The 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team picked up their first ACC road win of the season in a 6-1 win against the Pittsburgh Panthers on Friday.
The win for Miami (8-2, 5-0 ACC) marks the fifth-straight ACC win of the season and the first one away from Coral Gables.
With a familiar face coaching the Panthers in former Hurricane assistant Alex Santos, Miami quickly notched the doubles point after wins from 24th-ranked Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobeuno as well as Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner.
Albuquerque and Riobueno handled Audrey Ann Blakely and Amanda Wickman 8-2 and Wagner and Lileikite took their match against Jocelyn Lu and Kimmy Borza 8-5.
“Today was a tough match against a good friend,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We were a bit tired after a long travel day yesterday but I think we did a good job for the most part.”
After winning the doubles point, Miami went on to win five of the six singles matches on the day, which Yaroshuk-Tews credited to Miami’s serving.
“We served the best I’ve seen all season and got to the net early in points which we needed to do.”
First to complete her match was 71st-ranked Wagner, who was in dominant form in her 6-0, 6-0 win against Lolade Ogungbesan. With the win, Wagner remained perfect in ACC play and improved her spring singles record to 10-2.
Riobueno, playing in the three-singles slot, also made quick work of her opponent, defeating Amanda Wickman in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. It marks Riobueno’s fifth-straight victory and keeps her record at a perfect 4-0 while playing at the three-singles spot.
Next to complete her win and clinch the match for Miami was Lileikite. In straight sets 6-2, 6-1 against Molly Wickman, Lileikite notched her seventh singles win of the spring.
Playing at the six-singles spot, Albuquerque had little difficulty against Lu, defeating her in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 en route to her team-high 11th win of the season. Albuquerque also extended her team-long winning streak to six.
No. 40 Laurente came up on the losing end of a tough battle against Pitt’s number one player Blakely. After falling 7-5 in the first set Laurente couldn’t recover and dropped the second set 6-1.
Bolivar registered her ninth singles win of the season with a win against Kimmy Borza 6-3, 6-4. The win for Bolivar improves her record at the five-singles spot to a flawless 3-0.
The Hurricanes continue their road trip on Sunday, Mar. 9 when they travel to Raleigh, N.C., for an ACC match against the NC State Wolfpack. First serve on Sunday is set for 11 a.m.

As a girls HS tennis coach myself, with a current run of 4 straight Elite 8 Florida State Finals appearances BTW… (Only one short of the UM Lady tennis' 5 straight Elite 8 appearances.) LOL. I can tell you it's tough to get through seasons with enough talent & depth to even make it to these late season tournaments.
I've seen the Lady Canes in action, & I gotta tell you I'm very proud of what Paige has done with this program over the last few years. (Of course when I was at Miami in the mid 70s, it was Janet Haas, Jodi Applebaum, Sue Epstein, Kim Sands, to name a few… quite the teams then too!)
Looking for the Lady Canes to notch a National Team title soon. (They're defending ACC Champs BTW!)
Let's Go Canes!

On an non-U related topic, what's the craziest thing that's you all have ever stirred up when tending to the yard? For me it was a giant wolf spider, which was subsequently captured and used by my son as a pet for several months.

Tony, only field mice and bees/wasps here. Field mouse came out when I was above his home though, so he didn't make it. Saw him fly across the yard and land on the driveway lol

I once came across a bottle of mustard that had been hiding under a bush in the South Florida sun for some unknown, but very lengthy, period of time. I found it by inadvertently causing it to explode all over my legs. Long-rancid mustard is the kind of stench that haunts one's dreams.

Michelle Kaufman:
“Rarely do you find a group like this year that come in as freshmen, end up being in support roles, stay in those roles throughout their three years and all of a sudden are thrust into the starting lineup and major roles their senior year,’’ he said. “In all my years, I’ve never had a senior class like this one, go from being the seventh through 12th man to now all of a sudden being one through six. That jump is substantial.”

Players keep raving about UM quarterback Ryan Williams. “I don’t think we’ll miss a beat” with Williams replacing Stephen Morris, receiver Phillip Dorsett said Thursday. “He throws an accurate and catchable ball, throws everything on time. Ryan’s arm has gotten a lot stronger. It’s not really a dropoff” from Morris. Dorsett says fans will see for themselves at the April 12 spring game.

AND WE KNEW THIS LAST YEAR!!!
Posted by: SOUP | March 07, 2014 at 08:46 PM
SOUP...when Morris sprained His ankle in 2012, Williams wasn't good enough to replace Him then, either. And frankly, I don't think He was good enough to replace Morris last year...at least over the duration of the season. And frankly again, what difference would He have made any way, we would've lost those same four games that we lost with Morris...AND!, without Duke & PD4. IMO, Williams is just one of those players that needs to exhaust His College eligibility to before He thrives.
Just my 2 pieces of copper on it.

If U wanna just come by the campsite and hang out then late PM early eve would prolly be best for dinner, campfire, drinks, etc.

Anyone else think this we have the most draftable Senior class that we've had in a long time?
Dorsett
Walford
Feliciano
McDermott
Pierre
Perryman
Gunter
We have some draftable underclassmen also.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | March 08, 2014 at 01:48 PM
TD, that's a good point on "draftable Senior class". Hopefully those Seniors, can be a catalyst for 10-11 wins.
Posted by: CaneRock | March 08, 2014 at 02:01 PM
Thanks CR,
There are a couple other draftable guys that just need a big year.
Williams
Chickillo
Sandland
Am I missing anyone?
Chickillo may be draftable right now, depending on the NFL team.

Oh college football, how far away you are...
In the meantime there's this. Check out plays 98, 79, 63, 49 & 9. On the other hand, divert your eyes from 44 & 33.
After watching I felt bad for anyone even attempting to play D against Johnny Football or Jameis Winston.

For you BEERicane,
http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/01/08/3857195/miami-hurricanes-denzel-perryman.html
Says Chickillo was given a 4th to 5th round assessment according to "someone familiar with his situation."
I think 5th to 7th is probably where I'd take him if I were going to. It will depend on how he plays this year and combine workouts if he gets invited.
Chickillo needs a big year, 5+ sacks and a lot of TFLs. I don't think what Miami coaches facilitates a lot of TFLs.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | March 08, 2014 at 03:57 PM

I'd agree with this. Getting drafted so low though is a failure on him and this coaching staff. Remember when people were putting him on par with Clowney?! That's just too funny.

So proud of my Canes basketball team. Most didn't think this team would be anywhere near this good most thought this season would be a complete train wreck, but instead hard work, dedication, and excellent coaching U can maximize the abilities of the team, No this team wasn't last years team but I love their tenacity though. Go Canes!
