reason, their both good reasons for Miami lol
Posted by: UMike | January 28, 2014 at 09:46 AM
Ohio.. I get that... but you dont take a "courtesy visit" right after you say you are shutting it down and not taking any more visits lol.. especially to the team that is Miami's main competition. I am not saying Im worried, just this dude cant be trusted until he signs lol
Posted by: UMike | January 28, 2014 at 09:47 AM
None of these kids can be trusted until they sign. I refuse to worry about a high upside kid, tho.
Immediate help and a future 1st round pick? I'll worry a little then.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 28, 2014 at 09:50 AM
IMO our #1 recruiting tool for Thomas is the Frost program at UM.
Just can't picture that kid going anywhere else. Jackson either.
Just going to let them enjoy the last few days of everyone wanting a piece of them.
And Valentine, whatever. Kid is a major talent but I refuse to sweat anyone who decides to go somewhere else. I only care about the players who want to be here.
Posted by: Go Canes | January 28, 2014 at 09:52 AM
Go Canes... I agree.. unless Tally or Bama become Hip Hip hot beds in 8 days, Thomas is firm. The staff will close strong I believe and maybe Jackson or Harris. Even with no surprises, if they keep what they got now, still a great class.
