NEW BLOG IS UP!

Anything but those orange seats!

Sass

Dark Green Seats..... That would be nice. I seen some earlier pics of the dark green

Lurker

Also PLEASE no more blue seats.

How about a color scheme of orange and aqua, but an aqua that's closer to green than blue. NO MORE BLUE!

Dude on a Pale Horse

Oh I see there is a picture.

Lurker

That concept image is drastically different than the current stadium.

Not really.

They're basically taking a rectangle with a cutout, made of some lightweight material, and placing it on top of the stadiums.

Aesthetically, it may not be the most pleasing, but it makes perfect sense from an engineering and construction viewpoint.

As you can see, they're distributing the load using the "spikes" and the ground to do much of the work in spreading out the forces to hold the roof up, so it's not a dead weight sitting on top of the stadium. Makes a ton of sense, from an engineering standpoint, and is probably the costliest part of the build.

The rest of the upgrades: lowering the field, adding seats closer to the field, adding bigger indoor LCD screens, redecorating the inside, is all child's play, compared to that massive roof.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Will the canopy cover the field? Because fans in SoFL have an interesting problem, it needs to be cool enough for fans but still hot as hell for the visiting team.

30CINCO

Wonder the time frame they're working with to complete these changes with the stadium? I'd guess at least a year.

"A Dolphins spokesperson said Friday that construction would take approximately three years, and it wouldn't disrupt the schedule at the stadium."

So if they start at the end of the Dolphins upcoming season, 2018 for completion. Hopeful the canopy is the first task they complete.

Terrance Sullivan

Ohio Cane it will be done in 2 stages but total time of completion is 3 years.

This was always the best option, at least for the foreseeable future.

Hope it shuts up the clueless pot stirring at the Herald.

Guys ive been thinking about the all the stadium talk. Yeah I would really like a stadium that holds 55-60k but 40 no thanks. I think the renovations at SLS are going to be good for everyone. Closer and new seats that are not orange, Canopy for shade and rain (which I think will make the stadium sound louder). New replay screens. I think it will be awesome. Talking about the canopy maybe the day crowds will be bigger knowing they are not going to be baking. Just some thoughts.

Go Canes

Wow great news!!!

SOUP...what pisses me off more, is these statements by these greedy money hungry suck-ups...AKA...politicians:

"I think we have to roll out the red carpet for these guys," he said of Beckham and his investors. "They were twice led in the wrong direction, and I think that's an ideal site."

Also promoting the petition, according to a news release, are Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez (the county commissioner's son), former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, and Coral Gables Commissioner Vince Lago. Francis Suarez and the rest of the city commission took a symbolic vote in Beckham's support earlier Thursday.

"This is a great solution that in theory should please many different constituencies," the four politicians said in their joint statement. "Beckham deserves the best our community has to offer, and we firmly believe this site would set his team up for success in our community long in to the future, while bringing the passion for Canes football back to where it belongs."

^^^^^^^^^^^ Crap like this just makes me sick to my stomach. Where was all this hospitality when UM asked for upgrades to the OB...hmmmmmm. Sickening.

Toughest stretch: Oct. 23-Nov. 15 (at Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Florida State)

Why: Miami plays one of the most difficult schedules in the ACC, featuring 10 teams that made bowl games a season ago. But this three-game stretch is the most challenging, for a host of reasons. It will most likely determine whether the Hurricanes can get to their first ACC championship game. If you remember back to our ACC Road Trip series, Miami vs. Virginia Tech and Miami vs. Florida State were our selections for best games on their respective weekends.

You can see why this stretch is particularly critical. Given the cluttered Coastal, Miami cannot afford many slipups. In the early odds, Miami is favored to beat only North Carolina among these three games, and the Canes are a one-point favorite at that. An upset or two here would be huge for the still-growing Hurricanes.

Don;t think there's much doubt at this point Williams will be back early this season. Every indication is his rehab is going very well, something that was a big question mark when the injury occurred.

To me it's just great to see real competition again. As it's been documented multiple times lately, that hasn't been the case for a long, long time here.

In my opinion, if necessary this season they will sacrifice experience for what they feel is a long term answer at QB.

