4-Real

Dude, we have been out-recruiting Oregon 4 nearly a decade now without an on-campus stadium & top-notch facilities. Juss sayin...

Dude on a Pale Horse

We agree. I'm just saying Oregon wasn't even competing for 'ships before.

Hassan

Wasted scholly... kids needs to be a walk-on. UAB & Weber State???? A big reach imo.. hope I am wrong cause we could use the ship, but seems like an awfully big reach to me

Mike I can see why you would want to use the scholly on a higher rated prospect, we all want to win and the higher rated guys help us do that. Let me show you why this might not be a reach though

The kid was less then 240 lbs playing last year, you do not get too many offers to play OL at that size, but he might be a really talented kid so if you can develop him then it is worth it.

Which brings me to the next part, he will be a center, With Mcdermott out we are very short at that position, playing center at this level requires about 2 years of development, this kid will not be asked to do anything other then get bigger and learn to be a center for the next couple of years. in 2 years he might be 295 ish and a very strong guy, providing quality depth along the line. Unheralded guys like this make big splashes all the time at the center position at schools nationwide, even in the NFL the center position is not respected as much and undrafted guys make big splashes there routinely. The staff did not owe this kid anything, it is well after signing day, they know their scholarship and depth issues better then anyone. They also know the heat is turned up more then ever for the team to win I think they would not have pulled the trigger on this kid if they did not see something.

herbieibis

We shouldn't be in the situation trying to bring scraps in to fill the ship limits. If anything the kid could of been a walk on long snapper. You tell me we recruit all year long and we can't fill our ship limits on or before signing day? We're dropping the ball to much and relegating our selves to reaches. This kid didn't seem to be to much into his books and still may not qualify.

CaneRock

Grimsley?...His HS coach said, "Miami is taking him as a center until he adds more weight to play guard." What I think is going on here, is we're trying to stack the OLmen this year, so we can offer more skill guys next year. 2015 is LOADED! at the skill positions. Besides, you gotta have a practice squad, too, and Grimsley might fit that' billin for now. But honestly, if we really wanted a Center of the future, we should've just offered the kid outta Central...Raul Diaz. Diaz was the best Center in the State.

NativeCane

Tyler Grimsley- Dudes a hard working guard that finishes his guy, also has a frame to put on a lot of weight!

Right on cue! Dude U are SO predictable.

Posted by: SOUP | March 10, 2014 at 10:14 PM

And just like you, Ohio, Go Canes, CR etc etc are ALL predictable lol.... Some guys on here will say a guy is great just because he came to Miami. If that same kid signed with UF we could trash them for wasting a ship lol... but hey, lets be excited we stole one from UAB and Weber State haha

Hassan... I see you points, and can understand all that. And like I said, I hope I am wrong, its just my opinion that if we have limited spots, you dont get a project player... but hope I wrong..

Did Go Canes finally quit and run away? Come back Go Canes lol

UMike

SOUP.. I call it like it is... if we could of picked up a late addition like say Cold Elder, I would of given the staff their props like I did last year... but no way am I getting excited about a kid who should be playing D2 ball.

UMike

I mean, kid plays in Florida and couldnt pick up offers from USF, UCF, FAU, FIU etc...but again, I hope I am wrong. Would be nice to come back in a year or two, or three and eat crow over this.

About the stadium, IDK... even without the upgrades, we still have an NFL stadium to sell recruits. And all the upgrades to the facilities on campus help, but I dont think NOT having an on campus stadium hurts us...not with the South Florida kids were after.. imo

UMike

Ariz...

**Here are some of my thoughts on the B2G Sports 7-on-7 tournament from over the weekend. These are my observations from Saturday.

**For the second week in a row, Da’Vante Phillips blew me away. His ability to go up and get the ball at its highest point is special and also snatch the ball with his hands away from his body really makes up for his lack of “elite” speed. Phillips made an incredible catch over Tyrek Cole in the back of the end zone where he just manhandled Cole. FSU leads.

**Speaking of Cole, I like him as a prospect, but I don’t think he is anywhere near a 5-star type corner like some (including myself) were making him out to be earlier in the process. He’s still a top-level corner, but he lacks size (strength) and does not have elite speed. Cole does have extremely long arms and elite cover skills.

**I have been one of JaQuan Johnson’s biggest advocates for a few years now, but some have questioned whether or not he would be big or fast enough to sustain is level of play at the next level. I never worried about his athleticism or size, but those critics need to be put to sleep. It is evident that Johnson is putting in major work in the weight room. He has really grown into his frame (says he is weighing 185 now) and wants to get to 190 for his season. His straight-line speed may not blow people away, but his change of direction is elite as well as his instincts. He is always around the football.

