Lol... kid gloves... I'm just gonna let that one go. You seem to be missing the point of what SOUP posted. I agree you don't name call, but you can't say you don't attack people. Anyhow I'm willing to bury any hatchet between us so long as you can stop using troll-like behavior on Canespace.

KYcane

UMike - Like Raize, both of my daughters took Tae-Kwon-Do and had green belts. It does take a lot of time and effort but I felt it was worth it.

If you ever need any sparring gear let me know. Both girls were middle school, and I have 2 sets in pristine condition (helmets, chest protectors, hand & feet pads).

Terrance Sullivan

Indeed we gonna have a blast next time we are in South Florida again. Go Canes!

86Cane

But ok, if "The Dude" is extra sensitive and needs to be handled with kid gloves, I'll keep that in mind.

Posted by: Lurker | March 18, 2014 at 07:08 PM

We are ALL sensitive, eat yogurt, drink green tea, eat organic foods and trust our feelings and intuition.

Well except for CaneRock, UMike and RCCF?

Terrance Sullivan

KYcane Yes Sir bruh!

KYcane

Terrance, Thanks for the flattering remark. I certainly did enjoy my time with you & Soup. I only wish he & I didn't have to work and could have helped you hold down the pool patio during the day. I'm especially grateful you were able to help me out with the friggin card machine at CVS after I left my glasses in the car.

Next time we will not miss the wings on the beach.

Lurker

Honestly, it wasn't a personal attack. I mean saying something is silly is pretty mild. Also, I don't personally attack people, I've never said anything personal about anybody, like calling them names., I would just hope it's ok to call out an idea that I think is silly, considering the crazy things I see posted on the Internet that's tame. But ok, if "The Dude" is extra sensitive and needs to be handled with kid gloves, I'll keep that in mind.

SOUP

Lurker...there is NO CC info or other personal identifiers except for a valid email and NEVER any cost for free info at Canespace.

The Canespace Way is to promote YOUR ideas instead of attacking others ideas. I know this is a new concept for some but here is a brief example:

WRONG:

Blogger 1: I prefer the 4-3 defense over the 3-4 because it stops the run better which is always the first priority for any defense college or pro.

Blogger 2: U stupid idiot, U wouldn't know a football if it hit U in the face! The 4-3 is the worst defense in football. Have U heard of the forward pass U Neanderthal? Only the 3-4 works in current football and everybody knows that. What planet are U on? FOOL!

RIGHT:

Blogger 1: I prefer the 4-3 defense over the 3-4 because it stops the run which is always the first priority for any defense college or pro.

Blogger 2: I understand why some people may prefer the classic 4-3 defense to stop the run but I think the 3-4 defense offers a lot more flexibility and versatility especially against passing teams while also allowing the defense to attack an offense in more diverse ways.

Lurker

Nah, I just think it's pretty silly to think you need to have a graduate degree to be a position coach, that's all.

Yes, I'll go blue, whatever that means. I'm assuming it's just a registration process? As long as I don't have to give a cc number or something. It'll make my lurker handle seem obsolete, though.

SOUP

Go Canes, they normally start as a Grad. Assistant while they finish classes.

Posted by: HawaiiCane | March 18, 2014 at 06:34 PM

Good point.

But can U imagine IF someone really famous like a Ray Lewis or Ed Reed did not have a degree (I have no idea if they actually do?) was brought on as a grad asst? LOL

Ice Harris may be well known in Florida but not like THAT!

HawaiiCane

Go Canes, they normally start as a Grad. Assistant while they finish classes.

Go Canes

I don't think knowing an assistant has to have a degree is so ultra obvious. I actually find it very hard to believe that there's never been a college player leave early for the NFL without getting his degree, then retire and get into coaching.

So not a troll then? Just an @sshole? K, now I understand. You could just simply answer the question and move on. No need to imply that people don't know anything about CF because they are unsure to the rules of what type of degree an assistant needs. I think its well documented that I'm not a troll here, I've been posting here for years. As far as my CF knowledge goes, I don't pretend to know everything like you do, so I guess that makes me somehow inferior, so much so that I don't even deserve an answer from my friends that have posted here for again... years. You typically respond like a troll to comments. Maybe you aren't a troll, you are what I might call "troll-like" then. I know you have got something up your @ss for me because I was the first one to call you out on this. Give it a rest man. Add to the conversation, don't try to kill it by insulting others. Well there U go. We were just talking about this:

### Tim Harris said his new role at UM is almost identical to the one he had at UM under Randy Shannon “but I feel more comfortable doing it. I understand the roles.”

