VA Cane

Nigerian my friend, I will not sling any mud because that is not my bag but will say this: I have a lot of problems with the way the last 2 presidents have run the show, and the House and Senate are just as guilty. Neither one of these presidents were qualified, or had any real insight to the reality of the world...they see things the way they want to see it and how they think it should be, not the way it really is. I am neither a Repub or a Dem; I am a realist who believes in freedoms of the Constitution yet tolerance of all race, color, creed, religion or gender.

I believe in the principles America was founded on....not in the Amerika of today as a result of 54 years of power politics, big money, big business, Wall Street/Capital Hill cronyism and a mixture of Communism,Socialism, and yes Nazism. You may think you are free, but you are only as free as the Reign of Terror since WWII will allow. The leaders we have are mere puppets huge sources of money neither you or I can fathom. I love America; I HATE this government and all it does to ruin lives. I love guns with all my heart, I love the Bible, I obey the laws, I love being an appraiser and coaching kids, and I respect all people and their rights and never ever bother others. In many ways I am a lone wolf so to speak. And while I have never fucked my cousins, if you did I would have no problem with it as long as you treated them nice!!!!!

America is a great place because of the good people here; the government...not the foot soldiers as they are good people merely working for a top heavy corrupt corporation....is the means to an end....help the middle class help the poor....hell they cannot even imagine being that way, much less spell it or give a tinkers damn about it/them!!!! VA Cane

Regarding the Pres, I am glad he likes hoops, and picks brackets...that he is in touch with. He is a nice guy, good man, great Dad and husband....I like him as a person and would love to blow the froth off a cold beer with him....just not convinced of leadership...seeing the world as a warm fuzzy place...its north its cold cruel and always calculating to find the weak spots and cracks.

My Dad did Soviet and espionage for many years...hes been to the USSR....and may have killed a few of them. Before he died, he told me despite what you may think, they may seem weak now, but they are not. The KGB and secret police run and always will run the Soviet Union....and you can never trust them until they are all dead...for certain as they are an evil stain upon the world. That can also be said about the people who run this country.
The Soviets are brutal up front make no qualms about it thieves and murderers; The Chinese are as well.....but they are just so much more subtle and secretive about it.

VA Cane

Berricane,

I could not use that term for myself....I want things done the right way...laws enforced, common sense policies, strong economy, fair taxes, well prepared but not bloated military....and tolerance of all....but at this stage in the game, the talons of darkness and evil are too deep into the hearts and minds of our Reich.....

I have my home here, but I am planning a move to be on my farm of 300 acres in no mans land. I can farm, hunt fish play R and R as loud as I want got fresh spring water and it will be a place where I can do what I please without govt intervention....I can have my own world the way I want it. I will obey the laws just leave me alone with the over regs and madated BS.

VA Cane

I was a History/Econ major, Poli Sci minor....and all you need to do is read the Constitution and use common sense re: policies and people......the problem we have is we cannot do that. The left sees everything as a warm fuzzy aw shucks howdy doody all else equal Socialism dream and the right sees everything as start a war different is wrong suppress the masses sit straight dont ask questions Nazism....I despise both cater to neither....and though I go by the basic rules....I am gonna do pretty much what I want....not what someone tries to tell me to do....I am like Keith richards quote...your laws really do not apply to me

Nigerian, while we might not agree on slants, angles, accomplishments, etc ( what some see as positive may be seen by others as not) I will agree on two things: you have a right to your opinion and if I ever insult it I am wrong and apologize, two it is probably best we keep our points and opinions focused on and about the central idea of this blog: UM Sports......and let the others rest where they may. Even if we do stray from the subject, it is best we keep our comments general, positive and neutral. Blog on my friend...enjoy the day and life to the fullest!!!!! VAC

SOUP

NOW BACK TO UM SPORTS!!!

VA Cane

We are going to hit the field for some agilities drills and activities that revolve around the core of championship football....FUNDAMENTAL FOOTBALL!!!!!

Too bad we think 40 speed stars and swag are what wins.....not in this old boys book!!!!

We will be playing for another title while AG and co make travel plans with the local bus company to get to another minor bowl to play another minor opponent!!! Unless they get the fundamentals down and teach aggressive attack schemes with assignment specific football...its easy.....know the fundamentals, each person do their specific job in an attack aggressive punishing manner as part of the big picture ie TEAM not ME.....thats how you win at a 97% click and dominate your peers....thats the only way we see it here.....