**Cavin Ridley (younger brother of Calvin) is a mystery man to most recruiting fans. I’ve mentioned him a few times recently on the site but finally got the chance to speak with him on Saturday. Cavin just transferred to Monarch from Stranahan, which was an expected move as he will now be with his brother and Shawn Burgess-Becker. As most would guess, him and Calvin are planning to play together in college. Cavin seems infatuated with UF and has Miami in the mix as well, but interestingly enough says he has not been in contact with any schools up to this point. There has been talk for months that Calvin Ridley would have to go to prep school instead of playing high school ball next season. There is no absolute confirmation on whether or not that will happen, but the talk from Saturday was that it is still a major possibility. Cavin is in a similar situation where he is older than his 2016 classification and we have been told that his transcripts are even worse off that Calvin’s at this point. The positive is that both have time to correct their situation in the classroom. The interview with Cavin will be up this week.

**A prospect who caught my eye this weekend was Flanagan’s Devin Gil (2016). Gil was playing safety for the Fire and is already a legitimate 6-1, 195. I spoke to Gil and he knows that schools will be looking to move him to linebacker, which he is open to doing. Gil’s frame along with his ball skills and athleticism look like an intriguing combination. He likes Miami a lot and that interview will also be posted this week.

**In some general recruiting news, keep an eye on the name Ben Humphreys from Mater Dei (Ca.). Humphreys (6-3, 210) is a 2015 4-star S/LB prospect who is friends with Brad Kaaya and Kaaya has let the staff know about him. I exchanged messages with Humphreys tonight and he is very interested in Miami. His highlights are impressive - http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1442761/ben-humphreys

Go Canes

I don't have a single opinion about this kid because I've never seen him play. So i can't call him a waste, a project or a stud.

And no I didnt give up and run away, just have no desire to have a conversation with people who take stadium talk and suddenly change it to us losing because Golden talked to Penn State AFTER the season ended or some nonsense statement made just to incite confrontation.

There is no logic or ability to stay on topic with some people if the conversation exits their comfort zone.

30CINCO

I don't care if it's as a walk on/preferred walk on/scholarship/. You want to be a part of the fam and help us win., I will root for you...#WelcomeToTheU Tyler Grimsley.

UMike

30... I will root for the kid since he is a Cane, but its my opinion we could of got better, especially with limited scholarships. But since he is here, I will root for the kid.

UMike

Go Canes... I didnt see anyone say we lost anything because of Golden and PSU. You said our stadium situation hurts us, or gives us a disadvantage in recruiting and the other guys simply said that Golden flirting with PSU hurt recruiting... probably more so than our stadium. So if you can turn stadium talk into recruiting and how it hurts us, they why couldnt they talk about other legit things that hurt us in recruiting? That isnt inciting confrontation lol... that is good ol back and forth lol... Eventhough it may be complete BS, Valentine and his coach specifically said he decommited because the PSU thing. It was also mentioned that if not for Coley we would of lost a lot more guys, including Yearby. So if someone says the PSU thing hurt recruiting after you said the stadium hurts recruiting, how is that inciting a confrontation?

Got to love Da Space!!!

UMike

Hopefully we are done with our late additions, we got TONS of 2015 talent to work on, should be a epic class if we win games.

Ohio_Cane

And just like you, Ohio, Go Canes, CR etc etc are ALL predictable lol.... Some guys on here will say a guy is great just because he came to Miami. If that same kid signed with UF we could trash them for wasting a ship lol... but hey, lets be excited we stole one from UAB and Weber State haha

And in typical predictable UMike fashion, U jump to conclusions assuming we just wasted a scholly because a kid only had offers from 2 crap schools. Read about the kid before U throw him under the fire:

OL Tyler Grimsley
Clay High School (Green Cove Springs, FL)
6'3/267

Wasn't recruited heavily because he only weighed 238 as a Junior, and didn't have qualifying test scores. He got his scores after NSD, and his coach got in touch with Barrow...and the staff decided to offer.

He's a competitive weightlifter, and has bests of 405 on Bench, and 500 on Squats. Per his coach, he has "rare explosive quickness combined with man strength". UM taking him as a C until he puts on more size to move to G.

Ohio_Cane

Under the fire wouldn't be too hot. UNDER the bus, IN the fire. LOL

Ohio_Cane

Tyler Grimsley made 5A first team All State in Florida along OG Isiash Wynn

UMike

Ohio.. I DID read about him.. STILL not impressed, but in typical Ohio fashion any kid the Miami wasnts "is legit", even if only D2 schools noticed him... please. So you can jump to conclusions and say he is legit, but I cant jump to conclusion and say we could of put that scholly to better use?

