Two questions:

1. How many college students from OTHER States go to Gainesville and/or Tallahassee for Spring Break?

2. The next question is: How many college students LEAVE Gainesville or Tallahassee to go to South Florida or South Beach for Spring Break?

YEAH, I THOUGHT SO!

The new recruits coming in look really good on both sides of the ball. I saw Chad and Demetrius recently, and they both seem to be getting bigger. The new defensive recruits should be the anchor of a top 10 defense in the years ahead because they are all really good. Even Darrion Owens will surprise people with hisability to play.

I hope Ice gets his degree bbecause he is one heck of a Football coach and could definitely contribute to UM as a coach. Ice knows how to develop players and how to design a scheme around his players strength. His BTW players were developed and they all improved under him. I am excited about the future

UMike

is it just me or does Ice Harris seem to be marketing himself? If you know the plan is to stay at UM and coach, why go out of your way to tell people this stuff? And he keeps speaking of being at UM "right now" or "at this point". I hope they are able to keep him, just seems like he is marketing himself and putting other schools on notice.

UMike

### UM coach Al Golden said he has given thought to moving Ray Lewis III to running back (where he excelled in high school) but will leave him at cornerback if he’s one of Miami’s top four corners (which doesn’t seem very likely to me)… Golden said he wants to give Corn Elder, recovering from a knee injury, some playing time at receiver this season in addition to cornerback duties… Anthony Chickillo, left off the field on a lot of third downs last season to the surprise of many, said he spoke to coordinator Mark D’Onofrio about that and expects that to change. “I want to be in on third down,” he said.

### In the Canes’ fifth practice of the spring, Kevin Olsen continued to show clear improvement from the fall. His accuracy has improved, and he appears more decisive in the pocket, though he did throw an interception to linebacker Juwon Young today.

"Kevin right now is having a really good spring,” Al Golden said. “He's really mature, doing all the little things you need a quarterback to do and it's showing on the field. He's distributing the ball really well for us, running it. He has to continue to raise his confidence level and continue to lead, but that'll come the more comfortable he is with the offense."

Ryan Williams was up and down Tuesday and at one point missed a wide open Standish Dobard in the end zone on a short throw. But Golden said: “He’s having an excellent spring. Ryan’s accuracy is evident on the field. Not a lot of balls on the ground. His percentage has been high. That’s what he can do. Every guy we have has a different talent; his is his ability to read it conceptually, diagnose it and get the ball out quickly.”

Williams remains the front-runner for the job, but this is far from a slam dunk. This battle likely will extend well into August, and Olsen continues his ascent, it will be a more difficult decision than UM envisioned.

### Though Dallas Crawford has had growing pains adjusting to safety, Golden said he still believes that’s his best chance to get on the field and there's no thought of returning him to running back.

### Golden said tight end Jake O'Donnell "has had a really good spring. He's up to about 254. Clive (Walford's) absence has benefited him. He's getting a lot of work and is really coming through for us. Jake's one of our fastest tight ends."

### When Anthony Chickillo returns from a foot injury, Ufomba Kamalu and Al-Quadin Muhammad will battle for the end spot opposite him. Chickillo is resting the foot as a precaution.

With “(Anthony) Moten in the wing we have a chance to really improve that position in the fall," Golden said. "Right now we have Quan and Tyriq McCord at the other end with Trent (Harris) and those other guys behind them. Demetrius Jackson can play that spot too. That's probably the best depth we've had there from start to finish. It's going to be a lot of competition."

### Chickillo is pleased he decided to return to UM instead of going pro: “I’m happy. It’s a chance to raise my stock.”

Golden said he’s encouraged by the play of the defensive tackles, but we want to see it for ourselves in September. “Jelani Hamilton has to keep coming on,” Golden said. “It’s time for him.”

What stands out about defensive tackle Calvin Heurtelou, an early enrollee? “His strength,” Golden said. “Oh my God. Really strong.”

Chickillo said Heurtelou reminds him of former Cane Micanor Regis.

Golden reiterated he hopes to get a big contribution from summer arrival Michael Wyche at defensive tackle. Earl Moore continues to get first-team tackle reps opposite Olsen Pierre, who’s the best of the group. Olsen and Wyche assuredly will be in the tackle rotation; at least two others must emerge.

### For those looking for encouraging morsels about the defense, there’s this, which shouldn’t be overstated: “They were more physical and tougher than the offense today,” Golden said. “The offense is going to have to regroup."