That being said, I am like you. I don't back off nothing....thats how we play football!!! I have learned over time not to blunder and crash into others by espousing things not well thought out; I can converse football forever and know my game.....the politics are not always right or wrong but rather opinions that can go many different directions. Have a great day I going to get my boys ready for another big year....all my respect to you NigerianCane....VAC

Old Skool

Damn is there ever a picture in which T Sully doesn't look like he's having a good time.

Of course if I surrounded myself with beautiful women I'd look that way too.

Old Skool

Amidst all this talk of politics, I might as well add a history lesson

The History of the Middle Finger:

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting inthe future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew'(or 'pluck yew').

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew!

Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'

And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing.

Although 'labiodental' is an actual word in used phonetics, it sounds like something I'd rather perform than write.

Terrance Sullivan

Old Skool thanks bruh. I try to enjoy life as much as possible.

The kids at UM spring practice while older bigger faster stronger.....not by much....have not got a clue as to what it takes to be champions .....poor coaching preparation fundamentals dedication.... amazing my kids football knowledge retention preparation dedication and commitment to winning and punishing people.....so far ahead of AG and staff......must be the coaching.....we are all equal out here there is no favorite or partiality re: coaches or players....its all about hitting hurting and winning.....I am in mid season form...so are my kids...that what our advantage is....AG and Canes want someone to give it to them....VA Cane and Panthers we take it from you....we rob your soul and crush your body and psyche...we beat your AZZ every way possible.....and never say a friggin word!!!

Ryan Williams said after Thursday’s practice that he had received all the first-team reps through five days of spring ball. That changed Saturday, with Kevin Olsen working with the starters on one possession early in the day. He led the offense in a two-minute drive, culminating in a TD pass to Herb Waters. He then resumed working with the backups for the rest of practice.

“We're going to mix him in a little bit,” Al Golden said. “We gave him the two-minute today and didn't tell him. We wanted him to just keep his poise and try to assess the situation. He had no timeouts, needed a touchdown. I thought he did a good job. We were up against it there on fourth-and-eight and he came through and made a play, which was good."

Golden mentioned that Olsen's approach is "drastically different" from last season. How so? "His maturity, his energy, getting ready to play," Golden said.

Golden said Thursday that Ryan Williams remains ahead in the quarterback competition. Coaches and players have praised his maturity, improved arm strength, accuracy (which has been off at times this spring), knowledge of the offense and ability to make pre-snap adjustments. Williams threw a 35-yard TD pass to D’Mauri Jones on Saturday.

### Among those eliciting praise from Golden on Saturday: freshman cornerback Ryan Mayes (“he’s done a great job; as smart as can be; long”); safety Jamal Carter “light years” ahead of last year in regard to “maturity, preparation” and is a “physical, explosive player”); linebacker Thurston Armbrister (“playing well and fast”); linebacker Raphael Kirby; ends/outside linebackers Tyriq McCord and Al-Quadin Muhammad (“growing up right now”); and Dallas Crawford (adjusting to safety and “done a lot in a very short period of time.”)

### McCord and Muhammad have been competing at one end spot on first and second down, but both are being used together on third down. "We're not afraid to put Chick (Anthony Chickillo) inside and get him in a one-on-one matchup against a guard, (Ufomba) Kamalu is doing well in that instance as well," Golden said. "We're going to find the best grouping."

### Injured Olsen Pierre is expected to resume practicing next week.

Yeah, I'm usually all for poetic license, hyperbole, etc. But the plane thing was a touch drastic... I don't mean to speak for VAC but I find it hard to believe he actually wishes the plane reached Capitol Hill and all the politicians had died. I think he is simply making the point had the entity of the govt gone poof, we would be no worse and likely better off. (I hope...)

VA Cane

I am glad to hear good reports on defenders and on Olsen....these are big areas we need to show improvement....I do not think I can watch another UM game and witness the worst defense I have ever seen.....it was very painful.....they were awful to say the least

Huh, I was gonna post something similar in the "Chick debate" from last blog. IMO, I think Chick is a better matchup against Guards & Tackles, than TEs. TRUE TEs are usually the most athletic & best blockers on the O-Line, so why not exploit a mismatch against a Guard or Tackle.

