The Game
Miami faces a pair of nationally-ranked opponents this week, matching up with No. 18 Duke on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., then No. 2 Syracuse Saturday at 1 p.m., both at the BankUnited Center.
The Series
Miami is 4-16 in the all-time series against Duke, which dates back to the 1962-63 season, but 2-1 since the arrival of Coach Larrañaga. The Canes are 3-6 against the Blue Devils at home, 0-2 at neutral sites and 1-8 on the road. Duke won the last matchup against Miami, defeating the Canes, 79-76, on March 2, 2013 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. UM won the previous two meetings, at Cameron Indoor Stadium in 2012 and in Coral Gables in 2013.
The Broadcasts
Catch the game on ESPN2 with Bob Wischusen and Dick Vitale making the call. Also check out the game on 560 WQAM Radio with Joe Zagacki, the Voice of the Hurricanes, and on 90.5 WVUM, Miami’s student station.
The Coach
Head coach Jim Larrañaga has a 529-361 overall record in his 30th season as a head coach. He is 59-27 in his third season at the University of Miami.
Coach L vs. The ACC
Coach Larrañaga has .500 or above winning percentage against all 11 returning ACC schools, and is 0-1 against the newcomers. Notably, Coach L is 6-3 combined against Duke and North Carolina.
Larrañaga and Krzyzewski
Miami coach Jim Larrañaga and Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski are two of four ACC coaches with a Final Four appearance to his credit. At George Mason, Larrañaga took the 2006 Patriots to the Final Four. Larrañaga and Krzyzewski are two of four active ACC coaches with 500 or more wins. Larrañaga and Mike Krzyzewski have both won the following coach of the year awards: Naismith, AP and ACC.
Stifling D by the Hurricanes
After playing man-to-man defense 95 percent of the time in his first 40 years of coaching, Jim Larrañaga’s team is now playing zone 95 percent of the game. With the zone, Miami has held its last 11 opponents to less than 70 points, and only two teams overall this season have scored more than 70 points on the Canes (80-Georgia Southern, 71-George Washington). Prior to the game against Florida State, UM held five-straight opponents to fewer than 60 points.

Because it's so dead here, I checked out some recruiting stuff (I know, funny).
From a sheer numbers sake, it could be a lot worse.
The six enrolled on campus play very functional roles. From Hurns to Berrios, Linder & Susan's Man to Darling & McDermott, Gaines to Young, and Green to Harris... it looks like some symmetry is starting to form, specifically on offense. Add in Yearby helping and possibly playing immediately and the recruiting "scheme" seems really solid.
Defensive line (specifically tackle) is a terrible issue, however. Before the "it couldn't get worse" (I was thinking the same thing), three of the rotating have graduated. None of the names really impress me. Hamilton's been too injured to contribute, Chickillo hit a wall after his freshman year, and the rest... meh. Add in D'Onofrio's coaching, and let the puke commence.
AQM showed flashes of brilliance, but he needs about 20 more pounds to get effective. At least he didn't hit his ceiling.
I am no recruiting expert, nor do I like it (so correct me if I'm wrong). But the 2014's seem extremely productive in comparison to classes past. If the DL's have any talent and drive at all, they should start game 1.
As bad as the DL is, I really love the symmetry at QB. We went from Stephen Morris (and only Stephen Morris) to a bunch of QB's. Though I fully expect Ryan Williams! to start (barring injury), the backups are really mean. Olsen is highly decorated with UM blood, and we nabbed the first or second best QB from CA (Kaaya). Crow and Rosier thrown in, and we've got a true competition.
Coley will be judged this year with the production of his QB. He may not be a miracle man like Fisch (see Jacory Harris), but efficient is enough to make the offense hum.
Don't forget that we have some redshirt freshmen who will probably see the field (Knighton, Odogwu, Lewis).
We need one of these freshmen to step up on defense in spite of the coaching. Any ideas who?

Yes you can I teach mine these things all the time...you can do it you can succeed.

