It was obvious to all that saw the football game that the best coach and the best team won the contest on Saturday at Sun Life Stadium.
Miami and Al Golden beat Duke and David Cutcliffe 22-10 in a rain-soaked affair that was dominated by the Hurricanes.
Here are a few of the key stats of the game:
- Quarterback Brad Kaaya finished the game completing 20 of 34 attempts for 223 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. This is the first game in Kaaya’s career that he did not throw an interception.
- Eight different receivers caught passes for the third time this season.(Herb Waters, Malcolm Lewis, Joe Yearby, Clive Walford, Duke Johnson, Stacy Coley, Walter Tucker and Braxton Berrios)
- Running back Duke Johnson surpassed 4,000 career all-purpose yards in the first quarter. He joins former Hurricanes Santana Moss and Ottis Anderson as the only players in school history to surpass 4,000 all-purpose yards.
- Johnson surpassed 100 yards rushing for the eighth time in his career and for the first time this season. He finished the game with 155 yards rushing.
- With his 155 yards rushing, Johnson surpassed former Hurricane Graig Cooper for fifth on the all-time rushing list. Johnson currently has 2,392 career rushing yards.
- Only Miami RBs with a TD catch of 40-or-more yards in the last 15 years: Mike James, Duke Johnson and Joe Yearby.
- Running back Joe Yearby caught a 47-yard pass from QB Brad Kaaya in the fourth quarter. This is Yearby’s first touchdown reception of his career.
- Wide receiver Herb Waters totaled five receptions for 81 yards. Herb Waters’ 81 receiving yards is the highest all season. Additionally, he hauled in his first touchdown reception of the season and the eighth of his career.
GOLDEN FOR PRESIDENT!

It's mind of comical to read people comments suggesting it's Duke. It's Duke. It's just Duke.
Yeah, the Duke team that's played in a ACC champ game that put Canes haven't even sniffed yet. Yeah. It's Duke. The team we were only favored by 7 against.
The negative nancies can find anything to whine about, don't they?

I think that this may well be Golden's first lasting quality win (i.e., a win where the opponent ends up the season looking like a good team). They're definitely not going to end up in the ACC cellar.
That team is resilient -- even though the statistical margin kept getting bigger in Miami's favor, Duke didn't crack, until finally Boone lost his mind and threw that interception to Denzel. Certainly, they lack gifted athletes, but even if it's slow, the football they're playing is basically sound.
We shouldn't feel bad about feeling good about this win.

I prefer to think of myself as hating the sin (bad football), and not the sinner(s).
If UM keeps showing up like last night, and slowly improving, I'll have few complaints. We'll lose another game or two, but I'll be able to live with it, because we'll be playing real football. If we regress to Nebraska (or even worse, if we regress to Louisville), I'm back in the streets with pitchfork and torch.

I guess I have to keep saying this: Duke is not a sh***y football team. Yes, they WERE a sh***y football team, for many years. So when UM came to the ACC, Duke was a game that fans got used to winning huge.
But then they got better. It happens. Miami itself was not even remotely a powerhouse football program -- until one season, it all of a sudden was. Duke still isn't a powerhouse, but it has elevated its game, and we're just making ourselves feel bad for no reason if we pretend we just beat a D- football team when it's really more like a B+ or a C-.

Whenever Miami defenses back in the day would play an option team, the announcers would always say "the one thing they have to worry about is overpursuing..."
Not gonna be a problem in this defense.
Somehow, this defense hasn't done that badly against GT. I mean, it hasn't been great, but it hasn't been the dumpster fire we might expect. Right around 400 yards the last two years, and like 225 the year before.
But Paul Johnson's eventually going to have a game where he cracks this defense open and feasts on the meaty underbelly. Let's hope it's not his year.

