Over the past eight years since Canespace began way back in 2006 we have steadily become much more than just your typical sports blog.
Most of the college sports web sites or blogs spend all their time every day simply regurgitating the same basic facts and stats and/or covering the insatiable demand for the always popular high school football recruiting news.
Here at Canespace we have been kicking butt and taking names for a long, long time now. As we have gone through the years we have learned that "community" and being part of the "CanesFam" matters as much as the score of the game, the team's season record or anything else sports related.
We have traveled long and far to North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina. We have been to Tampa, Orlando, Fort Myers, Boca Raton, Islamorada, DeLand and Jacksonville.
We have been deep into the heart of Gator Country in Gainesville and north to Tallahassee to see our Miami Hurricanes take on the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium (football), Dick Howser Stadium (baseball) and The Civic Center (basketball) in the State's Capitol.
In fact, Canespace has become a family, a social club of sorts and group of people who do things together well beyond the scope of University of Miami athletic events.
Sure hanging out by your computer for 24 hours around National Signing Day is fun and all but believe me, there is life outside of those four walls surrounding you as you read this.
We strongly recommend that at least every once in a while that you get up, put down the texting device step away from the computer and go outside and play. We know that if you try it, you'll like it!
Since we started this blog a little over six years ago Canespacers have been white water rafting, camping, scalloping, kayaking, partying, fishing, traveling and site-seeing in four different States.
We have also participated in many other activities that most people who read the blog on a casual or even a regular basis have no idea is going on. And, trust me, we have had a blast doing it!
Last year in February long-time blogger Old Skool and I went on another Canespace fishing trip in Central Florida on Lake Istokpoga near Sebring. And needless to say, we kicked bass!
So, again as usual, and as you can clearly see, a good time was had by all. Well, except for the 12 bass we caught in about 3 hours time? But, since we practice catch and release like most responsible outdoorsmen, we let them all go to live to fight another day.
This year we hosting a UM sports marathon that we have dubbed the "Four Play". Between 2/19/14 and 2/22/14 we will be attending four Miami Hurricane sporting events on campus in Coral Gables: Two basketball games and two baseball games. The "Four Play" events are as follows:
- UM baseball vs FAU on 2/19/14 at 6 PM
- UM basketball vs Notre Dame on 2/19/14 at 9 PM.
- UM baseball vs Florida on 2/21/14 at 7 PM.
- UM baseketball vs Boston College on 2/22/14 at Noon.
We hope that you will join us for this four day UM sports extravaganza!
So now the only question left is what outdoor adventure is in store for this year's off-season? Our activity committee led by NativeCane and Old Skool is still in the planning stages for this year's event and we will let you know what we have in store so you can decide if you are interested in participating.
Until then we strongly recommend that you go outside and play.
After all, it is the Canespace way.
Cool Nice pics

ARod loses arbitration -- must sit all of next season and the post season.
Posted by: Old Skool | January 11, 2014 at 12:24 PM
People have said it snidely, but I'm saying it here without humor or even anger: the administration's actions are not consistent with a desire to field a top-rate football team. If such a team comes into being, it will be in spite of administration policy, not because of it.

Clwtrdan...I saw your comment on the last blog about tickets to UM football games and attendance issues. Here are my answers:
1. Win and they will come.
2. Schedule BIG name opponents (UF) and they will come.
3. If U want to go to a game just show up on game day and U can ALWAYS buy a ticket from the Canespace E5 tailgate crew or from a scalper on site.
4. Or better yet meet us at the hotel in Plantation before we leave for the game and U can ride with me to avoid parking pass fees and get door-to-door transportation and tailgate with us at E5.

Soup,
Your pic of the scallops brought back old memories. When I was a kid my Dad and I used to go up off of Anclote Key north of Clearwater and go scalloping out of a 15' jon boat we had. I remember one trip in particular when they were thicker than thieves and in 4 hours of swimming we hauled in a wash tub overflowing with scallops. What a blast! That was the good part. The bad part was cleaning them on the back porch for the next five hours. But it was a load of fun. I thereafter found out you could buy bay scallops for 6 bucks a pound. We went this year and got a couple 5 gallon buckets full, had the same amount of fun, a good meal, and without the never ending drudgery of cleaning a thousand scallops. We made a delicious pasta with cream sauce and scallops with shrimp. I can't tell you how cool it is to go scalloping with my 80 year old Dad. Thanks for the memories.

The admin isnt for ships, but it was perfect for the ncaa issues. I want to win so bad but have no control.
I find that faith and family help me to not go crazy over the 8 years of mediocre teams. I am not ripping the kids on rhose teams, but the record speaks for itself.
I have also decided to take up hunting. I have several friends who hunt dear on there own lands. Thought it would be good to learn and teach to the kids.