Free article from 247:
Al Golden stops by OVIEDO (FL) this morning along with RBs coach Hurlie Brown.
Few schools in Central Florida or the whole state are as loaded with Division 1 talent as the Lions. In 2014 alone they have two Division 1 commits in defensive end Tyree Owens (West Virginia) and athlete Chris Davis (Central Florida).
The 2015 class could have up to seven D. 1 guys. Already four of them have Division 1 offers. Leading the way is Jurrell Green, the nation’s No. 40 running back. Cincinnati, Louisville, Massachusetts, Mississippi State and Western Kentucky have offered. Alabama, Oregon, Florida, East Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina State are showing interest.
The 5-foot-8, 198-pounder has a Top 4 in order of Louisville, Cincinnati, Central Florida and Oregon. Louisville offering first gives them an advantage but his real favorite is Central Florida. Look for the offers to multiply soon for the bowling ball back.
Cornerback Terry Howard, Jr. picked up his first offer last week from Wisconsin. Right now he lists the Badgers as his favorite. The three-star recruit is hoping for offers from West Virginia, South Florida and Cincinnati.
Justin ‘Jett’ Spencer could play defensive back or receiver in college. Mississippi State and Cincinnati have offered. Connecticut, Indiana, Ohio and Georgia are showing his interest.
Spencer favors Florida and Florida State, hoping for offers from both, and likes Cincinnati and Mississippi State as his early Top 2. Strong safety/weakside linebacker prospect Jarvis Green (5-11, 191) may have as good of early junior film as anyone on this loaded team. Florida State, East Carolina, Arkansas and Georgia are showing interest. It won’t be long before offers come his way once schools evaluate his new video.
Offensive guard/nose guard Alec Shriner has a Massachusetts offer. He won MVP for offensive linemen at the West Virginia camp this summer. Wake Forest and Duke are also showing interest in the 6-foot-4, 282-pounder. At left tackle, Oviedo recently welcomed in a transfer from Oviedo (FL) The Master’s Academy in Colton Sander, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound junior that’s raw but has a super frame.
Look for him and wideout Malcolm Bryant (6-2, 200) to pick up interest this winter and next spring.
In 2016, the two names to watch are quarterback Nick Carbone (6-0, 160) and slot receiver/running back Kyle Panagiotou (5-9, 167).