### Golden said Hunter Knighton, out of the hospital after collapsing and losing consciousness on the practice field several weeks ago, "is being integrated right now. Our biggest concern right now is getting him caught up on school. The next step is getting back to football." Golden declined to speculate on a timetable.

### Cornerback Artie Burns made it clear he hopes to unseat an older player for a starting job: “I feel I can go in and start.”

### Tim Harris said his new role at UM is almost identical to the one he had at UM under Randy Shannon “but I feel more comfortable doing it. I understand the roles.”

He needs to graduate from college to be able to coach, and Harris said he is two semesters away from doing that. “I know I can coach,” he said. “My record speaks for itself.”

2015 Royal Palm Beach’s (Fla.) Charles Perry is accustomed to playing both linebacker and running back at the high school level, but for the NFTC he chose linebacker as his main position.

“I’m doing linebacker and I want to play that in college. At linebacker you last longer, at running back you get hit every game and you get sore. The average running back in the league is probably 3 years so I like linebacker.”

Perry made an early commitment last summer to Hurricanes and has been solid throughout the season. Where does the commitment stand as of now?

“It’s a hundred percent right now, but I have to keep my options open because you never know what can happen.”

Schools are still chasing after the 6’0 200 pound linebacker and the list is impressive.

“Auburn, Tennessee, West Virginia, UCF. et cetera, it’s a lot.”

Despite the other schools trying to lure Perry away from Miami, the Hurricane coaching staff remains in constant contact with him.

“I talked to them almost once a week. It’s a good connection between me and the coaching staff and the players. I feel like family every time I go down there, I just have a good time and the barbecue’s. It’s just good.”

The Royal Palm Beach product mostly speaks with almost the entire coaching staff.

“I talk to Jethro (Franklin) and (Michael) Barrow. Those are the two main coaches I talk to, but I skip around and talk to other coaches. They’re funny, they cool and they’re also about business, so that’s what I like.”

It surprised most to see Perry give such an early pledge to the Hurricanes, but he described it as a chance he couldn’t pass up.

‘Since I was growing up I always loved Miami, so getting an option to go there is a dream come true.”

As of now, Perry has no visits planned for any school, but he does intend to participate in an Al Golden Football camp as well as see the ‘Canes play next season.

“I’m going to the camp and I’m going to a lot of games; All the home games I go to.”

Historically, competition at the QB spot means a really productive offensive season.

Ryan Williams will get it, but Olsen breathing down his neck will make his ceiling rise.

competition at any position is normally a good thing... unless is Kyle Wright competing with Kirby Freeman.

NOW its ok for us to recruit him...

(just in case, sarcasm font)

UMike

Im still reserving judgement.... I still think he is a project and with limited numbers we need elite talent... would love to have to eat crow on this, but that is my current position.

Ohio_Cane

If FSU offers, is he legit then?

UMike

I dont care if FSU offers... if Florida offered and then FSU, its because Miami did. We have a long way to go till signing day, but Im certainly not ready to call him "legit" right now lol

Ohio_Cane

Was a serious question on what has to happen for him to go from project/reach to legit player that deserves a 'ship

UMike

Ohio, for me, I guess I need to see more or hear more about him. When he starts playing games or going to camps and the big boys start offering because they have SEEN him... then I guess to me he would be a legit prospect. If he turns in to a gem, I will be more than happy to give the staff their props like I did with Kaaya and Jenkins etc.

Damn, a kid gets an SEC offer, and UMike doesn't have Him going to the SEC!. Who are you, and what have you done with the REAL UMIKE! LMAO!

UMike

LB

2011: Harris & Morris competition= Jacory Harris's best and arguably comeback player of the year.
2012: Morris & Williams competition= Stephen Morris breakout.
2013: Morris's job. No competition= ...

UMike

LB.... 100% agree. Although I do think losing Fisch hurt Morris.

jsy

U know when we hear how well Olsen is doing or how well ryan is doing, should it be with a grain of salt bc it's against dno who made every qb look like an all American Heisman finalist or bc our qbs are actually good. I'm curious how u guys interpret the news about our offense bc to me it doesn't mean anything going against dno

CaneRock

Now ESPN is hypin' up Bortles Pro Day. PDs are overrated, didn't Tebow wow the scouts during His PD...what happened?

Go Canes

Our staff has done a good job of finding very good prospects before they blew up.

This kid seems to fit that mold.

