Based on my extensive statistical research of the 2013 college football season, I have developed the following "Canespace Rules" (READ: identified criteria for winning) for the Miami Hurricanes during the 2014 season:
Canespace Rule #1: Offensive Points/Game Must Increase. On offense UM must go from 33.8 ppg in 2013 to 37 ppg in 2014, a difference of +3.2 ppg. In 2013 all of the top 20 offenses averaged 37 points or more per game led by Baylor. Regardless of who starts at QB in 2014, Miami has the offensive weapons and firepower to score and score often.
What the Hurricanes need is one more successful scoring drive per game that leads to at least a field goal and they will achieve this goal. Coach Coley must find a way for his offense to comply with the the Canespace 37 point rule.
Canespace Rule #2: Defensive Points/Game Must Decrease. On defense UM must go from allowing 26.8 ppg to 24 ppg, a difference of -2.8 ppg. Historically is has been shown that teams have been able to win a National Championship by holding the opposition to an average of under 27 ppg over the course of a season and UM did that in 2013 (26.8).
Eventually the UM defense has to at least partly resemble the Hurricane defenses of old if they are to win and win big. Increasing sacks and turnovers while also preventing explosive plays of 20 yards or more are the key ingredients in making the defensive turnaround at The U. Coach D'Onofrio must find a way for his defense to comply with the Canespace 24 point rule and we highly recommend that he do it now.
Canespace Rule #3: Offensive Third Down Conversion Rates Must increase. According to several of our bloggers on Canespace this may be among the most important rules of all. Many like to complain about the swiss-cheese like defense UM defense but few point their finger at the repeated three-and-outs that the offense racked up time and time again in 2013 that left their defensive brethren tired, beaten and exposed.
On offense UM must go from a .352 conversion rate up to a .420 rate. By keeping the offense on the field it protects the defense and keeps them rested, prepared and ready to rumble which leads us to...
Canespace Rule #4: Defensive Third Down Conversion Rates Must Decrease. On defense UM must go from a .419 conversion rate allowed down to a 3.50 rate. This is another critical area according to many of our bloggers. The Hurricane defense must find ways to stop allowing so many third down conversions and be able get off of the field in 2014.
The UM defense must find a way to re-instill fear into opposing offenses that find themselves in third and long situations. That is because if I see a DB lined up 10 yards off of the ball and back-pedalling on a third and seven or they give up one more first down on third and 17, then I cannot be held responsible for my actions. Or those of OGV either. No, seriously.
Canespace Rule #5: Defensive Turnovers and T/O Margin Must Increase. This rule is also known as the Canespace "20/30 Rule". That means that UM cannot have more than 20 turnovers on offense (22 in 2013) and must have at least 30 takeaways on defense (27 in 2013) to be successful in 2014.
The Hurricanes were a +5 in turnover margin in 2013 but that is simply not good enough to compete with the top teams in the Nation. Many of the best teams were at least +10 or higher and that is the company the Miami needs to keep if they are to re-ascend to their once lofty perch of competing for National titles and not in a second tier bowl game at some dank stadium in Orlando.
Canespace Rule #6: Penalties and Penalty Yards Must Decrease: This rule is also known as the Canespace "5/500 Rule". That means UM must limit their penalties to 5 or fewer per game (from 5.46) and have under 500 yards (from 582) in penalties this season.
If Nick Saban can do it at Alabama then Al Golden can do it at Miami. Yes indeed, we strongly suggest that the he and his Hurricanes do it, and do it now. Either that or you will be penalized by more than just the referees.
If UM can find a way to comply with these 6 simple rules and make the minor improvements in each of the categories I have identified then I predict that the Hurricanes will win at least 10 games, play for an ACC title and maybe even more in 2014. And please remember: Failure is NOT an option.

GC,
You were posting @BEER, not me right?
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 02:59 PM
This dynasty had to end because there wasnt enough motivation to play the kind of defense necessary for the Heat to win this third in a row.
It was fun when the Heat were trying to prove themselves but I do not believe you can stay positive when there is not as much to prove.
The Heat did not play the defense this time around that they had played in the last two championships. I do not think it was a case of needing a better bench. This year they played to get into the championship instead of having to prove something. It was time to end the misery.

LOL, he was posting to BEER, but mentioned both of U by name
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | July 11, 2014 at 03:06 PM
I totally agree mi@mic@ne. Very little effort defensively. I also think there wasn't enough rebounding and Wade is just done.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 03:12 PM
Yeah that's like have another beer, UMike.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 03:15 PM
Its just like Jimmy says when your on top its hard to motivate players. When it becomes too negative its no fun any more. Thats why the Canes have been successful because the coaches were not life time appointments.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | July 11, 2014 at 03:16 PM
At least there is hope and money with the HEAT... NOBODY is going to sign with my LAKERS until kobe leaves.:-(
Posted by: trianglecane | July 11, 2014 at 03:23 PM
Think of it this way, more time allocated for the media to pay attention to the Canes. Check out my analysis of this year's team at miamicanecountry.blogspot.com. Insight into recruiting, the quarterback questions, and how the depth chart will shape out.
Posted by: Cane Country | July 11, 2014 at 03:27 PM
Kobe demands the ball too much. Even if he comes back fully healthy and is Kobe, you can never run an offense where he will do anything off the ball that he'll believe in. He is the NBA's biggest ball hog. And what's with him always dogging on Pau Gasol? Gasol is a quality big man. The Heat should sign Gasol.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 03:29 PM
The Heat just got beat by the better team, just like they almost got beat by the better team last year.
Posted by: CaneRock | July 11, 2014 at 03:34 PM
They began to over focus on getting better bench. But the truth is it boils down to motivating players. Its not the scheme, the recruiting success, or the system. Its simply motivating a player....