Miami Football Recruiting: Why Canes Need Travonte Valentine to Commit
Miami Hurricanes' coaches continue pounding the recruiting trail with the dead period over and national signing day just over two weeks out. A quality class has been in the works—once reaching 30 verbal commitments but having since backslid to 26 as intentions and circumstances have changed for some.
Four-star defensive tackle Travonte Valentine committed to the Hurricanes last July and remained solid until early January when Miami's Al Golden was mentioned for the Penn State head coaching vacancy.
Who wil will the services of Travonte Valentine on "signing day" next month?
Miami Hurricanes LSU Tigers Texas Longhorns Other Submit Vote vote to see results
Valentine had LSU on his short list as early as October, and the 6'5", 322-pounder made a decision in December to visit Baton Rouge late January—causing even more panic in Coral Gables after Valentine decommitted from Miami after "Goldengate."
A silver lining for "The U" came soon thereafter in the form of Valentine's high school coach Mike Tunsil, who spoke candidly with Manny Navarro at the Miami Herald regarding his player's heart for the hometown program.
"Travonte just wants security," said Tunsil, a few days into the new year. "He's been saying UM for a long time. He loves UM. But for Coach Golden to go interview for another job was unsettling."
Tunsil went on to explain that Valentine requested a sit-down with Golden in order to "make sure everyone is on the same page." The Hialeah Champagnat head coach also explained that his talented tackle still envisions playing for the University of Miami, welcomes smaller-sized classes and likes the idea of remaining close to local family.
With coaches finally able to go full-bore again on the recruiting front, Miami has understandably been all over Valentine, proving he's a top priority.
Mark D'Onofrio (defensive coordinator), Jethro Franklin (defensive line) and Hurlie Brown (running backs) visited the tackle late last week, which Valentine said helped the overall process, according to the Miami Herald's Safid Deen.
[Texas] and LSU looking good, but Miami—after they talked to me Thursday—it went well. The coaching staff, everybody they came over and talked to me. It was a good talk, and I was satisfied with what they were telling me, and they did a good job.
While Golden and staff work tirelessly to reel in a top-flight class, Valentine is most certainly one of three must-have players for the Hurricanes this February.
Five-star defensive end Chad Thomas is a foundation-laying prospect, while 4-star quarterback Brad Kaaya can bring stability to a position that's been a question mark for over a decade. Both appear solidly committed to Miami and are guaranteed difference-makers, but Valentine represents an even greater need simply based on where he'll line up the next few years.
247Sports.com
The addition of defensive end Chad Thomas (pictured) with Travonte Valentine would be lethal for Miami's defensive line.
"The U" has always been know for speedy running backs, flashy receivers, aggressive linebackers and hard-hitting safeties—but mammoth defensive tackles are as important to the Canes as a heady quarterback under center.
The "Decade of Dominance" era produced greats like Jerome Brown, Russell Maryland and Cortez Kennedy, while the next generation had guys like Warren Sapp wreaking havoc. Most recently, Damione Lewis and Vince Wilfork played that necessary role for the Hurricanes.
Since then, though, almost a 10-year void for Miami regarding a next-level lineman ready to rise up.
"The U" took a big depth-related hit two years back, losing defensive tackles Marcus Forston, Adewale Ojomo, Micanor Regis and Olivier Vernon after Golden's first season. This past year Miami parted ways with Curtis Porter, Luther Robinson and one-year transfer Justin Renfrow, leaving another huge defensive void for the Hurricanes to fill.
Miami is bringing in junior college tackles Michael Wyche and Calvin Huertelou—both of whom should see immediate playing time—but neither will be showing up as decorated as Valentine, who finished his senior season with 85 tackles (31.5 for loss) and 16 sacks and is nationally ranked third-best at his position.
While Valentine is a crown-jewel-type recruit for the Hurricanes, the defensive tackle has a handful of can't-miss options regarding his playing future. Outside of Miami and LSU both recruiting him aggressively, Valentine has over two dozen big-time offers and has shown interest in Texas, listing the Longhorns, Tigers and Hurricanes as his top three.
Still, James Smith of the New Orleans-based Times-Picayune downplayed Valentine's unofficial visit to Miami this past weekend, going as far as stating the South Florida product is now LSU's to lose.
The 6-3, 338-pound behemoth is set to visit the Tigers on January 24 in what could be the end of his recruitment. He took an unofficial to Miami this past weekend, but as they pressured him for a commitment, he made it known that he wasn't in a position to give them one at that time. In fact, we have learned that Miami trails LSU significantly at this stage of the process with those close to him calling it a done deal for the Tigers. As we have all learned this recruiting cycle, there is no such thing. However, LSU appears to be in great shape at this time.
While the Tigers have reason to feel confident, the Hurricanes truly remain Valentine's first love. Miami is the hometown team and earned the local star's pledge early in the process for a reason—where it remained unwavering for half-a-year.
Things got mildly rocky in the wake of Golden's back-and-forth with his alma mater, but fences are being mended—plus, the Hurricanes do get Valentine's ear after the Tigers.
The defensive tackle will visit Baton Rouge next weekend but is spending his final recruiting experience in Coral Gables on January 31—affording Golden and staff one last opportunity to close strong, keeping the big man home and scoring the biggest win this program has seen since upsetting Florida last fall.

Barry Jackson:
### UM, which continues to explore adding a big-bodied running back, on Tuesday visited 6-3, 212-pound Solomon Hunter, according to Hunter. He's a two-star prospect who, according to rivals.com, has offers only from Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist but has drawn interest from several major schools.... UM also started recruiting another two-star prospect this week: Mississippi-based defensive end Darrius Liggins, a former Mississippi State oral commitment who had eight sacks last season. He told canesport.com that Miami asked him to visit late this month but Liggins isn't sure; he first wants to see how his visit to Louisiana-Lafeyette goes.

