I could see them doing it or dropping in class like schools like Villanova and university of Chicago.

That's an academics first school if there's ever been one.

Well I think thats where the NCAA must go away....they do nothing to generate the income they benefit from it. You eliminate the NCAA. Schools, which are the corporation will benefit most as they are at the top have the most risk and exposure....and then the athletes, who are getting value in exchange are employees, are paid via scholarship benefits get the tuition, books etc...and some more $....but they will still be paid less....capitalism. Ford, Apple, Microsoft....the top people, the management get paid the most....though they really produce little. Donna, profs...they are the top dogs....they will always get the most money...AG and staff...though they really produce very little in what they do....smoke and mirrors record, say top 50 team...maybe...they still get the money....they guy at the bottom even though thats who we go see....who produce the game..Ford...worker makes car...Apple worker makes phone...MS worker makes system...they get the lowest amount for their effort....thats capitalism.....risk and reward....for all your pontifications maybe you do not understand markets business or reality....or maybe you are a socialist/communist who believes in Marx Lenin...don't know, don't care. I deal in markets values money exchange capitalism every day. You are a market participant whether you know it or not. I deal in market data not wordy or superficial market comparisons...I deal in what is real....so BIOYA smartass!!!!!!

I think there is a position that works....get rid of the ultimate fat cat NCAA not needed too much BS too many BS rules do nothing gain everything.....let conferences and schools set it up so it is not all in the lap of 1 group.

Lurker

VA, no offense, but in all your pontificating, you forgot to mention fair value in terms of what revenue a football team generates.

The NCAA is a multi-billion dollar organization, with most of their revenue (licensing, merchandise, television, etc) generated as a direct result of, primarily football, with basketball a distant second.

While I am not in favor of this unionization for various reasons, to blow off the sentiment so easily with wordy and superficial market comparisons is useless. It's better to discuss a compromise position because the NCAA has no moral high ground here, they are simply trying to retain and protect their billion dollar revenue stream.

30CINCO

just checked with someone who went to UM free due to his mom working for UM, he said he did have to pay taxes on the tuition portion, so there it is.

VA Cane

Its a tough call....but key is what I said...appraisal concept...Free Market Concept...Value in Exchange....it is well defined to me, but this is what I do...I do not make markets I measure markets....and they athlete is getting a value in exchange for service....and it is fairly good terms...never pay it back, covers a lot of things, you do something you love...its really not like digging a ditch or really working...labor of love....If these people are smart they would accept what id given for FREE...but ask for an extra allotment from jersey sales, games etc....say $1,200 to $1,500 a month.....or get the free ride, and more $....and be an employee and pay tax....cause thats the real world..

Northwestern kids, if they are employees...they are not real good ones....in short they sucked in football hell they were 5-7....so since they are not real good they need to have the "salary prorated" and not only pay tax on it....but pay some back since the company NWU did not profit regarding the record....have to pay some back.

Might be the same at the U.....9-4 smoke and mirror record...Defense was one of the worst in the country....shareholders did not get their moneys worth....need to pay tax give some back for lackluster performance.....bowl game was a waste of time and money should have stayed home...they sucked....

There are many ways to look at this...and I am not big on these coaches getting paid millions to coach either....there has to be some common ground...but I played HS college and I know the way it works....its not as bad as people want to make it out....just needs to be tweeked sensibly

j.w.

30- I'm not a tax guy, but I'm pretty sure people get taxed on benefits they receive even if there is no cash given. Example, co. gives you a car, you owe taxes for the amount you use it for personal use. Or, Barry Bonds used to get 10-20 "free" flights across the country for his family to attend his games. That was a taxable benefit.
I have no idea how this will apply to the football players. Imagine if the non-revenue athletes get hit with a tax bill?

VA Cane

Value in exchange is a term we sometimes use in appraisals and cash flow theories regarding income producing..ie commercial property.

If you are a SA, your tuition, room, board, meals etc is being paid....and you play football for this value in exchange. Since you are being paid a decent amount in exchange...whats UM tuition for Non SA....$50,000 I dont know now....x 4 = $200k.

You have no mortgage, real deductions except the individual....so you need to pay tax on the money you are working for. Now I think they need a little more $ to help with things...movies, pizza, some clothes and that sort....and if they need to go home for illness funeral etc it should be paid....but these guys do live decent....and if they want a union....and the wage scale could be figured..then they need to pay the piper. The bottom line is you cannot expect to get a free ride....and call yourself an employee...and if you are true to heart...football is not a job...its a labor of love...I love it and did it....you are getting a value of an education in exchange for playing that others are not getting they got to pay...so since you "work" you need to pay taxes....and there should be no tax break for mom and pop....you got to face the music my friends

VA Cane

Kind of precarious situation...ok let them unionize....they are get value in exchange for performance that others have to pay back ie regular students....therefore they should get taxed on it as it is income to pay for something.....and let them pay SS on it....and of course they need insurance...I am paying them $x per year they need to have Obamacare....they are getting money free to go to school in exchange for playing...while I think they need more....if they need a union then they need to get taxed and insured on their own...see how they like that

THIS could be the difference between this ruling being good for students or bad for them:

I've spoken with one tax expert who said student athletes could get taxed on full value of scholarship if now employees - another said no.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | March 26, 2014 at 04:25 PM
---------------------------------------------
I would imagine a tax would need to be handed down only if actual money is paid for the "service".

