Over the last 5 to 10 years the college football recruiting process of high school athletes has gone beyond the ridiculous, moved right passed the absurd and has graduated into the category of just plain dumb.
The fact that mature, intelligent, stable and otherwise grown men would follow these high school kids' every move, tolerate the constant "flips" of their commitments from one University to another and endure the now infamous "hat game" on National Signing Day is, well for a better word, dumber.
But it is what it is and we all know that the coverage of the recruiting process every Winter has expanded exponentially (Note to recruits: That means "like a whole lot") in recent years to where it has become as important, no make that more important, to many college football fans as the actually football games played on the field each Fall.
Welcome to the world of dumb and dumber.
So, to keep up with the crowd and in our continuing effort to remain relevant on today's college football scene, here at Canespace we too will provide you all of the exciting "wall-to-wall coverage" of National Signing Day once again this year on the first Wednesday in February.
Our recruiting gurus here at Canespace, OhioCane and UMike, will bring you up to the minute updates so you can instantly know which highly ranked recruits Miami head Coach Al Golden "landed" (whoo-hoo, they are great!) and which ones "got away" (Boo, they suck anyway!).
The reasons and rationalization for the 2014 recruiting haul will shortly follow. Then there will most certainly be much angst, joy, anger and gnashing of the teeth that will be punctuated by some really dumb things being said by usually reasonable, generally intelligent people on the Internet about how "dumb some of these kids are" or how "the recruiting process keeps getting dumber".
We think that you will be very encouraged to know that there are only nine days to go until dumb meets dumber and NSD 2014 takes place (Read: Thank God it is finally over).
Then we will wait a year to do it all over again with great predictability.
In between there will be some football games that are played.
But hey, who really cares about that anyway?
LB, Calvin Heutelou is in, but Wyche has to wait. That is what I said "assuming he gets in."

Kiss of death always seems to be "Miami is my dream school"
Posted by: SinisterCane | January 27, 2014 at 08:50 AM
I thought Coker already sat out a year, I good be wrong though. He just wasnt signed anywhere. I remember before the season people talking about he maybe coming to Miami, that would indicate he already wanted to transfer before the season.
Posted by: UMike | January 27, 2014 at 08:51 AM
Sinister, that does seem to be true over the last few years, but this kid Spence is a great example of what kid should do if their true "dream school" offers.
Posted by: UMike | January 27, 2014 at 08:52 AM
I'm starting to think the "dream school" things might not mean the same thing to each kid. Maybe a "dream school" just happens to have all the things you like, but not necessarily the place you grew up rooting for lol, I saw where Howard's mom said Georgia was his dream school, and that was after he was already at Miami lol

Posted by: UMike | January 27, 2014 at 08:52 AM
I used to think that too, but I'm starting to lean to what Chad Wilson said...these kids need to WAIT! These coaches ain't nothin' but salesmen:
“The reason you are seeing all these decommitments is because some kids are finally taking their official visits now and seeing schools and changing their minds,” Wilson said.
“It’s sad because the fan bases get on Twitter and get on the kids when in reality it’s just a flaw in the system. You speed things up and that’s what is happening.”

The Bo Scarbough stuff? No point in reading into that right?
No chance Miami steals this kid? And He would start from day one if we did right?
Duke and him would be used in tandem.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 27, 2014 at 09:04 AM
CR... I hear that, just saying if a school is truly your dream school, there is no need for visits. Or you can say, "while this school could be my dream school, I would be doing myself a disservice to not look at all my options" lol

"Kiss of death always seems to be "Miami is my dream school"
That's reason 23 why I can't take recruiting seriously.

3-Star WR Kahlil Lewis from Miramar
Posted by: UMike | January 27, 2014 at 09:16 AM
I THINK it was Kahlil Lewis who was quoted as saying he wants to keep the Miramar-WVU pipeline going. His is a WVU commit, and his former coach is now at WVU which explains the recent commitments from Miramar to WVU, including Miami target and 4-Star DB Kendrell McFadden

CSM...I'm assuming He graduated.

This. Coker graduated so no rule he has to sit out.

Whyche is qualified, the only thing he's waiting on is an appeal to be an EE or not. ACC rules say U have to be at a junior college for 3 semesters to get into an ACC school. He's been at his JUCO for 2 semesters. He's in in May regardless.

Well there is that and having the WVU admission requirements of:
1. Is he breathing?
2. Can he spell "touchdown".
3. Can he sign an "X" on a LOI?

Having Kevin Beard as the OC for the south Florida express has to help out the Canes one way or another.
Posted by: UpNorthCane27 | January 27, 2014 at 09:26 AM
U know what's funny, we talked about Scarbrough here months ago. Not that he was coming to UM or anything, but that he was giving us a real look.
It's interesting to read that this staff has been on him "hard" and "quietly". I wonder why the hush hush?
If this kid goes through with his visit this weekend, we're in it. Wow, what a pull this would be.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 27, 2014 at 09:30 AM
Don't know if it's been posted here, but there's talk of Ice Harris joining Golden's staff as some form of "quality control". Needless to say, this would go a LONG way in landing Treon Harris. Lol
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 27, 2014 at 09:37 AM
Not just Treon, but South Florida/Miami kids. Ice is well respected and trusted in those areas.

Ice for "quality control"? For which side of the ball?...offense I'm assuming. Nevertheless, getting Ice back is a smart move, the guy knows His Xs & Os, and like UMike said, He's the Dean Of Coaches in Dade.

UM Baseball #16 ins Baseball America Preseason Poll
Posted by: UMike | January 27, 2014 at 10:25 AM
I know Ohio lol.. but I do think that is how i should work.. the local school offers early, and the out of State schools follow, not the opposite lol
Posted by: UMike | January 27, 2014 at 10:26 AM
Umike...Then we have a situation where a kid is committed that we never wanted.
Be smart and let the process play out..
If the kid chooses a school just because they offered early, in the end he will learn and come to regret his choice.
And this should be the run down whomever the coach is.. You don't just offer because other schools are.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 27, 2014 at 10:38 AM
CSM... every year we get a kid who commits that we dont really want lol... Dennis Turner is this years example. You can always push a lesser talented guy out if needed, it happens all the time at every school, just part of recruiting.
But the staff is starting of right with the 2015 class, they got all the elite guys offered and threw out a ton of offers yesterday.

Also, I dont think a kid should commit just because a school offered early. I just like the idea of the offer if only for the appearance you are after the South Florida kids. I think that is why you see so many de-commits every year, they choose to early.

If the newer brothers pan out like the older ones, they'll be paving the way for 1,000 rushers in no time.

Duke was soo close this year, playing only 7 1/2 games, had 920 rushing yards.
Posted by: 30CINCO | January 27, 2014 at 11:06 AM
UMIKE I get the idea. The problem is.. We all know South Florida is a hot bed. We also know, the primadonna culture created.
You start offering too many kids you don't want and pushing them out before NSD..
You create a serious rift..
We don't have that type of clout right now. You have to be winning things before you do that. ala... Alabama, FSU, Auburn.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 27, 2014 at 11:06 AM
"Duke was soo close this year, playing only 7 1/2 games, had 920 rushing yards."
The silver lining is that multiple folks from this site have told me that it is extremely reasonable to expect a fully healthy Duke Johnson in 2014. Pain may be an issue, though.
