NEW BLOG IS UP!

CoCane

TS,

I pissed in D'no and Golden's flakes. Want a bowl? I ain't got no milk though. Lol

Dude on a Pale Horse

ATTENTION CANESPACE! DO NOT EAT THE CORNFLAKES!

Dude on a Pale Horse

Haha TS.

Terrance Sullivan

Lol I guess someone pissed in U all cornflakes this morning.

Dude on a Pale Horse

The other thing I hate? How Al responds to the question of whether or not his D can work... "it did once a long time ago against bad competition."

Dude on a Pale Horse

I hate the punching bag approach we take on D. I'd much rather be the puncher. Again, I'm hoping we the fans have put the pressure on to demand better from Al & Mark.

jcane

Anyone remember Todd Berry, our qb coach from the Kyle Wright days? He now coaches U-L Monroe, the team that beat Wake Forest yesterday, completely shutting them down defensively.

Also, on an interesting note, Wisconsin tends to be pretty good year in and year out, and almost took down LSU yesterday (blew a nice lead). I don't think they've finished with a top 25 recruiting class once in the last 5 years, fwiw.

Okay, moving on to Monday. Some defense, por favor????

mi@mic@ne

I am excited to see the new talent tomorrow night.....I hope they prove me wrong

mi@mic@ne

All I know is that Gundy took a bunch of under sized freshman and wrecked havoc on fsu offense. Guys were going up field and swarming to the ball. The proof is right there.

CoCane

I see exactly what Wannstedt is talking about. The scheme they run will never work. It defeats the purpose of defense. I hope Wannstedt's comments are based on the last 3 years and not a recent practice. If Golden and D'no have made necesssary adjustments they'll be good. If not, I'll be rotflmfao reading the state of hysteria on this blog...

PURE COKE

CaneRock

Regardless of what us fans, or former players think of the defense, we cheer for UM regardless. I CAN'T WAIT! for tomorrow night!

SinisterCane

Judgment Day is coming for NOFENSE

VA Cane

I looked for the Wanstead comments did not see.....but man those people who blog over there are something else. I had not read any comments in a long time years from there......wow. We got loser degenerates in VA....guess God dropped some down there too. What losers who know nothing about sports. If I owned that paper there would be no blog. What offensive negative losers. Makes ya appreciate Da Space No? Thanks Soup for this real blog.

We may disagree here and there, but I think we get over it can say sorry or I was wrong and do pull for our guys to win and do well on and off the field. I am very impressed by the positive work all of you have put in since fall practice...lots of great friendship and enthusiasm.

Go Cane Win on Monday!!!

Dave winestat says he is baffled by how um plays d. Lol!

Barry:

### I asked several UM players and officials for tangible reasons why this defense will be better after finishing 89th last season.

Among their answers: better defensive line depth with the additions of Chad Thomas, Trent Harris and Demetrius Jackson; the instincts and physicality that Dallas Crawford will bring to safety; talent and depth at cornerback; and the belief that Calvin Heurtelou, Courtel Jenkins and eventually Michael Wyche will be slightly better at defensive tackle than Curtis Porter (out of football), Justin Renfrow (cut by Arizona last week) and Luther Robinson (cut today by Green Bay).

Anthony Chickillo cited another reason: “Our defense is an NFL system and you have to put in the work. Guys are taking the initiative to learn it more” than past years.

Cornerback Tracy Howard said one reason for that increased player diligence is “we got a lot of distractions out of the program,” declining to elaborate.

Still, one UM person voiced concern about how UM will defend runs to the perimeter.

In general, “how they play defense is just crazy,” Fox analyst and former UM assistant and ex-Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said. “I’m pulling for them but they have some issues.”

### Some former UM players are restless with the state of the program.

“It’s a short leash this year,” Brett Romberg said this offseason. “Excuses are over. You’ve getting good athletes. No excuses any more! You’re seeing the same mistakes, and that’s coaching.

“They aren’t capable of running a 3-4 defense [which they will play sometimes]. Their linebackers aren’t capable of holding the gap in a 3-4. Bill Belichick was able to get the most even when he didn’t have great talent on his lines.”

Clinton Portis likes Al Golden --- "he's the right man for the job" --- but said: “For what we’re used to in a defensive coordinator, it’s not up to our standards. But we also don’t have the defensive linemen, linebackers and secondary we’re used to, don’t have playmakers who command double teams, don’t have linebackers who wreak havoc. But you have to give Mark D’Onofrio something to work with.”

And Randal Hill said: “Fans are spoiled because it’s Miami. And rightfully so. Butch Davis went through sanctions and won games. You can’t just win against only teams with losing records. A lot of former players want to see better defense and a better team. Are they going in the right direction? My jury is out.”

There exists such a thing as an engraved Canespace mug?

For sure my engraved canespace mug is making the trip - what else will I drink my coffee in the morning watching the horses??

