Based on my extensive statistical research of the 2013 college football season, I have developed the following "Canespace Rules" (READ: identified criteria for winning) for the Miami Hurricanes during the 2014 season:
Canespace Rule #1: Offensive Points/Game Must Increase. On offense UM must go from 33.8 ppg in 2013 to 37 ppg in 2014, a difference of +3.2 ppg. In 2013 all of the top 20 offenses averaged 37 points or more per game led by Baylor. Regardless of who starts at QB in 2014, Miami has the offensive weapons and firepower to score and score often.
What the Hurricanes need is one more successful scoring drive per game that leads to at least a field goal and they will achieve this goal. Coach Coley must find a way for his offense to comply with the the Canespace 37 point rule.
Canespace Rule #2: Defensive Points/Game Must Decrease. On defense UM must go from allowing 26.8 ppg to 24 ppg, a difference of -2.8 ppg. Historically is has been shown that teams have been able to win a National Championship by holding the opposition to an average of under 27 ppg over the course of a season and UM did that in 2013 (26.8).
Eventually the UM defense has to at least partly resemble the Hurricane defenses of old if they are to win and win big. Increasing sacks and turnovers while also preventing explosive plays of 20 yards or more are the key ingredients in making the defensive turnaround at The U. Coach D'Onofrio must find a way for his defense to comply with the Canespace 24 point rule and we highly recommend that he do it now.
Canespace Rule #3: Offensive Third Down Conversion Rates Must increase. According to several of our bloggers on Canespace this may be among the most important rules of all. Many like to complain about the swiss-cheese like defense UM defense but few point their finger at the repeated three-and-outs that the offense racked up time and time again in 2013 that left their defensive brethren tired, beaten and exposed.
On offense UM must go from a .352 conversion rate up to a .420 rate. By keeping the offense on the field it protects the defense and keeps them rested, prepared and ready to rumble which leads us to...
Canespace Rule #4: Defensive Third Down Conversion Rates Must Decrease. On defense UM must go from a .419 conversion rate allowed down to a 3.50 rate. This is another critical area according to many of our bloggers. The Hurricane defense must find ways to stop allowing so many third down conversions and be able get off of the field in 2014.
The UM defense must find a way to re-instill fear into opposing offenses that find themselves in third and long situations. That is because if I see a DB lined up 10 yards off of the ball and back-pedalling on a third and seven or they give up one more first down on third and 17, then I cannot be held responsible for my actions. Or those of OGV either. No, seriously.
Canespace Rule #5: Defensive Turnovers and T/O Margin Must Increase. This rule is also known as the Canespace "20/30 Rule". That means that UM cannot have more than 20 turnovers on offense (22 in 2013) and must have at least 30 takeaways on defense (27 in 2013) to be successful in 2014.
The Hurricanes were a +5 in turnover margin in 2013 but that is simply not good enough to compete with the top teams in the Nation. Many of the best teams were at least +10 or higher and that is the company the Miami needs to keep if they are to re-ascend to their once lofty perch of competing for National titles and not in a second tier bowl game at some dank stadium in Orlando.
Canespace Rule #6: Penalties and Penalty Yards Must Decrease: This rule is also known as the Canespace "5/500 Rule". That means UM must limit their penalties to 5 or fewer per game (from 5.46) and have under 500 yards (from 582) in penalties this season.
If Nick Saban can do it at Alabama then Al Golden can do it at Miami. Yes indeed, we strongly suggest that the he and his Hurricanes do it, and do it now. Either that or you will be penalized by more than just the referees.
If UM can find a way to comply with these 6 simple rules and make the minor improvements in each of the categories I have identified then I predict that the Hurricanes will win at least 10 games, play for an ACC title and maybe even more in 2014. And please remember: Failure is NOT an option.
Go Canes.. FSU is only recruiting from a position of power NOW, not a few cycles ago. We whiffed on Bryant, Valentine, Watson, Bostwick, Hooks, Bain, Holley, Sawyers, Clark, Johnson, Pelon, Stucky etc.
I agree is a hard position to find quality talent, but we were right there and couldnt finish.. even had a few committed.
My only point in all of this is we need to get better at this spot. Our D is horrible and has been, this needs to be a priority, not 4 elite RB's lol (which is awesome)...I hope it starts soon.. but it wont this cycle imo

If its true Lebron isnt meeting with any more teams, I cant see him going to Cleveland. No way he goes without meeting with Gilbert, imo.

