It had been a turbulent year. His football program had been rocked by two investigations, one into players receiving improper benefits from an agent and another involving academic misconduct. Thirteen Tar Heels, many of them standout players and top NFL draft prospects, had been suspended for the 2010 opener against LSU. UNC almost won the game anyway, losing on the final play. UNC's defensive line coach, John Blake, resigned the day after the game. A few weeks later, three star players were ruled permanently ineligible for the agent scandal. Still, Davis' team won eight of its final 11 games, including a victory over Florida State in Tallahassee and a victory over Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.

Hokies coming back...kinda.

But he sucked at UNC????

Davis' explanation for what was behind his departure from UM: "Ten days before we played BC [Boston College] in the last game of the season, we had completed 97 percent of the contract. It had taken us three hours to agree to the money. That was done. I was probably one of the lowest-paid [I-A] head coaches when I took that job [in 1995] and then after seven years, they were paying me $1 million. The stumbling block we could never get over was, if they decided to do what North Carolina did [by just suddenly firing him] they were only going to pay me 20 percent of the money, but because [Miami] had been burned by Howard [Schnellenberger] leaving and Jimmy leaving and Dennis [Erickson] leaving, so if I had ever left I had to pay them 80 percent.

"I said, 'Guys that isn't fair. I can't pay you 80 and you're only gonna pay me 20. If you wake up and say, 'I don't like redhead coaches,' I'm gone. Let's either make it 80-80, 20-20 or 50-50.' We battled over 20-80 for almost two months. I turned the Cleveland Browns job down. I turned down two other jobs. Well, lo and behold, the last home visit I made I'm sitting in Antrel Rolle's living room and his mom and dad said, 'Coach, are you gonna be here?' I said, 'Antrel, I will be the head coach at the University of Miami,' and I believed in all my heart I was going to be. Then we go home and four or five days later we still can't get the contract done. [Cleveland president] Carmen Policy calls and says, 'Would you reconsider?'

Go Canes, what did he do wrong?

Butch Davis

Year, UM, UNC
001: 8-3, 4-8
002: 9-3, 8-5
003: 5-6, 8-5
004: 9-3, 8-5
005: 9-4,
006: 11-1,

It took Butch 6 years to get Miami back to championship contention with the NCAA sanctions. Without sanctions, Butch took four years with UNC.

longimecanefan

top 20....

longimecanefan

Louisville struggling with UVA. Virgina has no offense, but good D. Same for Louisville. We'll see who makes the right half time moves..

Meanwhile VT in a struggle with East Carolina. Long way to go, but wouldn't be shocked to see VT lose after the big game last week.

longimecanefan

Louisville has gone to backup QB....not sure why..

Terrance Sullivan

Great stuff Soup. I agree I think we win 37-17 as well. Go Canes!

Didn't Miami renegotiate Butch's contract three or four times between 1995 and 1999?

I love the blog....but you guys beat stuff to death. All the coaching talk....The ONLY coach or staff that matters is UM HERE & NOW.
And apply the fact Al is not and never will be elite coach---nor will anyone on this staff.

When you talk COACHES who can C O A C H or ELITE DEF or OFF Mind, GOLDEN does not come up. Recently, I have seen a list of coaches who's teams look good and they can coach. Name top 20 or to 50 coaches in NCAA Div. 1 or "MINDS" of football. Golden, D'No, and Coley are not on the lists. Like em or not Saban can coach and Def mind, Chip Kelly can coach and OFF mind, Myer can coach, David Shaw can coach, Stoops can coach and def mind,,,,, many many more.
Who care's what Jimmy, Butch, or Howard did with respect to UM now. And Until Golden is gone or someone on his staff is fired, then we are STUCK!

Let's GO CANES!

fmcane

So I cant get the game on espn.com any other stream available?

TonyCane

WWIM...I have no idea what the configuration of his contract was. Just that he got a new deal several times, including after the 1995 season because they were worried that he was bolting for the NFL. It's not as if Miami made him sit on that original contract for half a decade. He would have left long before hand if so.

