The No. 12 University of Miami women’s tennis team swept No. 18 Oklahoma 4-0 in the NCAA Second Round to advance to its ninth consecutive Sweet 16 on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables.
“I think that good things happen to good people,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “These seven girls are really hard workers, super mature, have bought into the system and deserve what they earned today.”
Miami (21-5) didn’t get off to a strong start in doubles, but used a comeback win from Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner and gutted out a win at two doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. After taking the doubles point in thrilling fashion, the Hurricanes capitalized on the momentum and quickly and soundly put away the Sooners in singles.
For the second day in a row, No. 90 Liliekite was the first to put Miami on the board, with her 6-0, 6-1 win against Chumney. Lileikite rolled to a 6-0 first set win and after dropping the first game of the second set, the junior won six more in a row to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
Albuquerque was next to complete her match, where she defeated Emma Devine in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 for her 18th consecutive win.
With a 3-0 lead on the scoreboard, Riobueno defeated Oklahoma’s Brhane 6-0, 6-3, clinching Miami’s ninth-straight trip to the Sweet 16.
Miami now advances to the national tournament in Athens, Ga., where each of the 16 regional winners will compete for the national championship May 15-20. The Hurricanes are slated to play UCLA or Ole Miss at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Singles competition:
1. #29 Stephanie Wagner (UM) vs. #68 Whitney Ritchie (OU) 7-6, 1-2, unfinished

Hers Bleacher Reports take on the draft Re: UM prospects. I do not get their e mail, but read articles. A lot of their articles as wanna be players and coaches, as you can sign up to write for them. They tend to be biased one way or another. This article is pretty close to home as it points out real numbers. It does place some blame on Onionhead, but the continuation of poor development policy can be place evenly on the threshold of AGs reign.

"Bills: OT Seantrel Henderson (seventh round)
I don’t care if he was a seventh-round pick. And I don’t care that if you drew a picture of a franchise left tackle, this 6-7, 331-pound athlete with sweet feet would be it. Henderson has been nothing but trouble since being one of the top high school recruits in the country. Multiple failed drug tests during college at Miami and then, again, reportedly during the scouting combine. Henderson couldn’t even finish his pro day workout. And on the field, he’s not even good. Henderson didn’t come close to earning the privilege of hearing his name called during the draft. He should have been undrafted. That’s what he earned."
http://mmqb.si.com/2014/05/11/2014-draft-10-picks-who-stand-out/?eref=sihp
LOL. Suck it Gred Bedard, now go stuff another doughnut down your gullet and be sure to remember to choke.
Henderson was one of the better UM players in the last 10 years and will be one of the best value picks next to Storm Johnson in this draft class. Thanks for sticking out the atrocious attempts at using hash-tags on a site other than Twitter to make you the butt of unfunny running gags, joke of an AD carousel, and loser one-size-wins-nothing-to-brag-about game plan installed each week these last three years to remain in the hunt for the roster spot as a pro Seantrel. Chalk up another, but far less prestigious, championship for Kehoe to hang under his hat this summer as well when it's time for coach's meetings.

I think the caption under RS pic in Bleacher Report is unfair. While RS did struggle, its not like Coker was a master recruiter who had the cupboards overflowing with fundamentally sound, skill laden athletes. He did not. RS had some players but nowhere near what it would take to be the old U. Likewise, things fell apart for RS and he did not have cupboards full either. To top it off, AG has brought some good players here, but nowhere near close to what it takes to be prominent.
Its been a long, dark road from The Desert and the Fiesta Fiasco. It was not so dark at first, but then it was pitch black for awhile. Maybe its getting lighter, but we have a long ways to go. Keep pushing onward. standing still is not progress. Go Canes!!

