RIVALRY RENEWED

- Miami dropped two of three in Gainesville, Fla., in 2013, winning the series opener 3-2 but dropping the next two games.
- Miami holds the all-time advantage over Florida 124-109-1, including a 77-41 lead at Mark Light Field. The Gators carry a 68- 46-1 lead at Alfred McKethan Stadium.
- Miami snapped its losing streak to the Gators with a 3-2 win in the 2013 series opener. David Thompson’s RBI single in the top of the ninth put Miami ahead, while AJ Salcines earned the save in relief.
STARTING OUT
- Three freshmen were in head coach Jim Morris’ Opening Day lineup: first baseman Zack Collins, designated hitter Willie Abreu and second baseman Johnny Ruiz. Shortstop Laz Rivera and designated hitter Jacob Heyward have also earned starts in the early going.
- Three Hurricanes pitchers made their career-first appearances in the team’s series win over Maine: righthander Bryan Garcia, lefthander Danny Garcia and righthander Cooper Hammond.
- Four Hurricanes connected on their career-first basehits in Sunday’s finale against the Black Bears: Willie Abreu (double), Edgar Michelangeli (double), Laz Rivera (RBI single) and Brad Zunica (single). Johnny Ruiz connected on his first basehit in the team’s 5-2 loss to FAU Wednesday.
- Miami starting pitchers combined to allow just two earned runs over 15 innings against Maine - one each from Chris Diaz and Andrew Suarez. Canes starters threw 27 strikeouts compared to just five walks.

Miami now officially has five 3-Star commits. Four are from the "State of Miami". I fully expect Spence to end up a 4-Star and perhaps Feder too... but with limited room we need to start snatching up the elite guys now.
Posted by: UMike | February 21, 2014 at 07:14 AM
----------------------------------------
Most of the elite guys won't commit this early. Just how it is. If we can get 1 or 2 of the elite guys before or during the Summer, it will go a LONG way.
Have to lock up Jaquan ASAP. When he commits, others will follow, and SOON.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 21, 2014 at 09:15 AM
I agree... and I am not saying we need to get their commitments right now, just that we need to fill this rest of class up with elite guy... or as many as we can get.

Hard to believe dude has been All-Dade since freshman year.
Posted by: UMike | February 21, 2014 at 09:24 AM
Miami HAS to win this year... if we lose games we shouldnt or have more blow out/career day losses this class could break this staff. If we can win and improve (genuinely) and keep these kids home, this could be the class to change things, not just on the field but off it. At least imo

Canerock
have to agree with you the Fines kid sounds good.....I like what he said about his play....aggressive. We haven't had anybody play aggressive since....I mean THEY think they are aggressive.....but hell they do not have a clue what it means just put some film on. some kids have it already, others you have to draw it out of them. I like the kid.
Just think how got S Henderson would have been if he had an ounce of aggression......its the game its about hitting and hurting not talking and tapping..........

UMike & Ohio_Cane...would preferred walk-ons, be considered guys we would've gave schollies too? Forget His name, but we had a kid from this class, who pretty much fit the same profile as Fines, who decided to go elsewhere.

CR, preferred walk-ons do not have a scholarship. They are guaranteed one IF they perform very well and/or hit a certain amount of play time

VA Cane, thanks for the kind words the other day - just want you to know your request was granted by my compadres at the Titanic.
Raize - I was truly touched by your concern for myself and Terrance on our trip down Wednesday. I will make a better attempt at not driving while distracted on the way back to Otown. When I get back I'll start in earnest looking to hook you me and longtime up for a couple of nights at the Amway.
Terrance, sounds like you have already started your "party on the patio"..I'll see you and Soup in the Gables a little later after I leave the 954.

i got a question for you guys. are you guys a fan of u tough? because besides weight gain room number improvements i dont see it translating on the field. For example even when the players were out of shape before u tough the defense was never ranked as low as it is post u tough. just wanted to know your opinions
Posted by: jsy | February 21, 2014 at 02:41 PM
jsy,
Before UTough, we were consistently tired (and it showed) in the 4th quarter, especially the last 5 minutes or so, in every single game where we weren't blowing out the opponent.
All players have gotten bigger, faster, stronger, and in much better condition. So yes, I love it.
The rest U speak of is coaching. UTough only lasts a week.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 21, 2014 at 02:16 PM
Even if they didn't score Crosby and Kunitz played a very solid game. Quick was great in the US goal.
Sweden will be tough...Not a done deal.
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | February 21, 2014 at 02:52 PM
I love U tough. On my opinion we'll see the fruits of all that labor when we have more depth and the players doing it are more talented.
Posted by: Go Canes | February 21, 2014 at 03:11 PM
Go Canes back at blaming the players for Al's lack of ability.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 21, 2014 at 03:20 PM
How are the players not at fault, Dude?
Not trying to argue Al doesn't have any responsibility, but why do the players get a pass for how they execute?
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 21, 2014 at 03:28 PM
Main article on Yahoo right now:
"I didn’t exactly put up a fight when I was told to do a story on a pool in South Florida. After all, New Yorkers have been living under thirty-feet of snow this winter and my complexion was a little translucent. So, before my interview with NASCAR great, Jimmie Johnson in Daytona Beach, I packed my trunks, ditched my salt-stained boots and tried to convince coworkers that I was on this tough assignment at the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, Florida."

How players execute is a direct reflection of who coaches them. Al/No'D keep putting these players behind the 8 ball with their lack of ability in coaching defense. UTough is a good program because it is neccessary. Every major program has to do something like this. Can't just hope and wish players will work out.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 21, 2014 at 03:37 PM
U tough = bad seasons
Al Golden = bad seasons
Both of these are correlations not causations.
The causations for bad seasons are an equation of multiple facotrs some of which are listed below:
Bad recruiting classes + Players not panning out + entitled feeling of players not working for it + a year in which every junior left for the NFL + NCAA investigation + Horrible quartebacks for the better part of a decade + some injury + non cupcake schedules (i.e. FSU) = Bad Seasons.
The cause is a multitude of factors most starting with past players that have been worked out of the systems. Now we have some great players but not a pleathera of talent like we used to and like we need to be at the level we expect. The player talent is buildign back up (my opinion still 2 recruiting classes away). I think when the talent levels are where we want them to be even Dno will loke like a good coach (not that he will be).
Posted by: Cane Since 1982 | February 21, 2014 at 03:42 PM
Here's my problem, talent isn't the reason we didn't win 11 games this year. We are more talented than Duke and VT, but were outcoached and outplayed. That lies on the head of Al Golden. You want talented 4 and 5 star kids to come in? Win games you should and don't have your BFF run your defense when he clearly isn't capable. Oh yeah, and don't flirt with Penn State.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | February 21, 2014 at 03:47 PM
You want talented 4 and 5 stat kids to come in, send them to the NFL as early round draft picks (1st preferably, but hell, I'd take a 2nd rounder at this point).

So I basically we need these players: 5* Chad Thomas, 4* Kiy Hester, 4* Anthony Moten, 4* Demetrius Jackson and various other 3* defensive recruits to come and save face for these currents defensive players: *Deon Bush, 4*Anthony Chickillo, 5* Tracy Howard, 4* Tyriq McCord, 4* Jelani Hamilton, 4* Jermaine Grace, 4* Raphael Kirby, 4* Alquadin Muhammad, 4* Jamal Carter and 4* Artie Burns, lol