UMike

I found an old Athlons magazine with Chris Rix and Kyle Wright on the cover haha.. we have had our share of let downs at the QB spot in the last decade lol

Keoki

Having a game experienced QB start over a RS Fr / true Fr is not the worst thing that can happen. If we think Kaaya is who we hope he is, red shirting is a benefit to him and the team. We shall see.

The SEC Network will have two key benefits to member schools: recruiting and revenue.

“It’s going to significantly increase our exposure, not just within the footprint of the SEC, but nationally,” LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said in a Q&A with the official team site. “What’s the ultimate goal? To recruit athletes. That’s the ultimate goal around the country. I think this will help us recruit athletes to keep the SEC and LSU strong.”

As for the revenue, Alleva hopes to build an athletic dorm, a nutrition center and more in the never-ending arms race. He says increased TV revenue can help avoid big raises in ticket prices.

“What’s the price of losing? You can’t afford to lose,” he said. “Every day, you have to keep getting better. I had an old coach that used to say, every day, you either get better or you get worse. Nothing stays the same. Our goal is to keep trying to get better every day.”

UMike

30... will you be at the FSU game?

UMike

I think ideally Olsen wins the job and Kaaya red-shirts. Crow is nothing more than a body at that position and I think Heaps will only be a small step up from that. If Williams can come back healthy it could make things interesting.

UMike

Olsen had a red shirt year and a full year of the playbook. He is a high touted QB. Kaaya has had the playbook for a while now and is another highly touted QB..one of those guys, freshmen or not, should be able to beat out a guy who couldnt hack it at BYU or Kansas and who throw 10 pics to only 8 td's last year as an experiences JR lol...I wonder if Golden would even play Kaaya if he is the best QB come fall. Should all be interesting to watch. At least whoever it is will have weapons... Coley has to earn that money this year

CR we have to reach out to these soldiers. I also feel we need to promote much more emphasis on mental health for everyone. We all have come to living under more stress due to economic social aspects of life. We all need a chance to get our feeling out to express ourselves rather than internalize stuff.

Nice to see our guys win in soccer great job.

I think competition never hurts a team it strengthens it if the coach can keep the focus as always on what and who gives us the best chance to win. Winning is the goal. I love winning, but I love my guys doing the work to win even more. They do the work, and I always defer to them as they power the wave. I just coax a little bit. I hope it gets heated and makes all the QBs better; I like Kaaya but I want the best guy on the field as we must win!!!!

86Cane

UMike...I go back to the thought that if Crow, Olsen, Heaps or Williams can start this year and we can red-shirt Rosier and Kaaya then that would be the goal. If we go 9-3 and play for the ACC title vs FSU then we are good.

We are not winning the ACC over FSU this year. Prognosticator Phil Steele has FSU beating Bama making it back to back titles for the Noles. He has Ohio State and OK as runner ups in the playoffs that start this season.

I have said all along that 2015 is the year we should have at least a shot at the ACC crown and a spot in the playoffs for a title. That is when either Olsen, Kaaya or Rosier will have to be ready to lead us back to National prominence.

30CINCO

The one who would be in trouble is Olsen. If Olsen is not able to beat him out, having the extra year of knowing the playbook, that says a lot about where Olsen is. Having a game experienced QB start over a RS Fr / true Fr is not the worst thing that can happen. If we think Kaaya is who we hope he is, red shirting is a benefit to him and the team. We shall see.

30.. I can agree with all that.. but still believe if Heaps is able to come in and win the starting job we are in trouble.

30CINCO

Heaps = Williams, with better arm strength. Obviously Williams has the advantage of knowing the playbook. Creating competition for the QB group is a plus. In the end, which ever QB wins, he will be asked to hand it off to Duke a lot, hit the short route, occasionally go deep, make smart decisions.

May the best man win.

Up until now, David Beckham has been courting politicians -- to no luck -- for a Major League Soccer stadium site. Now, some of the elected officials appear to be courting him.

A group of current and former Miami-Dade County and city of Miami leaders have thrown their support behind a petition asking to build the stadium -- with the University of Miami's college football team -- in Little Havana.