As for real sanctions...Butch only had the lack of scholarships and the depth issues that it created to recruit against beginning in Nov 1995. Golden had to recruit for two years with the threat of a death penalty. It was a legitimate threat. If the NCAA had not blundered we would have been made an example of. Recruit against that threat against Alabama, FSU, Florida, and LSU.

Not saying Golden is a better coach. Or not. Time will, and perhaps has told. But it is revisionist history to think 2011-2013 was not a time of deep peril for the program.

Go Canes

Just watched EC sack VT's QB out of a straight 3-4 defense.

Susan at the Herald has reported seeing AQM at sunlife in a canes jersey, what gives?

Cane Since 1982

Lville is on the road this game.

Lville is not playing a night game at home for this game.

Teams do not bring their A game to play UVA. They do bring their A game to play Miami.

This is a let down game for Lville. Is UVA better than Lville? Hell no. Is Lville better than Miami? Debatable.

Also this is a different week. Teams win games they shouldn't and teams loose games they shouldn't. That's why they play the games and don't hand out the trophies based on paper matchups or fan perceptions of their teams.

RCCF

someone tell Mr. 3-4 the team using it is LOSING smh...
I swear some bloggers do themselves NO Justice.. its ok to like the 3-4 but it is NOT Ok for you to support a system that is Obviously Flawed then get mad because EVERYONE sees it but U... Miami is too athletic to rely on a 3-4 defense it exposes too much and it forces our players to over compensate for a down defender who should be in position as opposed to chasing slot receivers.. I remember you saying you are a Basketball player let me speak your language...if you are getting Torched in a 1-2-2 defense by a team with sufficient passers do you continue running the 1-2-2 or do you switch to a 3-2 to cover your top and prevent the passing lanes? All We Ask is That U Make Sense!!

RCCF

Lurker

The wallowing in negativity is making this blog more and more unreadable.

I mean really, most of you don't even talk football anymore. It's all about a scavenger hunt to find what little factoid, or current score, can be brought out to make this team and coaches look bad.

Does anybody care to talk about our opponents mobile QB, and what that may mean? What will the defensive approach be.

Nah, let's just constantly bash and bash and bash.

The Ville getting into a brawl with the cavs at the end of the half you gotta love it.

So you mean it's OK not to take $h!t from the opponent?...that it's OK not to give the opponent a dap & a hug and then proceed to...stretch? That's not what you're saying...ARE YOU?!

WWIN

Golden had to recruit for two years with the threat of a death penalty. It was a legitimate threat.

Wow east car playing hard ...vt playing down to carolina level what can you say about this video game generation ?

The Ville getting into a brawl? A dark day for college sports. Will Joe theism an call for Louisville to cancel its season, as he did to Miami in 2006.

mi@mic@ne

The old canes would compare football to war. Loosing is like dying. Not so much now

VA Cane

How many times to I have to coach you up? Its not the alignment, its the 5 guys playing safety. Its the corners giving up too much space. Its the 2 gap system up front. Its covering dirt instead of receivers.

GC listen to the man; they are coming with 3 and 4 up front they are up on the ball and ready, they are WFO and they are running a lot of man in the secondary; we just do not play that up front in your face beat your ass D!!!! It is a foreign language to UM fooball!!!!!

Until we do we will struggle.

CaneRock

If the NCAA had not blundered we would have been made an example of.

Posted by: TonyCane | September 13, 2014 at 02:41 PM

Maybe, but negative public opinion, and lawsuits, played a bigger part than the NCAA's blunder in the UM case.

TonyCane

WWIM, we'll never know but I strongly suspect that Penn States would have been ours at one point, along with a possible tv ban. We are the "evil" Miami, everything that supposedly wrong with sports. That's still the perception, and we know it. And the NCAA would have loved to make an example of us. But they could not do so credibly.

Cane Since 1982

football is not war it is a game. The two are not comparable.

