Freshman Zack Collins powered Miami to a sweep of No. 25 NC State Sunday, connecting for two home runs and six RBI in a 12-5 victory at Doak Field.
Collins recorded the first multi-home run game of his career in the win, belting two towering shots to send Miami to its second ACC sweep of the spring.
"It was a great game, and our guys swung the bat well," head coach Jim Morris said. "It was a good game for us, and a big weekend sweep."
The six RBI was the best individual offensive effort since Scott Lawson drove in six against Texas A&M in 2010, while the multi-home run game was the first for a Hurricane since Peter O'Brien accomplished the feat in 2012.
"It's great to see him come through," Morris said of his star freshman. "He had a great fall, and we all knew he could swing the bat. It's nice to see him start coming alive for us."
With the game tied up 5-5 in the seventh, Miami's bullpen pitched three scoreless innings to keep the Hurricanes in the game. Freshman Cooper Hammond (3-0) earned the victory in relief, while Miami scored four runs in the eighth - including a three-run home run from Collins - to go ahead 9-5.
Miami scored eight runs over the final three innings of the game, including three more in the ninth, to capture its first three-game ACC sweep since a 2011 trip to Wake Forest.
"It was a pretty crazy game," Collins said. "It felt good. I'm always trying to put the bat on the ball hard and make good contact. Today, those [balls] went out."
The Hurricanes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Collins. With seniors Dale Carey and Tyler Palmer on base after back-to-back walks to open the game, two wild pitches from NC State starter Logan Jernigan advanced both runners into scoring position.
Collins' hard-hit grounder to short produced the first run of the game for the Hurricanes.
Miami (17-12, 8-4 ACC) chased Jernigan after just 2.0+ innings, when back-to-back singles from Palmer and freshman Willie Abreu opened the third. Collins delivered again for the visitors, cracking an RBI single through the rightside to put Miami ahead 2-0, while a sacrifice fly from senior Brad Fieger made it 3-0.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native then belted a towering solo blast off NC State reliever Joe O'Donnell to put Miami ahead 4-0 in the fifth. The Hurricanes, who entered the weekend tied for the ACC lead in home runs, connected for three more on the weekend against Wolfpack pitching.
NC State (15-11, 3-9 ACC) came storming back with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take its first lead of the series. Solo home runs from Andrew Knizner and Jake Armstrong off Bryan Radziewski helped key the comeback.
"It's awesome," Collins said. "But we have to keep working hard. No matter what goes on, you still have to play the next day."
The Hurricanes return to the diamond Wednesday for a midweek matchup against Bethune-Cookman.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
We recommend that you get your Mark Light Milkshakes early!

### UM wouldn't allow reporters to watch Saturday's scrimmage, but it did release a few details. Among them: Ryan Williams and Kevin Olsen took all the snaps... Williams made some nifty throws: a long TD pass to Phillip Dorsett and a sharp throw to Rashawn Scott for a big gain... But Williams was sacked by Anthony Chickillo and Al-Quadin Muhammad for a safety on the first play of the day. Muhammad had a sack on another play.. Stacy Coley made a couple of terrific catches.... UM ran for four touchdowns and threw for two....
Impressive early enrollee Darrion Owens made his mark at linebacker Saturday, generating pressure on the quarterback.... Artie Burns intercepted a pass.... Gus Edwards and Walter Tucker looked good running the ball... Safety Dallas Crawford stuffed a running play for a loss... Williams said this is the most physical the offensive line has looked since he has been here. But offensive penalties were a problem, Jon Feliciano said.

Tito...
2015 Baylor (Tenn.) quarterback Nick Tiano has been working hard this offseason with almost no days off to improve his game.
“I’ve been working with my quarterback’s coach every day of the week. I’ve been lifting Monday, Wednesday, Friday and I do speed and agility on Tuesday and Thursday. Everyday after that I’m working on my game; just trying to master the craft of playing quarterback and just trying to get better every day and improve on the things that people have been telling me I need to work on. I’ve got to see some colleges and compete in some Elite 11’s and just get ready for a big season this year.”
Tiano was able to see a large number of colleges during the spring which included trips to Tennessee, West Virginia, and Miami.
“It was great to see all those colleges and see what they have to offer, because each one of those places is going to be different and the coaches are gonna tell you different things. It’s kinda cool to see the different conferences, the size of the school, is it a small school or a bigger state school. Just trying to find the place that I fit in best at academically and athletically that’s a good fit for my family and I.”
The 6’5 220 pound quarterback got an opportunity to spend sometime in Coral Gables and experience what it’s like to be a Hurricane.
“It was great, My dad an I went there and we really love Coral Gables. Being at the university we really expected it to be this huge, spread out campus, but really you feel like your not even in the city of Miami which I thought was really neat and the campus was beautiful. The coaches were great; I got a lot of time to spend with coach Golden and coach Coley. It was cool to talk them about the kinda things they see me doing at Miami.”
The Tennessee native quarterback also liked the academic side of Miami as well as the program in general.
“ I got to see the academic advisor and see how great of an education I can get there. It’s just a great school, a great place and a historic program. I got to see guys like Jimmy Graham and Ray Lewis and they were telling me that those guys always come back to train there because Miami’s such a great place.”
One aspect that truly intrigued Tiano was the style of the Hurricane’s offense and how it’s ran.
“I really liked the offense they run, it’s pro-style, but you have some shotgun sets, some under center sets. A lot of passing mixed in with a good running game. I think it’s the perfect offense for me and my skill set. I really like what they have their quarterbacks do in the offense and all the playmakers. I got to hang with Stacy Coley and some other receivers and the offensive line. They’ve got a bunch of great players and they should do some big things for them this year.”
The visit seemed to be a success for Tiano so much that he rated his visit a perfect 10 out of 10.
“It’s a 10, it was a great visit. It was everything I ever dreamed it to be and they treated me like a priority to them and that goes a long way with me. Coach Golden also spent a lot of time with us and that was a big thing to me and it was just a really good visit and me and my dad both loved Miami.”
The Baylor product is looking to visit Miami again sometime in the summer if not for a game during the fall. As far as when fans can expect a possible commitment?
“It could be as early as May, but could be as late as July because I want to make sure when I commit. I’d liked to be committed and take that one official visit that I’m committed to. I’d like to be done by the summer.”

He must be so entrenched as the starting QB he doesn't even need the Spring ball reps.

In newer recruiting news. UM will not be getting QB Torrance Gibson. We have A LOT of ground to make up. Not sure why. We've been recruiting him since the 8th grade, but one trip to Tennessee has given them the lead.

Old news I think... his "lead" will change a couple times before NSD, but I think him and T. McFadden can be scratched off our list. Plenty of other talent to snatch up though.

It's from yesterday.
I'm not saying UM will stop recruiting him, just don't think we're getting him, especially if one trip to TN has them jumping us by a lot. Not like they've been a powerhouse the last 5-10 years.

Ohio.. I didnt mean that report was old news, I mean the whole Gibson not coming to UM thing. I think his "leader" will change a few times and ultimately he will end up at OSU.

Even though its a scrimmage and you can't really take much out of them, the defense looked big physical and fast. They were gang tackling and hitting hard Ex. crawfords hit on tucker or bush's hit on dobard.
Im still not conviced with Ryan Williams but I hope he proves me wrong, I like Olsens ability to create more space and time.
