UM head coach Al Golden held his year ending press conference with the media today at the Hecht Athletic Center in Coral Gables.
Golden had a lot to say but rather than try to translate it into small sound bites I will let you listen to the entire event and then decide for yourself what the most important take-aways are.
Golden spoke about the team's defense, offense, talent, scheme, recruiting and the Penn State situation during the press conference. So, now I ask you this question: "What stood out for you?"
"kick to the face" slapping is normal a kick to the face is what makes it over the top..

I agree with everything you are saying.
But you have to admit the difference in athletes compared to what we line up is pretty staggering.
There wasn't a Highsmith, Poarter, Armbrister, Green or Rogers anywhere in that starting 11.
I'm not saying one way is better than the other or even that our coach is any good.
All I'm saying is great athletes can make just about any scheme look really good.

This is what tickles me with the Golden fans, you never hear a compelling argument as to why Golden is a good coach.
Only,
the NCAA, Randy Shannon, some other program does this, no depth, no talent as excuses and deflection mechanisms.
What about the Golden. Miami was the defiant bunch that made the blue print for everyone else to follow. Now we have to fall in line and copy? Maybe this is the new U and the new U fans. Sheesh

I can cosign every key you pressed about Perryman in this post from a purely football standpoint, BUT, he doesn't have his degree in hand and because of that one fact, I say he needs to return to rectify that. If he had a 1st round projection, then I'd say it's up to him and if he did go, invest that money wisely to live off the returns once the career is over if he didn't get the paper in hand at a later date, but he was never getting that projection so it's a waste of time IMO. Say you're coming back and walk that stage in the cap and gown. He did look a step slower to me last season and he was better at ILB I thought than he's been at OLB.

On this we agree 100%.
We definitely need MORE talent.
We MAY also need a different scheme.

"He's been saying UM for a long time. He loves UM. But for Coach Golden to go interview for another job was unsettling.
-------------------------------------------
That's what I'm saying.
"A lot of things can change when a coach leaves. Now that Golden is back he wants to find out why Golden [interviewed] and if he really is planning to be there for the long haul."
--------------------------------------------Maybe, just maybe he can find out what us Cane fans want to know. One thing for sure the coach will walk away satisfied because if there is one thing Al can do it's run game.

Since Valentine will meet face to face with Golden, I am 98% sure he ends up back in this class.
Which is huge, because he's our most important recruit.

RCCF,
Valentine is the best DT we have coming in. It's also the position of our biggest weakness. First part opinion, second part fact.
All due respect to Chad Thomas (who is my PERSONAL favorite recruit this year along with KC), we're not lacking on explosive DE's. We're severely lacking a big bodied, filthy, pizzed off creature up front.

Based on that comment, Red McCombs is the epitome of the delusional Texas booster. Thought the school should have hired Jon Gruden.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 07, 2014 at 04:13 PM
RCCF, DT is the 2nd most important position on the team, hardest to recruit, and Alverage Slogan is currently in the midst of a "late Coker era attempting to get QB's to enroll" shutout streak of difference makers at the position.
Although, that's a really a list of an opinion, an opinion that can be factually justified with demographics, and a fact, so your mileage may vary with it.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | January 07, 2014 at 04:14 PM
We need quality DTs more than any other position by far. Bethel is a good player but there are 20 players out there like him for every one Valentine or Thomas.

How do people come to the conclusion that we "whiffed" or Let a recuit "get away"? What more can you do than to recruit a kid within the guidelines? Sorry don't get it. I got recruited out of school and I chose the best school for me. The kids will go where they want to go, whether its b/c of a coach, parents, distance from home, family plays there, playing time, etc. If a kid decides to go somewhere else regardless if they are here in the 305, 954, 786 etc, its not AlPa fault. I don't think we "whiffed" the kid just didn't want to come here.......lets focus on who does and who signs on the dotted line!

They don't have the size to run a effective 3-4, so that can't be true! Hell even Jermaine Grace is bigger than their starters

Posted by: WWIN | January 07, 2014 at 04:26 PM
what a difference having a QB who can manage a game, provide confidence, leadership with a birning desire to win can make to a football team. I saw nothing creative or overly mind blowing about FSUs offense or Jimbos play calling.....I saw QB with football intelligence and a team playing their hearts out....making plays when it mattered.
A QB who gives a rats ass about winning, will male a huge difference at Miami.
Posted by: Stanadrd Shriver | January 07, 2014 at 04:26 PM
We have Ryan Williams and Kevin Olsen already in school, both know the playbook well by now and can be really good QB's. I fail to see how any freshman QB, neither of which will be an EE, can come in and make us better next year.
Valentine at DT does exactly that. That's why I'm saying he's most important.

DTs are def our highest need. Keeping Valentine would solidify an awesome DT class.
I like what Heurtelou's coach had to say about him...
"He'll be more of a nose, but we used him as a 3 technique," Madowski said. "What he does isn't flashy, but what he does in terms of helping the defense be successful is remarkable. He can take two offensive linemen and stack them up in the backfield. He knows how to strike an opponent, drive them back. Those linebackers are going to run a lot more free behind him. He has a chance to make an impact on a defense very, very quickly."
"And he was getting double and triple teamed all year long," Madowski said. "He's really good, can play. He has a great first step, is powerful, comes off the ball well. He can do a lot of things as a defensive lineman."
We haven't had that in what seems like forever.

Lol RCCF that's not an Alfred answer. I truly believe that. I played college basketball and we never needed "that guy" just like I don't think it's a coach's job to get a player hyped up before the game. But I see what you're saying as far as teams having that hype guy. I think each year is a new team so I guess we'll see what vocal leaders come forward in the spring.
Posted by: TLuv | January 07, 2014 at 04:50 PM
Nearly all our committs were asked if Golden's departure would effect their commitment and they ALL answered NO!! They ALL said they were committed 2 the U, not the coach! When K.C. McDermott was asked if Golden leaving would have an effect on any of the committs KC responded, " Nah, it wouldn't have effected anybody".

4-Real, you're misinformed. A good bit said that, but not ALL of them.
Bethel, Valentine, Mike Smith, Rosier, Thomas, Moten, and Hester were all worried he was leaving and said it could've affected their commitment.

All the great UM teams had "vocal leaders", just because you "truly believe that", doesn't make it NOT SO!
Michael Irvin...Ed Reed...Ray Lewis...Warren Sapp...Alonzo Highsmith...Melvin Bratton...Jerome Brown <<<<< "Hype guys"? LMAO!

"Bethel, Valentine, Mike Smith, Rosier, Thomas, Moten, and Hester were all worried he was leaving and said it could've affected their commitment."
Rosier? We're His only D-1 offer, where was He gonna go...
And IMO, Hamilton is more responsible for Moten coming here, than Golden.
But if you have social media forensics, then you stand corrected.