Wyche is a good player. He is from VA Beach. He is going to be a big help and will do a good job. Seen him in action; he will be an upgrade. sometimes thats what happens; make the best of it and we move on.
Posted by: VA Cane | July 10, 2014 at 11:12 AM
Wyche will definitely be an upgrade.. I agree. I think CH will too.
Posted by: UMike | July 10, 2014 at 11:14 AM
position of power NOW
But grades were a factor with one or maybe both.
Thats the problem in a nutshell. These schools have no real education standards. They allow stupid dumbass MFs who cannot read and write to come to school for 1 thing:Sports. Athletic ability does not entitle one to education if you cannot do the work. Some of FSUs kids may not be able to spell or read, yet by being there they take precedent over a real student because they can play sports. Sad system that permits this type of thing. There has to be some kind of reasonable standards for all schools....and it is not sympathy and entitlement.

I think what Gray is going through now, will be the same thing Walton has to go through if He wants to reclassify. Assuming you need 28 credits to graduate, by my calculations, Walton would be 2 credits short at the end of the next school year. And He says He hasn't taken the ACT yet...and we don't even know where He stands with His core classes...4 years of English & Math, 3 years EACH of Social & Natural Sciences, & 2 years of a foreign language. But again, if Walton is able to reclassify, I see Him coming next Fall...AT BEST.

And whether Chris Sheridan is right or wrong on "Lebron to Cleveland"...He's a DOUCHE!
Posted by: CaneRock | July 10, 2014 at 11:31 AM
FSU's record the last three years is 35-6.
They've had continuity at the top, with Jimbo running the show as Bobby was on his way out. They have top of the line facilities, tradition and a coach that can really recruit.
It was just a matter of out with the old and in with the new before that school blew up again.
They have definitely been recruiting from a position of power the last three to four years.
Regardless, I feel we are miles ahead of where we were at that position, thanks to some good JUCO pickups and a potentially dominant kid from St Thomas.
It's gone from an F to a C on our roster. We need to get it to a B or A in time. Think we will.

Wyche being an upgrade will be a plus. After the past two years, I don't think he has to be a star, just be someone we can count on to do a job. I think even the 12%'ers will acknowledge this isn't going to be easy for the Defense to be better than average, I just hope we aren't giving up more than 40 in any game.

Too little, too late:
"I would say that because I have family members on the UM team," Snelson said. "So they probably think I'm going there."
Those family members are Tracy Howard (cousin on his father's side), Malcolm Lewis (cousin on his mother's side), Joseph Yearby (his uncle on his father's side) and Jermaine Grace (a cousin on his mother's side).

We have to improve, not be #1. That wont happen. If we get a little tougher on the run up the middle, get a little better on the corners and safety, and can get some pressure and push, this will help get off the field especially in 3rd down situations, and will allow for more pep and vigor late as we will not be so winded. Just improve in all areas of D. That is all you can expect; we will not suddenly be The Steel Curtain, Doomsday, 46 or any of the great UM Ds from the past. Just improve over last year.

The Work 7-10
**Miami is in very good position to land Tallahassee Godby OT Brendan Loftus. Loftus is a 6-8, 290 tackle with loads of potential. His coaches believe that his best football is ahead of him. Loftus will be visiting Penn State on July 19th and he will announce his decision on July 29th at Godby’s media day. He camped at Miami in June and was extremely impressive.
**Two national kids that Miami is quietly in the game for are Jaason Lewis (ATH from Virginia Beach) and Josh Sweat (DE from Chesapeake, VA). I’m not saying that Miami leads for either one, but the staff is on both hard and interestingly Sweat is close with Miami DT Michael Wyche. Just something to keep an eye on.
**Nothing really new with Tyrek Cole. Miami still expects a flip at some point as do people close to Cole. West Virginia is not as big of a factor as some have made it seem.
**There is a similar situation with Devante Peete right now as in not much has changed. Miami still wants him, but is not trying to rush him into a commitment. I am a big fan of Peete’s as a prospect. He can really run for his size. Total mismatch problem for opposing defenses.
**Just to put in perspective the type of athlete Miami is getting in Jordan Scarlett, I will refer to a story that one of Scarlett’s coaches over the last three years (Chad Wilson) told me this week. Wilson said the first time he clocked Scarlett in the 40, he ran a 4.37 on an NFL clock. Wilson told me that he made Scarlett run it three more times because he didn’t believe the time. Scarlett clocked two 4.3s and a 4.4. He was a 9th grader.
**I have mentioned it before, but watch for South Carolina as a darkhorse for JaQuan Johnson. At this point, Miami is not panicking as it seems most fans are. They believe he is still theirs to lose.
**I said earlier this week that Miami was looking good to land American Heritage ATH Dredrick Snelson and nothing has changed there. Snelson is Joseph Yearby’s nephew and has been around campus a lot because of that.
**Despite reports elsewhere, Miami is not recruiting Rashard Causey and has not done so for months. Any report that has him committing to Miami is false.
**I need to correct myself on something. In the past I have posted that Carlton Davis was being recruited as a safety, but Miami wants him as a corner.
Twitter Questions
1) From @CaneSwagger01 – should we offer (Rodrick) Archer and do you think we will?
I like Archer as a prospect and would love to see Miami take one of these Safety/Linebacker tweener prospects a year because South Florida tends to be loaded with them. I just don’t think Miami is all that interested in him so I don’t see an offer coming his way unless something changes.
2) From @_M_I_A_M_I - How likely is Cavin (Ridley) to follow Calvin next year? And are we getting back in the pic with him and SBB?
Cavin has big grades issues he needs to focus on that before anything, but yes he would most likely follow Calvin. Miami has always been in the picture for Burgess-Becker and Ridley. That did not change when they committed to Alabama. Look for Miami to make their major push later in the cycle closer to signing day.
3) From @305sports – do you see any recruits getting the Dennis Turner treatment?
Yes, this will happen as it does every year in recruiting.
4) From @TheCMarone – Is Marcus Lewis going to flip (From UF)?
It is highly unlikely that Lewis flips to Miami.
5) From @RozaySchmidty13 – with the momentum that we have in recruiting who do you think the next 2015 commitment will be from?
I will go with Brendan Loftus.