Example: An employee who works for UM gets free tuition. They get taxed on the weekly check, but I don't think there is a tax on the tuition portion. Maybe someone has more info on how this works today.

He was with a recruit recently and did the homework on the kid as far as what other schools he is interested in and then explained and showed on film why that school's system doesn't work for this kid and it won't get them to the league.

From CIS poster TokenCane on recruiting top kids:

I've spoken to Golden very recently about this and he has said that this is the first time they can recruit with some swag. I asked him what does that mean and he said its time for these kids to realize we were the SEC before the SEC was. We showed everyone how to play and we are almost back there. They firmly believe their top targets are some of the missing pieces as far as depth and immediate contribution.

He is using this type of language and talk to the recruits and I think it is working. It feels like the gloves are off and Golden and company are letting the fists fly. He was with a recruit recently and did the homework on the kid as far as what other schools he is interested in and then explained and showed on film why that school's system doesn't work for this kid and it won't get them to the league.

Every kid that gets in front of him is saying the same thing like damn he really gave me something to think about.

Go Canes I agree. IDK if Grace will beat out anyone this year, but he is great in coverage and a good tackler and will see the field a lot imo.

Said earlier I think Grace and Burns will establish themselves this year. Really hope that happens cause if it does it will be the first real sign of competition where a younger, better athlete is supplanting someone.

Last year we no one beat out guys like Gaines, Highsmith and Rogers. Can't have that continue. Need young guys to step up and beat someone out of a spot.

That's good for our program IMO.

Duke Johnson hard at work this spring
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami running back Duke Johnson has not taken one rep so far this spring, but that hasn’t stopped him from working just as hard as his teammates do during practice.

Johnson has transformed himself in the weight room, bulking up to 205 pounds -- 10 pounds more than a season ago and 25 pounds heavier than he was as a freshman in 2012. The broken ankle that sidelined him for the final five games of last season and spring ball perhaps has spurred a new level of commitment in the weight room.

"He’s done an amazing job with his body," coach Al Golden said. "He’s made a commitment with that. He’s always been really good with blitz pickup and things of that nature, he’s got a great stiff arm. But he’s made a conscious effort to get stronger and bigger and more durable so I’m excited about him."

Golden said Johnson should be ready to go by next month, but there remains a chance he could participate in some spring practice drills in the next few weeks. Of course, Miami already knows what it has in Johnson, who goes into 2014 as one of the top returning players in the ACC. But durability has always been a question, one Johnson worked hard to address last offseason -- when he knew he would be shouldering the bulk of the rushing load.

The ankle injury last November allowed him even more time to work on getting stronger. Johnson said he started working on his upper body strength two weeks after he got hurt against Florida State, trying to use the injury as motivation.

He said strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey and his staff came in on their days off to make sure they were working Johnson as hard as he wanted to be worked. The payoff is in the numbers. Not only is he bigger, Johnson can now complete 18 reps lifting 225 pounds. When he arrived on campus as a freshman, he could complete four. The goal is to get up to 20 by the end of the summer. Though he has not run full speed with the added weight, Johnson says, "I feel a lot more powerful and stronger than I did before I got hurt."

"Coach Golden pushed me to take advantage of the opportunity that was presented," Johnson said. "Being hurt was something I never went through. When someone gets hurt to this extent, you don’t look at it as a positive -- but it was for me. It gave me time to step back, to let the other guys show what they can do and to get myself better, to get my weight up, to make sure I know the playbook in and out, get mentally and physically ready for next year, to get everything prepared for my junior year."

What can we expect out of him in his junior season? Golden points to the three games Johnson had before he got hurt.

"It’s probably not as noticeable to people that don’t watch him every day, but the three games before he got hurt, that was a different Duke Johnson," Golden said. "Anybody that looks at it closely will tell you the way Duke Johnson was running late in the Georgia Tech game, the Wake Forest game, North Carolina before he got hurt -- eight carries for 80 something yards -- and then the Florida State game what he was starting to do in that game before he got hurt, he was running at a different level."

Johnson had 325 all-purpose yards against Georgia Tech, 168 yards against the Deacs and 97 against Florida State. Based on the results on the field last fall and in the weight room this offseason, you understand why perhaps the Miami coaches believe, now more than ever, they can get a career year out of Johnson.

Last season, he was on pace for the second-best single-season rushing performance in school history. If Johnson stays healthy, he is a near lock to reach 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. Expectations surrounding Johnson have always been high. But without even one snap this spring, they have grown just a little bit more. Johnson is coy when asked for his rushing goals this upcoming season, but he does admit he has a list of records he can reach taped inside his locker.

