On Canespace we have a blogger who posts his comments as "The Dude".
If you know something about movies "The Dude" is a character played by Jeff Bridges in a movie that has become somewhat of a cult classic called The Big Lebowski. If you never have seen the movie well then you should. Here is a brief summary of the plot from WikiPedia:
The Big Lebowski is a 1998 crime comedy film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Cohen. It stars Jeff Bridges as Jeff Lebowski, an unemployed Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler nicknamed "the Dude". After a case of mistaken identity, the Dude is introduced to a millionaire also named Jeffrey Lebowski. When the millionaire Lebowski's trophy wife is kidnapped, he commissions the Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release. The plan goes awry when the Dude's friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) schemes to keep the full ransom.
The Big Lebowski was a disappointment at the U.S. box office and received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Reviews have tended towards the positive over time and the film has become a cult favorite, noted for its idiosyncratic characters, dream sequences, unconventional dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack.
In Miami there was this guy who played basketball that was apparently known as "The King".
Lebron "King" James helped bring two NBA titles to South Florida in the last four years but has now decided that simply wasn't good enough for him.
So, he has taken his talents with him back to his native Ohio. James finally and formally announced yesterday that he is going to leave the Miami Heat and play for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Who leaves sunny, warm, beautiful Miami to go to old, cold, dank Clevelend?
Well, Lebron James does, that's who.
So while "The King" may have abdicated his throne in Miami, "The Dude" still abides on Canespace. What lessons we may all learn from these events still remains to be seen.

Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 01:48 PM
UMike,
Somehow we make it through with the daughters. I don't envy you without a "filter" i.e. significant other to deflect some of the questions. My youngest is rapidly closing in on 18 and trust me, things can get pretty squirrely as they grow up.

Posted by: UMike | July 17, 2014 at 02:19 PM
I think the jet was out of the range of the rebels. Either a surface to air missle from the Ukrainians or Russians, a jet fighter from the Ukrainians or Russians, or a malfunction of the jet itself.
Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 02:23 PM
Soup, that puts it in perspective. If Putin's separatists are responsible for this I hope they get what's coming to them.

Lebron's decision to return to Cleveland was all about his desire to maintain and improve his "brand". It is all about marketing people. More on that later.

"Johnson will get most of the carries this fall, but sophomore Gus Edwards (6-2, 233), true freshman Joseph Yearby (5-9, 180) and sophomore fullback Walter Tucker (6-0, 218) will be in the mix. He said Edwards is ahead of Yearby, who is coming off a broken fibula. Tucker, who last year moved from linebacker to running back, has special teams experience but hasn’t been a part of the backfield rotation."
I wonder if Walter Tucker might now be moved back into the LB rotation?
Posted by: roachcane77 | July 17, 2014 at 03:23 PM
We don't need tucker at LB. He should be used as a fullback. Even with those two knuckleheads gone the youngsters Wil be good. We have Perryman the best MLB in college football, Thurston has been here and Grace or youngsters behind them as added depth.

Posted by: WWIN | July 17, 2014 at 03:48 PM
CR,
I think up until now the airliners thought they weren't targets of the Russians or Ukrainians. The rebels don't have the technology to launch missles 30,000+ feet. But I also agree, don't fly through war zones.
Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 04:19 PM
So now, as if the airplane being shot down by a Russian missle wasn't enough, Israel launches a huge groud and air offensive against Gaza.
#OyVey
Posted by: SOUP | July 17, 2014 at 04:28 PM
It appears that Israel may be using this plane crash as an opportunity to invade Gaza. I'm so sick of war and waste right now I could scream.
The U.S. spent over 30% of our GDP on the military last year. Russia and China COMBINED SPENT LESS THAN 20%. We are being fleeced by the military industrial complex just like Ike predicted over 60 years ago.
Welfare: It's not just for iPhones and crab legs anymore!!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | July 17, 2014 at 04:39 PM
The rebels are getting all their hardware from Russia. My wife is in Ukraine about 100 miles from the fighting. She had to go last month because her dad had a stroke. Coming back in 3 weeks-I told her today she might have to get out of dodge sooner
Posted by: TJL | July 17, 2014 at 04:44 PM
No joke Sota. I saw it so much in the Navy its a joke. Congress won't let the Marine Corps scrap thousands of Humvees they say aren't safe for Marines vs IEDs because the companies that outfit them don't want to. So we field a fleet of basically obsolete war vehicles. We build ships no one wants too.
Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 04:51 PM
Israel has been planning an invasion for a while now. They've overreacted again.
Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 04:52 PM
Dude I was in the Army for 4 years and also the Florida and Colorado National Guard for 4 more. The military is a joke.
Not the rank and file men and women who serve mind you, but the scumbags who run the show right up to the politicians at all levels who line their pockets with our money.
You know damn well we will eventually be back in Iraq, and before it's all said and done we will have given the merchants of death another trillion or two of our money.
Our country is morally and soon to be financially bankrupt.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | July 17, 2014 at 04:57 PM
The Israeli's had every right to go get the murderers who killed the three Israeli kids. As I red it they had already identified the murderers and had rounded up most of them before this conflict even started.
But of course that wasn't enough. They took a legitimate police action as a precursor to start a full blown war. Not unlike Bush and Cheney who concocted the WMD story to invade Iraq when all we wanted them to do was bring Bin Laden to justice.
I'm over it. I swear if there is a peace march anytime soon here in Atlanta you can guarantee that I will be there.
And if there's a rally up here to legalize weed you'll see me there as well!! ;-)
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | July 17, 2014 at 05:03 PM
But we can't cut military spending, lol. That would send a bad message.
We could cut so much money w/o a single soldier/sailor/marine or airman losing their jobs. We could cut millions and still have the best force on Earth.
Worlds largest airforce? U.S. Air Force.
Worlds 2nd largest airforce? U.S. Navy.
Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 05:04 PM
We can't have you on the wacky tobaccy Sota. We need you fit for full duty for WW3.
Posted by: The Dude | July 17, 2014 at 05:06 PM
Exactly right about Israel. Go get the bad guys responsible. Instead they're only creating more terrorists in the future. They just killed 4 little boys on the beach. That's going to cause some very bad blood.

Yes, there's a lot that can be improved all over the US including wasteful spending in ALL branches of government, not just the military. There are other areas of government where much more is wasted, where fraud and theft are rampant.
But all in all, this is still the best place to live. If there are better places, happily renounce your citizenship and go there. But you won't, because with all our faults, and there's plenty, I would rather live here than anywhere else.
'merica? Damn right...and it's America
