Atlantic Coast Conference Regular Season Champion Miami is the top seed for the 2014 ACC Baseball Championship, which gets underway Tuesday at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.
Miami (40-15, 24-6) clinched the No. 1 overall seed Saturday with a 2-0 victory against North Carolina, and will head up Pool A. The Hurricanes will be joined by fourth-seeded Duke (32-23, 16-14) and fifth-seeded Clemson (34-22, 15-14), while No. 8 Wake Forest (30-25, 15-15) and No. 9 Georgia Tech (32-24, 14-16) will play on Tuesday to join the pool.
Florida State earned the No. 2 seed and will lead Pool B with third-seeded Virginia (43-11, 22-8) and sixth-seeded Maryland (34-19, 15-14). The fourth spot in the pool will go to the winner of Tuesday’s game between seventh-seeded North Carolina (32-23, 15-15) and NC State (32-22, 13-17).
The tournament will get underway Tuesday with the two play-in games. The Tar Heels and Wolfpack will play at 11 a.m., followed by the Demon Deacons and Yellow Jackets at 3 p.m.
Under the pool-play format, each team will play one game against each of the other three opponents in its pool Wednesday through Saturday (May 21-24). The two teams with the best records within their respective pools will advance to the title game on Sunday, May 25, with the winner earning the ACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Barry:
### If the Dolphins wanted to try to add an All-Pro and sell tickets, they could sign Saints restricted free agent and former UM star Jimmy Graham to an offer sheet. Miami would need to give up two first-round picks if the Saints didn’t match, but imagine a Graham/Charles Clay combo. But Dennis Hickey hasn’t inquired about it.
### Athletic director Blake James said UM intends to play FIU in football sometime after 2015 and that UF athletic director Jeremy Foley was receptive when James recently asked him about renewing the UF series. The Gators will agree only to a neutral site. “I would have to think about Orlando,” James said. “That’s not real neutral but it’s an easy distance to our campus.”
### For those hoping the UM/FSU talent gap closes, it won’t this season. ESPN analyst Todd McShay’s first mock draft includes five FSU players in the first 17 picks and six in the first round but no Hurricanes. The six FSU players: quarterback Jameis Winston, defensive end Mario Edwards, cornerback PJ Williams, receiver Rashad Greene, offensive tackle Cameron Erving and guard Tre' Jackson.
### Eyes rolled at FSU last week when Jameis Winston’s father, Antonor, asserted –in the wake of Winston stealing crab legs from Publix – that FSU “is supposed to have somebody around [Jameis] 24/7. He’s a Heisman Trophy winner so he’s definitely not supposed to be by himself.” FSU, dumbfounded by the suggestion, isn’t inclined to oblige.

I am very happy to say Jim Morris made me eat crow this season. Go Canes!
Posted by: Canesteeler | May 18, 2014 at 07:50 AM
Stephen Morris was in Todd McShay's top 5 QB prospects last year up through the UF game. How'd that work out? McShay is a bum.

But trust me, U are not alone! There are some other on here who need to "man up" and take responsibility for their comments too.

We still don't put enough runs on the board. Bats still need work. I will reserve judgement until next year. Team should be much better than this year (record might not be -- ridiculous streak this year can't reasonably be expected to be replicated). But their postseason run should extend beyond where it does this year.

If 2014 is a repeat from 2013 it's gonna be straight up anarchy in tha SPACE

The talent gap between Miami and FSU ballooned to a wide delta in the last two years due to outstanding recruiting on Fischer's part and setbacks on Miami's side. 2015 should be the year when the gap begins to narrow. Barring a catastrophe the Canes will be at around 30 four star players in 2015(up 10 from 2013). Meanwhile FSU, which has around 40 four and five star players, could lose up to twenty of those atheletes to graduation or early departure. The talent disparity should normalize in 2015-2016.

Heck we need to at least win 9 games this season again because we haven't won 9 games or more in back to back seasons since 2004 and 2005. Quite the drought peeps. Like I said including a bowl game and ACC Title game so I say we win 10 or more total games but I wont have a coronary if we win 9 games and go 9-4. Win less than 9 games and I won't be a happy or at least cool with 8-5 and if 7-6 is the record like 2010. I will be royally pissed and the pitch forks should be out in full effect.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | May 18, 2014 at 11:13 AM
I've said it before, the closest analogy to the 2014 season will be the 1999 Hurricanes. They were more talented than the 98 squad but had a lesser record due to a number of factors, inckuding quarterback play. This years squad will have better depth and more talent. QB play will obviously be the deciding factor.
Posted by: tonycane | May 18, 2014 at 11:15 AM
Tonycane I agree with your overall analogy but hell SM17 was no world beater last year no big loss. I don't see us having a less record and if we do it would be an epic fail.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | May 18, 2014 at 11:23 AM
In fact the 1998 and 1999 both teams won 9 games 9-3 in 98 and 9-4 in 99 because the played the kickoff classic and beat Ohio State. I would use the 2004 and 2005 analogy saying I could see a 9-4 season again one reference because we were on the 12 game schedule and in the ACC playing 8 conference games. But U bring great stuff to the game Tony much appreciated.