So he wasnt recruited because his weight as a JUNIOR...what happened his senior year? Sounds like an excuse to me.

Again.. hope I am wrong, we need talent, I just think this is a big reach and not a hidden gem.

UMike

Ohio.. I think under the fire sounds about right lol

CaneRock

UMike, how am I "predictable"? I basically gave the assessment you did, in your post before last...

UMike: "Hopefully we are done with our late additions, we got TONS of 2015 talent to work on, should be a epic class if we win games."

CaneRock: "What I think is going on here, is we're trying to stack the OLmen this year, so we can offer more skill guys next year. 2015 is LOADED! at the skill positions."

And I said it BEFORE! you, so that would make me...CLAIRVOYANT!

UMike

CR, what I meant was we ALL are predictable since we all know, for the most part, how the others feel about recruits, coaches etc.. I really just used your name since you're one of the more popular bloggers

UMike

So kid made All-State and STILL couldnt pick up offers??? I think that makes it worse lol.. and the test score deal is BS cause schools offer kids all the time with piss poor grades and tests scores. If the kid is worth it you offer and hope he gets the scores up or goes to prep.

Ohio_Cane

Kids with bad grades that get offers generally haven't taken their tests to get into college yet and the coaches just hope they get a good enough one. (Example: Derrick Griffin)

This kid had already taken them and didn't have good enough ones to get into even most D2 schools. Coaches knew this and didn't offer.

Look, I'm not trying to say this kid should've been a 5* recruit or something, but a March pickup and added OL depth is great. Worth a scholly.

UMike

Guess we will just have to see. We can re-visit this in 2 years lol

VA Cane

Coaching Dude. That is all.

good morning all...had a tough couple weeks weather here icy snow, been busier much busier....and computer goes on blink. It is a nightmare but ok now. Behind on work big time but grinding.

Little story on how I love and push kids...hopefully the right way.

I took a young man under my wing during football...friend of my son....great kid. His mom passed several years ago....Dad seems to be interested in a woman,Cocaine and beer.....but does come to see the young man wrestle. Anyway he has stayed with us....and wrestling was my other HS thing. I never won it all, but placed 5th as a Jr and 3rd as Sr in state...i was good hell I was a football player.
We cleared the garage and living room, and depending on the cold these were our mats. Dylan wrestles 126....I am 155 so he has been out gunned by a larger old man who's still mean. Needless to say, 2 weekends ago he won the state title...will graduate and has a future. I was not his coach, but his partner his mentor. He says I did it...no way. I may lead my guys...THEY do it. I am so proud of him....again being CHAMPION IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

36 years of coaching this means a lot to me. He could have given up.....but together we worked and shared...and he worked to be a champ. This is why I live for kids around me. Never have I been so thankful for being outgoing interested asking about kids try to help.....I was moved to tears when at the state match he asked me to go with him to get his medal. Dad was there...and hurt....and buzzed. This is Americas problem....we do not care except when the glory comes to us. Hell I dont need any glory....I had mine as a player....and now I am paid 0 $ but I feel like the richest man in the world....just love my boys!!!!

Thanks for listening.

UMike

Good stuff VA

CaneRock

Something else I think happened here, is we struck out on the PWOs (Preferred Walk-Ons), so that left us with no choice but to give up a scholly to Grimsley. And what I mean by "struck out", is a point somebody made yesterday...Miami's too expensive a school, even if you know you're gonna get a scholarship down the line...even if it's for a semester.

UMike

CR.. could very well be.

CaneRock

UMike, I forget the kid's name, or what school He came from, but we offered a kid as a PWO, but He decided to go to USF IIRC. Kid had the same metrics as Grimsley...oh well.

Go Canes

Umike are you actually trying to equate Golden talking to Penn State to the lack of an on campus stadium and our historically woeful facilities?

One is a blip on the screen while the other has been a decades long issue.

UMike

Posted by: Go Canes | March 11, 2014 at 10:18 AM

Go Canes, I wasnt trying to equate anything, I was just pointing out that YOU said something hurt us in recruiting, and the other guys said something else hurts us and then you took your ball and ran home. Miami had the best teams around while having the worst facilities around. RS pulled in a #1 recruiting class and Golden has had numerous top 10-15 classes, all while playing at Sun Life. A rival coach can use the Golden to PSU thing in his favor for years.

