Barry Jackson:

WEDNESDAY BUZZ COLUMN

Five four-star recruits on offense are enrolling at UM in the next week, led by Miami Central running back Joseph Yearby. But as far as numbers, UM’s recruiting class (28 strong at the moment) is tilted more toward defense, with 16 players orally committed on that side of the ball, including three January arrivals: three-star linebackers Juwon Young and Trent Harris and defensive tackle Calvin Heurtelou.

With a month to go before National Signing Day, UM has assembled a defensive recruiting class with several high-quality defensive ends/outside linebackers, tackles and safeties, but questions at cornerback and uncertainty about a key tackle recruit who decommitted last weekend.

A look at UM's class on defense:
### Defensive tackle: UM’s biggest need, and the Canes are adding a solid group with four-star St. Thomas Aquinas standout Anthony Moten (rated the No. 6 defensive tackle), emerging three-star New Jersey based Courtel Jenkins (“great quickness for his size,” according to Rivals.com) and two junior college players who had other major offers and should help immediately: Michael Wyche (he has signed a letter of intent, but is awaiting an ACC decision on an obscure rule involving junior colleges before he’s cleared to enroll, as detailed in our last post); and Heurtelou, who had 14 tackles for loss and four sacks at Scottsdale, Ariz. Community College despite getting double- and triple-teamed a lot.

But this group needs Hialeah Champagnat four-star tackle Travonte Valentine to be considered exceptional. Valentine recently de-committed, but his coach, Mike Tunsil, told my colleague Manny Navarro on Tuesday that Valentine “loves UM” and might end up there but wants to meet with Al Golden to “make sure everyone is on the same page….

"For coach Golden to go interview for another job was unsettling. He wants to find out why [Golden] interviewed and if he is really planning to be there for the long haul.”

Valentine, who also plans to visit LSU, previously dropped oral commitments to Louisville and Florida.

“Valentine is key because he’s a guy you would have to double-team, the first big guy who can move that they’ve had since Antonio Dixon,” local recruiting analyst Charles Fishbein said. “You really need him. People around him, his family, want him in Miami. [But] I like Moten, also. And I have a scout who works for me in New Jersey who loves Courtel Jenkins. He thinks he’s a big-time player.”

Said analyst Tom Lemming: “I love Moten: long arms, quick feet, can play end or tackle in college. He plays against the best competition in the country. Four-star player with five-star potential.”

Also, UM is among 22 schools that have offered Plantation American Heritage defensive tackle Edgar Cerenord, who had 75 tackles and five sacks last season. He has said UM has ground to make up.

### Defensive end/3-4 outside linebacker: Might be UM’s best position in this class presuming the Hurricanes can hold on to five-star Booker T. Washington end Chad Thomas (rated the No. 1 defensive end and 26th among all prospects, by Rivals.com); his teammate, four-star end Demetrius Jackson (14.5 sacks this past season); Miami Northwestern three-star defensive end Mike Smith (16 tackles for loss, 10 sacks); and Winter Park’s Harris, who had 39 tackles for loss, 16 sacks and four forced fumbles in 2013 and whose high-school coach who has compared him with former NFL great Michael Strahan.

Golden expects Harris to play linebacker. So will Young, who had 141 tackles last season for Albany (Ga.) High. “Both those kids are 6-2, 6-3, have range, length,” Golden said.

Thomas, who had eight sacks, has never wavered on his UM commitment. “Explosive, game-changing speed,” Lemming said. “But he needs to put on a lot of strength.”
Smith said he is planning a late-January visit to Louisville, which has five Northwestern players on its roster. Contrary to perception, Blustein insists Smith is the “most impactful defensive player they’ve got in this class,” even more than Thomas. “He’s like Tyriq McCord as a pass-rusher but faster and better.”

And Blustein said Jackson “has unlimited potential. Once he puts weight on, he’s going to be a beast. A pure pass rusher who plays off instincts. He’s just learning how to play the run.”

### Inside linebacker: A concern, with largely unproven players (Raphael Kirby, Jermaine Grace) expected to assume major roles.

