Has an O looked worse putting up 40+? D looks solid but I'm still anxious every time there's passing play.

Thought Kaaya was OK. Going to be some real down moments with him this year but there is a QB in there if we don't destroy him.

Could be worse, could be UT. It is an interesting comparison moving forward, UM with a 4th year HC and UT with 1st year. I'll wager Strong will have UT humming before the end of the season, Canes will what they are in the AG process.

There IT is right there.

Go Canes

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Phillip Dorsett caught two touchdown passes, Duke Johnson eclipsed the 2,000-yard career rushing mark and Miami topped Florida A&M 41-7 Saturday night.

Dorsett had scoring grabs of 4 and 32 yards from Brad Kaaya for the Hurricanes (1-1), who beat the Rattlers for the ninth straight time. Johnson had 97 yards on nine carries, including a 1-yard scoring run, and Gus Johnson ran 15 yards for another Miami touchdown.

The win came in the 100th game of Miami coach Al Golden's career, evening his record at 50-50.

Kaaya completed 12 of 22 passes for 177 yards, with the two touchdowns and two interceptions. Miami's Trayone Gray had a 10-yard touchdown run -- on the first carry of his career -- with 4:17 left.

John Boston recovered a botched punt snap in the end zone for Florida A&M (0-2). Brandon Norwood had 74 yards on three catches for the Rattlers.

Florida A&M brought its famed band down from Tallahassee, and the "Marching 100" -- as expected -- put on a scintillating show at halftime, replete with the performers lining up in a "305" formation, a nod to the primary area code in the Miami area.

By then, though, the game was decided.

The Hurricanes got touchdowns on four of their first six possessions, rolling out to a 28-0 lead late in the first half. There were 27 plays in the first quarter, with the line of scrimmage on every one -- regardless of who had the ball -- being in Florida A&M territory. Miami opened drives on the Rattlers' 49 twice and another on their 13.

Dorsett's 4-yard touchdown opened the scoring. His 32-yard catch in the back of the end zone late in the half made it 28-0, with Dorsett diving near the end line and staying in bounds.

Johnson had a 1-yard run for Miami's second score, and his 55-yard carry highlighted the drive that was capped by Edwards' touchdown and pushed Miami's lead to 21-0.

Johnson has played in 22 games for Miami, with rushing touchdowns in 12 of them. Miami is now 12-0 in those games.

It was Johnson's first home game since Oct. 26, after his 2013 season ended early because of a broken ankle suffered at Florida State. His family obtained more than 100 tickets to Saturday's game -- "Return of the Duke," they called it -- for friends and relatives. They saw him climb up the Miami all-time lists, passing Edgerrin James for No. 5 in all-purpose yards and Frank Gore for No. 9 in career rushing by a Hurricane.

Johnson now has 2,047 rushing yards at Miami.

Dorsett's two touchdown catches matched a career-best -- his other 2-TD game coming against North Carolina State in 2012.

Miami got many of its first-stringers out before the third quarter ended. Johnson's night was over by halftime and Kaaya was replaced by senior transfer Jake Heaps in the third quarter.

@mattyports: ACC goes 11-0 in non-conf games this week, including Va. Tech's upset of No. 8 Ohio State (and No. 21 UNC's near-loss to San Diego State...

UM was 2 for 10 on third down and is now 3 for 23 for the season.

On the bright side, that's an improvement from last week. At that rate, we could be up to 6 for 35 by the time we play Nebraska

Montreal-Cane

We need a very good QB coach now...Remember what Marc Trestman did with Kosar...

Marc Trestman entered football coaching at the University of Miami in 1981 as a volunteer coach. In 1983 he was named quarterbacks coach. That year quarterback Bernie Kosar passed for 2,329 yards and Miami won the national championship. The next year Kosar completed 262 passes for 3,642 yards, both school records.

Montreal-Cane

Tracy Howard a 5 star...Lol...He would never start at VT with Bud Foster...Oh yeah he will have 3 or 4 Int. this season but most of the time he s....

Montreal-Cane

Terrific defensive effort by the Hurricanes, who limited an overmatched opponent to 114 yards --- including .8 per carry on 33 rushing attempts and 6 for 17 accuracy (for 89 yards) in the passing game. The only blemish: There were a couple of sizable completions --- one against Tracy Howard, the other against Ladarius Gunter.

Remember our special teams? We would block punts and kicks all the time.

Posted by: The Dude | September 07, 2014 at 01:18 AM

Those were the days! Now we only send 2-3 players in to try to block a punt. Smh

Dude on a Pale Horse

Wow! There were some hilarious posts today. Great job gang, can't wait 'til Arkansas State!

Sarasota 'cane

I'm really intrigued by the Arky St. game this week. The game is a nice test before Nebraska and should allow us to pick a starting QB before the game in Lincoln.

That's it for me. Some of the other bloggers are going to wake up tomorrow and blow a gasket when they see that we've been promoting Davis on the same day we won a game!! I promise you that these are the kinds of discussions that trustees have in big time programs. They were conspiring against Tubberville when he was undefeated at Auburn! It's a cut throat sport now!!

Good night again!

Dude on a Pale Horse

Remember our special teams? We would block punts and kicks all the time.

Dude on a Pale Horse

I think Butch would establish a very aggressive identity on both sides.

Sarasota 'cane

I would also add that Butch would have his hands all over the defense so you could bring an "up and comer" in at DC and Butch could coach him up.

Sarasota 'cane

Yeah he could bring Shannon in as DC but it would be unprecedented for a HC to come back as a coordinator.