FSU & VA win also?
Posted by: Lurker | May 11, 2014 at 04:35 PM
I've posted this before, but in terms of overall star ratings the 2013 squad was the worst since 1997. This was for two reasons:
1) The 2011 class withering away during the collapse of the 2010 season. Golden had only Chikillo left, lost Bridgewater, and ended up with only two four star players.
2) Too many projects in the 2010 class. 21 three star players is far too many and represented failure in recruiting. On top of this, no less than a third of this class failed to qualify or had transferred out after just one season.
Posted by: TonyCane | May 11, 2014 at 05:26 PM
VA Cane, Coker was a better overall recruiter than Shannon. The Canes had 40 four and five star players on the 2007 roster that Shannon inherited. The squad Golden inherited was less. Where Coker failed primarily was in recruiting quarterbacks and wide receivers. Having to use a punter (Brian Monroe) and a cornerback at wide receiver just so that you could have six on the roster is a disaster. I would expect that from a bottom feeder, not an elite school. The depletion of talent ruined Miami's offense. That's why we averaged barely 20 Pts a game in 2006 and 2007. And landing only two quarterbacks between 2003 and 2006...not good. Both scenarios led to over recruiting afterwards which created lasting roster imbalances.
Posted by: TonyCane | May 11, 2014 at 05:34 PM
Im very surprised that Allen Hurns didn't get drafted but I'm not familiar with the jags wide receivers thought he had a good season and much better than anybody drafted 3rd round and after.
Also Christian Jones from fsu.. harp all you want but man. .
Posted by: laquinton | May 11, 2014 at 05:44 PM
Good points TC. I think the reason for that was that Coker liked people, and he was a likeable man. I felt he did a good job when he was OC. I think recruiting got to be hard and took an effort they were unwilling to make. They did not approach it aggressively. Everything you do in this game has to be aggressive; it is not a passive game.
Randy had a bad reputation with too many coaches in the area. He was not likeable and he liked nobody. One of my guys who played in Miami, a TE from Richmond told me Randy despised a lot of white and black people. I don't know as I was not there, but he told me to my face and he never lied while playing for me. Bottom line, Shannon was not liked by too many people and he returned the favor. Hell, from all I have heard I would not want to play or coach with him. He has too many personalities in that Onionhead. Nice bunch of guys, never knew which guy you were gonna get.
They both hurt the program, but that cannot be used as another excuse for AG either. He has done ok, and seems to be getting better. That long falloff hurt bad; kids don't live on dusty trophies, 30 for 30 programs that teach ancient history and folklore, or old dusty clippings. I know I coach them. You got to be in front of them, in the news, at the hash tag so to speak. Future is Now and we are not in the picture for a lot of the really good ones. Hope that changes. This year will say a lot.
I am not putting anyone down, but you either win or lose. You cannot take forever to get there, as its a different time in college sports. People want to win; they may not understand it takes some time, but they want to win and be near the top every year. That is not easy.
Tony you always have great info about the recruiting game, and I always read your post word for word. Thanks for all you do buddy!

Thanks VA. Great points as always. Hopefully this year and next are when things finally come together for the Golden led Canes. By the 2015 season the roster should be fully restored with proper depth and experience.

Godwin's law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1][2] is an Internet adage asserting that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1" [2][3]— that is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism.
Promulgated by American attorney and author Mike Godwin in 1990,[2] Godwin's Law originally referred, specifically, to Usenet newsgroup discussions.[4] It is now applied to any threaded online discussion, such as Internet forums, chat rooms and blog comment threads, as well as to speeches, articles and other rhetoric.[5][6]
In 2012, "Godwin's Law" became an entry in the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.[7]
Posted by: 86Cane | May 11, 2014 at 08:29 PM
There are many corollaries to Godwin's law, some considered more canonical (by being adopted by Godwin himself)[3] than others.[1] For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.[8] This principle is itself frequently referred to as Godwin's law. It is considered poor form to raise such a comparison arbitrarily with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely recognized corollary that any such ulterior-motive invocation of Godwin's law will be unsuccessful.[9]
Godwin's law applies especially to inappropriate, inordinate, or hyperbolic comparisons of other situations (or one's opponent) with Nazis – often referred to as "playing the Hitler card". The law and its corollaries would not apply to discussions covering known mainstays of Nazi Germany such as genocide, eugenics, or racial superiority, nor, more debatably, to a discussion of other totalitarian regimes or ideologies, if that was the explicit topic of conversation, since a Nazi comparison in those circumstances may be appropriate, in effect committing the fallacist's fallacy. Whether it applies to humorous use or references to oneself is open to interpretation, since this would not be a fallacious attack against a debate opponent.
While falling afoul of Godwin's law tends to cause the individual making the comparison to lose his argument or credibility, Godwin's law itself can be abused as a distraction, diversion or even as censorship, fallaciously miscasting an opponent's argument as hyperbole when the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate.[10] Similar criticisms of the "law" (or "at least the distorted version which purports to prohibit all comparisons to German crimes") have been made by Glenn Greenwald.[11]

