SOUP

Actually Golden just called, thanked me for my loyalty to the process and said he would retain my services for the next 2 years or til OGV's head explodes!

The OGV head blew up at 6 pm today.

U are clean and clear for the next few years!

SOUP,

Are you hearing anything about the defensive staff and/or scheme?

Carl

From Canesport....

"CaneSport had previously reported that Golden expected the deal finalized today. But when rumors of the Munchak flirtation circulated Sunday morning, sources told CaneSport that Golden informed Penn State that he wanted a contract to sign today. When it didn't happen by 4 p.m. - with pressure growing throughout South Florida - he backed out of the deal."

So, when the Sun comes up tomorrow, the deal could be back on the table ? If this guy, after his statement today, opens himself back up for the job when Penn St. is done interviewing, he'll never be able to step foot in S. Fla. again without Police protection.

Crazier things have happened... Saban 2.0 ?

"There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami. While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position. We are eager to welcome our student athletes back to campus next week and visit with prospective student-athletes and their families beginning January 15."

Nowhere in there does he say, "I'm 100% commited to Miami for the duration of my contract." That is a paperthin statement. And what he said today at 4pm can change tomorrow at 4pm? If Louisville called and ask permission for an interview, whould Golden then be a "candidate for another position" because things change ? The other Penn St. candidates don't get offered and they come calling again? Man this guy is digging himself deeper holes that he might never get out of.

SOUP

Are you hearing anything about the defensive staff and/or scheme?

Yeah, I hear that it sucks.

Any other questions?

Hassan

I have been here the longest and I get no position...

SOUP

Hassy...U are undercover, how can I assign U an official position? LOL

HawaiiCane

This flirtation thing hurt him tremendously! I'm not supporting Golden. He should have gone. I will look back on this as the moment Miami had the chance to put themselves back in the national picture with at least 3 available and viable coaching candidates, especially Butch Davis that could guide The U! And whether you like it or not he made 'The U'! Think about it, on the 2001 team there were 17 future first round draft pics... all were Butch Davis recruits while Miami was finishing NCAA sanctions. They were anywhere from 5 star to 3 star recruits (see Ed Reed). Davis wanted to be here again by all accounts, where as Golden Showers put forth an ultimatum that wasn't met for a new position and came running back to his position while keeping D'No here as well.

raizecane

if he was 100 percent committed to the U, he should never have agreed to an interview with PSU (that is if he actually did have an interview).

I hope someone asks him that question tomorrow.

SOUP

Can I get some quiet time?

Dude on a Pale Horse

2014, the year we find how far can Duke Johnson carry Al Golden?

herbieibis

Yeah, Al called me all the way from unhappy Valley and since I bitched so much about the D-Line, he has reassigned Jethro and now it's my job, I told him I didn't want it, I wanted to be the coordinator, he said like hell, as long as Mark is here it's his job. I said which Mark, that's my first name too, he then said Denofrio and I said thank god, everybody hates him!

Surfercane

I'm surprised Penn St did not hire him "yet"

Surfercane

Time to move forward??

Re: other topics, anyone notice Watkins appears to be heading to the NFL:

http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/clemson-sammy-watkins-to-enter-nfl-draft-010514

I guess he felt left out by being in the wrong division to burn Cane defenses routinely.

j.w.

Hawaii is right about the flirtation. He better pull off his favorite Bill Clinton/ Ronald Reagan (appeasing both sides :)) tomorrow, and give the presser of his life, or it will get ugly. Best way to handle it is to admit whatever interest he had, apologize for any ill will his actions may have created (not an admission, but we'll all get it), then tell the world why he came to his senses and realized he's got it great here. Then it's time to win. People have done much, much worse than this and been forgiven, for coaches it's always been a put up or shut up job, but the good will and honeymoon days are over here.

Sarasota 'cane

If I were Al I would still go if PSU called now more than ever. I think PSU told him they were going to wait till next week and he knew it would be a full scale revolt by then so he stopped the bleeding today.
Al is obviously not PSU's first choice but I guess it's still possible they could reach out to Al again once the process is completed if they still haven't chosen their new coach. The PR disaster for Al and Blake is not going away. Certainly not when Butch Davis himself chimes in that he would like his job back.
Al's "one and done" as far as I'm concerned.

Sure there was radio silence for 36 hours or so but no one for sure knew when the meetings were taking place. And no one really knows what was said and what happened in those meetings. It is all rumors and speculation.