"Support Beckham soccer stadium at former Orange Bowl site, and bring UM football back home!" reads the petition's title. (Notably, the petition mentions the beloved Orange Bowl, not the less-popular Marlins Park.)

It was endorsed Thursday by a cadre of politicians who have had reservations about the two previous locations proposed by Miami Beckham United: the county-owned southwest corner of PortMiami and the city-owned Museum Park and deepwater boat slip.

One of them, County Commissioner Xavier Suarez, said no one wants to see Beckham change his mind about opening his expansion franchise here -- and many people would like to see the Miami Hurricanes playing closer to their Coral Gables campus. Suarez first endorsed the Marlins location last week.

Talks between Beckham's group and UM broke down recently over the boat slip site, which was deemed too small to accommodate football. While MLS wants a 20,000-25,000-seat stadium, UM is interested in a larger capacity of 40,000.

Beckham's longtime business partner, American Idol creator Simon Fuller, has dismissed the mostly city-owned parcels next to the Miami Marlins' ballpark as "spiritually tainted" by the public financing deal for the baseball team.

But Xavier Suarez said he doesn't think that's the case -- and that if it is, the government's role should be to turn a perceived liability into an asset.

"The idea that it's tainted is all backwards," he said. "It's a fantastic site for a multi-stadium facility that allows us to compete for international events."

DJ... I dont wanna rash the kid neither.. he is a Cane now.. and I guess everyone is right there isnt much of a downside. Just think it was a stretch to bring in a kid who isnt as talented as who we already have. Like you said, would like to be proven wrong. Getting Jake "Trash" Heaps (sorry, until proven otherwise, "trash" and "heap" just go together so perfectly) is a very sensible personnel move given that Miami has zero proven QBs on its roster -- NEGATIVE ONE proven QBs, actually (Gray Crow, I'm looking at you).

There's no real downside, so I'm not going to bash anyone in the program for making the move. But there's also not a lot of reason for me to think the upside is much, either. We're talking about a guy who came out as a five-star, couldn't survive the competition at BYU and now has succumbed to the competition at mighty Kansas.

Obv, I'll be happy to be proven wrong. But it looks like Miami is still hoping that one of its not-so-great QBs will catch fire this year, and is just trying to improve the odds by adding another not-so-great QB.

Tito...

It’s a rare feeling to win a state championship in any sport during high school, but to win a state championship in two different sports within the same year is exceptional. 2016 American Heritage (Fla.) prospect Brandon Johnson was able to accomplish that this past year.

“It means a lot knowing that me and another player have ever done that in my schools history. It means a lot to be able to set that record and it’s a blessing really. It was hard to describe and I was very excited.”

Johnson has been hitting up a number of camps this summer to get his name out and also improve his game.

“The camps that I’ve been to are the FSU camp for a weekend and I just got back from the South Carolina camp. I plan on going to the Notre Dame camp and the LSU camp in the future as well. I’m actually going to the Miami camp this weekend.”

Johnson already holds offers from schools such as South Carolina, Miami, Louisville, Duke, FAU and Cincinnati. While the young prospect is still early in the recruiting process, it hasn’t stopped him from naming a leader and top schools.

“My top three would be Miami, South Carolina and Louisville in that order.”

The 6’1 180 pound receiver cites his admiration for the Hurricanes since he was younger as why they are currently in the lead.

“I mean I’ve always been a fan and my family ties and I’ve always just admired UM. When they offered me I was in shock and I was in crazy.”

The Gamecocks are behind the Hurricanes and he cites the facilities and atmosphere as the reason for them standing out.

“I just went up there and I really like the facilities and the coaching staff. I also just like it up there a lot.”

Finally, the Louisville Cardinals are in third in the race for Johnson and his connection with wide receivers coach Lamar Thomas has played a big part.

“I’ve talk to Lamar Thomas, he has a lot of confidence in me and I enjoy talking to him. It seems like it’s cool up there as well.”

Johnson is aiming to make a commitment following his junior year and will be looking for a few things in schools.

“First I want to see a great academic program, I want to see how the facilities look and I need to see the coaching staff.”