What the HELL is that about???
Posted by: 86Cane | May 11, 2014 at 08:30 PM
I guess some people need that stuff in their lives. Anything referring to Hitler and his twisted mind I skip. I was a history major, studied Germany and Soviet Union extensively, but they are no longer any use to me; hatred and aggression only work on the football field and there it is a a focused, controlled strategy.
VA Canes Law or VA Law of Defensive Analogies
Promulgated by American appraiser and storied football coach VA Cane has to do with the idea that the longer a football blog goes on that the chances of the legendary 46 Bear Defense, Apocalypse Now Football, Tatumizers and general ideas of aggressive, hard hitting, jam and jack man on man coverage, blitzing strategy and overall knock people out with hard low clean and fast hits will be discussed. In addition, the concept of The VA 4 Part Life Strategy of Coaching:Life Family School Football will also come into play when discussing the coaching, guiding, teaching, and mentoring young athletes in our society.
Hey I think the VA Law is much more positive and better suited to our blog anyway huh?!!!!!
Thanks Soup!!!

Posted by: CaneRock | May 11, 2014 at 09:35 PM
True, but the overall talent level on paper was higher for the team that Shannon took over than it was for Golden. Speculation on coaches fates collapsed two Miami recruiting in five years. That's why it is CRITICAL that Al has a good season. Barring early departures Miami has only one four star player that leaves after 2014. The 2015 class will provide a significant boost if Golden closes strong, and if the class does not change as the 2011 a and 2007 classes did.
Posted by: TonyCane | May 11, 2014 at 09:44 PM
UNC's one run win over FSU today has UM two games up on FSU in conference play, although in different division. The narrow one game lead over UVa makes things tight going down the home stretch. Obviously, a good showing in the ACC tnmt. would make the rest moot. However, there's not a lot of wiggle room when hoping to be in the top 8 for automatic superregional hosting. The U clearly needs to finish ahead of UVa at this point, given an otherwise lesser ranking and series loss to them. Also, it's unclear how the FSU series loss plays out thus far, as it was considered a non conference series but clearly was part of their schedule. However, a strong second half of the season is tough to ignore, and beating these same teams or having a stronger showing in the ACC tnmt. would make them a lock.
Anyone remember good old Louis Nix? To the Texans he went, I think in the 3rd round.

Posted by: TonyCane | May 11, 2014 at 09:44 PM
True. And like I said the other day...not only must Golden have a good season, but THIS team, must demonstrate that "The Process" yields better results...ala 1999, BUT with MORE wins. And these recruits ain't dumb, they know Golden flirted with PSU. So Golden must show that He wants to be here...none of this "It's like going home", or "I'm not a candidate" non-sense.
PS: Shannon may have took over a better team on paper, but it damn sure didn't show up on grass.