The smart move for Miami was for him to come back. It saves the recruiting class and he will continue to build the program.

Listen I like Golden but not 100% sure he is a great coach. He has at least another year or two to prove himself. If I see the team regresses even more next year then I will change my tune.

There It Is right there!

Mia Chi 'Cane '98

Some of you are delusional with your coaching choices. I like Butch but I was there during the worst years 95-98. I know the people who flew the banner that Saturday afternoon. How many of you were pissed at him when he left in 2000? How many of you felt betrayed by him. Now all is forgotten? I am not sure he could catch lightening in bottle twice.

Just because someone has Miami ties and is a coach don't assume they want to come back and will be any good.

Sarasota 'cane

I to went through the bad years with Butch and saw what he was capable of. He was doing it again at UNC before the NCAA derailed the program and he would do it again at UM with South Florida's endless talent pool.
I was never a fan of Butch's game day style compared to some of his predecessors but he would assemble coordinators that are 10 times better than what we have and he's also a 10 times better coach then what we currently have.
If Al is our coach then so be it, but it sucks knowing that the architect of the greatest Hurricane team of all time is interested in returning and all we can do is nada.

Sarasota 'cane

And Butch said yesterday to Susan Miller that he was interested in the UM job if it were available so this isn't just some pipe dream we all thought of yesterday to make ourselves feel better. Butch threw his hat in the fray when he thought Al was leaving.

Mia Chi 'Cane '98

Sota-

I agree with you on Butch.

My point was there are other good coaching candidates out there that do not have ties to miami.

Mia Chi 'Cane '98

After what Butch did to the school in 2000 and what happened at unc under his watch I just could not see this administration hiring him. But that is just my opinion.

orange 'n green in the vein

Well, are we all prepared for the very worst day of the year today?

orange 'n green in the vein

Butch Davis has a letter of recommendation from the NCAA clearing him of any and all responsibility for the scandal at his former employer's school MCC98.

The NCAA says he didn't do anything to break any rules. Not one, not one instance. Stop associating him with the institutional corruption there that existed for years before he was hired there.

Sarasota 'cane

The fans and admin were as much at fault for Butch leaving back then. If he can forgive then I can. Kinda moot now but Al did leave open ever so slightly with his statement that this is not over. He said he was "not being considered" and not that he would never take the PSU job. I think he still wants it but had to stop the bleeding. We won't know until they give the job to him or someone else.
Anyway I didn't mean to snap but I wanted a new coach the minute Al opened up the possibility. I had no idea that Butch was going to be interested.

Dude on a Pale Horse

The Dude: What are the chances that a fan like me and a coach like you could somehow get Al Golden to leave so you could coach the team?

Butch Davis: I'd say about 1 in a million.

The Dude: So you're telling me there's a chance!

listening to Golden on QAM and don't expect any changes at the D Cord position.

He listed all the stats and how they improved nationally in almost all categories on the defensive side of the ball.

Basically said he never considered the Penn State job. Not sure how that can be if Penn State came down to interview him.

raizecane

Golden said biggest concerns on offense is 3rd down conversions and time of possession. Feels they need to be much better in this area. 3rd down issue related to not doing well on first down.

So is Coley on the hot seat????

Al-Pa Day?

roachcane77

Listening LIVE to Golden right now, and all he's doing at the moment is talking "continuity."

He spouted all of the "rises" in defenses stats. He was obviously prepared, (with paper in front of him), to defend his "BFF."

He's now talking about all of the defensive players returning, and how much more experience they have now. Everything's on a positive upward trend.

Talking about O now. How bad 3rd down conversions are and poor time of possession.

Again, spouting stats and national ranking in each category, the positives… blah, blah, blah.

Same thing with Special Teams… spouting positive stats…

Asked directly about D'No. He said "I'm responsible," then starting talking about improvements since 2011. We are NOT where we want to be… we are going to continue to get better. It's a positive trend, he likes the direction we're going...

Continuity is more important than change… THAT about says it all.

Did not hear about a single "change," either in coaches or philosophy.

raizecane

Rose asked about D'no and Golden said he is responsible from coaching to players. Likes the way the program is going but they are NOT where they want to be….. DUH???????

UMike

Golden just made me lose A LOT of faith in him with his interview this morning. Does he think were all dumb children or something??? All he did was talk about the D stats and how they improved, but he didnt mention that we changed Notre Dame and KSU for Savannah State & FAU. He even said the defense was on a "positive trend" WTF!!!!!! Maybe because we havent played another game. How can a D that gave up 500 yards in the last games be on a positive trend. And then to top it off he ragged on the O.

