NFL Hall of Famer and University of Miami football great Michael Irvin will host the 4th Annual Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys/University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame (UMSHoF) Celebrity Dolphin Fishing Tournament June 27-28 in Islamorada, Fla.
Event activities will take place at Founders Park at Mile Marker 87 and Coconut Cove Resort and Marina at Mile Marker 85 on the Overseas Highway. All Hurricanes fans are welcome and invited to participate and attend or observe the events.
The tournament weekend will begin Friday evening with a kick-off party and captains’ meeting followed on Saturday by a full day of fishing, awards dinner and live and silent auctions featuring unique sports memorabilia as well as a variety of gift packages.
This is the only fishing event of its kind that matches participants with former Miami Hurricanes sports stars for the competition. Cash prizes and trophies will be presented to anglers in eight categories. A portion of the tournament proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys, The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis and the UMSHoF.
“This tournament reflects the Hall of Fame’s mission,” said K.C. Jones, president of the UMSHoF, a 2008 hall inductee, two-time Super Bowl winner with the Denver Broncos and founder of the tournament.
“Not only can University of Miami sports fans celebrate the accomplishments of our former student-athletes, they can compete side-by-side with them while raising money for local causes. We are on track for 100 boats to participate in this year’s tournament.”
Irvin added: “This is really all about the U and our family of Hurricanes fans and former student-athletes. We must embrace the mission of the UMSHoF, which is an organization that recognizes the tremendous efforts of our Hurricanes athletes, coaches and administrators.”
Former Hurricanes sports stars scheduled to participate include NFL Hall of Famer and 2012 Tournament Host Warren Sapp (Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders), NFL Hall of Famer Ted Hendricks (Baltimore Colts, Green Bay Packers, Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders), Clinton Portis (Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins), Brett Romberg (Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams, Atlanta Falcons), Gary Dunn (Pittsburgh Steelers), Damione Lewis (St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, Houston Texans), and Randal Hill (Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints).

While on the subject of other sports, I must say I never watch the NBA in the regular season. However, I have watched a lot of the playoffs to give it a second chance. While the fundamentals on a lot of players are lacking, the shot selection is questionable at times, there is not that much D and teams do not work to build leads, the games have been very exciting. I have really enjoyed watching them just as a game, as a fan. I do not do fan real well, because of playing and coaching football. Guess I got that disease. I watch football but I analyze it often. Bball is not my game, so I have said just watch. I have really enjoyed the games as they have been close, as are the series. On top of it all, the Comish stood tall in the Clipper fiasco. I like the stance he took. Lebron has spoken very professionally about it. Thanks NBA its fun again and toleration of racism was beat down. Great job so far!!!!

Shortest off-season of all the major sports, so in a way, you're right, it never really ends, just takes a break to draft and then goes right back at it a few days later.

SOUP, who you got in the Derby? I see Todd Pletcher has 4 entries with Danza and Intense Holiday at 8-1.
California Chrome comes in as the favorite at 5-2 but Cali horses dont fare well in the Derby, maybe today will change history.
Cant count Baffert out but he comes in at 20-1 with Chitu and mt boy Calvin Bo-Rail is seated on Ride on Curlin at 15-1.
We got a Canes connection with General A Rod at 15-1 who won, placed, or showed in all 5 of his races in Florida and is one hell of a good looking horse.
Wicked Strong won the Wood Memorial and looks good at 6-1.
Im going with Intense Holiday with a late surge and win with Wicked Strong to place second and Danza third!
What say U?
Dem Canes!!!

I can't remember the year but I had just got a $500 bonus check from work and I wanted to put $300 on a horse named War Emblem because I thought the name was cool. So I went home and tried to place a bet online, but I could only get dialup out where I was living, could never get the site to load right and didn't place the bet.