Gwynn's rookie season, in which he played in 54 games, is the only year of his career that he didn't hit .300. He hit .289. His 19 consecutive .300 seasons are second to only Ty Cobb, who had 23.

Gwynn's career .338 batting average is of a different era. As Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan notes, every other hitter with an average of .338 or above started his career before 1940.

From 1995, the year he turned 35, to 2001, the final year of his career, Gwynn hit .350, with 937 hits. He never stopped being productive at the plate.

For his career batting average to slip below .300, Gwynn would have needed to add 1,183 hitless at-bats to his total — roughly the equivalent of two full seasons.

Of the 12 top batting seasons since the expansion era began in 1961, Gwynn owns four of them. Those are: .368 in 1995, .370 in 1987, .372 in 1997 and .394 in the strike-shortened 1994 season.

In 1994, Jeff Bagwell hit .368, the 13th best season since 1961, but didn't even win the NL batting title because Gwynn was nearly 30 points better.

Gwynn had nine five-hit games in his career. Only Pete Rose had more, with 10. Gwynn also had 45 games with at least four hits. That puts him 10th on the all-time list.

In 2,440 career games, Gwynn had only 34 multi-strikeout games. So, the odds were better that Gwynn would get four hits than striking out twice. Let that sink in.

Gwynn's 434 career strikeouts are an amazing mark for a player who had 10,232 career plate appearances. Paul Waner is the only member of the 3,000 hit club to do better. He struck out 376 times in 10,766 plate appearances from 1926-1945. For comparison's sake: Adam Dunn has struck out 486 times since the start of 2012. Mark Reynolds struck out exactly 434 times in 2009 and 2010.

In 1995, Gwynn struck out only 15 times in 535 at-bats. That's insane. As Aceball Stats points out, 27 current MLB players have already struck out than more than 15 times in June.

Eleven times in his career Gwynn managed to not strikeout for 20 consecutive games. The longest streak, 34 games, came in 1995.

Only once in his career did Gwynn have a three-stikeout game. Eerily, it came against Bob Welch on April 14, 1986. Welch died last week at age 57. That was quite a game. Welch pitched 9 2/3 innings, striking out 12, but the Padres won 4-3. Gwynn had a hit earlier in the game, then reached on an error in the 10th inning and scored to tie the game at 3. The next inning, the Padres won on a walk-off homer.

More on Gwynn's lack of strikeouts: He faced some great pitchers, but even the cream of the crop had trouble getting him out. Neither Pedro Martinez nor Greg Maddux ever struck him out. Maddux faced Gwynn 107 times and Gwynn hit .415 off Maddux.

Gwynn had 323 career at-bats against Maddux, Martinez, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz and struck out only three times. Glavine got him twice. Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe notes that Curt Schilling managed to strike out Gwynn twice in 43 at-bats.

Gwynn never hit for .400 in one season, though he came close to matching Ted Williams. In that strike-shortened 1994 season, Gwynn finished at .394 through 110 games. He was hitting .423 in the second half of the season, so it was very much a possibility.

Gwynn did top .400 for a 179-game span between July 3, 1993 and May 9, 1995. He hit .403 in 697 at-bats.

In two-strike counts, Gwynn hit .302. That's a statistic that's only been measured since 1988, and since then, Gwynn's mark is easily the best. Wade Boggs, next on the list, hit .260 in two-strike counts.

From 1984-1999, there was only one season that Tony Gwynn wasn't named an All-Star. That was 1988. But he won the NL batting title that year, hitting .313, so he got the last laugh.

Sorry for the long post, I had to share. This guy was the best hitter I've ever seen and an even better guy. RIP Tony Gwynn, G.O.A.T. to us San Diegans.

I don't think its stockpiling. The past 5+ years we have been handicapped at QB b/c of lack of depth and competition and maybe talent. I am not into the star rating, but I do consider them potential ratings.

2008 - Marve (Freshman) (4*) and Jacory (Freshman) (4*) battle it out. Marve ends up being a bust. Jacory not much better, not RS’d.