Three-star Pompano Beach Ely inside linebacker Terry McCray has told Rivals.com that his UM oral commitment is “between solid and soft” and that LSU has piqued his interest. McCray had 25 tackles for loss, 16 sacks and blocked a punt for a touchdown.
“One of the most underrated players in this class,” Blustein said. “Great tackler, reads plays well, very quick.”

Lemming said McCray “has a high ceiling, can really run, but not a great player yet."

USC oral commitment Olajuwon Tucker, a four-star end/outside linebacker, from Gardena, Cal., plans to visit UM Jan. 25, but it will be difficult to get him to flip.

### Cornerback: How this group will be rated will hinge entirely on whether UM can lure Immokalee’s four-star J.C. Jackson (a soft UF oral commitment who is considering UM, UF and FSU) and whether it can hang on to oral commitment Nigel Bethel, the four-star Booker T. Washington cornerback who said he wants to see the Hurricanes change their defensive scheme.

But Bethel told me Monday he “more than likely” will end up at UM, though he earlier told others he will consider Georgia and Arkansas if they make him offers.

“The one thing about Bethel is he will challenge you, wants to go against the best guy across from him,” Fishbein said. “Miami needs more kids like that in their program, who are around successful programs.”

Three-star Miami Northwestern cornerback Ryan Mayes appears firmly committed, but “Ryan didn’t have the year Miami expected,” Fishbein said. “He will end up having to play safety." Carol City receiver Trayone Gray, a UM oral commitment, could play cornerback if needed.

### Safety: UM looks in good shape here after adding four-star New Jersey-based Kiy Hester (five interceptions in 2013 and rated by ESPN as the 196th-best player overall), Lake Worth Park Vista’s three-star Marques Goyat (32 career interceptions) and Orange Park Oakleaf High’s three-star Darrion Owens (three sacks, interception, forced fumble).

“Hester is a major catch,” Lemming said. “He can play corner, receiver, kick returner. I see him as a corner.”

Fishbein: “Gayot is more of strong safety, a will linebacker, can play the run, not as good in coverage as he is against the run… I like Darrion Owens. He may grow into a linebacker.”

McCray Not Looking to Redshirt
2014 Blanche Ely (Fla.) Terry McCray was one of his teams best defensive prospects and proved his value this past season as he had a terrific senior year.

“This year I had to play a little bit of rusher and linebacker. I had 19 sacks and 110 tackles on the season. The season started off bad we went 1-4 but then finished 5-5 and made it to the second round of the playoffs and lost to Dwyer.”

McCray is now preparing for the next level of his athletic career which is set for the University of Miami, where he is excited to get there.

“I’m very excited; I wish I could’ve went in earlier, but I had to finish a few classes. I’m very excited though.”

The 6’2 195 pound linebacker is set to arrive in Coral Gables during the summer.

With all the commotion surrounding the ‘Canes and what Al Golden was going to do, McCray was relieved to hear he is staying.

“Kind of a relief because he’s a good coach and the scheme he’s got going on, he’s really starting to make all the south Florida players come to Miami. That’s the reason Miami isn’t what they used to be because all the out of state schools were coming in and taking all the kids. I think he’s been a great coach especially through the rough times and the scandals, he kept coaching and the players kept playing.”

The Blanche Ely product has been trying to stay in shape during the offseason by working out with a very high caliber professional football player.

“Yeah I’ve been working out; I’m actually working out with Patrick Peterson and he’s gonna bring a couple linebackers down and their gonna help me work on my game and I’ve been in the weight room too.”

The Miami commit plans to be a rush end linebacker for the Hurricanes and has no plans on redshirting.

“I’m basically going to be playing the Jarvis Jones type linebacker. I think I can use my speed to beat mostly anybody around the edge and I think I can play basic linebacker. I’m going to push to start and play my freshman year.”

McCray has been speaking with other Miami commits in his class and is excited to work with them next season.

