Over the last 5 to 10 years the college football recruiting process of high school athletes has gone beyond the ridiculous, moved right passed the absurd and has graduated into the category of just plain dumb.
The fact that mature, intelligent, stable and otherwise grown men would follow these high school kids' every move, tolerate the constant "flips" of their commitments from one University to another and endure the now infamous "hat game" on National Signing Day is, well for a better word, dumber.
But it is what it is and we all know that the coverage of the recruiting process every Winter has expanded exponentially (Note to recruits: That means "like a whole lot") in recent years to where it has become as important, no make that more important, to many college football fans as the actually football games played on the field each Fall.
Welcome to the world of dumb and dumber.
So, to keep up with the crowd and in our continuing effort to remain relevant on today's college football scene, here at Canespace we too will provide you all of the exciting "wall-to-wall coverage" of National Signing Day once again this year on the first Wednesday in February.
Our recruiting gurus here at Canespace, OhioCane and UMike, will bring you up to the minute updates so you can instantly know which highly ranked recruits Miami head Coach Al Golden "landed" (whoo-hoo, they are great!) and which ones "got away" (Boo, they suck anyway!).
The reasons and rationalization for the 2014 recruiting haul will shortly follow. Then there will most certainly be much angst, joy, anger and gnashing of the teeth that will be punctuated by some really dumb things being said by usually reasonable, generally intelligent people on the Internet about how "dumb some of these kids are" or how "the recruiting process keeps getting dumber".
We think that you will be very encouraged to know that there are only nine days to go until dumb meets dumber and NSD 2014 takes place (Read: Thank God it is finally over).
Then we will wait a year to do it all over again with great predictability.
In between there will be some football games that are played.
But hey, who really cares about that anyway?
so let me get this straight:
Tim Irvin is the nephew and he plays in FLHS
Michael Irvin Jr. the son plays in TXHS
Tim and Michael were never on the same team? or did Tim move to FL?

Da U N Houston, even if Ice does come, I still don't see us taking Bethel back... especially since JC Jackson is interested. And who knows, we may get a commitment from Patrick Porter this weekend, I actually like Him better than Bethel.
And honestly, I think we pulled Bethel's offer.

Powell has had plenty of time to rehearse a good come back for the feed my family line. We're talking about the SEC, cheating is an artfrom there and in that league if you're not doing it, you're not trying. Even Vandy is starting to get on board.

But still the funny thing is.. despite how horrible our D is, our O was just as bad.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 27, 2014 at 03:50 PM
No. It wasn't. It was significantly better.
In scoring/yardage, the D was 65th/89th. The O was 33rd/48th.
Was that good enough? No. Was it 'just as bad'? Only if your command of English (or perhaps math) is deeply flawed.

Problem with our offense in my opinion was the big plays helped overshadow way too many inconsistent performances.
We'd have a ton of 3 and outs then hit a 65 yd td.
Nothing wrong against some teams but when you're up against good teams you have to put together sustained drives.
Those were few and far between when we really needed them.

Ariz:
Not enough for The Work and not necessarily a ton of new info, but I got more confirmation on a few things today -
**Lamont Gaillard will be here this weekend and Miami feels like he is flippable.
**Good chance Scarborough makes it for the official visit this upcoming weekend. No guarantees, but his unofficial was not just a get-away.
**Still no worries about Demetrius Jackson from Miami's side.
**Kaaya has given Miami no indications that he won't be at Miami.
**Almost not worth mentioning Valentine to Miami fans at this point...LSU
**Trending up with JC Jackson.
**Miami believes that Chad Thomas will stick, but look for them to turn up the heat in the coming days. They know that the FSU visit made an impression on him.
**As of right now, it looks like Lenius will be a part of this class.
**Miami is very much in it for Ross. Don't know if they lead, but his interest is extremely real especially after last weekend.
**They aren't recruiting any "back-up plan" types at this stage. The only prospects they are legitimately talking to are legit Miami kids.