UMike

As if Go Canes would say anything else lol... The staff did a good job last cycle with Jackson & Kaaya.... I cant think of any other prospects from other classes they were on early before they blew up.

jsy

Rupolf is a guy who comes to mind that this staff had before he really blew up just sucks we couldn't get him.

UMike

jsy.... I gave the staff credit for Rudolph last cycle, BUT, Rudolph had plenty of offers and was a 3-Star kid and early 4-Star. He wasnt a 0-Star (3-Star on 247) with zero D1 offers, so it is a different situation. I did give the staff credit for recognizing him early... then again our staff should know about every South Florida kid early lol

Ohio_Cane

Finding AND landing Kaaya should be enough to not question EVERY move they make.

Go Canes

Congrats to @univmiami alum ~> "@AdamSchefter: Eric Winston was elected as President of the NFL Players Association today."

Really... we find ONE kid and that should be enough to not question the staff? HAHAHA The same staff that brought in Armbrister, Corey King, Jacoby Briscoe, Gray Crow, Earl Moore etc etc not to mention like 10 kids with character issues who left the program...so that staff should not be questioned based off ONE prospect? Alrighty then...

Go Canes

I actually would have said something else, if something else was the truth.

But they have done a good job with unknowns.

It's not just this kid, they also appear to have done a good job with Figueroa and Kamalu last year, since both were virtual nobodies and are taking first team reps as true sophomores.

UMike

And who is questioned EVERY move? I questions TWO moves... but hey... they found Kaaya, so I guess their batting 1.000 in that department.

UMike

Figs I will give you.. although he did "blow up"... Kamalu neither.

UMike

^^^ didnt "blow up"

UMike

And its not exactly hard to get first team reps on our current DL

Ohio_Cane

U question EVERY kid who's not a big time prospect. It's all documented on this site in your posting history. U call every one of them a reach. Hell, I bet if we go back to after Kaaya was offered U had something bad to say about him without looking at his tape because his only offer was SDSU and he was a 2* kid.

No need to be a smartass, as I wasn't being a jerk, just making a simple statement.

UMike

Ohio.. I dont question EVERY kid, I praised D. Jackson, I praised Jenkins and I gave the staff credit... I dont call every kid who isnt a big time prospect a reach.... my point in this whole thing is if you have a small amount of available spots and need to raise the talent level, you go after elite kids. So you can say what you want, but I have praised plenty of kids who aren't big time prospects. I have already this cycle praised Spence and said he will be a 4-Star when its all over... I also praised the staff for Feder in this class.. so dont act like its every kid.

UMike

But for every "unknown" that blew up, there have been a few crash and burn. Some people/fans just think that every player Miami offers is the real deal, or the staff must see something... some fans think every 2-Star we get will be a "gem', and then 2 years later say we have no talent cause that 2-Star didnt pan out lol

UMike

Did anyone else see on Twitter where someone tweeted that G.Paul transferred from Miami to The U? Then its a pic of him at Utah lol

UMike

I also praised Ryan Fines and talked about how we really need to get out foot in the door there at Manatee... they produce some talent

Ohio_Cane

Well, I'm not one of those fans, nor do I claim to be great at evaluating talent. However, I watch tape on every kid before I form an opinion on them compared to who we currently have in addition to the same 4*/5* kids in the same class. If I think they're as good or better than some "big-time" kids out there, I consider them a great find.

I think this kid is every bit as good as DJ Jones, who is the #1 JUCO DT, even though I believe he's being brought in as a 3-4 SDE

NativeCane

Welcome home Coldcane, thank U for your service!

Go Canes

Aside from the ultra-elite programs, pretty much every school has sleeper kids that don't pan out.

It's very, very difficult to get 25-30 4 and 5 star kids every single year.

While we have missed out on some elite kids I wish we had gotten, I think we have done a good job of finding some solid kids that weren't very highly touted.

UMike

Go Canes.. we have... I agree... but just because some have, dont mean all will turn to gems lol

Ohio_Cane

I don't think any fan in their right mind thinks every 3* or worse kid we get will turn into a gem. Haven't met any, personally.

On Ledbetter:

2014 DT Jeremy Ledbetter was at Olympia High School in Orlando, Fla., before moving his senior season to Gainesville High School in Georgia where his career really took off with local media referring to him as a "one man wrecking crew" during the Gainesville playoff run his senior season. He landed at Hutchinson C.C. and red-shirted his freshman season thus giving him three years to play three seasons at the Division I level.

