High expectations can lead to unrealized goals which often causes frustration and disappointment. Low expectations are often exceeded which leads to an increased sense of optimism and well being.
So it appears that the key to happiness is to simply lower your expectations, right? To simply just wake up, breathe some fresh air and be able to see one more beautiful sunrise should make you just as happy as you can be!
A small minority of Miami Hurricane football fans appear to have given up their hopes and dreams of ever fielding a National Championship team again.
It seems clear now that they have lowered their expectations to the point where winning nine games, losing to basketball schools like Duke and getting blown out by Louisville in a meaningless bowl game in some dank, old stadium somewhere in Orlando is just fine with them.
Oh, and forget about even having a chance to beat FSU. That is just crazy!
In fact, the fans with these low expectations not only fully expect and accept it to lose 3 or 4 games a season, they embrace and defend it with great passion. They are proud, progressive, modern thinking, current day college football fans. They are the new U who don't even know "The U".
These fans have set their expectations so low that it is basically impossible to be disappointed. What makes it so completely confusing to many is that they appear to be perfectly happy in their new found "safe zone".
Trust me, there is no coach, player or any real fan of any team that plans, predicts or wants to lose any game. However, after much thought and deliberation, I have decided to completely ignore them and join the "low expectation" crowd with great reluctance and trepidation.
So, I thought I would share my new "low expectation" goals for 2014:
- If Miami wins one game, any game,by one point, I will be happy.
- If at least some people show up for home games I will be happy.
- If Miami scores less than 10 points a game I will still be happy.
- If UM allows over 30 points a game I will also be happy.
- If Miami allows 500 yards a game on defense I will be happy.
- If the UM goes three-and-out on every possession I will be happy.
- If the sun shines during football games I will be hot and happy.
- If it rains like crazy during football games I will be wet and happy.
- In fact, I have decided that I will just be happy to be happy.
There, I feel so much better now. In fact, I am going to start a support group for people with low expectations. I think we will start all of our meetings by introducing ourselves like this:
"Hi, my name is ______________ I have low expectations and I feel happy!
Sitting here, patiently waiting on Penn State to hire a coach. Hopefully they have to come back to Golden so we can get Butch.

Schiano head coach with Butch as DC! Now that's the winning ticket!

So funny to see Sinister wanting back a coach that went 5-6 with no bowl game in his third year but wanted Randy and Golden gone after going 9-4 in year their third years.
What an eye for coaching talent.

Golden taking the PSU job is only half the battle. A home run hire would be needed to complete the "Best January since 2002".
Butch or Schiano = Home Run!
Christobal = Not so much! :-(
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | January 08, 2014 at 05:06 PM
Butch wasn't ever going to happen. Ever.
And would you really want Schiano?
Don't you think if he had success here he'd bolt back to the pros as soon as he got a chance?
I would have loved a guy like him or Chud, but to me they would practically be a one and done.

No really, I am not kidding.

JW, you're the 1 missing the point regarding Petrino. At the end of the day its just ENTERTAINMENT!!! Louisville & the recruits Petrino will soon be getting could CARE LESS bout him cheating on his wife. If his wife has 4given him then that's all that matters. Plus I could care less if he only coaches a couple years, just as long as he leaves us in better shape than we were prior 2 his arrival.

I forgot Chud but yeah I'd take Schiano. And don't be so sure that Butch would not be considered. He has as much experience cleaning up a locker room as Golden.
The notion that Butch is "tainted" is a frickin joke. Hell Al had a couple of violations his 1st week at UM.
This is all wishful thinking anyway brought on by Al himself. I have no problem with Al looking at PSU, it's a great fit and I'd wish him well if he got the job. But what's good for the goose is good for the gander!
In a perfect world Donna would have introduced Butch as the new coach at the same presser that Al held to deny he was being considered. She would be a living legend at UM and around her peers if she pulled that off.
I do agree that if Blake were to hire a dud then we would be worse off, but not by much. Al fixed a lot of crap around here that we don't even realize, he's just not the guy to get us over the top. If we know that today, why wait till tomorrow?
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | January 08, 2014 at 05:25 PM
As much as I loathe D'Onofrio, I highly doubt Golden leaves this year unless he's flat-out fired. The speculation helped him get a raise, which is absolutely fine. Can't blame the man for wanting some more cabbage.
I CAN blame him for keeping a stooge as defensive coordinator. I like Al, I really do.
But I'm firmly out of the Golden camp and now comfortably settled into neutral because of that very decision.