D-No is staying and Golden is going to keep talking and talking and talking (without wining) until he is gone. He is a salesman.

UMike

BTW, Kaaya looked very good in his All-Star game last night.

UMike

Also... it appears Miami will go another year without an elite DT. And no Moten is not elite or the same caliber as Valentine. There are ZERO elite DT's in South Florida next year neither.

UMike

travonte valentine ‏@traveeey99
In case the U fans aint read things all the way , yes Im decommiting until this coaching situation is done until then sorry but im chillin!!

MAYBE...MAYBE... Golden and Coley can reel him back in, but it seems to me he was looking for a reason to decommit. I mean, he could of waited to see if Golden was even leaving.

UMike

Miami dropped all the way to 8th in the Rivals team rankings after losing Valentine.

7th on Scout
9th on 247
6th on ESPN

I know we dont NEED a top 5 class, but it shows the caliber of Valentine when your class drops that far after losing just 1 player. I hope the coaches can get him back.

Sinistercane

Go Canes

Your father Al just spouted off every defensive state known to man except for the 1 that counts "total defense" which is last in the ACC for the second year in now. When you eat dinner with Al tonight tell him that we're not stupid and stop blaming the issue on personal

Mia Chi Cane, I agree with you....

HOWEVER, the way I see it is that in this day with technology you don't stay quite about it like we won't find out!

...AND if it is your dream job, you don't hold an offer hostage and not make some sacrifices.

... AND you don't give a garbage statement about your offer solely because the flirtation didn't go your way. We knew he was a candidate, yet his statement makes it sound like he never was... shady!

...Finally, when your Donna & Co. and yourcoach stays quiet and there are 4/5 great replacements including Butch Davis, who I believe to be one of the greatest 'Canes coaches of all-time , 'throwing his hat in the ring' ... look at those who WANT to be here!!!!

I'm just tired of the talking at all levels.... some players, coaches and administration alike!

About the only place where you will find 'The U' to be their 'dream school' is on CaneSpace!

HawaiiCane

SOUP... this year's t-shirt should have the CaneSpace logo on front and 'The U is my dream school!' or 'The U will always be my dream school!' on back!!!

Canesteeler

UMike after hearing his BS this morning I have 0 respect for the man.

Even if we exchanged for SSU and FAU, statistically, we did NOT! improve! We were WORSE! against the run this year...and if He thinks we improved against the pass, well then, He's just "making a silk purse, with a sows ear"! He's worse than a salesman, He's a POLITICIAN!

1st He said "we can't be parading out there with 215 Lb LBs"...FALSE!, the best LB and defender on our team, is Denzel Perryman.

Then He said that "you can't train to your core values, you have to recruit to your core values"...uh huh...if you call stealing, and trying to sell your teammates computer back to Him, that's one HECKUVA! core value.

If you call being so drunk & high, that you can't even open your front door, that's one HECKUVA! core value.

Seriously, He needs to just STFU!

UMike

And that BS about how he was going to wait until the radio interview or press conference to tell everyone he was staying, but the speculation got to much... does he REALLY think anyone is buying that???

if ag said this. . .

"yes i was interviewed for the head coach's position at Penn State University. As you know, I was a player there, a coach there, and I have much respect for their tradition. When I took the job here at the U, I was clear to everyone that given my history at Penn State, if the job became available and the conditions were right, it would be the only job that I would leave for. I spoke with their reps. I was flattered that they would think so highly of me and what we are doing here at the U that they would consider me-- but the conditions weren't right for me, especially since we have such tremendous opportunity and work to do here at the U.

I wish Penn State well in their search. I hope they find someone who'll be there for a long time. As for me and my house-- we stand with the U plan to be with the U for a long time.

. . . then i would respect him more.

but he didn't. he quibbled. hope he's more upfront today at 12:30.

Go Canes

Everyone who thinks I'm a homer should tune into Joe Rose today. He is laying it all out exactly as it is.

I know nobody knows as much as some of the people on here, but he makes a compelling and completely accurate case for what life has really been like for this coaching staff and this program leaving up to today

dg

Sad, Sad, Sad...Golden has made some Cane fans accept being mediocre at best. Well at least I have my Saturday afternoons free. Miami sells itself to recruits. RS did not leave the cupboard bare..a number of his kids are in the league now. I guess the embarrassing bowl loss, Duke's domination, or Vtech's and every QB looking like All-Americans was not enough. Don't worry "rock-bottom" is parking right now and walking into the football facilities to claim what is his=Al Golden!