I would keep after Valentine, but looks like he is LSU bound. In theory I cannot blame him. They are a big program, and the exposure the scheme the dynamic the competition.....its where the big names go. We have some good kids coming.....I think the offense will get better....the D is my concern. The schemes laid back approach...on both sides of the ball concern me. I have never seen a great team that laid back.
People in the Montana Rice 49er year thought they were pretty boys....in ways yes...never was a fan. However, they came after you on both sides....they ran the damn ball, used the TE and passed all together....that D wouls smack your ass. Not a red and gold guy, media hype joe and jerry show, Bill Walsh mr laid back guy....the perception the media gave....I loved their attack....their desire to punish you the want and urgency of winning....that's awesome. AG and Co.....don't squeeze the Charmin approach.....soft o and d....sweet and mellow little u to wipe your little fanny with....I hate that!!!!
I'd love to have them up here in this shit today....believe it or not....we are gonna throw it around about 2 at the park....my guys are calling me to come out there.....they know it keeps them on their toes....TOUGH PANTHERS.....soft u.....AG could learn from us country folks....get them boys tough and mean not soft and sweet!!!!

Forget SEC....Or any other.
You want to be special and be part of building something GREAT.
Bring your talent to South Beach Baby.
110% AGREE! Build defense from the MIDDLE out. DT, MLB, SS!
Posted by: LA3 | January 22, 2014 at 12:07 PM
I want to be clear about "Forget SEC"...
Right now DEF is dead in SEC.
And a GREAT DT will just be "another 4* or 5*" on team LOADED with talent.
IF they come to the U, then they will be part of rebuilding and doing something GREAT. They could be one or 4 or 5 guys that get mentioned EVERY TIME reporters talk about the U the next 3 or 4 years.
And that is SPECIAL!!!! That gets you to the NFL!!!!
You want to be part of the U! Or just another face in the crowd?!!!!!

They're not on very much here either, and the game times are atrocious for me. I care, hope they do well, but don't expect anything from this team to be perfectly honest. If we are above .500 it would be a success, and knowing we are likely going to struggle makes it hard to get excited.

Valentine is a beast! In my view, Valentine is one of the best DTs to come out of south Florida in a while. You watch him play and its not fair how he moves for a guy his size. Valentine just jumps out at you in terms of talent. Put him in the mix with the rest of that incoming class, and you have one of the best defenses in the country - even with D'No.
I can only comment on the recruits from Florida that I have seen play live, and I immediately concluded early in the 2013 HS season that Golden and his staff did a great job of evaluating talent early on - regardless of star ratings. I like their three stars and their five stars.
As good as the talent in South Florida and Florida has been, I think it is actually improving (hard to believe) and UM will not get them all - I just want Golden to do what he is doing and that is to get most of the best Florida/So. Florida recruits, pick off a few recruits from other parts of the country. I would also like to see Golden develop all of them with good coaching once they arrive. If UM can do that, they will be a powerhouse once again.

I can remember Sapp, Wilfork, Maryland, Kennedy on the DL. They were truely uncontrollable, and dominated the center of the field. Teams were forced to scheme plays away from them, double teams etc.
A player like that or two makes a huge difference
Posted by: Account Deleted | January 22, 2014 at 12:56 PM
Long time and Big windy,
great point!!! It is critical to have that big push in the middle....more important right at the football. C-QB handle it every play....the more chaos confusion pressure and ......horror and moral terror Apocalypse Now football you can put in their face, the better. You get the big guys needing doubles causing problems etc.....it makes them very nervous and turnover prone. Then lay some Tatumizers on them...look out. That's why the 46 can be effective.....you got pressure by athletes right at the ball and the 2 guys who handle it!!!!!

But, really....VT won't dumb down to DNO. He likes to blow things up too much....No taming that cat.
And he WILL make others around him much BETTER! MUCH MUCH MUCH better.
But don't sleep on Moten!
We have A LOT of Talent coming in...only mention VT because he is 50/50.