“I talk to Brandon Powell from Deerfield, sometime I talk to Nigel Bethel and Chad Thomas. Just our class we have coming in and how we think it’s gonna be one of the best classes in a long time. We think we can bring a championship back to Miami.”

Jimbo is starting to think he's Bobby B now, "dadgum" it! This is a paragraph from ESPN re: his opinion on the new playoff format.

"I'm for it. Hey, playoffs -- if that's what you're going to do, we're going to line up and play them. But I just don't want to take the true history and tradition of those bowl games -- maybe you're 11-2, dadgum, that's a pretty good year. Now ... you act like somebody should get fired. It's a little bit ridiculous."

Pete Ariz:

**Starting with some good news, there was talk recently that Miami commit suffered a torn ACL and would have to miss significant time. I spoke to Smith tonight and he told me the injury was just a sprain suffered late in his season. He is already working out and plans to arrive at UM at 100% in the summer. I feel like Smith is not talked about enough as an edge rusher and have high hopes for him at Miami. He has been as productive as any player on the defensive side of the ball in South Florida over the past two years, including Chad Thomas.

**As expected, Miami officially offered Chaminade (Ca.) TE/WR Brayden Lenius (6-5, 215). Lenius is very high on Miami and his teammate Brad Kaaya told me that he thinks the Canes have a good shot to land Lenius. He will visit in January most likely with Kaaya. I’ve posted the story before, but Lenius is a 16-year old senior who transferred in from Vancouver this season. He missed the team’s first 5 games this season. Here are his highlights: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/944546...ghts/111520400

**Barring something unexpected, it is a long shot that Derrick Griffin will enroll at Miami. ACT scores have been out and we still have not heard anything from his camp. Miami is not expecting him in the class either.

**Following his visit to Miami, the Canes felt good about their chances of landing J.C. Jackson, but the battle for him has trended in Florida State’s direction over the past two weeks. Miami is not out of it, but there is ground to make up. It will be a tough pull.

**A name to keep an eye on at receiver is George Rushing. The Cardinal Gibbons senior is currently a Louisville commit, but told me his options are open and he is willing to listen to Miami. Rushing had a strong senior season and has a very good frame at 6-1, 190. He reminds me a lot of Rashawn Scott coming out of high school. Here are his senior year highlights, which are impressive: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/669555/h...378?autoplay=1

**After speaking with Champagnat Catholic Head Coach Mike Tunsil tonight, I believe that Miami is still a top choice for Travonte Valentine. Tunsil told me “nearly the whole country has called” since Valentine decommitted from Miami, so the Canes will have to fight off the likes of LSU and Alabama. Tunsil said that Valentine was planning on sticking with Miami until the uncertainty of Al Golden’s status at Miami. Golden needs to explain to Valentine that he is committed to Miami for the long run in order to regain his commitment, according to Tunsil. That full story is coming tonight.

FWIW Zach Thomas was 5'11" and 230 lbs. (Probably big enough to be an NFL LB.)

TonyCane

That said, I still would prefer a fleshed out, balanced squad (three QBs for instance) with forty 40 star players when going up against FSU.

TonyCane

And before anyone mentions it, yes the 40 four-star player 2007 Hurricanes only had 5 wins. Sometimes stars do not overcome, although in that case it was a badly depleted offense that had been hurt by years of whiffs on WRs and QBs. And bad luck...Marve likely would have played in '07 but for the car accident.

And to shed some more light on the counter-argument, the Florida Gators had more 4-star and 5-star players on their team than FSU did, and they only won four games. Coaching matters, as does depth at key positions and injuries.

TonyCane

And to all who don't believe in the star recruiting system, FSU is loaded with 4- and 5-star talent. Sure, every now and then the system fails (e.g. Ed Reed) but by and large we need to be landing the big fish.

I like our incoming class but we haven't been landing too many 5-star players in a long time (even before the self imposed sanctions). Until that happens we won't have turned the ride and shouldn't even consider the possibility of winning a ship.

GO CANES!!!