As far as our LB corps goes, can anyone explain why Armbrister is listed as a senior? He didn't play at all his freshman year and was on the practice squad. Do you have to apply to be a redshirt, and if so, couldn't he apply next year and stay in the mix? He started a lot of games last year over the dirty Fig.

Lewis is from Ocean Lakes. My buddy is there. LSU and Clemson are hot on him, down in that area all the time per Skipper. He does a lot of things well. Not sure how he is since UCLA decommit. UNC likes him too, as does Greasy cheater homo Urban, and Fat Boy Muschump.
Sweat is from Oscar Smith in Chesapeake, state champs 2008 2011. Philip Sims was from there; he was at Bama then UVA...did not like going to class, now at Winston Salem State.
Sweat is a real beast. Skipper told me his first step and quickness make him hard to stop off the ball. He has goode size and strong hands that he uses on people like sledge hammers. Well thought of kid from great program. Everybody wants him. FSU, OSU (fuck Urban) VT, PSU, UCLA, LSU, GA, Clemson, USC, Mich St, UCLA, Oregon,TAMU....he is a really good DE....probably the best kid to come out since Clowney. Loveto have both, but Sweat would give us something we havent seen in years...he is the deal!!!
I love VA kids, get to see them some. I do not want any of my boys to go to Urban or Muschump; hate those idiots!!!!! Get on it UM

I'll believe it, when I hear it.
Several things that don't make sense...First off, Lebron's agent (Rich Paul), contacted Dan Gilbert and told em' that Lebron was leaving during the 1st "Decision", why didn't He give Riley that same courtesy?
And Lebron may want to lead a younger team, but from a social standpoint, what are they gonna do after the game, go to Chuck E Cheese? I don't even think Irving & Wiggins are old enough to drink!
But in any event, the smoke says Cleveland, we'll see...
Posted by: CaneRock | July 10, 2014 at 03:11 PM
I also saw a tweet that confirmed James was taking Wade with him to Cleveland lol..
Im a Heat fan no matter what... if he leaves I appreciate his time here.. I know Riley will get some other names in here to be competitive. Ive been riding with the Heat since Grant Long and Glenn Rice baby... aint about to stop now lol

Stephen A. Smith of ESPN was less emphatic but is hearing the same thing. "Based on what I am hearing," Smith told ESPN Radio. "LeBron goes to Cleveland, [Carmelo Anthony] goes to New York."

If all these reports are true, it's freakin' crazy how a Championship core can broken up so quickly nowadays. San Antonio is a dinosaur in today's basketball, gone are the days where Championship cores played what seemed like forever.
Posted by: CaneRock | July 10, 2014 at 03:52 PM
Tell the truth Ohio, I think you're secretly praying he returns to Cleveland.
If he stays, a lot of people in Cleveland sure are going to be embarrassed the way they're making asses out of themselves now.
I feel like most people I know, if he makes a decision to leave, he'll be doing what he feels is best for him and his family. You can't begrudge that. I'll wish him and his family well.
Miami can't complain: 4 finals, 2 NBA championships. Let that sink in. How many teams in any sport have won like that in a short period? Not many!