VA Cane

I think it is good to get Olsen in the mix....what if Williams gets hurt...or is ineffective.....last year is a prime example Morris started out good...but the ankle really was a problem....and he became ineffective....and you had nobody to put in to QB....he ended the season poorly.....unprepared to say the least....poor coaching poor preparation.....I have 2 well prepared QBs and I run both during the game......just to throw confusion in there....and I have a backup and an emergency QB to run the basics....the Boy Scouts say be prepared....We are....glad to see UM preparing

VA Cane

UMike no problem with you intervention....we need to stick to football and all sports UM.....politics involve too much emotion they dont matter anyway cause nobody up there really listens or cares

VA Cane

Well Chik needs to be in the mix we need 8 good DL people getting in the game.....we get too tired in 4Q get him in mathchups he can win and exploit.....and coach him on some technique. We are horrible D coaches.....they must all be amputees......cause we never use our hands ever...line LBs or DBs.....we just push....lean on the OL....we play 30s football no busting a receivers ass......and even our LBS are poor with hand use.....I am not a fan of Barrow at all....good player in the day....AZZ as a person must think hes done it all....NOT.....boy our LB play is awful..... such poor tacklers, so fart of the ball, cannot cover anyone especially TEs.....just bad coaching

VA Cane

so far off the ball.... my bust.....Barrow is my least fav coach, never liked him as a person....asked him for a sig once in Bburg....pushed my hand away...Gino, Sappy, Thomas, Copeland all were great, glasd rto sign they were only winning by 30 or so starters out....Gino hurt his wrist and still signed...was laughing joking.....Butt Head Barrow was an ASS....still is an Ass.....very weeak position coach for a guy who was good....need to put him in recruiting only cause his LBs are pitiful tacklers and cover guys...you know it too.....

No because if you've followed them over the past few years they excite us with wins in game 1, then lose the next 2. Similar to the fsu series. Also for the last few years we have had the worrisome trend of losing way too many weekday games. We never used to lose those and the real good teams very rarely lose weekday games.

### Another example of how much UM coach Al Golden cares about his players: We hear that when Hunter Knighton collapsed and lost consciousness earlier this month, Golden spent two nights in the hospital with him.

### Golden, on new defensive tackle Calvin Heurtelou: “Oh my God! Calvin’s really strong!” But Herald freelancer David Furones, who was at Saturday’s practice, said coaches were getting on Heurtelou hard and that he wasn’t coming off the snap hard enough.

“You’ve been here for seven practices!” defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio was overheard saying, per Furones. “This is what we brought you in for.”

UM needs Heurtelou to play better than the tackles who haven’t done much here (Earl Moore, Jelani Hamilton, Corey King), unless any of those three significantly improve.

“It’s time for me to wake up and help this team,” said Hamilton, a former four-star recruit. Golden has said as much about Hamilton, without the “wake up” part. UM people expect Olsen Pierre and summer arrival Michael Wyche to be the team's top two d-tackles.

4-Real

Damn DARK CLOUD!

Go Canes

F
BY DAVID FURONES
SPECIAL TO THE MIAMI HERALD

Some of the performances by the UM football team’s defense last season had fans calling for the firing of defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio. After all, the Hurricanes gave up more than 500 total yards in five of their last six games.

When coach Al Golden said he would retain D’Onofrio and the entire staff at his end-of-the-year press conference, Golden alluded to improvement coming in the form of continuity, incoming talent and development of current personnel.

Through seven spring practices in Golden’s fourth season with Miami, those improvements are beginning to come to fruition.

“The group, overall, there’s more collaboration, there’s more communication, there’s less mental errors and they’re just executing a lot better right now,” Golden said.

The communication more evident thanks to group text messages sent amongst the players on defense during time off. Although players compete against each other for positioning on the depth chart, the texts involve upperclassmen and younger players alike trying to get better as a unit.

Junior defensive tackle Jelani Hamilton, who is trying to become a starter and finally feeling healthy after battling knee issues his first two seasons, said this is the first time he has seen this level of leadership and cohesiveness.

“The fact that we’re talking to each other off the field, it brings greater communication on the field,” junior safety Deon Bush added.

The linebackers appear to be the strongest unit at this point. At Saturday’s practice, Thurston Armbrister was seen in a black jersey, which symbolizes a starter and/or leader on defense — making it four linebackers joining Denzel Perryman, Raphael Kirby and Alex Figueroa.

Kirby, who spent most of last season behind Jimmy Gaines at middle linebacker, is now playing on the weak side while Perryman, who opted in the offseason not to enter the NFL Draft to return for his senior season, mans the middle. Armbrister and Figueroa will battle it out on the strong side.