As long as the Canes continue to grow and develop, they should win the coastal. I saw a more aggressive D last night and I hope that continues. I still saw some areas for improvement on D, so as long as they continue to grow as a unit, then everything else will take care of itself.
Good to see Kaaya go the whole game without an int. Kaaya and the rest of the O are developing and gelling right before our eyes.
There were a few disappointments on O. Coley still has not developed to match his freshman year. I recall last season he had a few early drops then turned it around. With the depth we have this year, those drops stand out. Coley needs to put in some work.
Gus needs to be demoted. He had one sportscenter highlight run, but a bunch of bonehead plays like missing blocks and wrong assignments when he is not running the ball. Gray is much much better and the new RB recruits are also.

Good win for our Canes last night.
Rock solid defense for the fourth time in five games. Offensive third down conversions continues to be a problem but that will get better with timing and experience.
Continue to see one and hopefully zero more losses for the rest of the season and as I posted after our first game', I only wish we could play Louisville with this version of Kaays rather than week one's.
Looking up and down this roster, if anyone's not excited about where we're heading, well I just don't get it.

Hurricane player post-Nebraska, right?
In fact, that's what FSU linebacker Northup said last night after FSU gave up 520 yards, most since 2009.

I still don't get why people are demanding that we look at the Louisville game as some kind of defensive masterpiece. We held a struggling offense (Louisville is 78th in total offense) to a mediocre number of yards and 24 points. If you start calling that "rock solid defense," pretty soon your standards are straight down the tubes.

For me four things:
Look at the percentage of the population who care more about other sports particularly baseball or soccer
Look at the percentage of the population whose allegiances are to other schools, other areas of the country, or other nations
Look at the number of competing recreational and sporting venues including other professional sports.
Look at the number of Miami graduates period as well as the number who remain in the community.
You might also look at the number of students at the U who actually grew up following Hurricane footbal
Now compare to Lincoln, Nebraska.

ESPN:
Do not count out Miami. A week ago, Miami defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio was the most wanted man in South Florida after the Canes looked completely out of it in a loss to Nebraska. Would you look at that defense a week later? Miami completely shut down Duke and its run game, holding the Blue Devils to 264 total yards and 2-of-16 on third down while forcing three turnovers. But maybe the best news of all in its 22-10 victory -- Miami made some exceptional tackles and that has to be encouraging moving forward. While critics might want to quickly dismiss the win because it came against a Duke team that feasted on weak competition to date, Miami deserves credit for bouncing back from a dreadful tackling day against the Huskers. Duke Johnson finally got to 100 yards rushing and Brad Kaaya keeps getting better. The rest of the Coastal is a mess, so why not Miami?

Win and they will come, that's the way it has always been in Miami. No South Florida team, ever, in any sport, has had a following that filled the place regardless of record or opponent.
And that's fine with me, because it's the law of the entertainment business. If the product you're selling is not good enough or somebody else's is better, why should people come and pay?
Fans see it differently, of cause. For a fan, it's like going to church: It might not always be the most entertaining thing to do, but it's something he or she believes in. Others just look at the entertainment factor, and stay home or go elsewhere.

Well if I remember correctly we had 4-5 sacks, 7-8 tfls, held them under 50% on 3rd down, got s couple of huge takeaways and gave up a pretty reasonable yardage number.
Score matters but if our offense had done anything that night I dout they get to 24.
Posted by: Go Canes | September 28, 2014 at 11:57 AM
Finally some old school defense last night. I guess DENO finally listened to the linch mob. Then trick for him is to not regress to his old ways. By no means is this a great defense and yes we have been plenty successful against GT but they are basically one deminsional so that solves half our problem.
We still suk on third down and I'll never understand with all our speed and our skill position players, how that can be. Isaid yesterday, maybe for one day they could rise up and they did but lets see on down the road when they play someone who has some real talent and skill. Duke has become a descent team but they are by no means world beaters, their system gives them a chance to compete.
Kaaya looks like he will be the real deal. All and all a good win.

