Gray skies opened up for the second consecutive day and once again postponed the start of day 2 of the University of Miami's Fall training camp, this time for over an hour. As you can imagine, the players grew restless as they waited for the gray clouds to clear so they could take the field and get in some quality work on Greentree Field.
Speaking of gray (or is it grey?), day 2 of Canes camp saw the emergence of the freshman player that some have already anointed the next "Great One" at Miami, RB/ATH Trayone Gray. Gray struggled and had to work hard just to get qualified at UM and was finally cleared for practice on Tuesday.
Gray didn't waste any time once on the field as he showed flashes of why many believe that he will be an impact player this year along with running mate Joseph Yearby in the Hurricanes backfield behind possible Heisman Trophy candidate Duke Johnson and hard running Sophomore Gus Edwards.
Gray, who measures 6'2" and weighed in at 222 pounds, is big and fast. On one play that showed what he is capable of, he took a simple screen pass from QB Jake Heaps and rambled past the UM defense for what would have been a touchdown during 11 on 11 drills.
Offensive coordinator James Coley suddenly has a backfield crowded with talent which is always a nice problem to have. With Duke getting a majority of the touches this season it may be tough to keep all of the running backs happy and well fed. It will be up to Coach Coley to figure out how best to do that.
As for another shade of gray (or is it grey?), former QB Gray Crow showed that he is fitting in at his new H-back position, catching the ball nicely from all of four of the Hurricane QBs.
Crow, a hard worker and long-time Canespace fan favorite, will hope to get some quality playing time at his new position this season.
We wish our man Gray Crow, newcomer Trayone Gray, anybody else named Gray that we may have left out and all the UM players, a healthy and productive training camp and a successful 2014 season.
#Go Canes!

Basketball is and has always been my favorite sport to play. A basketball court is a peaceful place for me, even in the mist of trash talk and hard fouls. But the NBA hasnt been the same since the late 90's when dudes averaging 12 points started getting max deals and the NBA tried to make superstars out of average players.

Hell yeah. I still to this day, don't understand Riley's infatuation with "Hot Rod" Williams...and Juwan Howard.
Posted by: CaneRock | August 08, 2014 at 01:49 PM
CR.. or when the Heat signed Brian Grant to a max deal after ONE good playoff.. dude wasnt even a starter for Portland. Riley feel pray to the NBA at that time, tried giving Howard a max deal also. He learned lol

If you freeze a video highlight, Gray has a frame that looks similar to Taylor. And if you watch him in slo-mo, he certainly looks like he's making lots of great moves. But I haven't seen any film that would suggest he's got anywhere near Sean Taylor's speed. He looks like he's running maybe a 4.5 -- adequate, but nothing freakish.

Really think that way about the NBA, guys? I think that league is second only to the NFL in terms of smart marketing, brand identity, and is better now than ever.
Posted by: j.w. | August 08, 2014 at 02:23 PM
j.w... I think the marketing and brand is doing fine... I wont argue that, the NBA is popular... but as far as the game itself goes.. its dropped off IMO. Basketball is a distance third to NFL and NCAACF imo.

I did not know that if a kids signs the Grant-In-Aid with us, and then flips its a violation on Miami!!! I would assume that Golden strongly believes Dexter will not flip. Then again, we didnt get in trouble when Cook didnt sign with us.. not sure how this rule works.
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 06:43 AM
-----------------------------------------------------
It's only a violation if they don't sign because the school pulled it. They can commit where they want and doesn't hurt us.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 08, 2014 at 02:32 PM
djm,
You're right, but he's only a freshman, he's a long strider right now and isn't as explosive as Taylor. But, we'll see, the tools are there and he can get more explosive after working w/ Swasey.

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 08, 2014 at 02:32 PM
So, its totally safe for us to do this with the guys we are taking no matter what. Fringe guys who are committed but we are waiting on studs won't get this treatment.