Raize, if Maidana hits Floyd with 1 of his legendary body shots, Floyd is gonna spill his guts, literally! Lol
Posted by: 4-Real | May 03, 2014 at 07:04 PM
Raize,
absolutely spot on. I rarely watch reg season NBA, and some playoffs, but these are fantastic. I am glad to see it. I wish there was a little more D, and some shot selection is iffy, but hey I am sitting back and watching as a fan!! Enjoy them big guy!!!!
I love the steps Comish took, he did the the right thing for sure. All these far right people saying you cannot get him out etc. Rules are rules, and he needs to be out with his way of looking at things. Good riddance!!!

Cali Chrome the class of the field in the 140th Kentucky Derby:
Steven Coburn and Perry Martin's favored California Chrome, ridden by Victor Espinoza, took command at the head of the stretch en route to a 1 3/4-length victory over Commanding Curve to win the 140th running of the $2,202,800 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I).
A sun-splashed crowd of 164,906, the second-largest attendance in Kentucky Derby history, watched California Chrome give jockey Victor Espinoza a second Derby victory to go with his triumph on War Emblem in 2002.
Art Sherman, 77, conditions California Chrome and became the oldest trainer to win a Kentucky Derby winner. Charlie Whittingham was 76 when Sunday Silence won the 1989 Kentucky Derby.
California Chrome paid $7, $5.60 and $4.20. Commanding Curve, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, paid $31.80 and $15.40 with Danza, ridden by Joe Bravo, finishing 1 ¼ lengths behind Commanding Curve in third and returning $6 to show.
It was another 2 ¾ lengths back to Wicked Strong, who was followed in order by Samraat, Dance With Fate, Ride On Curlin, Medal Count, Chitu, We Miss Artie, General a Rod, Intense Holiday, Candy Boy, Uncle Sigh, Tapiture, Harry's Holiday, Vinceremos, Wildcat Red and Vicar's in Trouble.
THE MRS. AND I PICKED 5 OF THE TOP 6 FINISHERS!

Barry:
### In the wake of Ryan Williams' injury, the idea of returning to football has crossed the mind of former quarterback David Thompson, who left the UM football team to concentrate on baseball, according to Thompson's father, Ed.
But Ed Thompson said that’s unrealistic because of David’s recovery from venous thoracic syndrome, which left him with a blood clot and necessitated the removal of a rib.
The good news: UM coach Jim Morris said Thompson, who hit .328 in 19 games, might return for postseason baseball.
"We tried to get the hospital to give him the rib as a memento but they wouldn't," Ed Thompson said. Classy move by athletic director Blake James to visit Thompson in the hospital last month.

Canes baseball loses game 2 to Alabama St, 6-5, on Saturday night to even the series at 1-1. Game 3 is going on right now, top of the 8th, Canes up 6-3, Alabama State now with 2 outs and runner on 3rd.
Posted by: jcane | May 04, 2014 at 03:39 PM
To the bottom of the 8th, Canes coming up, still up 6-3.
Posted by: jcane | May 04, 2014 at 03:41 PM
Canes win, 6-3, taking the series, 2-1, over out of conference foe, Alabama State. The U still still has a 2 game advantage in-conference over FSU, although in different divisions and with a series loss to FSU (that didn't count as an in-conference series). How this all would stack up to post-season regional decisions is beyond me and still too soon to say. Just keep winning, and preferably no losses to ACC teams along the way.

We spent a beautiful day at Lake Parker Park in Lakeland Fla.
We gathered both familys from all over Florida to celibrate our granddaughter's second birthday. Good food lots of introductions and great cupcakes to top it all off. 160 mile R/T Debary and back.
Had several comments about my UM decal on my rear window ( it is gator country)

Way to go FSU!
Jameis Winston’s suspension from the Florida State baseball team is over.
Just four days after Winston's suspension from the team was announced, following his failure to pay for prepared food that he took from a grocery store Tuesday, FSU coach Mike Martin confirmed that his closer is back on the team.
“Winston is reinstated," said Martin, following the Seminoles' 7-1 victory over Minnesota Sunday. "He finished his community service and as soon as he did he came over here, and we reinstated him.”