NICE

BigWindyCane1

Notable cuts: Harlan Gunn, Atlanta Falcons
Jared Wheeler, Buffalo Bills
Micanor Regis, Carolina Panthers
Laron Byrd, Dallas Cowboys
Luther Robinson, Green Bay Packers
Brandon Harris, Houston Texans
Stephen Morris, Jacksonville Jaguars
Demarcus Van Dyke, Kansas City Chiefs
Chase Ford, Minnesota Vikings
Asante Cleveland, San Francisco 49ers
Eric Winston, Seattle Seahawks
Brandon Washington, St.Louis Rams

I wish these former Canes success. I hope they find another team or a practice squad.

dj moonbat

If last season's 'Noles were about a 9 on the football potency scale (where 2001 Rose Bowl 'Canes are a 10), I'd say last night's team looked like a weak seven. Sure, they're good, but not scary. At least not yet.

i guess it's hard for Jameis Winston to find receivers other than Kelvin Benjamin without his glasses. I never would have figured they would have so much trouble replacing two WRs -- it seems like it should have been easy for them. But no.

BTW: did I hear correctly from Herbstreit that OSU lost TEN starters on D, and came out looking like that? If you look at their roster, it seems plausible. Virtually every name has an FR or an SO next to it:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/roster/_/id/197/oklahoma-state-cowboys

UM's coaches got some 'splaining to do.

Also: when Miami beats FSU, it sure isn't going to be because we got to Winston as easily as OSU did last night. Their DL was savage. UM's got some DEs now, but DTs are still in short supply.

Go Canes

Week one has already shown the difference between between winning and losing has become such a fine line in today's game.

Surfercane

Just woke up LSU won really??? Damn SEC....

nemo2002

What will it take to beat FSU?

A good defense, especially against the run.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Ask and you shall receive.

Attention all Canes fans. Live on ABC you can watch the destruction of FSU. Jameis is getting hit like we are going to do to him. FSU is beatable and they are showing it right now, all you have to do is man up and them in their POS mouths. But hey, I'm getting ahead of myself, first we have to show up against Louisville on Monday night and kick their @sses and turn over their garbage cans. If you look at what we've been bringing in at DE you will see we are going to be deep with pass rushes. We are going to tee off on Louisville in a game that's only close for a quarter. The winds are strong my friends. The time of the great storm has come.

WWIN

WWIN - because I don't think we win all our games - and limos are just kinda cool

From Luke:

The Canes Can Win Big if Donna Shalala Loosens the Reins

On Labor Day, the University of Miami Hurricanes will begin their season with a game against the Louisville Cardinals, the team that kicked the snot out of them in the Russell Athletic Bowl last December. It's a great opportunity for head coach Al Golden to set the tone for his fourth season at the helm. He has no more excuses this year. The U enters this season free of distractions. There is no longer a cloud hanging over the program because of NCAA investigations. And Golden has a stud quarterback starting with freshman Brad Kaaya.

However, the Canes have a tough schedule. They could easily go 2-8, but I believe this team can go undefeated if university president Donna Shalala loosens the screws a bit. One thing I noticed about last season is that the players were uptight during games. They played with no emotion. It seemed like the team had been told to play like Boy Scouts. That is not Miami football.

The Canes were successful in the '80s and the early '00s because those teams played on the edge, smash-mouth football with some trash-talking. I know Golden's team can play the same way. I've seen it at practice, where the players are competitive and getting in one another's faces. For some reason, that didn't happen last season.

Under Golden and his predecessor, Randy Shannon, the team has been controlled by Shalala. She wants players to comport themselves like they're attending Duke University. Canes players seem afraid to celebrate after making a big play. That's not "bringing the swagger back," as the UM commercials proclaim.

Even the atmosphere at home games is boring. It doesn't feel like a college football game. Instead of catering to the kids paying tuition, the school is more concerned with appeasing the old fogies who buy suites. The administration can start by playing the song I made for the documentary The U at home games. It has swagger.

It's time Shalala lets these boys off the leash. If that happens, there's no college team that can beat the Hurricanes.

CaneRock

Anybody has a digital box...how many channels can those things pick up. I'm thinking about getting one, as a back-up for when our satellite goes out...

Posted by: CaneRock | August 30, 2014 at 02:23 PM

If you've got a fairly recent TV, you don't need a box anymore to pick up digital signals with an antenna. We get about 70 channels here in Los Angeles, but when you subtract the Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Jesus channels, it's more like 20-30.

Dude on a Pale Horse

No excuse for not being in that ACC championship game. It would be a total failure by Al Golden.

Dude on a Pale Horse

I don't think newer tvs need the box, just a really good antenna.

dj moonbat

So far the ACC is looking less than impressive. Wake Forest losing to La. Monroe, NCSU down to Ga. Southern, and Ga. Tech up five against Wofford, in a game where the bookies didn't even bother with a spread.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Bunche was a quality player for us. He would have started this year @RT I think. But the drop off behind him isn't steep at all. Gadbois was right there McDermott and Darling would challenge for PT anywhere in America. Would have been nice to have him though.