Defenses are bad because they are bad, not because of ST, or the cloud, or anything else. Its like a ever changing cycle of excuses for No'D. Last year at Duke and UVA we put up 52 and 40 points, at times scoring TDs off long drives. Our D turn around and allowed the opposition to walk right down the field. Golden rolled out the youth excuses and how much he made the decision to outscore the opposition. This year the youth excuses cant really be use, its because the offense wont stay on the field. Its al bull, not partially, 100% bull.
Our offense were simply terrible under Shannon, time and time again they put our D in ba positions....never have they sunk to the levels we have reached here. For christ sakes we had Patrick Nix for 2 years, Kirby Freeman as a starter and a punter for a WR and our OL was in pretty bad shape....like really bad. Like no talent. Our D had alot of bad performances under Shannon but never the weekly record setting performances by every QB we see now. Stop making excuses, for us to blame anything that the D for the D problems is excuses. Thats how i see it. I don't hear anyone saying Morris was Pressing because our D cant stop traffic in cops uniform.
Does anyone remember the Duke, VT game from this year? Who won the game? Duke offense could not move the ball....in anyway, their offense was simply atrocious. Did their D lay down? No they bamboozled Logan Thomas in Blacksburg. You no why?....because it their job, no matter what the offense does. And they have a competent DC who figured out how to stop VT's putrid offense, something we have failed to do in 2/3 years.
We have had all type of issues on and off the field, but none of it can explain the historic atrocity that is our defense...none of it. In the real world if u reach work late, or fall asleep on the job, u usually get fired. No one care that u have 4 kids or u have to stay up late cooking dinner or cleaning up or running errands or dropping your kids off at school. You get the job done or you're fired.
Before a team becomes good or great, you see evidence of greatness, you see potential. Under Fisch we had shown we were about to take off offensively. I have not seen any sign of anything from No'D. Everybody thats defending him whether with facts or not, is really wishful thinking right now. And do not mention Temple. If u go to sign a contract as a football player and you bring up your stats from 3 years before they would probably cut you.
Remember folks, we are not here defending or arguing why Miami is not great or why we cant be average. People are here actually defending and making excuses as to why its ok to be this bad! I have never seen this
Posted by: Jiggafras | January 27, 2014 at 10:58 PM
I thought the same thing about Walton transferring indicates the "Ice" is leaving.
I think Ice left UM for two reasons (Golden wanted him to stay)
1. He wanted to coach Treon his youngest son through highschool
2. He wanted to help Tim Jr. get situated. He can leave and Tim Jr. will become the next Head Coach at BTW.
So now he can get a spot back at UM. Might get Treon on board too.

YUP!
And you know what, reflecting on some comments Golden has made about the defense..."Bend don't break"..."We can't get pressure with the front 4". That's QUITTER! talk. He might as well just say, that He's gonna concede 35 points to the other team, and play catch up. I was at the FSU game, the "defense" didn't even PUT UP A FIGHT!
Posted by: CaneRock | January 27, 2014 at 11:23 PM
And really, Golden can't reconcile "bend don't break"..."can't get pressure with the front 4"...with all those garbage ass stats that He was spewing on WQAM. He can't reconcile those stats with what I saw at the FSU game...He really can't.

Posted by: Hassan | January 27, 2014 at 11:36 PM
CR, Gaillard is not a Plan B. We were recruiting this kid and taking his commitment regardless who was coming to UM. He's been committed to UGA and apparently isn't a fan of Pruitt and his DL coach there he was really connected to got fired so he may flip.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 27, 2014 at 11:45 PM
Bo Scarbrough to UM is trending upward. If he visits this weekend like it's being reported, we've got a real shot.
If U haven't seen this kid play, go watch. 6'2, 230 and doesn't just "run over people", but can. He's a faster, more agile Gus Edwards. "Freak" is a good word to use considering his age/size.