He needs to graduate from college to be able to coach, and Harris said he is two semesters away from doing that. “I know I can coach,” he said. “My record speaks for itself.”

UMike - both of my daughters took Tae-Kwon-Do and both got up to 2nd degree black belt.

As far as cost goes, my wife was at trainig so much, they offered her a part time job and the classes were then free so we got lucky. But it can get expensive because you have to pay extra when it come time to earn a new belts.

After 6 years, both of my kids got tired and i was not going to force them so my best advise is to sign them up, support them until they no longer find it enjoyable and hope that by then, they have the basics. My youngest is only 105 lbs so there is no way she can defend herself against an adult male so also teach them about their surroundings and what to look for.

To be a position coach, doesn't it have to be a Master's degree?

Posted by: The Dude | March 18, 2014 at 02:43 PM

Is that a serious question?

Dude on a Pale Horse

I'm not worried about Tim Irvin's 40 time at all. He is a tazmanian devil out there. Besides WELL OVER half the 40 times and Ht/Wt numbers out there are exaggerated.

Dude on a Pale Horse

To be a position coach, doesn't it have to be a Master's degree?

trianglecane

My dad took me to a boxing ring at 4 in east LA. LOL! needless to say a little mexican kid kick my butt. But, I did learn to fight back..

I love my pops, BUT i will not do that to my boys, it's karate starting this summer. More about gaining confidence that kick'n booty.

UMike

Right.. thats why the whole "being able to defend against adults" appeals to me.

The Dude

Posted by: UMike | March 18, 2014 at 02:11 PM

Agreed. This is why more women should carry weapons. A gun, spray, knife... something. There are bad people out there. Obviously for your daughter she cant carry a pistol, best to run and scream or disable, run and scream.

UMike

lol.. my uncles made dam sure I knew how to fight, but they mainly made sure I wasnt no punk (which of course would look bad on them).... I dont want THAT for my kids lol... just to be able to defend themselves and understand threats are out there. But street fights arent anything like a woman or girl being attacked.

The Dude

Posted by: UMike | March 18, 2014 at 02:03 PM

Exactly! My wife has no defensive state of mind, grew up sheltered in Idaho Falls, which is funny 'cuz here Dad is a hardcore dude.

The Dude

Golden Al speaks to the media.

UMike

Dude, I agree. Where I grew up everyone had a defensive state of mind and you HAD to know how to defend/fight, or run fast. But my kids (thankfully) dont live in that type of environment so it isnt natural to them like it is to me. But since my daughter is getting older and developing (Lord help me!!!!) I think I want her to know proper ways to defend herself againt kids and adults.

Ohio_Cane

UMike, I never did Gracie JJ, but that sounds right.

The JJ I did around here did more on ground stuff, but the teacher also taught us harmful AND harmless ways in the same situations. AKA street way vs competition way.

The Dude

I don't think there's really a "wrong" answer as to which type U pick. She'll learn how to defend herself as well as learning discipline from any MA or MMA class.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | March 18, 2014 at 01:43 PM

I agree with this. My sister and I took classes in self defense from about 7 to 14. Just getting to understand a defensive state of mind is one thing these classes should be drilling home and is a super positive thing.

UMike

Ohio, when I was reading up on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, they said the main difference between normal Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is that the Gracie style teaches to defend both on your feet and on the ground. It also said the class teaches to defend against adults and against other children without really hurting them.

Ohio_Cane

It is definitely worth it. The discipline in martial arts or MMA is something not all parents can or know how to teach. It's also something that I think should be taught by someone other than the parents, since we all know kids only listen to and obey so much of what they're parents instill.

I don't think there's really a "wrong" answer as to which type U pick. She'll learn how to defend herself as well as learning discipline from any MA or MMA class.

