Behind two defensive touchdowns and another score that was set up by a blocked punt, Killian took down Carol City 20-16 in the season debut for both teams.
“It’s Miami Killian. That’s how we do things around here,” Killian coach Cory Johnson said of his team’s tradition of defense. “That’s how I came up [playing for Killian]. That’s how we’re going to keep it around here.”
With Carol City leading 16-13 and driving, it appeared the Chiefs were in control, but Sheldrick Redwine took an interception 53 yards down the sideline for the game-winning score early in the fourth quarter.
Jaquan Johnson sealed it in the final minute with an interception on a deep pass on fourth down.
Johnson also scored in the first quarter on an 11-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown on a screen pass that went backwards. Redwine blocked the punt that set up Cliff Smith’s 1-yard keeper for a touchdown.

COACHING: Whether he's been at Louisville, Arkansas or Western Kentucky, Petrino's offenses have always been among the nation's best. He's 83-30 in nine seasons as a college head coach and inherits a program for the first time in his career that is already good. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham spent his last four years at Georgia where the Bulldogs averaged 33 sacks a season over the last three years and ranked in the Top 36 in scoring defense every season but last. Canes coach Al Golden (58-53 in nine seasons) brings back all but one coach from last season and finally has the NCAA cloud in the rear view mirror for the first time in his tenure in Coral Gables. In the end, Petrino's track record is better than Golden's and defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio. Edge: Louisville.
PREDICTION: Louisville 34, UM 27

This article breezes right past two critical points on its way to predicting a Louisville victory:
- Louisville lost seven starters on defense
- Louisville switched defensive schemes in the offseason
So, look, even if Petrino's offense is just as good as last year's -- despite losing Bridgewater and Parker -- it would be utterly shocking if Louisville fielded a team equal to last year's.
And Miami has Duke Johnson at 100%.

I can already tell agendas are obviously being established in case we lose. We won't lose (I hope, pray), but I can see the writing on the wall by some.
Posted by: Lurker | August 31, 2014 at 02:49 PM
There's no agenda Lurker. This team has to win this game and compete in every other game or we need to look for a new coaching staff.
Butch Davis is chomping at the bit to get his job back at UM and I see no reason to make him wait if we look anything like we did last season.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | August 31, 2014 at 03:10 PM
Don't agree. There are agendas. Trust me.
Also, they don't have to win tomorrow necessarily, even though I think they will.
There are will be between 12 -14 games to play. If you want to piss in the wind for Butch then, that's fine, but whatever happens, he will never coach the Canes again.

...he will never coach the Canes again.
Posted by: Lurker | August 31, 2014 at 03:25 PM
If UM were to be looking for a new coach in the next 12-24 months I can't think of anyone more qualified than Butch. As stated many many times he's also interested in coaching the 'canes again if the "opportunity" were to present itself again.
Golden moved his "clock" up a year when he was flirting with Pedo State last January. It's "put up or shut up" time for his regime and that begins tomorrow night.
I expect the 'canes to go up there and take care of business. The blogs will be a garbage dump if they don't.

I bet when Patrino left UL some fans thought that guy will never be back here lol

Since we're going to win all our games, there's no need to worry about changing head coaches.

However I am all in for Golden! He has shown loyalty and I am rooting for him to become our next great coach. Recruit, develop and WIN BABY it's

That's exactly my point. UL reminds me more of the old canes than we do. It hurts to say that.
I didn't post today because I think UM is going to lose tomorrow, I was just pointing out that if UM plays the way they did in the bowl game then we will not have an "agenda" if we're all pissed! In fact if you're not pissed and start defending another season of mediocrity right out of the gate then that is an "agenda".

That's the only agenda I see on the horizon if anything!! Go Canes and 30C already have theirs lined up lol
Posted by: WWIN | August 31, 2014 at 05:21 PM
Well you all can play your little head games, here's reality. This team, while it has significantly improved on the talent front, is not anywhere near having enough talent on the two-deep to be a real championship contender. If you think otherwise, then you haven't been paying attention. We should be there in next one or two recruiting classes.
A 9-3 regular season record, with a bowl win (hopefully) is about where this team is.
So to say they better win tomorrow, or else, is clearly agenda driven. Let the season play out.