I blame Mitch for the kobe deal. I blame kobe for being a douche. The next few years are going to be tough.
Posted by: trianglecane | July 11, 2014 at 03:47 PM
TriangleCane Cut the nonsense my Lakers have money and hope. and actually doing the smart thing by rebuilding the team and recouping draft picks that they gave up for the failed experiment of getting D. Coward, and Lil Stevie Nash. My Lakers will be fine besides i don't Melo pre madonna arse anyway. This trick was waiting to see what Lebron was gonna do before he make his decision. This dude has to sit down to piss. Congrats CGNC and U had the post of the day with I am taking my talents to Palm Beach! Love It.

This is insulting.
If you would like to have a discussion on beer styles, classic examples, history, subtleties of brewing (water chemistry, grain and hop bills, years selection, mashing, and so on), I'd be more than happy to educate you. I can almost guarantee I know more about beer and brewing that all of you on here combined.

The Dude yea that biggest ball hog was the key to 5 championships in 15 years. GTFOH with that BS. TriangleCane Jeanie Buss said herself that she wanted to give Kobe that deal herself on ESPNLA 710 and Jim and Mitch agreed and its a 2 year deal and if U were a real Laker fan U would know that. SMDH at U. Triangle and Dude yall must have been drinking that bad haterade juice. SMDH at yall. anyways 52 days till Gameday. Go Canes!

Phil Jackson was the key to those 5 C'ships...how many C'ships has Kobe won since He left?...I'll wait.
Posted by: CaneRock | July 11, 2014 at 04:10 PM
The Dude funny U say Kobe is always dogging Pau but Pau always maintains that the main reason he has stayed with the Lakers was because of Kobe and of course winning the 2 titles and 3 finals apperances and making roughly 115 million in his nearly 7 seasons in LA. I love Pau want him to play his remaing few years with my Lakers but U trippin big time I know U claimed U divorced the Lakers because U were a Shaq guy. I love Shaq btw but let me guess U wanna those people that claim Kobe ran Shaq off. I guess Kobe ran Shaq off from Orlando in 1996, I guess he ran Shaq off in Miami in 2008, I guess he ran Shaq off from Cleveland in 2010 too, and I guess he ran Shaq off from Boston in 2011 also. Got to love the haters man.

Correct me if I'm wrong; these r the same small towns that still probably lynch black people?
I am so not cool with this!!!
Ohio and Pennsylvania are northern states; that never happened up there. They are actually fairly good sized places that are not rural like The South>
The deep south in the mountains and hollows of Carolina, VA, KY, TN, SC, Bama, GA, Arkansas,MS, LA....FL in places... that might be a problem area for that sort of institution. It is dying out but there are occasions where someone just disappears. People who still think backwards and hateful like that are of no use to society, and when they meet their maker....well...eternity is a long time to burn.
Posted by: VA Cane | July 11, 2014 at 04:14 PM
TS,
Kobe is a ball hog, this is coming from a guy that grew up a Lakers fan. Remember the Pistons series? The guy does no work off the ball, he just stands around waiting for the ball and if he feels like no one is helping he'll start chucking up bad shots. I'll give him his respect though. He's the best scorer since Jordan and is the most creative scorer in the NBA. Still you can't run anything that's not facilitated through him. And he's a world class @hole too and no one likes him or wants to play on his team, unless of course, Phil's the coach.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 04:14 PM
Gotta love the Kobe's Duncan's Dirk's Wade's 1 player 1 team 1 city. I hate that fact that Boston traded Pierce. Last of dying breeds.I hope that Pat, Micky, do the right thing like Jeanie, Jim,Mitch did for Kobe, what Pop, Peter, Holt, did for Duncan, and what Rick and Mark did for Dirk. Take care of your own.

Whoever posted this... No, that does not happen in NE Ohio. Akron is a predominantly black community. Oh, and Akron is not a "small town". Population there is around 200,000.