2009 - Jacory starts and with Marve leaving there is NO competition. No one pushes Jacory. We have no other option. Worst of all, we bring in NO QB!

2010 - SAME STORY! We do bring in S. Morris (3*). The only back-up to J. Harris is a backup Safety. Again, no competition.

2011 - SOS!!!! We bring in NO QB. On scholli we have J. Harris (Sr.) and S. Morris a true Soph.

2012 - WTH, QB'S? yes we bring in 3. One is a baseball player, another trnasfers and Crow (out of respect for the CEO I'll stop). We also bring in a transfer from Memphis. All of who are rated low, not an excuse, stating facts. So S. Morris comp is a spoh transfer.

2013 - FINALLY a potential starting QB (I said potential). Morris is a SR, no comp, but Williams gets PT due to injury.

2014 - Bring in 1 highly touted QB (4*), and other project QB (3*), and Transfer (former highly touted) (5*), have Williams (all be it he is hurt) (3*), and maybe the QB of the future Olson (4*)

So with our history I do not think we are stockpiling, but having more 3 potential starters is called building a roster with depth. If you strikeout on all three it’s time to run the wishbone!!!!!

Whipple was the back-up 2 JH in 2010. But after JH got K'edTFO! against UVA, Whipple stunk up the place so bad, that RS had no choice but to burn SM17's RS. But SM17 almost brought us back in that game.

Happy Anniversary to Canespace! A fun place to talk, argue, and share in the victories. May there be many, many victories to come.

Perfect day in World Cup soccer! U.S. with an exciting win over Ghana. Congratulations from Germany, you guys should be proud of your team.

And of couse: Thanks Soup, for all you have done in the past seven years!

Joe

that's why shannons roster management was horrendous and it cost us years....especially the QB slot. It takes a long time to build depth back....years.

Canespace,

This Date in Hurricanes History...June 16th, 2001 brought to you by the UM Sports Hall of Fame:

Don't Know Who Joe is but Joe is Correct… We are stockpiling at positions which to me shows that we don't care about who we have at some point they have to train up what they have and stop being so quick to replace everyone as if its a FireSale….I am happy kids are coming to the U again but again I say stock piling isn't always good..

Pretty much all the killers, other than snakes and humans are disease vectors. They don't kill you themselves, they transmit disease.

Another takeaway is that the overwhelming number of deaths are in third world countries, where access to medical care and treatment is extremely poor or virtually nonexistent.

We are very lucky to be living in clean, safe, air conditioned comfort, with life expectancies approaching 90 and probably close to 100 in a couple of decades.

Makes me laugh at the victimization, disaster, macro-biotic, all organic, head cases who don't realize that based on the only outcome that counts, life expectancy, we are getting relatively healthier, as a population, every year.

If it wasn't for obesity, smoking, drinking and accidental deaths, our life expectancy would be at or over 100 already.

O_C,

I thought so too. It turns out they spread a disease in fresh water lakes and streams.

CR,

He's in that Roger Federer, David Robinson category for me. The super classy, role model, HOF player category. Tony was an institution in San Diego, along with our family friend Junior Seau. They are both on the Mt. Rushmore of SD Sports. I remember Tony talking to us out in RF between innings and bringing us back balls from the dugout. The closest I ever came to catching a HR was at old Jack Murphy stadium. Tony put a really good swing on it and I'm watching it thinking... Holy sh*t, this one is coming right at me. So I put my glove out thinking I don't even need to move. Then the ball catches just a touch of the upper deck and falls 5 rows in front of me. I missed it all because I wanted to sit in the shade on a beautiful San Diego day, lol.

Still living with Shannons roster management legacy at the QB position.

Williams getting hurt was unfortunate. Now we are sitting with two highly rated Freshmen QB's...ideally Heap is a stopgap while Olsen sees some playing time under fire and Kaaya is redshirted getting distance between Olsen and Kaaya.

This is a no brainer transfer.

Bashing a 5-star transfer? Say it aint so Joe. Say it a'int so!!

Wait, I forgot. Golden is clueless.

Let's all sign the petition that Golden can not make a single offer or roster move without the signed written consent of the Office of Major League UMike.