He was supposed to enroll at Ok St in January 2014.

http://m.newsok.com/osu-football-rec...rticle/3929152

OSU football recruiting: Jeremiah Ledbetter's many moves put him square in Cowboys' sights
BY JOHN HELSLEY, Staff Writer, jhelsley@opubco.com

Schools search far and wide for defensive tackles, with the possibilities at the position both limited and coveted.

Jeremiah Ledbetter eased the search for Oklahoma State.

A one-time resident of Orlando, Fla., Ledbetter moved onto Glenn Spencer's radar by moving to Gainesville, Ga., for his senior season of high school. Spencer, OSU's defensive coordinator, is a Georgia native who has made a habit of pulling quality players out of his home state.

From there, Ledbetter moved even closer, spending two seasons at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas – one last checkpoint on his way to Stillwater. Hutch, long an area mined by the Cowboys, is also a junior college known well by OSU defensive tackles coach Joe Bob Clements, a former Kansas State assistant.

So Ledbetter eventually came into clear sight of Spencer and Clements, the two men charged with solidifying the Cowboys' defensive front.

“The facilities are the best and they have good people there and a good school,” Ledbetter told Scout.com when he committed back in June. “I have a good relationship with coach Clements and Coach Spencer.”

In his one season in Gainesville High, Ledbetter shined, playing a major role in a Red Elephants defense that led a deep run into the playoffs.

After redshirting his first season in an effort to add bulk – which he did, going from 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds to 281 pounds – Ledbetter earned first team All-Jayhawk Conference recognition.

Because of the redshirt season, Ledbetter will have three seasons of eligibility at OSU, adding to his appeal at a premium position.

While defensive tackle is always a recruiting priority, OSU's need increases with the departure of senior standout and All-Big 12 performer Calvin Barnett, as well as backups Anthony Rogers and Davidell Collins.

Ledbetter has always been considered a tackle, although he played end at Hutch, finishing second on the team with 73 tackles, which included seven sacks among 13 for losses. He also produced 13 quarterback hurries on a team that finished 8-4

UMike

Ohio.. plenty of fans do.. if Miami offers then he is a "gem", or "legit" (not pointing out you) or "steal" etc... I just want to fill our limited numbers with talent with no excuses... although we still have to win.

Update on LB Jeffery Holland

From rivals:

4-star LB Jeffery Holland from Jacksonville Trinity Christian took an unofficial vista to UM last week, where he met with coaches to talk about the future and things on defense. He was there for about 4 hours

He has taken 12 unofficial vista to different schools. He has 60 plus offers, Michael Barrow is his primary recruiter. He say him and Barrow are really cool and close, they talk every day. They talk on twitter and other media sources.

Holland is not ready to make a top 10, but says Miami will make the top 10. He will make an official decision on NSD. He watch others announce on signing day when he was little and wanted to do the same.

What UM has going for them, He likes the defensive scheme and coach Barrow and AG, says they are cool guys. He liked the spots he can play, they really fit his game - he is a hybrid LB/DE. He know a lot about the Miami program, knows we have won national championships and produced NFL LB like Ray Lewis and coach Barrow.

The best advice he has received was from his coaches and teammates that are on to the next level, they told him go where you want to go, don’t let all the hype get to your head, just stay humble.

Update on DE Scott Patchan

From rivals:

Scott Patchan from Tampa FL Freedom HS

His after played at UM and his older brother was recruited by the Canes. He is familiar with the UM program and list 22 offers including UM.

Of the 22 offers, he says Miami, UNC, Nebraska and FSU are recruiting him the hardest.

"Miami's probably recruiting me the hardest of any of them," Patchan said. "Every day I hear from one or two of their coaches. Every day I hear from coach (Al) Golden himself on Twitter. He tells me everything about the program."

Patchan has a high interest in the UM program.

He says the program is on the rise, UN increases its wins every year. Says Golden is a great coach, Coach D’Onofrio’s scheme is very advanced. Coach Franklin, has sent many defensive lineman to the NFL. His goal is to reach the NFL, so its very attractive to play at UM.

He expects to narrow his list by the summer, says he is not in a rush to decide. He says everyone loves to be recruited, they lie if they say they don’t. He is willing to give an early commitment to help build a powerhouse class that can be very competitive. He wants to be a winner.

He says Miami is in good shape.

The advice from his father and brother. "They both tell me to make the best decision for me," he said. "They're not pushing me in any direction, say whatever choice I make they'll go with it and push me."

Patchan will take a few visits to Um during the spring, especially the Spring Game.