QB play will obviously be the deciding factor.

Posted by: 86Cane | May 18, 2014 at 11:38 AM
We'll have a to keep a close eye on Soup this year. If that QB does play, something tells me fans of Gray Crow will go gray.

Trainer Art Sherman says California Chrome might not pursue a Triple Crown bid if race officials don't allow CC to wear a nasal strip which he has been wearing in his previous 6 races. Last year I'll Have Another won the Derby and Preakness wearing a strip but Belmont told them he must
Race without one. I'll Have Another ended up scratching the day prior to the race due to a leg injury.
We will see what happens here. If the trainers/owners are serious or bluffing about holding CC out. Or if race officials will hold strong given their previous decisions regarding racing with nasal strips.
Posted by: BEERicane | May 18, 2014 at 11:55 AM
BEER...I was not aware of that. It would be tragic if he does not run for a shot at the Triple crown. Would he run without it? My guess is that he would if push comes to shove. Can't pass up a shot at The Crown? There has not been a TC winner since 1978!
Posted by: 86Cane | May 18, 2014 at 12:01 PM
I think he'd run without the strip. Naturally the trainer needs to put a little pressure on race officials. The interesting thing could be if he were to lose without it, do they blame it on not having that strip and the race officials?
Posted by: BEERicane | May 18, 2014 at 12:19 PM
Espn just reported it. But you heard it here first!

In other news, AT&T poised to acquire DirecTV…..for 50 Billion
Posted by: raizecane | May 18, 2014 at 12:59 PM
That 9-3 record is a little deceiving I think. It was not a strong 9-3 against a stiff schedule.
Savannah State was 1-11, USF was 2-10, UVA was 2-10,FL was 4-8, Wake was 4-8, FAU was 6-6. Though they are football teams, it is hard to deem them as worthy opponents. 6 wins 5 teams had losing records, 1 at .500.
We went 2-3 to close the year out, got beat in the bowl. Outscored in the last 5 and bowl 224-163.
I hope 2014 will be much better, and I would like to see some quality wins.
Posted by: VA Cane | May 18, 2014 at 01:09 PM
Belmont would allow him to run -- but as of this moment, if he is to race it has to be without the strip. Let's say they don't allow it (I think this is the likely outcome) are the people more pissed at Race Officials or CC's squad? I'd be more annoyed with his crew.

VA with all due respect U are what your record say U are I will never apologize for wins. I guess Florida would say their 4-8 was deceiving. I see U are conveniently leaving out that we were 7-0 and ranked in the top 10 for 3 straight weeks. Not trying to argue but U think these other teams apologizing for their victories. People love bigging up some of these other school have people examined their schedules and said their record was not worthy. Come on Now. Let's not o there.

Let's go Heat!
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | May 18, 2014 at 03:40 PM
FL 4-8 was not deceiving they were a bad football team. The other teams we beat with those records were bad football teams. I am not saying anything about other teams or what they do. I am not digging up anything about anybody. I said the 9-3 was deceiving. Simple statement and it was deceiving. I hope to have a better 2014. Very simple direct statements and wishes. I will try not to make such statements and wishes anymore as that is all I have for the 2014 season, a better year with quality wins.
Posted by: VA Cane | May 18, 2014 at 03:50 PM
Florida was a talented football team, but that doesn't mean they were any good.
Indy is hitting the 3 well right now. Still too many timeouts in basketball.

Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | May 18, 2014 at 04:24 PM
VA Cane, I agree our 9-3 record was deceiving, and we were lucky to win against unc, wake, and ga tech!
Posted by: WWIN | May 18, 2014 at 04:25 PM
DWade has been one of my favorite players since he came up. He's amazing when he's aggressive and is attacking the rim. Far too often though he thinks he's a jump shooter.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | May 18, 2014 at 04:27 PM
Heat are actually playing worse with LBJ on the floor. Never thought I'd say that.
Posted by: BEERicane | May 18, 2014 at 04:30 PM
WWIM,
I do believe with a more dynamic O (it hurt losing Duke as he is dynamic) a better prepared and more aggressive D, we would have been able to beat VT and Duke. That would be 5 good quality wins and an 11-1 season with the loss to the NC. That would feel stronger and more successful overall. If things do not fall into place and we do not get everyone on the same page, 2014 could be tough. I'm trying to keep it simple. Hope all is well with you Willie!!