Again, I wasnt picking sides about which hurt more etc, but you cant start a topic and then when the next guy adds to it, you say they trying to incite a confrontation lol

Our facilities have been upgraded and we won 5 titles without an on campus stadium.. I dont think it hurts as much as you do.

Ohio_Cane

Berrios made me like him even more with his shot at UiF.

Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman Hunter Knighton has been released from the hospital according to a Facebook post linked to the football player and Miami spokesman Chris Yandle.

Earlier this afternoon, the school tweeted a photo of Knighton's message on Facebook which read, "To everyone that has been praying for the last few weeks thank you. I'm finally out of the hospital. Especially thanks to best family, coaches, doctors and support group for getting me this far."

Knighton was reportedly hospitalized following an off-season workout late last month. Though Miami confirmed he was dealing with a health issue, the school never gave specifics about the lineman's injury or condition citing the family's request for privacy.

Knighton, who is listed on the Hurricanes' roster as being 6-foot-2, 278-pounds, missed the 2013 season after undergoing shoulder surgery in August. He redshirted to retain his eligibility. He is a native of Pottsdown, Penn., and was a two-way lineman at The Hun School

UMike

Hope Hunter makes in back.. wonder if he can play again.

Ohio, yea Berrios is definitely a Cane

Ohio_Cane

Glad to hear Knighton is out and recovering. Scary stuff.

CaneRock

LOL UMike, Go Canes is OFFICIALLY, & ROYALLY!...CONFUSED!

UMike, this whole Go Canes BUMBLEPHUCK! started with Go Canes saying the stadium upgrades were "something positive happening to our program". But SOON! as somebody brought up Golden flirting with PSU, now all of a sudden SL is an albatross. GTFOH!

Some guys just get it. That kid gets it.

Can't wait to see his first TD followed by a 15 yard penalty for saluting at the crowd and/or opponent.

UMike

Now now CR... stop trying to incite a confrontation

Go Canes

All I said was it's been a negative and the stadium upgrades are great for us. Albatross, me anointing players before they play a down and the rest of the crap you make up as you go along then attribute to me are your words.

And actually you're the one who seems confused, especially when one day you say the Gator win was nothing one day then brag about it the next when it helps you make yet another nonesensical point in huge BOLD letters with LOTS of exclamation points!!!!!

UMike

Go Canes.... Did you not say the lack of an on-campus stadium hurt us or is hurting us in recruiting? I do think that is what I read... I then read others say what hurt us was Golden flirting with PSU and our defensive scheme. To me, all they did was give other areas that hurt us in recruiting. I just dont see anyone trying to start anything. I think us giving up 500 yards week in and week out and losing to teams like Duke, UVA etc, not winning bowl games etc is what does the most damage to us in recruiting.

CaneRock

"And actually you're the one who seems confused, especially when one day you say the Gator win was nothing one day then brag about it the next when it helps you make yet another nonesensical point in huge BOLD letters with LOTS of exclamation points!!!!!"

NOPE! I brought up the Gator win, because we BEAT THEY MUTHAPHUCKIN' ASS!, IN SPITE OF! all that YOU SAY! that they have, and all that YOU SAY! that we lack. "Top of the line", YOU DON'T REMEMBER THAT?!..."State of the art", YOU DON'T REMEMBER THAT?! But of course, reading between the lines is not your strong suit.

CaneRock

UMike, that damn Go Canes sees more "clouds" than a SATELLITE! And She has the nerve to call US! "Negative Nazis"?! SHEESH!

Go Canes

And we lost to FSU that has top of the line facilities. What's your point CaneRock?

One win negates a completely obvious point that's been talked about for years?

Answer this easy question then. Has the location of our stadium as opposed to other big time programs been a positive or negative?

Very simple question, with a very simple answer.

No reading between the lines needed!!!!!!

RCCF

What Players Have D'No recruited Specifically and Who is Picking the Defensive Players for this AllGreat Scheme??

RCCF....not tryna start trouble just wanna know..

RCCF

Has the location of our stadium as opposed to other big time programs been a positive or negative?

It hasn't mattered ONE BIT...5Championships say so..and the fact that SunLife is the closest some kids will EVER be to playing in the pros they may look at it as an honor..Never know what kids are thinking until you have laced up with them..

RCCF

Go Canes

No of course it hasn't one bit.

5 ships prove it.

CaneRock

"Answer this easy question then. Has the location of our stadium as opposed to other big time programs been a positive or negative?"

And what happened in Durham, North Carolina again? IOWs, Stadiums don't mean $HIT!...WIN ANYWAY!