Best and Worst of ACC Bowl Season!
Worst stat: 0-11. Miami got EMBARRASSED by Louisville, 36-9, in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Maybe worse than that final score was the 0-fer the Hurricanes posted on third downs.
Worst bowl game: Russell Athletic Bowl. The Hyundai Sun Bowl had the most lopsided score of ACC bowl season, but the Russell Athletic Bowl is the choice here. This was one of the most anticipated non-BCS games on the schedule, but this was never really a game. Miami looked unmotivated despite waiting two years for a shot at a bowl game and allowed Teddy Bridgewater to throw for 447 yards and three touchdowns.
MAYBE this is WHY kids are going to other schools!!!! I mean if you are not a CANE for life and just looking for chance to play on quality team and get decent education, then they/I would consider others.
Then add on the Happy Valley two step...Al can share the burden of after affects!
PUTS a lot of doubt in kids minds.
Happy for the ones we have and that want to be Canes, wish other well except for if they step on grid iron against the U.

It's what we do here at Canespace!
NativeCane was the one who set up that scalloping trip out of Crystal River. Old Skool, OGV and I went out with Native and his son on two different boats and killed 'em. Native's wife 'Beca is an expert scallop cleaner and taught me how to clean the waste and scoop 'em out of the shell and into the bucket.
Skool cooked them up that same night scampi style at the hotel (Best Western where we had a full kitchen/efficiency room) over pasta and they were delicious. All I had to do was make Margarita's while Native played guitar and sang a few tunes. GOOD TIMES!

dj, triangle, if your kids take up hunting theyll never give you a dimes worth of trouble. Outdoor life is good for your health and soul, I love the physical challenges of climbing trees and hills, blazing trails through brush so thick you cant cock a pistol, wading rivers creeks and swamps, practicing bow and rifle hunting skills, getting up at 4:30 am and watching that first crack of dawn 30 ft. Up a pine tree, watching gods creatures all day long, fun stuff!
If you or any other Canespacers need info on hunting leases give me a shout. My partner is a Miami boy ( Norland Viking ) and the clubs on both sides of us are from the 305, good folks!

Im in the early stages, but Im excited. My associate pastor has an arsenal and has offered me time to shhot and figure out ehat I want. I am used to something along the line of the m16 a2 so it has been awhile since ive been shooting.
Im in NC so thier isnt alor of open fields. Thinking shotgun and slugs. Thoughts?
Posted by: trianglecane | January 11, 2014 at 06:29 PM
I prefer a bow or rifle, 270, 30-06, 7mag, my grandson uses a 243 and when he drops em they dont get up but mrs. Native shot a huge 8pt with the 243 last saturday evening and while she was lamenting the shedding of innocent blood she failed to reload and he got up and left.
I prefer a 30-06, they dont go far after a well placed round!
Go Canes!!!

Don't know if there are any legs to this, but with Vandy's coach heading to PSU I suppose the potential of 4 star DT Michael Sawyers looking toward a place really needing a DT is worth considering.
As for the discussion on the last blog about when we fell in love with the U, I'd say it was in the early 70s with great baseball and bad football/going to games with my dad, etc. I still remember being at a game in the mid 70s watching the U eke out a win vs. Utah State. I became completely crazy over it watching them get good in the late 70s/early 80s, watching them on TV upset #1 PSU with Jim Kelly, beating VTech in the Peach Bowl and especially being at the game in the old OB when Jim Burt (Sr, for the newbies who only remember Jr. playing baseball) stopped FSU's 2 pt. conversion for the home win over a top 10 team. I suppose the team of the last decade is better than the team of the 60s and 70s, but not by a whole lot.

For those who think the 'hobbit' is not interested in 'ships, I don't know that I agree with that take. I think she seriously wants to make UM like Stanford, a near Ivy League school & winning FBS school. The only problem is that will send a lot of our top players out of state to help other programs excel. Even worse, she will make it hard for local Miami kids that grow up, dreaming of the U to come here. I believe UM has an obligation to give back to the community and helping local kids get an education @ the U. Let's face it, the football program put the school on the map & the football program was made by the kids in 'the state of Miami.'

Native, I would love to come down and do some archery hunting with you sometime. started archery hunting in north west Colorado for dear and elk in 1978. I lived Creg 40 miles west of Steamboat Springs. we did not buy any beaf at a grocery store for about 7 years. Once I bow hunted I never went with a gun again. I am trying to set up a bow hunting trip to northern New Mexico next season where a good friend of mine lives. When I asked her if she had Elk near her land she said how many do you want. I am going, if you are interested let me know. soup you are invited also. If you haven't hunted Elk with a bow you have no clue what you are missing.
