Led by Tonye Jekiri's first career double-double and four other Canes scoring in double figures, Miami weathered an NC State second half storm and picked up an important ACC road win, 85-70.
Rion Brown scored 20 points to lead Miami. Garrius Adams added 16 points and Manu Lecomte and Erik Swoope had 15 apiece for the Hurricanes (15-14, 6-10 Atlantic Coast Conference).
The Canes shot a season-best 58.7 percent and set a season high for scoring with 85 points, their highest offensive output since March 17, 2013, when they put up 87 points against North Carolina.
Miami erased its only deficit of the second half by reeling off 13 straight points and winning its third in four games.
ACC scoring leader T.J. Warren had 20 points for the Wolfpack (17-12, 7-9). His dunk off a steal by Desmond Lee with about 6 1/2 minutes left put N.C. State up 65-64.
Tonye Jekiri followed with two free throws that gave the Hurricanes the lead for good. Adams banked in a jumper, Jekiri followed Brown's missed 3 with a dunk and Adams converted a key three-point play.
Tonye Jekiri set a career high for rebounds (13) and scored 14 points en route to his first career double-double. It is the ninth time in 2013-14 that Jekiri has registered seven or more rebounds.
The Canes had five players in double figures (Brown 20, Adams 16, Swoope 15, Lecomte 15, Jekiri 14). Manu Lecomte had multiple threes (3) for the eighth time this season and shot 100% from the free-throw line. Lecomte’s 15 points are his most since his career high 19 at Maryland and the eleventh time the freshman has scored in double figures.
Erik Swoope registered a career high 15 points and scored in double-figures for the third consecutive game. Nine of Miami’s twelve players have registered at least five starts. Garrius Adams is the only Cane to start every game (29).
With 85 points Saturday, Miami had its largest offensive output since March 17, 2013 against North Carolina when they tallied 87 in the ACC Championship game. Miami shot a season high 58.7 percent from the floor, their best shooting percentage since shooting 57 percent against Savannah State in December.
TSully's favorite player, Rion Brown, scored in double-figures (20) for the eleventh straight game and 23rd time this season.
Are we there yet?

Virginia has the chance to become this year's Miami in ACC basketball. But I see Duke cutting down the conference tourney nets this time around. Cuse is a middle of the road ACC team at this stage (have not shot even 40% in their last 4-5 games and have survived multiple one possession games they should have lost) and don't pose much threat in my opinion. UNC has shown they can get hot and are putting the pieces together. I just think Duke, at this moment, gives the most consistency and will be the best coached team in the ACC tourney which gives them the edge over UVA.

Canes, 1 on and 0 out.

Cane basketball under Coach L will become the most successful Canes team sport over the next decade.
This current transitional team which, offensively, is mediocre to poor - has overachieved to a ridiculous degree under L's leadership. He has coached around the teams weaknesses and made them competitive in almost every game.
6 ACC road wins? Are you kidding me? I thought they'd get one win in the conference if they were lucky.

Or Rush Limbaugh to Native lol.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | March 02, 2014 at 03:29 PM
Bottom of 7th, Noles now up 13-6. Ugly spurt since Native's last update, clearly not where they need to be yet, but obviously with a lot of easier teams to play in the near future after weekends series vs. FU and FSU. Again, as I'd said two days ago, this doesn't affect the U's conference record at all, as they weren't scheduled to play FSU in conference this season, so it's just a rivalry game. However, it could still play a role in deciding who hosts in the postseason should the Canes play well enough to be considered.
Inning for FSU done. U coming up to bat in the top of the 8th needing a boatload and only 6 outs left to do it.

UM Canes QB Ryan Williams will be a dad in August (Denzel Perryman's baby comes to practice) & lots of assorted notes from Day 2 of spring football
*Though it's obviously early, Dallas Crawford looks really good at safety. He had a great pass breakup during practice, leaping way the heck into the air to get it. Then, a couple plays later, he intercepted a pass by scout-teamer Garrison Lassiter.

Update from Barry's blog:
### UM coach Al Golden said today that Walter Tucker will play both tailback and fullback... Receiver Garrett Kidd is now on scholarship. "Garrett has done everything we've asked," Golden said... Early enrollee Trent Harris, a defensive end with pass rush skills, hasn't been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse to begin practicing with the team.

Congrats on the kid. But horrible timing to manage the responsibilities of fatherhood (especially of an infant and even more so with the first) as well as being the QB of a major college football team. Give the nod to Olsen now.

Walter Tucker has the talent of Adrian Peterson.

The baby is due a month before kickoff. Ryan will have to sleep on the couch and get lots of sleep. I think it will focus him to be better and more mature.

Miami Hurricanes spring practice: family time, bulked-up defense, Duke and Joe’s injuries and a two-deep look
by Matt Porter
CORAL GABLES – Hurricanes linebacker Denzel Perryman had a team-high 108 tackles last year, which ranked him fifth in the ACC. Expect that number to rise this fall.
Perryman, who skipped the NFL draft to return for his senior season, will shift from the weak side to the middle of UM’s 4-3 scheme, a change he says he welcomes.
That’s good for UM, because Perryman’s sideline-to-sideline athleticism and beefed-up frame (listed at 6-foot and 242 pounds) make him an ideal defensive keystone.
“He’s so big now,” UM coach Al Golden said. “It used to be we’d put him at Will when he was 208, 210 pounds to protect him, because that’s where the three-technique [tackle] is. Now he can do it all because he’s 242 now. He’s actually a guy who we’re saying, ‘Enough’s enough, stay at 242.’ [note: Perryman said Monday he’s actually 245. He looks it. Without pads on, Perryman’s core muscles make him look like he’s wearing a flak jacket.]
“I think he’ll become more productive,” Golden said. “He’s in the middle of it. He’ll be able to venture sideline to sideline. He won’t be in the boundary as much in the passing game, he’ll be in the middle of the field. He’ll be the recipient of tipped balls and things of that nature, and he’s got great vision and break. He’ll be more productive.”
Sunday at the second of 15 spring practices, one of Perryman’s driving forces showed up: his newborn daughter, Ella Grace, who turns four months old next week. Ella, who has brown curls and pretty blue eyes, spent some of the practice laughing and playing with her mom and Denzel’s fiancée, Cassie Stuart.
A family affair: Quarterback Ryan Williams and his wife of two years, Deanna, are expecting a baby boy Aug. 5. Deanna said both are very excited to be first-time parents. Williams’ mom, Jayne, joked she was disappointed her son told offensive coordinator James Coley before he told mom.
Unofficially, it was Canes family day at Greentree. Among those taking in practice: pros Vince Wilfork and Jonathan Vilma, former UM assistant Don Soldinger (the latter two spotted by the Miami Herald), former Cane A.J. Highsmith and the families of several current players.