"First things first," Johnson says. "I want to help my team win."

As anybody who watched last season knows, a healthy Johnson gives Miami a shot to win plenty.

Miami Hurricanes to begin installation of artificial turf field
by Matt Porter

After receiving enough donor support, UM will in April begin installing an artificial turf surface at its on-campus Greentree Practice Fields facility.

The scope of the project, which is part of UM’s $7 million “Victory Fund” fundraising initiative: replace one of the three grass fields with in-fill turf. The work is expected to be completed this summer.

Greentree’s grass fields are not in good shape, pockmarked with holes and dirt patches. Because of wear and tear on those surfaces, UM’s football team occasionally practices at the neighboring Cobb Soccer Stadium and the school’s baseball home, Mark Light Field.

Aside from easing wear on those surfaces, a turf field would simulate game conditions in a handful of ACC stadiums.

Miami is still attempting to raise funds for several Victory Fund projects, including light towers to surround the field and a dining hall for UM’s 400 athletes.

The school also wants to install a facility containing four cold-water recovery pools, which officials say are “necessary for the hot and humid climate of South Florida.” Currently, UM football players recover from hot-weather workouts in ice tubs under tents behind the practice field.

Greentree underwent a $2 million renovation in 1998, which installed three old-school turf fields (since replaced with grass).

Last year, UM opened the $14.7 million Schwartz Center, a facility that includes meeting rooms, academic areas, locker room space and training facilities.

I've bitched about the DT's for so long, I knew somebody else would take the lead. Now that, that's taken care of I'm on to the LB's and they share in the blame of our lack luster defense. I see where we've racked up 5 average rated guys so far and hopefully they will earn higher accolades as time goes on. Where's the top dogs? If by some miracle we can lure a couple big fish at the LB position, the we would be cooking with peanut oil. I don't think we will ever go back to back years , luring a top DT or LB. University of Miami Debate National Finalists
American Debate Association National Championships, Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia, 3/14-16

On Sunday March 16th, the UM Novice Debate Team of Barbara Puodzius and Anna Ivanova advanced to the final round of the American Debate Association National Championships tournament hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. In route to the championship round, Barbara and Anna compiled a 4-2 record in the preliminary rounds, scoring wins over Liberty University, Vanderbilt, Boston College and James Madison. They defeated a team from George Mason University in the round of 16, before facing the top George Mason team in quarterfinals. UM gave GMU only their 2nd loss in 20 debates, advancing into a semifinal match with rival Wake Forest. UM won that debate as well, advancing into a final round debate with the other Wake Forest team. UM lost a close 2-1 decision in finals, but their names will be engraved on the permanent American Debate Association trophy as 2014 finalists.

In the Junior Varsity division, David Silverman and Spencer George rolled through the preliminary debates, earning a 6-0 record and top seed. As top seed, they earned a bye into the semifinals, where they were unfortunately upset by George Mason on a split decision.

National JV/Novice Debate Tournament, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, 3/8-10

At the National JV/Novice Debate Tournament, the UM Novice Team of Barbara Puodzius and Ashley Park won 5 of their 7 preliminary debates to advance as the seventh seed into elimination rounds making it into the quarterfinals. Their record included wins over The University of Rochester, Liberty, and Capital University of Ohio. In the octofinals, UM won a 3-0 decision against the US Military Academy, but were upset in the quarterfinals by The University of West Virginia. Also representing UM was the team of Anna Ivanova and Anna Shah. This team had a winning record winning 4 of 7 debates, but missing the elimination rounds by one place (they were the 17th seed; top 16 advance). They defeated West Virginia, CUNY, John Carroll, and Capital.

Spencer George and David Silverman competed in Junior Varsity, winning debates against NYU, Cornell and James Madison.

National Rankings

On the strength of these successes and a great year, UM Debate is ranked 17th Nationally by the Cross Examination Debate Association, third in the Southeast Region. With 106 points, this is the best finish by a UM Team in almost 20 years.

Now here in Richmond area, most white people do not use the word to refer to black people. Uneducated people do here....but home in the mountains it is common ground that is the word to use.....even if they like the guys.

I get it and accept the way people use it...but my life, my players team and program....I am trying to make my guys aware of racism, and to not be part of it. I want them to grow to be good MEN of all colors, educated MEN of all colors, great MEN on the field in the classroom and in life....and to realize we ALL are the same...and carry the message that I teach onto the field into the classroom and throughout their lives long after I am gone....thats my legacy....

a good man who loved his players regardless of color creed religion gender....and taught them to be champions on the field in the classroom and in life by living the truth honoring respecting and caring for others....by example and by teaching it to be carried on as Coach taught them....JMO

Dude on a Pale Horse

The "N" word... Nole? I hate that word.

Go Canes

The n word is a weak man's word.

It says so much more about the person saying it than the person receiving it.
