The 20th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 in ACC play after their convincing 6-1 win over No. 56 Boston College on Friday.
“Starting 3-0 is where we want to be,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “The toughest road is a head of us, but we’re happy to start 3-0 in ACC play.” The Hurricanes got victories from the No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles teams, signaling the doubles point in favor of Miami. “I think everyone did a great job,” senior Melissa Bolivar said.
“Everyone fought with a lot of energy and played pretty good tennis and left it all out there. I’m proud of everyone on my team.” 24th-ranked Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque handled Boston College’s Wan-Yi Sweeting and Heini Salonen 8-1 for the first doubles win of the match.
Stephanie Wagner and Brittany Dubins outperformed their Boston College opponents, winning the match 8-2 to give Miami the doubles point heading into singles. 40th-ranked Melissa Bolivar and Kelsey Laurente, playing in the No. 1 doubles slot today, held a 4-3 lead against Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr when their match was stopped.
The Hurricanes remained in control of the match as singles got underway, taking first set leads in five of the six singles matches. No. 40 Laurente was on the top of her game, beating Boston College’s Borr in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Laurente improved her spring singles record to 8-1 and 4-0 at the No. 2 singles position. “I think Kelsey is stepping up and really maturing,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She’s really playing the way we talk about playing tennis—with a lot of energy and a lot of passion. I really think that Kelsey plays better tennis when she brings that level of intensity to the court.”
The 71st-ranked Wagner won her first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 and then turned it up a notch in the second set, cruising to a 6-1 win. The Amberg, Germany native kept her ACC singles record perfect, advancing to 3-0 in conference play. “Steffi was able to make some minor changes in her game that had huge returns in the outcome of her match,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “To be down three set points in the first set and turn it around and take the second set 6-1, that says a lot about her today.”
Miami’s Bolivar controlled her match from start to end, defeating Heini Salonen in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. “I was playing good tennis,” Bolivar said. “I was just playing with confidence and playing my game.” Riobueno put together a solid performance against 91st-ranked Boston College player Katya Vasilyev, defeating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the final singles match of the day.
As far as Carter is concerned, I remember Soldinger saying He had some maturing do do while He was in HS. Not singling Carter out, as ALL freshman have to mature...but Carter not being into the playbook, doesn't surprise me.
And you don't have to change the entire scheme, to accommodate one player. I'm pretty sure they simplified it for AQM & Burns, I seriously doubt those 2 digested the entire playbook their freshman years.
Per EOTU, Soldinger on Carter:
Soldinger said he brought in former Canes running back Clinton Portis to speak to the team earlier this month. Carter, he said, was the only player to miss the meeting.
"Pissed me off," Soldinger said. "I really wanted Portis to talk to him, help get his butt in gear."

Da U... I get your point.. But I think the poster meant.. And what I mean, is if you can simplify the playbook and get the real talent on the field you do it and build on it as that young talent matures. I would never suggest changing the D scheme for just 1 player. But that post was talking about talented players like Carter sitting behing the Highsmith's and Rogers of the world who know the playbook but arent talented enoughto make plays.

Yeah man, that's a stacked HS group.
We had Pisa, an NFL LB playing QB, we could never bring him down in practice. Leon came in after I think. He was so fast... he was small though so I could catch over him. I was 6'2" as a freshman. I played LB growing up. When I made it to HS my 185 pounds was laughable. The freshmen LBs were all 6'3" and 230. We were good. Won a lot of games. Kellen Winslow was a Senior back then. San Diego has always had a lot of good players from O'Side down.

UMike, I wanted to see Grace on the field, but when I saw Him play during the Louisville game, I can see why He didn't play LMAO!

I think we will see an addition by subtraction situation... Carter, Bush, Jenkins, crawford, Hester etc at Safety and no more Rogers and Highsmith. Kirby, Figs and Young and no more Gaines etc etc.

This kid was robbed by the Heisman voters, lol.

For u guys who can actually attend practices. Do the dl practice with the DBS during practice or are they just told to drop
Back I'm coverage or into the flats bc porter, green, and Robinson looked plain silly in coverage. Maybe they should have them practice with the DBS since we create dl/db hybrids

Damn shame too, I think Arthur Agee (Hoop Dreams) would've been a bad ass WR.

Most impressive player to me at today's #Canes practice on offense was RB Gus Edwards. Broke tackles and flashed speed.
Manny Navarro @Manny_Navarro 1m
Edwards is 6-2, 235. Golden said he thinks Edwards can get to 245 and still run. He was clocked at 4.5 according to Golden. #UM

Gibson was discussed here a while back. Comes in as #6 rated QB in 2015 according to The Bleacher Report:
"Scouting Report
As a runner, Gibson is a long strider who takes some time to pick up speed but quickly becomes a major threat when he finds a rushing lane. He typically passes while moving, rarely situated stationary in the pocket.
He occasionally looks restless when contained and forced to remain behind center. While rolling out, Gibson delivers darts with a quick release.
He can chuck the ball downfield but remains a largely unpolished passer. His throws don't consistently come out clean and Gibson's receivers must often work to reel in the ball.
The raw arm strength is apparent. He just needs to harness it.
Recruitment Status
Gibson attended a January junior day at Miami and remains a high priority for the Hurricanes. His offers feature Florida, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Auburn."