However, if you ask quarterback Ryan Williams, he said the secondary he has to compete against is currently the top unit.

Sophomore Jamal Carter got his black jersey back for Saturday’s practice after losing it temporarily. According to Golden, the 6-1, 207-pound safety is coming into his own this spring.

“It’s lightyears right now, just his maturity, his preparation,” Golden said. “He’s experienced now, so he’s playing with a lot more poise, and he is a physical, explosive [safety].”

Carter, who was carrying his 8-month-old son after practice, says having a baby has accelerated his maturity. It’s evident on the field, as well. He had a sack and laid loud hits on wide receiver Herb Waters and running back Walter Tucker on Saturday.

“Right now I know the game better. I’m trying to be a playmaker this year,” said Carter, allowing Jamal Jr. to have sips of his Gatorade. “I have more football IQ. I’m more loose. The game has slowed down.”

With several starters returning and plenty more emerging as potential starters, it appears D’Onofrio should have the weapons he needs at his disposal for a successful season.

THIS AND THAT

• Defensive tackle Olsen Pierre did not return to practice after making an early exit Tuesday, limping off the field. Golden said he should come back next week.

• Waters was a full participant for the first time all spring.

• Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Olsen took snaps with the first team like Golden said he would on Thursday, although Ryan Williams remains solid as the No. 1 quarterback. Olsen was thrown into a two-minute drill and converted a 4th-and-long on a drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to Waters.

• Practice, which lasted about two-and-a-half hours, ended with linemen making comical attempts to field punts. Anthony Chickillo made a diving catch near the sidelines while questionably waving his right hand in the air for a fair catch. And Hamilton did a Ray Lewis dance as his teammates mobbed him after successfully hauling in his attempt.

@smillerdegnan: ⚾In case U missed it, #UM #Canes CF Dale Carey's spectacular catch that saved 2 runs in win vs No. 3 UVA was ESPN's Top-10 No. 4 play.

Group texts. The stuff of Champions. Could you imagine the 85 bears if they could group text? My god, that d would have scored more than any offense. Too bad.

coaches were getting on Heurtelou hard and that he wasn’t coming off the snap hard enough.
“You’ve been here for seven practices!” defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio was overheard saying, per Furones. “This is what we brought you in for.”

Love hearing this....see football for fans is 40 times, stars, stats from meaningless HS schedules and opponents, and BS Under Armor games....but I am not a fan...I coach and want to see people who claim to be coaches do the same.

...maybe the vibes I am sending from VA are getting to this staff. This is coaching FUNDAMENTALS....you know the things that win games championships? All the BS fan data and chatter dont mean shit....this is the start of championship football....your lines.

You do not have to have Brady Rogers Dorsey Bernie at QB....you can have a good solid QB....no line play that is strong intense grounded in fundamentals...loser!!!

The start of Championship football is your OL DL. A PERFECT STANCE and a quick low hard aggressive first move is so important....this is violins playing the orchestra swelling......UM coaches stressing the basics Go Canes now you are coaching in the big time!!! Awesome!!!

I really like some of what I hear coming out of spring....Dno sounds like he is yelling geting fired up.....you got to show the way for your players....you got to feel the passion the intensity you do no berate them.....you drive them to wards goals by leading with the intensity you want on the field.....I am not a laid back and wasted coach....I love the game love my kids and we love to achieve together intensely

This is an intensely together sport....its TEAM baby....you do not win with 1 or 2 cats doing it all.....Even the Heat...Lebron and Wade yes they are eyes on....but they have great role players who are sound in FUNDAMENTALS that are always there.....the core the foundation that allows the big guys to use their great talent to rise in the big moments

TEAM
Together Everyone Achieves Mightily

I watched that video - nice! IMO, which is by no means expertise, Chick looks like the only DL out there that actually looked slow, and was unable to get off his blocker. Kamalu looks really good! the DB's, Howard, Carter and Burns also looked real good to me. Hertelou does look extremey strong. Couldn't figure out who #90 was - I liked him but couldn't find that number on any roster. PS Game tonight vs VA at 7:00.

Good to see a little humor with the big fellas catching punts.....it is probably funny but actually a very good drill for them....they need to participate in these kind of drills, as it gives them more time and experience with the ball....the magic bean is important to have. Good job staff!!!
