UMike...While I agree with your UM / FSU comparison in recruiting U cannot compare the recent last three year scenarios at both schools. Plus FSU has different admission and graduation standards and the girls, oh yeah, lots and lots of "talent"!

UMike

FSU also has someone that can coach the defense lol

@NashSports: 2016 Oakleaf (Fla.) OLB Shaquille Quarterman says he has committed to Miami. #Canes @CanesInSight

We were over by what, 16 yards a game? Defense may have struggled but we probably added 20+ Yds per game to our average in yards given up during garbage time in the Pitt, Virginia, G Tech and Gator games alone. Not even counting third and even fourth string yds given up on some of our routs.

Posted by: Go Canes | June 24, 2014 at 08:27 AM

Let me see if I've got this right: Steele's formula is suspect because it rules out a team that ALMOST had the yardage he was looking for, but gave up a bunch of meaningless yards (in addition to the many, many yards that were meaningful).

Steele's formula says that Miami is not equipped to win a championship, in part because it has a bad defense. Is his formula WRONG about that? Hell, naw.

Maybe his yardage threshold seems arbitrary because Miami is thisclose to being there -- but if anything, that means his yardage threshold is too lenient. Miami's defense is only championship caliber on a team coached by Art Briles, or maybe Mike Leach.

When U go to the UM vs FSU game this year have U decided who U will be rooting for or what colors U are gona wear?

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | June 24, 2014 at 10:09 AM

Really? Anyone NOT named D'No can coach D!! lol... FSU lead the country in points allowed with 12.1.. Besides the 34 they gave up to BC they didnt give up more than 17 until they played Auburn in the title game. Of course they lost Jeremy Pruitt, but you think Fischer will let his D just fall off? They just promote from in house (Charles Kelly) and it will keep on rolling.

Miami will not win a title as long as D'No is coaching the D imo

FSU also has someone that can coach the defense lol

Dont even go there bro!!! Just saying part of the reason they were able to get back on top is because they have been able to secure more elite talent than Miami.. isnt that obvious to everyone?

F&$K the Noles!! lol

UMike

Forgot no one is allowed to question the worst DC in Miami history haha

UMike

I will not bash D'No (for a while).. everyone knows how I feel about him....Glad we picked up a couple of elite 2016 players... great start to that class. But we have to win some games to be able to hold onto these kids... hopefully we can.

Posted by: UMike | June 24, 2014 at 10:24 AM

Now give us the reason WHY that was true for the last three years?

UMike

86... because they out-recruited us.. duh!! lol

CaneRock

SOUP...time of possession can be a skewed stat. IIRC, we were either last, or next to last, in 2001 & 2002...

86Cane

Now UMike I KNOW that U are a LOT smarter than that so I am gonna give U one more crack at it:

What were the REASONS why FSU was able to "out recruit" UM over the last three years?

Take your time, think it through and provide a well thought out, logical, comprehensive answer.

UMike

86... you know I'm not good at "well thought out, logical, comprehensive answers"... I know you want me to say "the cloud", but I wont. Not gonna do it! lol

86Cane

ROCK...I agree about TOP being a misleading stat but IF we want the D to improve doesn't it help to keep them OFF the field more? If UM had the lead in more games and ran clock that D sure would look a whole lot better. Instead we play from behind or even, cannot play agressive and then go three and out like 5 times in a row. That ain't gonna get 'er done!

86Cane

#TheCloud is only ONE reason.

I'll give you the rest later since U lazy and I gotta do WORK. LOL

Kiss of Death but I hope his commitment sticks

VA Cane

Ohio, if I am guarding that guy knowing how good he is, I would have been in his grill. He had too much time and space to get that perfect kick off. You got to run with him the whole game; we let him have a little room and he burned us. Great players make great plays at great times. It was a great play for them; when you do not go til the whistle it costs you. That last sequence we made errors all around and it cost us...as a TEAM not individually.

Allison sounds great have not seen any highlights at all. you must remember he has 2 years in HS. Hell just because he committed means he likes the program now. He sounded high on TN and old St. nick will not give up either. I hope he comes here and has success; now hes just a blip on the radar.