Ariz...
2015 Royal Palm Beach LB Charles Perry has been committed to Miami since last summer. The 6-2, 205-pound prospect says he is solid with the Canes for now, but he is not closing the doors on other opportunities.
“I feel confident with them, but like I say you never know what will happen because I still have a whole year left in high school,” Perry said.
Perry plays both sides of the ball in high school, but Miami has been recruiting him to play on the defensive side of the ball. At RPB, he plays both inside and outside linebacker “depending on the offense”.
“I’m expecting to play linebacker but I’m good with anything on defense. I can play safety too because I have the speed.”
He has felt a different pressure in competitive environments ever since he committed to Miami.
“You gotta show up because people want to try to pick on you and go at you.”
Miami is not the only school in contact with him. Perry says that a couple of SEC powers recently pulled the trigger.
"I just got a couple offers from Alabama and Auburn. Illinois and FSU came through the other day too."
Micheal Barrow is Perry’s primary recruiter for the Canes.
“I get a good vibe form him and we get along great. He’s a real cool dude. If I can do what he did in the league, then I would be blessed.”
One of the top factors for Perry will be making sure he can have an early impact wherever he goes.
“I gotta look at the depth chart because I’m trying to go in and play. I don’t want to look at the depth chart and see that they have eight linebackers in front of me or something crazy like that."
How would he describe his style of play on the field?"
“I’m physical and I’m able to digest plays. I’m pretty much a ball hawk.”

Miami Hurricanes fans remember the name Kayvon Webster all too well. A standout defensive back in the 2009 class from Pace, Webster was committed to Miami in the before flipping to USF on signing day morning. Kayvon was drafted by the Denver Broncos in last year’s NFL Draft and went on to have a solid rookie year.
Miami fans should become reacquainted with the Webster name, as Kayvon’s younger brother Antoine is one of the top safeties in South Florida for the 2016 class. Webster spent last year winning a state title with Champagnat Catholic, but informed me that he will be at either Carol City or American starting this week. Webster also added that American will most likely be his landing spot.
“I’m an all-around player who just likes to help the team out. I’m mostly an in-the-box hard-hitting safety,” Webster said.
Miami fans have heard recruits use the next quote on countless occasions.
“When I first got into football, UM was my favorite because Sean Taylor was my favorite safety ever. Right now, UM and Georgia are the two I like.”
Kayvon is a valuable asset to Antoine on the recruiting trail. The older brother is already mentoring Antoine in the process.
“He tells me to take recruiting very slowly. He says if he had another chance at it that he would take more things in.”
Does USF have a built-in advantage because his brother played there?
“I’m going to be open with everything.”
Although Webster does not have any offers at the moment, he is hoping to use the first one as a springboard to future success.
“It’s going to give me motivation to do it because it’s my way out. It will make me just go harder than I do everyday.”
With Miami, the fact that he could play in front of his family is something that he says he will consider.
“If I get the offer, it would be great for me because I would really think about staying home.”
How did a Miami native become a fan of UGA? Webster explained.
“I was a big fan of their safety from last year (Bacarri Rambo) and Todd Gurley at running back. I played running back before safety so that’s why I liked him.”

Tito...
2016 Dillard (Fla.) defensive tackle Aaron Thompson isn’t a very large name in the South Florida high school spotlight at the moment, but he plans on changing that with this upcoming season.
“Yeah of course, I’m just trying to get out there and I’m gonna try my best this year to prove my name.”
Thompson is working with his team currently with spring football and feels the improvement and leaps the team is making.
“Spring is going great and we just played South Dade in a scrimmage game and we did very good.”
The 6’4 239 pound linemen has already racked up three offers from FIU, FAU and Pittsburgh, However, he is still receiving interest from a number of other schools.
“I’m talking to the University of Miami, Auburn, University of Florida and a whole bunch of other schools.”
The Hurricanes stand out the most to the powerful defensive tackle as he has had a passion for them ever since he was a young child.
“I’ve always the university of Miami since I was a little kid. Ray Lewis and Ed reed we’re players I liked growing up.”
While the ‘Canes have yet to offer, it wouldn’t be a difficult decision for Thompson if he ever gets one.
“It would mean a lot because it’s my dream school; I would love to go there. If Miami were to offer me I would commit right there.”
The Gators are another school that is showing interest in the Dillard product.
“I went to their camp last year and got to see the school and talk to some of their coaches.”
Thompson is looking to add interest from other schools including Florida State, Alabama and N.C State.
During the summer, the Thompson plans to attend camps at the University of Miami as well as Florida State.