Put Gray at FS, I said that about 2 weeks ago!!
Posted by: WWIN | August 08, 2014 at 02:41 PM
^^^^^^^^^^^
Might as well move him this year instead of next year. Cuz what we gon do with all the RB's coming in next year??
Posted by: WWIN | August 08, 2014 at 02:44 PM
WWIN.. we are short at RB this year. And we have safety depth this year.
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 02:49 PM

Posted by: The Dude | August 08, 2014 at 02:33 PM
Even right now, he strikes me as a more explosive big back than Gus the Bus. But just as I don't see him becoming as fast as ST, I don't see him becoming like McGahee, who wasn't just "fast for such a big back," but was just plain fast.
Posted by: dj moonbat | August 08, 2014 at 02:55 PM
As long as Gray runs a 4.5, 4 6 points...I'M GOOD!
Posted by: CaneRock | August 08, 2014 at 02:55 PM
I know he was fast enough to pull away from all the boys on Central lol.. game fast is what matters anyway. Taylor ran a 4.5 before the draft, but at his size that is fast and Im sure he was capable of a 4.4.
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 02:59 PM
Also.. I never meant to say he was as fast as Taylor.. I meant he is just a great athlete that he COULD literally be the best on the team at a couple different positions.

Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 02:59 PM
I dunno, I haven't seen any film where he's leaving anybody in the dust.
That's not to say the guy's not fast enough to make plenty of big plays, in combination with his fluidity and vision, both of which seem very, very good.

The only player Gray reminds me of, is Anquan Boldin. I think He eventually ends up at WR.

As long as we don't pull his scholarship, yes. Doesn't matter where he picks. Only helps us for them to sign agreement. Gives us unlimited contact.

Jake Heaps hits Stacy Coley on a pretty end-zone fade. Thrown right over Antonio Crawford. They high-five afterward.

TG = highlight reels. Great stuff.
What makes it better is his classroom effort; most impressive in class on field. I am taking him as my guy!!!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | August 08, 2014 at 04:56 PM
Hope SC is ok....him and Gray on field at same time is dangerous!!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | August 08, 2014 at 04:56 PM
VA I agree Gray's work in the class room is very impressive. Hey paid the cost of time and effort to be a cane. He did the extra work despite ppl saying he couldn't make it. I will take that guy as a team mate any time!
Posted by: fmcane | August 08, 2014 at 05:03 PM
Lets hold off on the Sean Taylor stuff people look all world on greentree then look horrible in games.. Jordan Futch, Arthur Brown(who just got his spot snatched by Mosley from Bama) . I wouldnt say that T.Gray is slow but Taylor was stride for STRIDE with Randy Moss !! Vikings Randy Moss his rookie year and broke that play up .

Not sure if this link has been posted yet, but its Canes Camp Day 3. Warning, its a No'D interview. I skipped ahead to plays of the day w/o volume and on the first play I was like, oh man Duke looks good, only I turn the volume on to discover, that's not Duke, that's Joe Yearby, lol. The kid looks for real.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | August 08, 2014 at 05:25 PM
I would say the same for predictions on the year. We should wait until camp is over . And I am praying that we come out injury free and with the best to start at QB this year . #Kaaya

LQ,
You had a point on the comparisons thing, but you lost me BIG TIME on the record predictions.

They've got a post practice interview w/ Erik Flowers up on CanesAllAccess now. No mention whatsoever of Stacy Coley.

Back to the Gray/Taylor thing for just a sec, I just want to say that no one, not UMike or myself is saying that this kid is as good as Sean, who is in my opinion the most gifted athlete to play his position EVER, we are just saying that when you watch Gray play, he has some Sean Taylor in his game. That's no disrespect to Sean, but a complement to Gray and his game.

I figured that, that's why I posted that tweet about Coley catching a TD right after his comment!

Gray is an outstanding athlete,, but he is built differently from Taylor, and he is a different kind of player. Taylor was a little taller and longer. Gray looks a little more like a RB or receiver. Gray has put on some weight since high school, but Gray has good football instincts and makes lots of explosive plays. Gray also plays with a chip on his shoulder and feels he has something to prove. Gray will play this year and he will have an impact as a freshman.