I agree. We would take a much more humble Petrino in a second if we could. I could care less what a guy does on his own time. It's the "crazy" type of coach like Mike Leach that we need to stay away from imo.

Perfectly Put...Not that I am against Al but I must say his Personal Storm is bringing unwanted attention to the U.. If he leaves I am NOT shattered I look at the bright side Better Defense Immediately...I love that noone points out we were 21st in scoring Defense when Alfred and the Nittanies took over...But we all complain that Shannon left the cupboard dry..Well weren't those the same kids scoring on Defense the year before? Or we giving all that credit to the kids that left? Be Serious (as I am one of the MOST delusional ppl on this blog) I believe we go Undefeated EVERY Year without fail or good knowledge of who is with the U but I can not and will not make it seem like I stand behind this we are trending up crap...We ARE NOT.. Here's to doing better and closing the door on this Tropical Storm Alfred and Nittanies..

Alright soup! Now you don did it! I'm going to have to stand up & defend myself as I fear your article takes aim @ me & a few other bloggers. But I will let others speak for themselves.
I am more of an optimist than RCCF. I expect our team to destroy all opposition so bad, there is no chance of re-incantation after they r dead. I'm don't hate 'pussy-footers' & 'yellow belly' people/organization/team worse than OGV. We often talk about fickle south Florida fans. Worse & deep within that are spineless, fair weather, 'what have u done for me today' canes' fans.
I care about no other team success or failures but my canes. Watching the BCS, I felt like my canes can whoop both of those team, damn the Louisville debacle. I wasn't impressed with either team & I just hated them both.
What differentiates us canes fans is that some r Homosapiens & others r Neanderthals. Neanderthals care nothing but canes wining. They want to behead everyone if canes don't win, thus leaving us without a team altogether. Neanderthals ask for something & when they get it & it doesn't work, they blame the coaching staff for doing it. Neanderthals ignore the nature of the talent base in south Florida. Neanderthals ignore the obvious parity now in college football. Neanderthals ignore the resources the school has to compete. Neanderthals ignore the need to tweak strategies slightly in hope for better results. Worst of all, Neanderthals do not care if their strategy fails to bring success. Their craving is for carnage if their asinine expectations r not met. To them, burning it all down is fine. The same Neanderthals that take to the air & complain about the need for better talent turn around and insult this young men when they make one mistake on the field or slander them if they take a different path than the U, thereby making future recruits more critical of picking the U.
Us Homosapiens do not deny our canes genes that craves super human canes teams. But we control it & reconcile our primitive instincts with the good of the program. We aim to understand the barriers to our accession back to elite status. We search for the best way to get us to the promise land given all the obstacles that r faced by the canes & those that possed by the nature of big college football in our time. We support our team no matter what. We understand that our team might not live up to an Herculean cane status. And in the face of such reality, we do not exasperate our emotions & give ourselves a heart attack as a result of the psychopathic anger that posseses our Neanderthal counter parts. We r matured, problem solving. We put our emotions in check. We develop a defense mechanism need to be died hard canes fans because we understand that these kids we follow r just that. This team is still in search of its way out of the wilderness. And we have enough going on in our lives where our happiness does not depend on what 11 pre-pubescent young men fail to archive on a Saturday afternoon. We feed the volatile cane gene inside us in different ways; I for one have been a boxing enthusiast for a while. And after a loss, the punching back feels my cane wrath as I leave it battered with orange & green liquid leaks from the tear in the leather created by my 'fist of cane fury.'
If a house is burning down, do u create more chaos by screaming 'fire' or do u recognize the need for an expedited exit, while making sure there's some kind of order admist the chaos that will ensure all to make it out alive? We will find our way out of the darkness eventually. I just fear that taking the path of the Neanderthals might prolong the journey. Hope I'm wrong even if I don't get my way. Whatever state of mind we r all in, it's all about the U. And I assure u that u cannot be a cane without having that fiery 'cane DNA.'

Dennis Dunn is in his eigth year as the head football coach at Louisiana College. Overall, he has a 45-23 record in seven seasons as head coach. In his tenure at LC, Dunn has seen an amazing 93% graduation rate from his players, one of the highest such marks in the country. In 2012, Dunn's Wildcats enjoyed the finest year in program history, as they posted the first ever 8-win season in school history as well as making their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III National Playoffs.