Kobe and Melo the loser would never work. That whole rack of balls would not be enough. I will give Kobe this: he has a great all around game and is HOFer; he is an asshole as a person. Meloser? no gamer just a scorer no HOF and a real jerk. I would pay to see someone destroy his knee so he could never walk much less play. A jerk!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | July 11, 2014 at 04:19 PM
Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA 3m
The Chicago Bulls are gauging interest with free agent Dwyane Wade, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.
Oh hell.............
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | July 11, 2014 at 04:19 PM
I'm not hating on Kobe. All of these things are facts bro. And yeah, Kobe did run off Shaq, there's no question about that.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 04:22 PM
Thanks everyone! Still in Charlotte until the end of August per the boss's request which is ok, I can use the shillings.
I have hope for The Heat - they have $$ and an owner committed to winning which is more than some other South Florida sports teams can say
Posted by: CGNC | July 11, 2014 at 04:24 PM
Kobe is actually a true pleasure to watch because you never know when he's going to do something no one else can do. And he's not afraid to close them game. He just acts spoiled all the time to his teammates and to the media. Of course Pau will say its Kobe, Pau is a class act and puts his teammates first, even that @hole Kobe.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 04:26 PM
Shaq was a championship chaser at the end when he was past his prime. He didn't need to leave LA to chase anymore championships and yeah LA didn't want to trade him. Kobe told them its him or me. Phil confirmed that. I never said Kobe wasn't instrumental in those 5 rings, Kobe was great for the Lakers, but look at what he is NOW.
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 04:29 PM
@hole Kobe
He is an asshole, but I give him his due; he has a great all around game and wants to win. Meloser wants to win by him scoring and thats it. Loser never want him to win want to see him hammered.
Wade has been a great player, but I do not think either him or CB command that kind of $. Wade is on the downside and CB is just not that good.
Posted by: VA Cane | July 11, 2014 at 04:30 PM
The Heat need to pay Wade and UD and make sure those guys end their careers with the Heat. Give both 3 year deals and let them retire at the same time they came in together the same time. I hope Pau plays just 2 more years both with my Lakers and him and Kobe can retire together. I know Kobe, Wade, UD, Duncan, Dirk are past their primes but its something to see guys play their whole career with 1 team in 1 city.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | July 11, 2014 at 04:53 PM
Sull_ ive been a lakers fan since birth.
No one wants to play with kobe. Kobes contract sucks for the team.
Lakers will not win a title on four aging kneeskobe and gasol.
I am not rooting against my lakers. I just see it differently. No non sence here.
I didnt want melo, but you tell me what scenario brings a ship to LA next.year?
Posted by: trianglecane | July 11, 2014 at 04:55 PM
TriangleCane truth is we aren't winning any titles in the next few years it sucks but that's our reality. Only thing our Lakers can do is field a competitive team and regain what we lost in picks keep our cap flexibility for future years. We are going through the rebuilding years. The Kobe/Triangle era is over and we are in rebuild mode just like the Magic/Kareem Showtime era was over we had to rebuild in the 90's. It sucks but that's our reality as Laker Fans. We will be back. Just will be a few years.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | July 11, 2014 at 05:04 PM
No title will come to LA for a long time. Kobe has grown selfish in his twilight. He is great but never Jordan. He overestimates how good he is at his age and he does not understand that at his age recovery from the serious injury he suffered will not be easy.
Posted by: VA Cane | July 11, 2014 at 05:06 PM
Lakers goals need to be KLove and Westbrook and Durant in FA. Just need to put enough parts around Kobe in the meantime, and good luck doing that, no coach still?
Posted by: The Dude | July 11, 2014 at 05:08 PM
The Lakers screwed up when they didn't bring PJ back.
Posted by: CaneRock | July 11, 2014 at 05:09 PM
Byron Scott will coach the Lakers.

G'day Canes. Tough day for Heat fans. May not be one of you but am as stunned as anyone that LBJ would think Cleveland is better for him right now. As a long suffering Kings fan, I'd still take the past 4 years, though.
Posted by: j.w. | July 11, 2014 at 05:22 PM
I have a feeling beer is brewing a deuce right now after his 10th miller lite.
On another note, I've had Heat tickets since back at the old Miami Arena. Seen a lot and this too shall pass.
Miami is a 1st class organization and this tine will always be attractive to all free agents. By 2016 this team will be back at or near the top.
Posted by: Go Canes | July 11, 2014 at 05:30 PM
I think Kobe will be a mere shadow of himself and his presence will hurt the team, and will tarnish his legacy. He has seen the better days, and I do not think he is going to contribute to a title. He really should have retired with the injury and freed the team to move onto another phase, instead of paying him that $. He was paid well, did not command that kind of $. JMO
I do not follow too much hoops; Football is the game for me. I respect LBJ he is a good guy.

I feel like Ohio has the largest number of big cities that you wouldn't necessarily think are good size cities of all the states. Which is why OSU has a huge recruiting advantage -- hotbed of talent due to the large population with no real in-state rival competition for those kids.

I do not know much about brewing beer; always bought mine and kept it cold.
Having said that, I grew up about an hour from Boones Mill, Penhook; in Franklin County VA. Look it up; or go to this link. I grew up playing softball, baseball, and football against some good old boys. Got to know their kin and families.
I know a hell of a lot about making bootleg whiskey; Franklin County is the MS Capital of the world!!!! I would bet I could drink much more of that home brew than you could drink of the worlds finest shine. It will really grab you. I have some of the best old recipes in world for it. You would be amazed how smooth it goes down and how good it tastes; you would be really amazed how it can make you hallucinate and be out like a light.
Thats why I am a hillbilly; VA Country Azz Cane!!!!!!!!!