Cane Since 1982

Football is not war; it is a game. The two are not comparable. Also the one Cane that compared it war was after a loss.

mi@mic@ne

We aint gonna get a lot of guys on the ball because we play zone and the guys are spread all over the field just be for the slow pursuit

Dude on a Pale Horse

Posted by: Lurker | September 13, 2014 at 03:01 PM

Maybe you should leave then?

Golden Homers are always looking for stupid facts to support Golden. It goes both ways. If you don't like it, leave.

WWIN

Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | September 13, 2014 at 02:16 PM

So one minute you say Golden needs to go and then you defend him the next, what side of the fense are you on?

So apparently I've missed the part where we've been doing good since 2004 but those two bowl bans came in and derailed everything. Oh and I can't forget about the ACCCG that we made it to by consolation that we gave up those were program killas!

ACCCG was on the line going into the Duke and Va Tech game with TWO OPPORTUNITIES to go with NO "CLOUD" around whatsoever and resulted in two epic fails.

But you are right, had we played those two bowl games and that ACCCG those woulda been 3 more major losses to Golden and he would probably be gone by now! So you right, it did set the program back!

mi@mic@ne

We were in the top ten when we actually had real pressure that motivated our opponent to knock us out. This climate is a joke. Serious comp is for teams who actually are ranked. Dont fool yourself.

BigWindyCane1

Light drizzle today, but the Canes look ready. Look to see what kind of progress takes place today. It's still early in the season, and the Canes have not shown their potential. This could be the game for the Canes to turn the corner and start executing. Looking for big plays on both sides of the ball.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Posted by: Cane Since 1982 | September 13, 2014 at 03:08 PM

Good luck changing that mindset. In a lot of ways they are similar, its why they use a lot of the same language. In the Navy we drill, drill, drill until we are perfect, its long hours dedicated to perfection. In the way we go about our business there are a lot of similarities between the military and football. Maybe the media shouldn't call Peyton Manning a General or Tom Brady a surgeon or Billechek a genious.

Cane Since 1982

My point is no one was calling for Coakers head after his 3rd year even though each year was worse than the one before.

People were calling for Shannons head after year 3.

People are calling for Goldens head after 3 years even though every year has been better than the one before.

We will never have a winning program with constant turn over. You got to let people build their scheme.

I understand your facts of not beating winning teams on the regular, but if he keeps improving each year he will start winning those games consistently but we will never know if you keep pushing for him and every new coach for ever and ever to be fired after 3 damn years.

roachcane77

Dude on a Pale Horse

VT is going to lose.

Cane Since 1982

In the infantry we go to war. I spent a year in the Pech River Valley (worst place on earth). I played 16 years of football (including college). The two are not comparable. I will correct everyone that tries to compare them.

Cane Since 1982

Ill give you the military and football are comparable.

mi@mic@ne

There is nothing wrong with using war as a metaphor . We use figures of speech all the time. The game is a battle etc.

Cane Since 1982

So looks like we will miss the beginning of our game to watch the end of BGSU and Indiana. Awesome!

Cane Since 1982

Ok im not going to win this one. I don't like the comparison.

Dude on a Pale Horse

So the word war is off limits? Lol. How about battle? Skirmish? Fight? Where's the cutoff?

BigWindyCane1

Saw Mark Walton play again last night and he is the real deal. I don't know if he will quality to graduate early, but he is good enough to play. I wish he kept his pads lower at times, but he is bigger than the 179 lbs he is listed at, and can also line up in the slot or catch the ball out of the backfield. With Walton, Dexter Williams and Scarlett, the Canes have some really good RB recruits.

Yes, Lurker. I care. It worries me significantly, because UM has had a LOT of trouble handling mobile QBs (except those running fairly traditional option schemes) for a while now -- dating back into Randy's tenure. (See? I threw you a bone there.)

Here's what that may mean: we may give up a lot of yardage and a lot of points. And if our offense isn't prepared to rack up a lot of yardage and points in return, we might even lose.

It's scary that I am even a little bit worried about losing to Arkansas State.

Thank you for inviting me to share my feelings. It helps a little.