Texascane

Just glad we finally have a coach somebody else wants (Twice).

In business there is always one cardinal rule- you always listen if someone comes calling.

Had Al said from the beginning that he was not interested in the PSU job, the same people busting his chops now would be upset that he wasn't.

You don't like him as the Miami coach, I get that...just don't use the fact that he talked to PSU as a reason...you would have attacked him either way.

Posted by: Go Canes | January 06, 2014 at 09:46 AM

So are you saying we should keep No D for the sake of recruiting

UMike

Go Canes.. Jim Mora and Art Briles both came out and publicly said they were staying... so yes coaches can talk about another job, especially if they ARENT taking it lol

UMike

But my biggest issue with Golden at the moment is all that BS he was feeding us this morning.

jsy

What I can't grasp is what has golden done to receive such support and fan fare from some fans. What has he really done?

UpNorthCane27

I have always been a big Al golden supporter because he is well organized and runs a good program.

But!!! I have an issue with him and I agree with Umike, the uncertainty throughout the weekend, his piss poor radio interview performance, were all huge disappointments.

The fact that he defended his BFF and that the defense was trending upward was just a slap in all of our faces. The nerve to call out the 3rd down offense but not the defense at all is ridiculous.

AL GOLDEN listen up time to MAN UP admit you were wrong for waiting, admit there's issues on Defense and FIX it!!!!

UMike

JSY... I do believe there have been good things Golden has done, unfortunately the majority of those things seem to be off the field.

UMike

UpNorth.. yea..it was bad. He defended the D while kinds throwing the O under the buss. He just sold the stats and all but confirmed D-No is saying. I get the continuity thing, but what good does that do when it is just bad year after year lol

UMike

Joe Garcia just said the funniest thing on Twitter.. in response eto people saying Golden/D'No don't know how to use South Florida talent, he said UF and FSU run a similar scheme with South Florida talent and are elite defenses. lol

Go Canes

UMike you have absolutely NO idea what happened behind the scenes with Briles and Mora behind the scenes.

So their public statements are worthless without that knowledge.

Let me know when James Franklin issues a play by play on his weekend when someone else gets the Penn State job.

I won't hold my breath for that one.

raizecane

It is unknown whether Golden was offered the job, though Penn State beat writer Bob Flounders of the Harrisburg Patriot-News tweeted Sunday evening, “I’m told by a PSU source I trust that Al Golden was never offered the Lions’ head coaching job. Never.”.

UMike

I can say this about Golden and South Florida guys... I grew up playing football on the streets or closest park etc. all over Miami & Broward. No matter if it was in Opa-Locka, North Miami, Dania, Fort Lauderdale etc, the one thing that was always there was the emotion. South Florida kids, especially Miami kids, play with emotion, REAL SWAG, a chip on their shoulder. Every one on the field/street wants to be the best and the mouths never stop talking. Trash talking and bravado is a normal, natural part of the game for Miami kids. I think once that emotion is suppressed, it takes a toll on the play. jmo of course.

Texascane

It's not BS...what he was saying this morning is exactly what he has been saying for three years.

While a person can disagree and think he and his plan are full of crap, he's not lying. He believes in a process and he will not change.

I understand folks who disagree and think that his process is flawed, but don't ever think for a minute that he doesn't believe in it.

This guy is as transparent as can be...and has been since day one. The "process" trumps everything.

As far as coaches go, he could fire Dinofrio and dump what they have been teaching for the last three years...ask Mack Brown what firing Manny Diaz did for him.

Golden has a plan and you may not like the plan...and I certainly don't like parts of it...but until he is no longer at the "U", the plan will continue. That's about as honest as a coach can be.

UMike

Go Canes..you really need to jump off Goldens sack lol... Golden made it seem like he was never a candidate, like he was never interested.. that is all BS and you know it. neither Mora or Briles let the situation go without being checked. We lost our top recruit (behind Thomas) at a position of desperate need because Golden didnt squash the speculation. If you werent a candidate, it should of been said immediately, dont feed us that BS that you werent a candidate and ACT like you knew all along you were staying.

UMike

Texas, we can also ask Butch Davis what firing his DC did for him lol

UMike

Texas, whatver D'No has been teaching the last 3 years hasnt been working... well unless you play high school teams lol