Posted by: RBLCane | January 07, 2014 at 11:31 AM

Simple mathematics. Without researching which of FSU's commitments did not make their team over the last four years or transferred, they had roughly 40 4-star players on their team. Very strong, but not quite as strong as Alabama. Collectively FSU had slightly more 4 and 5 star players than they did 3 star players.

Miami on the other hand - when you factor in players who transferred or did not qualify - had just 20 four star players on their team. The number of four star players has gone down all but one year since 2007 (Shannon had 40 four star players on opening day against Marshall). This year's seniors will pull 3 four star players from that total, bringing the team total down to just 17. However we should triple that number with the 2014 class, bringing our 4-star player total up to around 28-29.

Next year's senior class has just one 4-star player (Chikillo), assuming there are no early departures for the NFL or transfers. The 2015 class, if it's like this year's class, would bring the theoretical opening day lineup nearly 40 four star players.

DTs are def our highest need. Keeping Valentine would solidify an awesome DT class.

I like what Heurtelou's coach had to say about him...

"He'll be more of a nose, but we used him as a 3 technique," Madowski said. "What he does isn't flashy, but what he does in terms of helping the defense be successful is remarkable. He can take two offensive linemen and stack them up in the backfield. He knows how to strike an opponent, drive them back. Those linebackers are going to run a lot more free behind him. He has a chance to make an impact on a defense very, very quickly."

"And he was getting double and triple teamed all year long," Madowski said. "He's really good, can play. He has a great first step, is powerful, comes off the ball well. He can do a lot of things as a defensive lineman."

We haven't had that in what seems like forever.

We have Ryan Williams and Kevin Olsen already in school, both know the playbook well by now and can be really good QB's. I fail to see how any freshman QB, neither of which will be an EE, can come in and make us better next year.

Valentine at DT does exactly that. That's why I'm saying he's most important.

Stanadrd Shriver

what a difference having a QB who can manage a game, provide confidence, leadership with a birning desire to win can make to a football team. I saw nothing creative or overly mind blowing about FSUs offense or Jimbos play calling.....I saw QB with football intelligence and a team playing their hearts out....making plays when it mattered.

A QB who gives a rats ass about winning, will male a huge difference at Miami.

I got recruited out of school and I chose the best school for me. The kids will go where they want to go, whether its b/c of a coach, parents, distance from home, family plays there, playing time, etc. If a kid decides to go somewhere else regardless if they are here in the 305, 954, 786 etc, its not AlPa fault. RCCF, DT is the 2nd most important position on the team, hardest to recruit, and Alverage Slogan is currently in the midst of a "late Coker era attempting to get QB's to enroll" shutout streak of difference makers at the position.

Although, that's a really a list of an opinion, an opinion that can be factually justified with demographics, and a fact, so your mileage may vary with it.

Really like him, but we're not really hurting in the CB department. I'll be more than excited if he sticks, but he's not the team's biggest need right now.

CaneRock

No disrespect to Thomas or Valentine, but Brad Kaaya is our most important recruit...IJS.

it tells you that college football players do everything in college but get an education: 'we was?' or is it that moniker about FSU education; 'its so easy, even a caveman can do it.'

RCCF,

Valentine is the best DT we have coming in. It's also the position of our biggest weakness. First part opinion, second part fact.

All due respect to Chad Thomas (who is my PERSONAL favorite recruit this year along with KC), we're not lacking on explosive DE's. We're severely lacking a big bodied, filthy, pizzed off creature up front.

RCCF

Chad Thomas is MostImportant Recruit and Nigel Bethel... Where do U guys get this stuff why is Valentine Our Top Priority?

Facts Please..Not Opinions

Since Valentine will meet face to face with Golden, I am 98% sure he ends up back in this class.

Which is huge, because he's our most important recruit.

"He's been saying UM for a long time. He loves UM. But for Coach Golden to go interview for another job was unsettling.
-------------------------------------------
That's what I'm saying.

"A lot of things can change when a coach leaves. Now that Golden is back he wants to find out why Golden [interviewed] and if he really is planning to be there for the long haul."