Ohio_Cane, Scarborough is in the same league as Fournette. Even Weinke said..."He can go to an NFL training camp, and not blink an eye."
Posted by: CaneRock | January 28, 2014 at 12:00 AM
Yep. I wouldn't put him with Fournette, but there are similar comparisons. Fournette could go to the NFL right now. This kid needs a year or 2, but he'll be a starter there one day. 1st round pick in a few years if he continues to develop his game
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 28, 2014 at 12:09 AM
Thank heavens that these HS players can't jump straight to the NFL. It makes CF so much better.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | January 28, 2014 at 12:10 AM
Bama, is stacked at RB already with 3 5-star guys and Scarborough is verballed their? If we can flip him, we'd put him at FB and never give him the ball.
Posted by: herbieibis | January 28, 2014 at 12:13 AM
Here we go again, just like last year, trying to find another RB at the witching hour. A whole year to recruit and evaluate and it's down to 3 guys, Scarborough is a prayer, McKnight is down to us, So. Miss & mighty Louisiana Laffaytte, And Solomon Hunter, is being recruited by power house Sam Houston St. & Houston Baptist. This should never happen but this is 2 years in a row. I'm sure there are plenty of capable alternate Rb's in the State of Florida but we have some how by-passed them all and I'm not even counting Scarborough. You want to know why we don't have depth of talent, well here is a good reason, Geeze!
Posted by: herbieibis | January 28, 2014 at 12:27 AM
Fournette might be better, but Scarborough is FREAKIER! Not only can He tote the rock, but the kid has some MITTS! You rarely ever see a kid that's a 5* TE, and a 5* RB all rolled into one...SCARY!
Posted by: CaneRock | January 28, 2014 at 01:24 AM
CSM...U are 100% correct. FSU fans I know VERY well wanted Fisher gone from FSU before this past season. And I mean GONE!

Be negative about Golden and hope he's gone and he'll eventually win the Ship!!!
Posted by: WWIN | January 28, 2014 at 01:39 AM
Again, one day a recruit will either expose on smart phone video the enhanced Recruiting, or a friend will. It will bust out on social media and will be a huge story.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 28, 2014 at 01:47 AM
Bama is stacked at RB for a reason. Ingram, Richardson, Lacey, next is Yeldon and Henry. All getting/will be getting paid on Sundays. Plus they are paying players, as far as we know, we are not. Scarborough will get touches anywhere he chooses to commit to. Scarborough is a freak as O_C said. I will be shocked if we land him, but super happy. Still hoping we get Valentine and Jackson and Harris as I feel like they are guys we're supposed to get. I'd take Jackson over Bethel any day. But Bethel might be really good in the right system. Scarborough would take the sting out of Powell, Cook and Michel a lot.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | January 28, 2014 at 02:37 AM
WW,
That's funny and I think true. Diamonds are made under intense pressure. I like that people are putting pressure on him as he's yet to deliver, but the Florida win makes me really happy. Ultimately, Golden would be golden had he fired Marky No'D after the season, but Golden decided that he's the smartest guy in the room and that BFFs come before winning. He deserves all of his heat for sponsoring and making excuses for his DC. Then he flirted with Penn State on top of it. It kills me when people act like he's done us a miracle job here. He's had moments where you can see greatness and moments where you can see complete failure. He's learning on the job. The admin is cool with it, they just want to go bowling and graduate players, so Golden will never get pressure from them to be great. It has to come from former players (who are starting to question him) and the fans.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | January 28, 2014 at 02:46 AM
Jiggafras,
That kind of talk makes me think you're a Hurricanes fan, not just an Al Golden fan. You nailed it in your post. Very well written my friend.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | January 28, 2014 at 02:51 AM
Go Canes you are right about the offense, the big plays for sure hid much of the problems with Morris and his inconsistancies. Plus the play calling was very questionable. Like Duke up the middle on short yardage when you have Gus and Hagens on the sidelines. Waiting to get Walford involved. Bubble screen after bubble screen. We will know more about James Coley next year, as of right now consider me unimpressed. Whoever the starting QB is next year will have plenty of weapons. Duke, Gus, Coley, Waters, Dorsett & Walford. But they need a commander. A guy that demands more and leads them in preperation and on the field. I don't think Olsen has that makeup in him. Not sure about Williams. There is no reason why this team should be so awful on 3rd down next year, really they should have been much better in 2013.
