Gray skies opened up for the second consecutive day and once again postponed the start of day 2 of the University of Miami's Fall training camp, this time for over an hour. As you can imagine, the players grew restless as they waited for the gray clouds to clear so they could take the field and get in some quality work on Greentree Field.
Speaking of gray (or is it grey?), day 2 of Canes camp saw the emergence of the freshman player that some have already anointed the next "Great One" at Miami, RB/ATH Trayone Gray. Gray struggled and had to work hard just to get qualified at UM and was finally cleared for practice on Tuesday.
Gray didn't waste any time once on the field as he showed flashes of why many believe that he will be an impact player this year along with running mate Joseph Yearby in the Hurricanes backfield behind possible Heisman Trophy candidate Duke Johnson and hard running Sophomore Gus Edwards.
Gray, who measures 6'2" and weighed in at 222 pounds, is big and fast. On one play that showed what he is capable of, he took a simple screen pass from QB Jake Heaps and rambled past the UM defense for what would have been a touchdown during 11 on 11 drills.
Offensive coordinator James Coley suddenly has a backfield crowded with talent which is always a nice problem to have. With Duke getting a majority of the touches this season it may be tough to keep all of the running backs happy and well fed. It will be up to Coach Coley to figure out how best to do that.
As for another shade of gray (or is it grey?), former QB Gray Crow showed that he is fitting in at his new H-back position, catching the ball nicely from all of four of the Hurricane QBs.
Crow, a hard worker and long-time Canespace fan favorite, will hope to get some quality playing time at his new position this season.
We wish our man Gray Crow, newcomer Trayone Gray, anybody else named Gray that we may have left out and all the UM players, a healthy and productive training camp and a successful 2014 season.
#Go Canes!
Lots of young talent, but plenty of it... and geez the secondary is deep!
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 09:38 AM
Aside from Deon Bush, who in that secondary has really shown us anything? Maybe Tracy Howard, although I'd say his results have been mixed. The rest, though, are almost completely unproven. Sure, they're probably better than Highsmith. But beyond that, we just have to watch and see.

dj.. I didnt say they should be all world, just saying there is plenty of talent there, especially at the safety spot.

I never like Corn Elder @ CB and from the looks of it, he's having a real tough time in practice. That said, I see what the staff must see, he has really fast hips and is one of the quickest turners I can remember. I think in time, he can be really good there.

When I had my 2nd interview for this new job, there was a framed letter from President George H. Bush, that he sent to a lady that worked there back in 1991... I have to take a picture of this paragraph that read..
"We must not allow ourselves to be measured by the sum of our possessions or the size of our bank accounts. The true measure of any individual is found in the way he or she treats others – and the person who regards others with love, respect and charity holds a priceless treasure in his heart."

Whats scary... its possible they could move Gray to safety and him be the best safety on the team lol

I might get that tatted on me.... once I get skinny of course lol
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 10:22 AM
Totally agree about Gray. He might be a better safety than RB. He just has freaky talent in a frame that can play RB, WR, S or LB.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | August 08, 2014 at 10:22 AM
I HATE to do it... but Gray is similar to Sean Taylor in many ways
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 10:35 AM
NOOOOO!!!! Why UMike, why? Why did you just do that? Why? Lol.
Yeah, I think the same thing, I've said so before, that statement is one of the hardest things you will ever type, lol.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | August 08, 2014 at 10:41 AM
Dude, the U of Ohio. Unless you weren't saying that.
Posted by: Lurker | August 08, 2014 at 10:45 AM
I ALWAYS want the most talented guy with the ball IN HIS HANDS. If U put him on defense they just schemem away from him and he basically becomes irrelvant.
Unless of course U are Sean Taylor and then nobody can ever make U irrelevant.
EVER.
Posted by: 86Cane | August 08, 2014 at 10:46 AM
Dude.. I know man.. I know!!! I swear, even when you talk to fans of other schools, they always, at least in my experience, always praise Taylor as one of a kind. I know a few SEC fans and they couldnt say enough about Taylor when is name was brought up. Once in a lifetime player and I was blessed to see him play.

UMike, I think the new scholarship written offers are a bit different than you think. As I understand it, the school can issue a written scholarship offer after a certain date based on the prospect's class standing. . It is binding on the school for 1 year of education.. The student is not obligated so it is kind of a one way street.
What does the school get? They get different levels of access and contact than if they hadn't made the agreement.
Bottom line is that before national signing day, the student can walk and the school is committed.

U Mike,
Thanks for the post of that comment. G H is a remarkable kind man. That is a great saying, and we can all learn from it. Since leaving office he has been quiet, helping people and does not criticize other presidents. Amazing what he does at his age; hope I can be that way. Thanks for the words!!!!
Posted by: Va Cane | August 08, 2014 at 11:01 AM
Mountain.. I understand all that, and I see all the beneits of the Grant-in-Aid agreement, but I was readying a few places that if said player does not attend that school after signing the agreement, the school is in violation. It may not even be true, but a lot of people are talking about it. Just not sure how THAT PART works... if true.
Posted by: UMike | August 08, 2014 at 11:02 AM
NP VA... When I read the letter I just knew I wanted to remember those words.

I think we are going to see LG#37 & DC#25 lay the wood to some folks this year...hopefully to a receiver and not a RB making it past the LB's.

I think he should move to LB. He's already 6'2" 222Lb. I guarantee he will add another 20LB of muscle under Swasey! This guy is going to be beast!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | August 08, 2014 at 11:31 AM
KYCane! Awesome its gonna be a blast.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 08, 2014 at 11:33 AM
I thing Gray is already scary @ 6'2" 222LB without even 1 day of weight training @ U TOUGH!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | August 08, 2014 at 11:34 AM
Gray is best suited at RB to start out. Can be used in third down situations where he can be a threat catching passed out of the backfield.
Also take a look at my take on Brad Kaaya and his chances of winning the starting job.