Lurker, Louisville is starting all over, just hit the reset button, we've been playing this game for the 4th year, and we shouldn't win????
New offense, new quarterback, new defense, new conference, best player is hurt, and REVENGE should be on the table!!!!

Absolutely I'm a fan. I'm all about the canes. But I'm also a realist, and would hate to see the poison some people are just itching to spew. Comments like "they better win" etc, tell me what's up.
I plan to enjoy watching my canes play, and especially watching them win. I hope we win them all, but also have a sober view of the talent situation. If they exceed expectations and go 12-0 regular season, nobody will be happier than me. Realistically, I think 9-3/8-4 is more likely.
But whatever happens, I remain a fan and know we are headed in the right direction.

I get entirely what you are saying, and under different circumstances I'd like to have Butch back too. But post-NCAA, Golden finally has recruiting rolling. The 2015 class is good, the 2016 class may be spectacular. However the quickest way to reverse that is to start speculation that Golden is leaving or to clamor for Butch. This is what slowly but steadily obliterated Randy Shannon's 2011 class, leaving us with just 2 recruits still committed by the time he was gone.
We cannot have another yet another lost class. And keep in mind, that the risk is that we lose two classes, just like Texas faces. Recruiting is a two year process. So let's assume Golden moves on, and Butch signs in December:
1) He has to immediately scramble to salvage the class. Just like Golden had to do in 2010, and Shannon in 2006. It could be a situation like '10 where there's no one left, and there's little time to flip quality players. So the 2015 class likely takes a big hit
2) As recruiting is really a two year process, the 2016 class is damaged as well. Davis will have to work to shore that up.
The result is possibly two damaged recruiting classes. Butch does not land a good class until 2017, after having coached for two years. At that point the overall talent level is down, and Butch is rebuilding with youth. And in Year Three and Four, how patient is the fan base? A fan base dreaming of 2001? Is Butch forced out after a 7-5 season? Then the process repeats again.
FSU is who they are because of consistency of staff. Fischer is the inhouse successor to the Bowden, so the Seminoles did not suffer the dropoff that Texas, Miami, and other schools faced during a coaching turnover. They have been able to have four great, consecutive recruiting classes. Let's let Golden do the same, unimpeded by NCAA sanctions, before we rush to judgment.

Look like green helmet. Im guessing a white jersey. Glad to see the green back.
Posted by: trianglecane | August 31, 2014 at 07:07 PM
I wanted butch back when most of us thought golden was gone. But I want a good quality win. And since petrino is guaranteeing wins.. I say we get them in a blow them out at home. Statement game in front of the world while all eyes will be glued on the canes. Let's go boys!!

You know who recruited a badass football team? Ron Zook.
There's no question Golden has the recruiting thing rolling. But the point of college football is to win games, and not to stockpile players. It just CAN'T be unfair to expect wins to materialize in season four.

Moonbat, Golden has recruited well enough in 2012, 2013, and 2014 to have the second or third best team in the ACC (on paper). That was with NCAA sanctions impacting a majority of the recruiting. But there's still a substantial difference between that and what FSU did (which is equivalent to what Alabama has done). Unimpeded, you see what is coming in 2016. The NCAA thing basically nullified years one and two for Golden, and affected year three. For me, his tenure starts tomorrow to a large extent.
Posted by: TonyCane | August 31, 2014 at 07:50 PM
Due to the experience and strength of the roster, between 2011 and 2013, 2011 was the best shot for Miami to win double digits. Transfers and suspensions had a big impact.
2012 and 2013 saw a depleted roster due to the transfers and poor recruiting in the 2010 class. The overall talent level declined and the majority of Miami's best players were true freshmen or sophomores.
In 2014 that changes for the first time.
Posted by: TonyCane | August 31, 2014 at 07:54 PM
LOL at DJ Moonbat Ron Zook took over a 10-2 Florida team that was ranked 3rd in the country with no impending Sanctions no suspensions or nothing and his record was 8-5 in 2002, 8-5 in 2003 and 7-4 didn't coach bowl game, Al Golden took over a 7-6 team and in his first year sent 6-6 in 2011 several players missed games and team self imposed bowl ban, 7-5 in 2012 self imposed bowl ban, 2013 9-4 and we shall see what happens this season. But your comparison to the Zooker is laughable. U aren't the only one making that claim it's laughable nonetheless. Go Canes.