“From a professional standpoint, I’ve never discussed any other positions. As I said yesterday I’m not a candidate. I’m excited to be here." - Al Golden on Joe Rose Monday Jan. 6, 2014. 6:30am
1,2,3 LIES ... He actually said he did NOT discuss the Penn St. job with the Penn. St. people that went to his house on Saturday, CONFIRMED, from a "Professional" standpont ? How much more Lawyer speak can it get ?
This guy is flat out lying to all our faces. And when/if Penn. St. offers/ or doesn't offer Golden, and he stays, we're suppose to forget all about that?
You fans that say yes, it's forgivable, that's your right. But Golden and his undying loyality to his BFF D.C. friend over the loyality to the University of Miami and it's overall welfare is a complete and irreparable deal breaker and game changer for this 5-figure yearly donation Cane fan.
Tell a lie and eventually you'll need to tell a second... Tell a second lie and eventually you'll need...
"“From a professional standpoint, I’ve never discussed any other positions."
So maybe the "Professional Discussions" regarding other positions begin "sooner or later" perhaps Al ?
Or maybe "at the end of the day" is the "process" you'll take huh Coach ?

Posted by: mi@mic@ne | January 08, 2014 at 05:51 PM
Ignore my last two posts... THIS is the current HC at LA-Lafayette (Mark Hudspeth):
And seemingly overnight, he reversed UL’s football fortunes, taking the Ragin’ Cajuns from nine losses in 2010 to a school-record tying nine wins in both 2011 and 2012. He is 18-8 in his two seasons, including a 10-1 record in home games and a 4-0 mark against in-state opponents.
More importantly, the Cajuns have produced in the classroom. In the five semesters under Hudspeth, the Cajuns have turned in four of the best semesters academically since grades were tracked in 1982.

No disrespect RBL but believe me when I say your last 2 post were IGNORED! lol. Mi@mic@ne, the coordinator fired from UM is supposedly Al Borges of Michigan.
Posted by: 4-Real | January 08, 2014 at 06:03 PM
Yeah, Hudspeth has a winning tradition from his days in DII/FBS whatever it was called when he was there as well, only bowl games in ULL history of the program are under him.
And he'll work cheap which as you know UM covets over everything in these negotiations when they occur.

Louisville, bum of a school, goes out and gets a top 5 CFB coach. That's a school that's committed to winning. And he's coming to the ACC. Miami will continue to be an afterthought in CFB if it doesn't change it's losing ways, fast. Petrino is a home run (re)hire.

That's what I like about these other coaches, they get it, if you're coordinators suck, they know they are sucking the head coaches lively hood right from underneath them, so they do the right thing, they fire them. The Mad hatter canned his O-Line coach, Brown canned his D- coordinator mid-season, Muschump canned his O-Line & O- Coordinator. These things have to be done and if things had been done around here the right way, 3 years is enough to figure out if a coach is doing his job.

[As long as we're on the topic of Golden, we interrupt this column briefly for this: The NBC station in Philadelphia reported Tuesday night that Penn State still considers Golden a candidate for the job. Golden was not offered the job when he interviewed, leading to questions about whether he would take it if offered. He announced on Sunday that he wasn't a candidate for any job (without mentioning Penn State) after the UM administration asked him to address the matter publicly. We pass on the NBC Philadelphia report, because it's being reported by a major news outlet, but we don't have any indication whether Golden would even consider the job at this point. CBS reports Vanderbilt's James Franklin is the front-runner for the Penn State job. Now back to the column...]

Well, that was the first half that was missing against Syracuse!
Team communicates in that zone to each other very well, why it's tough to find open threes against them.
The great news is that UNC shoots so poorly from the line the traditional favoritism they receive from the officials is basically nullified due to the low average of conversions from the stripe.
The Pimp once again has the defending ACC champs playing the type of game they can win, my expectations are raised.

Maybe Golden should've said..."I'm not a candidate for another job...YET!" That guy sure knows how to play word games.

Brown canned his D-Line coach for Robinson because he had already brought the latter in as a consultant during the summer. In this case, the switch was easy to make and Robinson had been Brown's d-coordinator previously.
It would be like bringing in Randy Shannon to be a consultant, then naming him D-Coordinator after two games.