@mattyports: Hurricanes move up to 14th in total defense (299.8). 65th vs. run, T-25th vs. pass. T-4 in forced fumbles (8), T-6 in fumbles recovered (7).
@mattyports: The bad: Miami is now 124th nationally in third down conversions (14-of-58, 24.1 percent) and 119th in turnovers lost (13).

Per the most recent Census, 41% of the Dade County population is either under 5 Y/O...under 18 Y/O...or 65 and over. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not a strong demographic to market to. Also, per the Census, the median household income is from 08-12 was $43,464, almost $4K less than the rest of the state. And the people living below the poverty rate from 08-12, was 19.1%, 3.5% more than the rest of the state.
Like Coke said awhile back, if you can afford to attend games, BE GRATEFUL! And stop B!TCH!N! about those who can't afford to attend the games...SHEEZ!
Posted by: CaneRock | September 28, 2014 at 12:16 PM
Third down is often a function of the success or lack of success on first and second down. The Canes often found themselves in third and long. They should have run the ball a little more when they had the lead and Duke could not stop them.
Duke Johnson and Yearby and even Gray could provide a great compliment the developing passing game. I saw them play in high school and they are better than any group of RBs in the ACC. What we saw Duke saying on the sidelines"give me the F#$%×ing ball!" is what he used to do in high school during his junior and senior years. Duke hates to loose and he has the heart of a lion. Don't be surprised if the Canes become a 40+ points per game offense by the end of the season. They really have the personnel to get it done if they continue developing. The OL really played much, much better and they could have a special group if they stay healthy and keep improving.

@mattyports: Alabama overtakes Florida State for No. 1 in the coaches' poll (1477 points to 1468). FSU had 26 1st-place votes, Bama 15. Both teams 4-0

Terrance
Sorry, but Miami's attendance numbers on a percentage basis are actually very comparable to USC and UCLA
A quick bit of research gives me these numbers to work with:
Miami 16,395 students, 165,000 alumni and a Metropolitan Area of 5,828,191. For comparison those numbers combine to produce last night’s total of 44,500.
Now take
USC 40,000 students, 363,533 alumni and a metropolitan area of 13,131,431
UCLA 42,190 students, 400,000+ alumni and a metropolitan area of 13,131,431
Just to make things equivalent lets split the LA metropolitan area in half for each giving them 6,565,715.
So USC’s fan base of students and alumni is 55% larger than UM
So UCLA’s fan base of student and alumni is 59% larger than UM
The metropolitan area for each is 12% larger
Therefore using Miami’s 44,500 as the standard means USC should draw 67% more fans and UCLA should draw 71% more fans.
Therefore USC should draw 74,315 fans per game. And UCLA should draw 76,095 fans per game which pretty much equals your estimate of 75,000 fans per game
And that doesn’t take in the respective percentages of actual alumni still living in the metropolitan area which I would imagine would be higher for the two California schools particularly UCLA which is a state school and should draw a higher percentage of California grads that USC.
As both cities have high immigrant populations, I’m call the aspects about favorite sports and allegiance to other areas a draw.
You math majors can take apart my numbers and how I rounded them or failed to do so in any way you please.

Last night was a win we had to have. How good Duke really is we won't know until the season is near over. Last year Fl looked like a big win, and they finished 4-8....
Post game thoughts....Duke is well coached, and plays within their scheme. We have more talent and it showed at the finish.
Kaaya is very good, Yearby could be better then Duke J. A lot of receivers got into the mix as well. Coley and Bus need to regroup.
On the D the scheme was more aggressive, keeping in mind Duke is not Nebraska or UL.
Next up is GT and the triple option running game. Need to get prepared this week..
Let's see if we can make it two in a row...

It's not even 24 hours after the win. Some people simply can't enjoy a win, they want to pull out little nuggets about this win that are negative, just to piss in everybody else's cornflakes.
If you can't enjoy this, you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.
If you're going to do moan, then break down the game tape and hit us up with some knowledge. Like how the defensive formations have significantly adapted. Whatever happens the rest of the season, watch how the defense lined up this game. Huge adjustments and difference from before.