Shaq Q. is awesome. He will be great player....somewhere. He is quick powerful strong, keeps his head up and moving, eyes focused....he plays so low its awesome. Again, he is great now....how many schools will back off just because he committed to the U? None. I would not. While I hope he plays here, I question as he matures will he not see we do not play defense? If I was a kid now, I would watch UM D lowlights and have to say is this what I want? How many U linebackers are really being developed for the NFL now? Not like it used to be. There are great D schools out there and they will compete for him. Impressive player for sure? Under lock and key for us? Not now; we will see how the D is the next 2 years. I teach and talk with so many players, and I know what they think; they want to go where they can win, play on tv and be champions. Despite all the fluff, attention, talk etc...one thing still matters....Winning big time. Hope and pray we find that path.

Tito's Tidbits

-The commitment of 2016 QB Jack Allison can’t be understated. Allison is a huge national prospect with loads of potential. He stands around 6’3 and has a tremendous arm, he’s accurate and can put a great zip on the ball. It’s obvious that Miami is going to have to fend off schools to keep him, but from speaking with him yesterday he seems pretty set on Miami.

-His commitment marks the 3rd commitment Miami has received from a Tampa product this year including Dwayne Lawson and Scott Patchan. Miami is making it’s presence known in that area and a lot of the success comes from Tight Ends coach Larry Scott being so familiar with the area.

-2016 LB Shaq Quarterman finally received his offer this past weekend and committed this morning. Quarterman is a talented linebacker who can hit hard and runs from sideline to sideline making tackles. Much like Darrion Owens, I expect Quarterman to be pretty solid throughout the process, but don’t be surprised to see him take a couple visits.

-From a scouting perspective, Quarterman is closer to 5’11 then he is 6’1. His strength is the best part of his game, he delivers crushing hits and always brings down the ball carrier. He personally reminds me a lot of Tennessee LB AJ Johnson except for the size. Johnson is 6’2, but plays sideline to sideline and always brings the hits.

-2015 DL Jason Strowbridge was a participant of both days at the camp this past weekend which was intriguing in multiple ways. Strowbridge was considered by many, including me, a UF lock due to his close friendship with Florida running back Brandon Powell. However, it seems as if Miami is in the game and making it closer than many expect. Strowbridge was reported on campus both days of the camp and seemed to be enjoying himself. This will be a recruitment that might go until signing day.

-Two Booker T stars also participated in the last Al Golden camp this past sunday. Both 2015 WR Antonio Calloway and 2016 WR Shaquille Green were working at receiver during the camp. Calloway still has a top 2 of Miami and UF, but it still seems like Gators have a slight lead over Hurricanes at the moment. However, with Miami having guys like Chad Thomas, Demetrius Jackson and a very pro-Miami staff at Booker T, the Hurricanes are sure to make this a battle. Green is another talented receiver who is sure to show many this year his skills. He’s athletic and has very solid hands.

-2015 Palm Beach Garden LB Tevon Coney was also at the Al Golden football camp this past weekend and got a chance to see the campus once again. This visit came after Coney returned from Notre Dame where he was throughly impressed by what they had to offer. I mentioned it before, but Coney is still a heavy UF lean with Notre Dame now in second. If Miami wants to truly impress Coney, it will most likely involve making a serious improvement on the defense. Coney will be looking at how well the defense plays this year and it will be instrumental in his decision.

-Miami seems to be in the lead for 2016 Southridge WR Freddie Pinder. Pinder is a great talent with very good hands and fluid running ability. He isn’t slow and shows great body control on jump balls. Pinder is currently doing virtual school which means one of 2 things: He is planning on graduating early or is lacking in credits. It’s not a terrible concern, but it’s something to monitor.

-2016 DL Aaron Thompson participated in the Miami camp this past weekend and had a standout performance by all accounts. He didn’t receive an offer, however he did tell me the staff likes him a lot. Thompson already holds offers from schools like Clemson, Pittsburgh and UCF. He’s considered a top defensive linemen for the class of 2016. In my last article I did with him, he said if Miami were to offer he would commit. Personally, I can’t find a reason why Miami wouldn’t offer already, but we will see how they handle it.

Rock U coming to any games this year man.

Terrance...I usually end up going to at least 1 a year, but not this season. Between my boys football, basketball, & wrestling, I'm not gonna have any time.

Terrance Sullivan

Completely understandable Rock

Go Canes

Dj that's was my point. Using that arbitrary number that I easily disputed as did you by mentioning coaches like Briles and Leach make it even more ridiculous to use as some type of "cutoff point."