I'm glad we can discuss this without being chastised for be dis-loyal. There is a growing # of us that feel the only way UM is going to move to the "next level" is with a different HC.

If we wait too long to pull the trigger then we risk losing our recruiting advantage with the local high schools IMO.

A recent example of a similar coaching change is Alabama. Mike Shula walked them through their probation, plugged all the holes with recruiting, but couldn't get the Tide to the next level. In comes Saban and bam! 2 titles.

You could almost make the same comparison with Zook and Meyer, but I hate UF and Meyer never went undefeated. We would certainly take his records for our own if we could.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Actually I think most of the staff would stay in place in this completely hypothetical situation. A new HC, DC is probably all we need if the HC knows at least enough to guide Coley.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Exactly.

TonyCane

I'd agree, due mainly to the fractured relationships with hs coaches.

Dude on a Pale Horse

Curious, any chance that Butch would try to bring back Shannon as DC?

Posted by: TonyCanes | September 07, 2014 at 01:00 AM

I'd say ZERO chance.

TonyCane

You also have to be careful of how ethical the guy is. We absolutely cannot have someone do set to win that he engages in enhanced recruiting. We are still under probation. Butch would seem the safe choice when you consider this.

Sarasota 'cane

UM has been relegated to the "dented can isle" at the coaching store. We can get a top notch coach, but there will always be some baggage attached.

Butch Davis, Mike Leach, George O'Leary, Bobby Petrino, etc. are all examples of the type of coach UM could sign if they were available and we were looking. You can win with these types of coaches if you are willing to forgive their shortcomings.

These guys are also likely to be more hungry and humble than some hot shot, plus they are likely to show more loyalty if the school does the same.

TonyCanes

Sarasota, if we make that move the hiring of Butch needs to be simultaneous. No 10 day "search". You announce the same day and he hits the trail immediately.

Curious, any chance that Butch would try to bring back Shannon as DC?

Dude on a Pale Horse

TC,

I agree, it has to be a sure thing if its done at all.

Dude on a Pale Horse

I've heard Foster hasn't gotten a HC job because he's a little too well known and friendly with the students at VT if you catch my meaning. Also, he breaks one of the new rules for a new HC, no HC experience. Sorry, no learning on the job @ The U.

TonyCanes

WWIM, you can with superior coaching. But there are not that many out there. What we have is a good to great recruiter, and like Butch or Mack Brown is someone who ultimately can succeed with overwhelming talent

Get a superior coach and we can go 11-1 next year. But it has tone as close to a sure thing as possible if you make that move. Screw it up and you set the program back even further.

I just want our Canes back!

Sarasota 'cane

But can Miami get a Foster, Fischer, or Saban?

Posted by: TonyCane | September 07, 2014 at 12:39 AM

No, but they can get a Davis. They're not gonna pull the trigger, but he makes the most sense if UM acted quickly. He's the only top notch coach that wants to coach UM for the money they offer.

Butch will have a job at the end of the year if it makes sense.

TonyCanes

One interesting point, V Tech has almost the same number of four and five star players that we do. Of all our opponents, they are the closest.

dumpster fire

But can Miami get a Foster, Fischer, or Saban?

***************************************************

No.....they wouldnt even want to come to Miami.

TonyCane

It get what you are saying guys. Miami could be more dominant now with a top level coach, as opposed to a mid level coach who is a good recruiter. But can Miami get a Foster, Fischer, or Saban?

TonyCane

My Texas friends want to know how long before Strong gets it turned around. They are in shock right now. UT might have to go with their true freshmen QB too this season. BYU shut down the Longhorns offense and ultimately wore out the defense. It looked familiar!

dumpster fire

not sure if you heard the QB from Vtech but he basically said that when you have a defense like they do, you can get away with a mistake here and there on offense.....

Ryan Williams needs to get healthy and start yesterday.

Kaaya is not ready--floats the ball too much and is not as accurate as advertised.

Heaps has accuracy issues also.

D looked good.

Sarasota 'cane

I'm glad we could all have a few laughs and watch a win tonight before the schedule starts to heat up.

I said 9-3 before the UL game but I think 8-4 is more realistic. Nothing to do with UM as much as the VT game for me.

Good night folks!!

j.w.

Sota, agree with everything you said tonight. Kaaya right now isn't ready, just too many mistakes and this isn't Triple A baseball where results don't really matter. Williams' injury took his redshirt year unfortunately, so it is what it is. Heaps can be mediocre, I don't see him being terrible in any game but I'll agree he isn't going to set the world on fire. Olsen is anyone's guess right now. The D looks like a D1A defense, and at times the front 7 looks strong. I'm really concerned with our CB play, I suspect it's more ultra-conservative zone that makes them look so bad at times, but we'll never know until we see them play man to man. Special teams were better, other than FG and XP.

Arky St. should be a good test to see if UM is less than average.

Nebraska should be a good test to see if UM is average.

I did see a few things I liked. The defense is playing better. Chick looks good. Perryman is as advertised, but he left the game with an injury.

After 2games I would say UM has some playmakers, but they're still not ready for primetime.

WWIN

LQ, haven't heard that. That's crazy, we'll trade em if they want?

LQ

Oh and Brady Hoke is getting fired this year

Ohio_Cane

Olsen suspension is over

Go Canes

Good won for my Canes. Kaaya continues to need more reps and to keep improving week to week.

D pitched a shutout, only gave up 5 first downs and 114 total yards..., we continue to look much better than last year on that side of the ball. Glad to see the backups come on and also get some much needed work. As Tony has illustrated, they're definitely the future of this program.

2-1 on the horizon, then on to a tough matchup in Lincoln. Can't wait for that one.

Go Canes!!