Tae-Kwon-Do was good because you learned more how to defend yourself more on your feet than on the ground and Jiu-Jitsu will teach more how to defend yourself on the ground more than on your feet. Both are taught in each, and both are important.

Regarding costs, I'd ask around close to you since they can vary widely.

UMike

Ohio.. my daughter will be in middle school next year, and I just want her to be able to defend herself. I can teach her how to street fight all day, but there isnt any discipline in that and I want her to have the knowledge to fight off an adult as well. Was thinking of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I'm wondering about the costs involved and if it helps, is worth it.

Ohio_Cane

I think Im going to sign my daughter up for MMA classes... anyone here have any experience with kids and MMA or self defense classes?

Posted by: UMike | March 18, 2014 at 01:31 PM
---------------------------------------

I took Tae-Kwon-Do as a kid. My dad put me in it. Got my black belt at 13. I quit because I wanted to focus just on sports. Also, I took MMA as an adult. Any questions regarding that, let me know and I'll let U know what I can.

Never put my children through them yet tho, but I will be when they're old enough.

UMike

raize, I have stayed in the cabins in the smokeys in Gatlinburg and loved it. Loved sitting in the hot tub on the balcony looking at the smokies. Plus Pigeon Forge is right there with lots of fun stuff to do and see.

Off topic.. I have decided to start hunting with a compound bow instead of a rifle. What brand\model should a beginner start with?

Posted by: trianglecane | March 18, 2014 at 12:57 PM
------------------------------------------

Beginner or not, the better bow U get, the better off U are. Compound bows can be adjusted to your strength. I wouldn't use any less than 40lb draw weight for deer. No need to go over 60-65.

The higher the draw weight, the harder it is to hold for longer periods of time, so be careful to practice a lot. Picture the deer (or whatever animal) walking up and stopping right behind a tree/bush/etc when U draw back and see how long U can keep it drawn back without letting it down, but still being able to be accurate after holding for a few seconds or up to 20-30 seconds if U can.

You're going to pay more for a better bow, but you'll also get better results and accuracy with them.

Me and my buddy both have a Bowtech Destroyer 340, but the 350 is what everyone is buying now. Bowtech, Hoyt and Mathews are all good brands to look at.

I didnt see any reason to keep D'No... but...I think when something opens up they will, they would be dumb not to.

Ohio_Cane

UMike, it's the only position he can take without a degree. He's earning his degree while he works the current job. He'll get a position coach/other job once he's got the degree. Golden won't let him go easily.

Olsen getting plenty of praise for his work at practice today.

But then is seen leaving after practice with a big bag of ice wrap over his right hand. Hope it's nothing serious.

UMike

Either way, the LB play should improve.

Ohio_Cane

I can see how I confused people since I only mentioned 3 LBs. My bad.

Ohio_Cane

I was talking specifically about the 3-4. When we're in the 4-3, Perryman will be MLB. 3-4 will be Perryman and Kirby, I believe.

trianglecane

Alright.. I thought\hoping kirby was coming around and moved back to the middle.

UMike

triangle... I just meant he is not in the middle anymore

I thought DP52 was moved back to the inside? did something change?

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/umiami/2014/03/first-spring-um-canes-practice-in-the-books-great-day-says-al-golden-news-on-hunter.html

UMike

If Kirby and Figs live up to the hype, could be the best LB group we have had in a while

Ohio_Cane

I love our LB's if Kirby can make quick and correct adjustments. Figs and Perryman will reek havoc.

Ohio_Cane

Like I said, Kirby will be an improvement in speed and talent. As long as his head is right, he'll be a big step up

CaneRock

Ohio_Cane, I agree, Gaines was a smart ILB. But MAN! that Duke game though...SHEEZ! LMAO!

UMike

Gaines was painfully slow though, he must be doing ok if they leave Perryman at the outside spot.

Ohio_Cane

Kirby will be an improvement in talent and speed from Gaines. Can he read and adjust the D as a MLB? We'll see. I actually thought Gaines did a decent job at that last year.

UMike

If Im not mistaken, isnt Kirby suppose to be pretty fast?

CaneRock

Hopefully Kirby can put it together this season.

VA Cane

I think I'll crash the gates and see if I might be allowed to help with the Defense? Couldnt hurt....I would enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