--------------------------------------------Maybe, just maybe he can find out what us Cane fans want to know. One thing for sure the coach will walk away satisfied because if there is one thing Al can do it's run game.

On this we agree 100%.

We definitely need MORE talent.

We MAY also need a different scheme.

Very well done. I don't know what's come over you since last week but you're now on my 'must read closely every word' list of bloggers. I guess it's since you found that formerly AWOL 'R' maybe? Can't spell extRemist without an 'R' after all!

I can cosign every key you pressed about Perryman in this post from a purely football standpoint, BUT, he doesn't have his degree in hand and because of that one fact, I say he needs to return to rectify that. If he had a 1st round projection, then I'd say it's up to him and if he did go, invest that money wisely to live off the returns once the career is over if he didn't get the paper in hand at a later date, but he was never getting that projection so it's a waste of time IMO. Say you're coming back and walk that stage in the cap and gown. He did look a step slower to me last season and he was better at ILB I thought than he's been at OLB.

This is what tickles me with the Golden fans, you never hear a compelling argument as to why Golden is a good coach.

Only,
the NCAA, Randy Shannon, some other program does this, no depth, no talent as excuses and deflection mechanisms.

What about the Golden. Miami was the defiant bunch that made the blue print for everyone else to follow. Now we have to fall in line and copy? Maybe this is the new U and the new U fans. Sheesh

Go Canes

I agree with everything you are saying.

But you have to admit the difference in athletes compared to what we line up is pretty staggering.

There wasn't a Highsmith, Poarter, Armbrister, Green or Rogers anywhere in that starting 11.

I'm not saying one way is better than the other or even that our coach is any good.

All I'm saying is great athletes can make just about any scheme look really good.

"kick to the face" slapping is normal a kick to the face is what makes it over the top..

The hell with Texas, Strong and whoever else outside of the "U", we have our own problems and a delusional coach who thinks we are trending up, although aside from nine wins there is nothing to merit that statement! Alfredo, get your ass out there and get us some talent.
Let The Herb be blunt with you, this is what you need and please no plan B or C, we need another big running back, unless you plan on going to the spread option, oh I forgot to mention it's to late this year because they're all gone. Go get us a big time WR, oh I forgot we whiffed on all 4 from the state. Get us a couple, not one big time LB's we have 2 coming to visit, seeing if you can keep from botching this chance. Get us another big time CB, well that we'll have to wait until next year. Now that Valentine has flown the coop for the time being, now The Herb sees where Wyche may not be able to get in until the Spring but could get into most any other Uni. if he chooses to now. If that happens then what, another mad rush for some half-ass JUC0? I'll give an "A" for our O-L recruits and QB's but lets make them better, how about it.

Go Canes...it is not the 3-4 alignment but the aggressive ATTACKING nature in which FSU plays it that makes it work. Watch their safeties make TFL. Watch them have 11 guys withing 10 yeards of the LOS. Watch them man up on the WR.

I've finally seen Al 'Clark Kent' Golden for what he is. A sneaky dude that paints Preety pictures about who he is when in all honesty, he's no better than Urban Myer. Scratch that! I prefer urban Myer. At least he doesn't pretend to be what he's not. The truth is, Al has bitten up more than he can chew. He's a coach in training. And unlucky for us, he's internship is the U.

Dumbo Fishhead was determined to play that 3-4 front no matter how many times it got shoved down the front's throat, and now he needs a miracle.

That's why he does less with more like nobody else in the state . . . well, except for maybe Alverage Slogan. We'll call it a push.

They absolutely did run 3-4 last night.

They just had a d-line that blew up plays as Auburn got worn down late.

Manny:

U.S. Army All-American defensive tackle Travonte Valentine dropped his commitment to the University of Miami last week when talk of coach Al Golden possibly heading to Penn State began to reach a fever pitch.

Tuesday, his high school coach Mike Tunsil said Valentine could end up rejoining Miami's class now that Golden has announced he's staying put. But the 6-3, 338-pound standout and his coach at Hialeah Champagnat want to have a sit down conversation with Golden to "make sure everyone is on the same page."