And on a side note, Duke is the man:

@MiamiHurricanes: "Whoever the quarterback is won't have all the pressure. I will accept that role." - Duke Johnson

"Lurker" number 2, you on the other hand, I will personally attack. Sorry if mommy was mean to you and you were bullied in grade school because of your overt femininity, it still doesn't excuse such cowardly and low class comments.

You're a bltch made punk hiding behind a keyboard.

I dont even wanna ever hear "we're back" or "The U is back" etc until we AT LEAST win the dam coastal!! lol.. and I mean win it outright, not because another school is on probation or something lol

Lol UMike, you know damn well we won that coastal outright a couple years ago, tell him Go Canes! Lol

WWIN

^^^^^^^^
And UMike, the U will be back when I move back to Nashville!

VA Cane

One reason FSU has out recruited us is easy to see.... Winning. Granted, we have heard the last 10 years each year UM FSU are back, relevant, make college football better when they are great, etc. However we know that not to be true. Both teams struggled.

FSU does have easy admissions and low academic standards. UM does not. They have borderline mentally challenged "Student Athletes" playing for them and it does not matter; they can play football. Liberal ideas that everybody has a right to a college education prevail, even if at FSU they sign the paperwork with the proverbial X. This helps you to get people in, even if it is for sports not education. I mean you have a QB who got around a rape charge and shoplifting charge; the press acts likes hes a national hero ready to skip the NFL and go to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Good player not so intelligent.

They get people in, and they have won. 45-10 the last 4 years, 82% wins, 1 NC. Compare that to 29-21 the last 4 years or 58% wins, some terrible bowl losses, a black cloud investigation that was stressed by FSU and Jimbo, a Defense that could not stop Grandpa who is 90 and has a wooden leg, and whose performance the last 6 games was repulsive.

Kids want to go where they can win titles, be on tv, do things that you and I cannot do, get out of trouble and get to the NFL.That is Winning. FSU has accomplished that, no matter how twisted, distorted, and under handed they have done it.

VA Cane

Back means winning the division, the conference, the playoff and the national title outright. That is the standard for being back, winning national titles that do matter, not just an ACC division. I want to win the big deal, not just the small matters. The division and conference are nice, but they are accolades collected along the way to winning it all; being the only one standing where it matters; the NC!!!!!!

VA Cane

Thats their tell that they sell to these kids; come here, be a star, win a titles....they just don't elaborate all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on, and the press, administration, staff, and alumni are not going against that system.....to win legally would be too hard.

VA Cane

Miami Hurricanes

Of the Hurricanes’ 11 FBS opponents in 2014, only one—Virginia (2-10)—did not break .500 last season. That’s 91 percent of the FBS games coming against winning teams. Miami’s other 10 FBS foes hooked up for a 91-41 (69%) record last season.

This does not make it easier; but if you win, it makes a huge difference.

SHEESH!, who were these cats coming after:

3 in custody after Liberty City shooting that killed 2, injured at least 8

Witnesses say 2 men opened fire at housing complex

Witnesses told Local 10 two men appeared across the street from the complex and opened fire.

More than 50 shell casings were found at the scene.

Shortly before noon Tuesday, Sky 10 was above the scene as a Miami police officer removed two guns from a Sponge Bob Square Pants backpack on the roof of a house not far from the shooting scene.

I like playing good teams as we will see how we stack up, get some more exposure, get a chance to redeem ourselves and show we can compete.

Having a good season is critical to our future, our recruiting, and AlPa and Cos future at the U.

UMike

Lurker.. I had a feeling it may have been a troll.. thats why I gave a little sarcastic remark and not any sort of reply lol

CR... someone messed up in a big way to have that kinda beef come at you

VA Cane

We just had a shootout on Hull Street, 3 guys shooting at each other, Fathers Day we had a neighbor kill his wife, 2 children age 6 and 2 then himself, and a good friends daughter left her 3 year old in the car, and the child stepped on the window button and thew window strangled her. She is charged with felony child neglect and felony manslaughter.....sad. Nancy Grace ripped her on national tv, even though she has no clue as to what went on. A tragic mistake, but Grace is a ratings whore with a big mouth and negative attitude for the everyday people of society. god must have loved everyday average people; he made a lot of them...I am certainly one of them and am fine with that.