"Travonte just wants security," said Tunsil, who said he's handling all interviews for Valentine until he makes his final announcement on National Signing Day. "He's been saying UM for a long time. He loves UM. But for Coach Golden to go interview for another job was unsettling.

"A lot of things can change when a coach leaves. Now that Golden is back he wants to find out why Golden [interviewed] and if he really is planning to be there for the long haul."

Tunsil said Valentine has communicated with Golden since he de-committed on Saturday after the U.S. Army All-American Game. But Tunsil said he hasn't spoken to Golden and will reach out to him this week if he doesn't hear from him soon.

"Travonte loves UM, the small class rooms like here at Champagnat," Tunsil said. "His mom is close to him here. It's all about sitting down with Golden and getting on the same page. He has a great relationship with their coaches, coach Hurlie Brown. He's not asking for any starting job to be promised or anything like that. He knows nothing is given. It has to be earned."

Valentine, ranked the eighth-best defensive tackle in the country by 247Sports, named LSU his leader after the U.S. Army Game. Tunsil said Valentine plans on visiting UM and LSU before he makes his final decision on Signing Day. He said Valentine could also end up visiting Alabama or Kentucky before then.

"He just doesn't want to go somewhere and then there is a coaching change," Tunsil said. "People have been badmouthing him on Facebook and Twitter since he de-committed. It really isn't fair to the kid. He just wants to see what's going on."

Tunsil said any rumors about Valentine having academic issues and not being able to qualify at UM aren't true.

"He's got the grades and the test score. It's always been a core class issue and he's been taking care of that with online classes and here," Tunsil said. "Travonte could qualify at any school in America except the Ivy Leagues probably."

I think for Perryman's NFL career he better leave. In only three years here he is already up to 240 pounds via UTough. Listed at's 6'0 (which is a strectch imo looks more 5'10 in person) I think that's already too much weight. With these coaches infatuation with weight gain, another year of Utough will have him up to 250. Leaves little room to pack on muscle once he gets with the NFL trainers. They'll probably ask him to lose weight.

On Chik I absolutely agree with you. As a matter of fact I read where an NFL scout stated Chik will have to lose weight to even be effective in the NFL.

Any place but where I am would be wonderful, Willie Will.

But I've said it for a while that Golden's decision to keep that stooge would strongly influence my support.

And it did.

Friends, Canes, Trolls! I've come to bury Golden, not to praise him.
Many a times I've defended 'Clark Kent' based on the enormity of the task he's Biden with & the unreasonable nature of canes fans. I've gone against most bloggers & shared similar views with only a very few. Well, that is no more. My constant MO was & will remain rationale. While my goal is not to share the same view as anyone & I seriously couldn't give a horse's piss what one or all thinks, if anyone fails to bring 'Clark Kent' to task, then u do the U an injustice.
From the transcript of his interview with Joe Rose, his response to The question about his interest in the penn state gig was to 'plead the 5th?' All he said was that, I para phrase, he was 'moving forward?' Most of u r into politics and I'm sure u know what he meant by evading the question. I don't care what u all say about cane sport reporting on this, but I totally believe fieldmans' reporting on this. He wanted the penn state contract. He only pulled out in the '11th hour.'
Then on the question of the defense, he gave evasive answers and pointed to progress with the use of minimally improved stats. On the other hand, he mentioned something about generating a better pass rush with 4 line men. What happened to his beloved 3-4? Is that a 3 & out for the 3-4? If u believe in 'Robins' scheme, then y switch. If u r showing progress by referring to stats, then y move to 4-3? Isn't the talent, according to u, the curlpit here? How can u even be proud of statistical progress when u r playing Savannah state & USF?
I've finally seen Al 'Clark Kent' Golden for what he is. A sneaky dude that paints Preety pictures about who he is when in all honesty, he's no better than Urban Myer. Scratch that! I prefer urban Myer. At least he doesn't pretend to be what he's not. The truth is, Al has bitten up more than he can chew. He's a coach in training. And unlucky for us, he's internship is the U.
